Meet The PetMorons

puddleglum.jpg

Hi there,

These are sisters kittuhs. Casper and Laura. The picture of them on the steps is about 5 years old. Casper is looking at the camera with his big Lemur eyes. Laura is being coy. The other 2 are recent. Both cats are 14 years old now. Casper is now blind and has health issues. Laura is stubborn and will live forever. - Uncle Puddleglum luvs his niece and nephew kittuhs!

A proud uncle. All of the spoiling and none of the pet rearing. Nice move and thanks for sharing.

Love the HQ's Pet Thread and finally have something to contribute...

I have the honor of a "Christmas in July" birthday, July twenty-five. My cat (I believe) understood when I said, "Let's steam some crabs for dinner.." that or she knew it was my birthday...
And to think that at one time, I regretted finding her and feeling compelled to take on the dependency of yet another life...
I feel loved.
Good kitty my Lucky.
Outdoor female cats rock....mostly.- Diane

Oh my, Lucky needs to learn about the animal kingdom. I hate to see what she brings back when you order steak. Thanks for sharing.

Hello!

Just wanted to send along a photo of Toby. Some here may recognize my nick; in the past, I've been a little, shall we say, negative about dogs and dog owners after the ex used her dogs and their feces as weapons to end our marriage and cover for her cheating. The healing process has been hard, what with our culture telling me at every turn that I'm evil and all that. We all know the drill. But a huge step for me came recently in first babysitting a friend's dog for a few days over several weeks. Liking having the dog around, I considered adopting my own. Met a few awkward candidates, then met Toby -- and the connection was instant. Our backstories are similar, but I won't bore you with that - neither matter now, really. Driving home from the humane society, we stopped at a light. Toby stood on the back seat, the leaned forward and rested his head on my shoulder and pressed the side of his head to mine. In that instant, the last two years of purgatory and the years of hell before that almost evaporated. I wept. And I still do when I think of that moment. It's hard to describe, and hard to recall.

Anyway - here's Toby on the trail along the river beside our home.

Be well -- Lickmuffin

A story with a happy ending for both man and dog. There is a reason dogs are known as "Man's best friend." Thanks for your contribution.

Checking Out The New Plants.jpg

When we were first locked down here in California (before this second infinite lock-down) the DH decided to replant all the pots on the back patio and brought home a ton of flowers. Our Abyssinian cat, Gizmo, immediately had to check these out.

Lately there has been a spell of below-average weather, with heavy fog in the mornings. A cold house means Miz Gizmo sogs out in her heated Kat Kup until the sun comes out in the afternoon, whereupon she transfers over to a patio chair or the nice sunny window shelf. She is super spoiled!

Thanks for the pet thread, I look forward to it every Saturday!-- Tankascribe

Beautiful flowers. Gorgeous cat. Quite the photograph you shot there. Thanks for sharing and your kind words.

Co-workers? They look like adorable slackers to me!! Quite the crew if they do decide to perform labor. Thanks for the contribution today.

Long time fan here and love the pet thread. We lost our little Charlie a few weeks ago, passing away in our back yard on a blanket under our apple tree. She was 13.5 years old and was the best little dog ever, such a sweet and gentle girl. I will miss her following me around the house everywhere and our long walks around the neighborhood. We have a big hole in our hearts now. - Scott

Condolences on your loss. Such small creatures can leave such a big hole in our hearts and lives. She was a cutie. Thank you for sharing today.

dixiebc2.jpg

Long time reader.

This is our two rescues. Dixie Skynyrd (2 1/2 years old) & BC (Barn cat,
Blacksmith cat B&$%h cat, maybe 3? years old). Note Dixie did not chase
the cat she just walked over to say hello and BC felt that would be
unnatural. The shelter has a program where they catch, fix and give away
feral cats to people who want a barn cat here in Alabama. She is a
ferocious hunter who has cured my problems with mice, chipmunks and
squirrels. Dixie is a great companion dog who just loves to run and is
just looking for another friend in the wrong place. She feels that it is
cheating to climb trees or be able to fly. - Brian

That's a really cool snap shot. I don't recall having a photo like this submitted to the Pet Thread. Dixie & Barn Cat seem to keep you on your toes. Thanks.

Two hardcore pet morons here:Mark and Patrick.

Over the past 49 years our home has been blessed by thirteen pet angles:six Yorkies, three whippets, three rescue greyhounds and one cat. Pictured top left is our whippet Hannah chillin’on her back - her signature position. Hannah passed on to Doggie Heaven in May at the age of thirteen years five months.Top right shows Hannah with our other whippet Sophie. They were best buddies and Sophie misses Hannah terribly. Bottom right shows the whippets catching some rays with their big “little” sister Dazzle a ten year old rescue greyhound.Dazzle is pictured in a resting mode bottom left. Dazzle is a happy happy party animal. She is constantly poking her nose into her toy box to find the perfect prize to toss around while doing her tornadic pirouettes.Hannah was somewhat of a loner constantly going off on her own to hide under a chair only to appear whenever she thought it was time for some more food which was about forty-seven times a day.Sophie is a lap dog who constantly craves human contact and attention. She is not happy unless she has a daddy’s lap to curl up in.

Everyone in our home is a senior citizen now so we will not be getting any more pets. There is no guarantee either of us will live long enough to care for a new adoptee. But for the past five decades our home has been filled with joy and love thanks to these thirteen wonderful critters.

First off, sorry to hear about your pet Hannah's passing. The key to your story is that your pets have filled your life with joy and love. That is what is all about. May everyone in your household have a long and healthy life.

Hi,

Long time lurker here. If I did post it would be under the name Mrs. X.
This is our Lucy, also lurking in this photo, taken last summer when she was a spry 14 years old. She was a character, who loved treats, children and Mr. X far more than she loved me.
She was a hardy soul. She had cancer, which she survived, and kidney failure, which she didn’t. Our hearts are broken.

Well Mrs. X thank you for being a lurker and sharing Lucy's story. I'm sorry to hear that she has passed. May your memories always be fond of her.

19 Last week I asked for some tips on how to housebreak, and acclimate, a rescue dog to our home. I appreciated all the information!

We are now on day 8, and what an eventful eight days it has been.

We brought him home on Friday, July 31st and he appeared happy to leave the dog rescue.

Late Saturday (August 1st), things took a turn and the doggie developed diarrhea and vomiting. We called the emergency clinic and they discouraged Hubby from bringing him in (they actually hung up on him after a one minute conversation... very odd as we have used the 24 hour clinic in the past).

He had a rough Sunday, so at 7:30am Monday morning (when our vet opens) we were on the phone and had him in before 10am.

She gave him a bunch of antibacterial medications (nothing new to us that we have not had to give to our last dog), some Ursodiol and demamarin (the horse pill... if he stays on it for the liver, he's going to do the liquid combo of Sam-e + Milk Thistle which are the main components of demamarin) as well as Cerenia for the vomiting (which is a wonder drug). Again, all drugs we were very familiar with.

She also drew blood for a blood panel.

She called us later that evening and the blood test results showed an ALT 10x normal, and other indications from high and low readings of possible gallbladder or liver disease, etc. We took the dog in on Tuesday for an ultrasound, and she also took more blood and sent that blood sample to a specialized lab down in Texas.

On Thursday after the results came back from the Texas blood lab, she sent over a referral to a (very) nice animal hospital for a more exact ultrasound. She is zoning in on the lower GI/pancreas.

That specialized place cannot get him in on an appointment until the end of the month, so we are doing the old "come to the emergency room and get in quickly" trick. (We have done this before, too.) This is a sanctioned sneak-in, however, as they called us and told us step-by-step how to do it on Monday, including finding out the wait time and when we should head over there.

On the upside... the doggie already knows his name! And, the housebreaking is going fairly well. There have only been three "accidents" where he has let loose at the bottom of the slider when we did not get there quickly enough to let him out. For a dog who never had to care where he went before, I am pretty happy with how quickly he is catching on.

We are still using the crate for nighttime sleeping. He is not yet trustworthy... especially after I found him walking on top of my end tables the other day. The family room couch is one thing to jump up on and take a nap, patrolling table tops is quite another.

Once we have his medical issues squared away (I am thinking positive that they WILL be taken care of), we will have private training lessons to get us to the point where he can join the adult dog training class.

And that is the end of week 1. Whew.

I started using it the next day, because of severe hip pain. There was some improvement even the first week, and now, two months later, the pain is almost gone except first thing in the morning when I get up. Yes, I'm going to keep taking it.

Thanks again, and bless you for mentioning it!

23 As for Lucky, her niçkname is Lucky Steaks. She got the nickname because one Superbowl I was cooking steak and per Charlie Brown's Dildo, I knew to allow the steaks to rest out of the fridge to allow them to come to room temp before cooking them. I now know to allow them to come to room temp in the microwave should one have a cat in the house. Lucky stole one steak and had eaten the edges off it before I recovered them in the basement. Not to worry my friend and I agreed and rinsed the steak and cooked it up anyway. Lucky is very content being an outdoor cat these days. And my steaks can safely rest on the counter...

40 Some people only keep their chickens for 2-3 years, since they decline in egg laying every year. Mine were 2.5, but I had planned to keep them around a few more years ... Wiley Coyote had other ideas, and killed 7 of 8 the other day. I should have kept them fenced just in the garden, but they liked to roam, and had been safe till now.

The good news is just this morning my 16 new chicks arrived in the mail ... to keep my one surviving Buff Orpington company. Small farmers seem to treat their livestock almost like pets at times, give them a good life, then they eat them. The sad part was when the survivor hen sat down next to her old friend ... who was dead, too broken up for me to save, the only one alive when I found her.

Two fawns nearby are almost like pets, and the same coyote is a threat to them still, but they seem to run toward my house to be safe. The coyote has decided this is good hunting grounds it seems ...

The part about removing the predator is a gun thread thing I guess ... gotta practice with the 30.06, the 22 does not have the necessary reach. Livestock and wildlife is a variation of "pets" I guess ... usually cool, sometimes cruel, but lots of new life.

In his youth, Conor hated toys with ears, I had a large box of animal shaped toys, all rendered earless by the pup, and finally threw them all away.

I think the Kong brand makes pretty tough toys, but I stopped buying him toys and he is now more gentle with his old favorites! You might check Kong out!

46 So sorry to hear of lost pet Morons, especially this week, as we had a close call with our cat Harli last Sunday. She spent 2 nights at the vet hospital (costing me a month's income). She has a mass in her bladder, possibly a blood clot. Watching kidney and liver function. But she's back home and her old self, at least. We'll continue to monitor her. 12 is too young to lose a cat - she's got a lot of mileage on her yet, I think.
They sent along a tube of appetite stimulating ointment for $62.50. Now, she may not have felt like eating at the hospital, but the minute she got home she was after the Fancy Feast and Temptations like a fiend. I hope I can return this tiny tube for a refund. This cat has NEVER lacked for appetite!

61 Last weekend Tanza and I completed the BigHorn 100. A bucket list item for me, one of the big rides I heard about when I first started distance riding. Tanza took amazing care of himself all weekend, including being by himself at the trailer on Thursday night and then he cracked me up by having a mini tantrum in the trailer when I stopped 10 miles from home to top off the p/u tank the little arabian was rocking my BAT steel trailer. He was sweated up from the tantrum when I unloaded him at home which he promptly fixed with a good roll in his sandy paddock.

63 My most sincere thanks to whoever, a couple of months ago, mentioned using turmeric to treat a dog's poor movement due to pain.

I started using it the next day, because of severe hip pain. There was some improvement even the first week, and now, two months later, the pain is almost gone except first thing in the morning when I get up. Yes, I'm going to keep taking it.

Thanks again, and bless you for mentioning it!

65 Well Abby had to have surgery on her spider bite. She was bitten 4 weeks ago by a spider, and it just never healed. She had a hole about an inch in diameter on her foot. The vet finally decided to go in and make sure there was nothing inside the wound and clean it out and stitch it up. She did fine with the surgery and has about 10 stitches in her foot. She was bouncing around today, so the soreness is gone. I get to take the stitches out next week because we will be on the road. I hope this is the last of the dog incidents for a while.

66 On the sad side, I was clearing weeds yesterday and think I found the skeleton of my feral barn kitty (called Camouflage for his coloring) that disappeared a few months ago. I think I will just let them be, but if I knew for sure I'd put them with the others in the orchard. I know there are coyotes hereabouts, but never see them so I can't take the steps I'd like to take!

If you can possibly do it, have your pet companion put down by a caring vet that will come to your home. Think of how frightening it must be to be taken to an alien place when you are terminal.

As a good and responsible caretaker, you will need to do this final step at some, but I am convinced it is far easier on both you and your pet to have it down at home.

90 ON the pet tips story: "If you get a kitten, do use your hands for play" to socialize him. I;ll have to admit that Rusty, the big red tabby I grew up with, was like that -- I played with him with my hands, teaching him to pounce, and as an adult he was very restrained. He'd play rough if you wanted to, but if you said "No claws" in the right tone, he would never use his little paw-daggers.

I've carefully not used my hands to play with other kittens, and not all of them were as easygoing as that. So maybe there is something to it.

Actually I did. The late tuxedo cat Oreo in her last weeks had to receive infusions of Ringer's lactate. She would sit quietly on Linda's lap and purr while I injected her with the fluid. I don't recall a camel hump -- but she was mostly black, so I might not have seen it.

She was a remarkably sweet cat. Whoever named her chose well.

In recent years, I have no experience with it. Our son brought home a feral kitten that he found in the woods who would later become named AWOL.

The first 4-5 months were fine but then the cat would start staying out for days at a time without coming home.

Weeks went by and he extended the time away from home.

At one point a year or so after we got him the trips away from home extended to weeks and then nearly a month. He would be gone for an extended time and then one day he would walk into the house and jump on the table to eat cat food.

One day I noted that he had been gone for nearly six months this time and I was pretty sure he was dead but the next day when I drove up there he was in the driveway waiting to get in.

He stayed around a few days after that time and then left again never to be seen.

He was a good cat, he would kill squirrels and bring them home for us as presents.

106 I put bulk tumeric and black pepper in capsules for myself. I also used to give just the tumeric to 2 elderly dogs with arthritis. The dogs also got devils claw herb in capsules. I take an ibuprofen or Alleve if I have a rough day. Everyone, including the horses gets MSM to aid with cartilage repair. I had one mare with severe knee arthritis and the herbals and MSM didn't touch that, she needed previcoxx to be pasture sound. But for the dogs and myself the tumeric has been great, I weaned myself off of daily ibuprofen taking it, and for older horses that were just a bit creaky and when when I was just a bit creaky the MSM was a help.

There's a variant called the Doll-Faced Persian, which is not accepted at shows, but they are much cuter to me. The cat on the Fancy Feast commercials and on the cans looks like a DFP.

It actually takes a pretty large amount of the turmeric spice to equal the capsules, when the latter are concentrated, and supposing the labels are reliable. If you like curry, like I do, a little curry (which already includes turmeric), will make a large amount of supplemental turmeric tasty. I just slapdash some curry spices on the spot. But if you don't like Indian food, try the capsules. Wifey takes the capsules. I eat very yellow chicken salad. lol.

I knew a kid who was not enjoying Latin I and who renamed the family dog Urgurus Durgurus because he said the whole language sounded like that.

The name stuck.

134 @132 --

We did have a dog named Spot on the farm. He was mostly white with a brown spot on his back by the hind legs.

He just showed up one morning, and we made him ours. Had him for years.

I don't remember how we lost him. He must have run off, because I know I didn't bury him.

Damn, I haven't thought of Spot in decades.

They have been broken for over a month. The server at minx went down, and the blog is running on the backup server. Moose out front should have told you.

141 German Short haired pointer, pedigree hunting and show champ blood lines, named dog. Because the entire family argued for months and could never agree on a name, so always said. "here dog, come on dog"., " Let's go dog". Best dog I ever had. Smart as most people, knew at least 25 commands,. Damn I miss dog.
