The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

I'm kind of burnt out on politics, so let's talk about something else today.

Like, noods.

I'm old enough to remember when noods in movies was controversial. I'm old enough to remember when the merits and demerits of noodity in movies were debated. I'm old enough to remember attractive young actresses being asked if they would get nood for a movie, and they would usually reply with something like: "well, yes." Then pause. "But only if the part called for it."

That proviso was their fig-leaf of respectability so they would claim they weren't just, you know, getting paid to titillate the audience.

(heh heh! he said "titillate".)

Not that there weren't noods in movies prior to the mid 60s when the whole controversy hit the mainstream. There are a number of pre-Hayes Code movies that have noods in them. Some years ago, I bought the deluxe DVD edition of Ben Hur which included, on a bonus DVD, the 1925 version, Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ, and there was a garish spectacle scene (I think it was one of those "triumph" celebrations for a victorious Roman hero) and there were a group of dancing girls parading along that, holy moley, I said to the mrs., those girls are nood. Or at least topless. I was quite surprised. Then I remembered that the Hayes Code didn't kick in until several years later.

Also the nood swim by Maureen O'Sullivan's body double in 1934's Tarzan and His Mate. And I just heard about Child Bride, a 1938 movie in which a 12-year-old girl was nood, briefly, for a skinny-dipping scene. Fun fact: according to imdb, the MST3K crew decided not to do this movie because the crew said it was too disturbing.

And of course there are others.

Anyway, the discussion in the 60s claimed to be about "noodity", which implied something general, but of course it wasn't. Because the only individuals who were getting nood in movies were young, attractive women. They never made movies where the plot involved 50-year-old fat guys getting nood. Fat lives matter! Or 70-year old grandmothers, either. Wrinkled lives matter!

I mean, face it, very few people look good nood. It's funny how many times I'm watching a TV show and there's a scene at the beach, and in the background there's all sorts of hotties walking around in skimpy bikinis, like that's what you'd see on your average beach, but in real life, beaches aren't like that. I've even been to beaches in Southern California, land of the hotties, and they're not like that. People are just people, not models.

So the movie industry didn't particularly want "noodity", they just wanted to show nood young ladies to sell tickets. But I suppose they didn't want to admit that, because that would make them look like what they were selling was a glorified peep show. Instead they cloaked their real intentions with lofty principles like "artistic freedom" and "censorship is wrong" as if they were courageous artists fighting for freedom to express themselves rather than money-grubbing hucksters who would show anything for a buck. This was the first public debate I remember witnessing that was completely dishonest.

Monday's Who Dis: Actress Kathleen Turner was quite the hottie -- about 40 years ago, when she starred in Body Heat, the remake/reboot of the classic noir film Double Indemnity back in 1981. Ted Danson was along for the ride in a supporting role, which did not call for him to wear blackface.

19 Weirdly, some attractive people look better with clothes on. And some 'average' people get naked and...wow...it all comes together.

Take Sinn Sage. Dressed, she'd be an average-looking chick, a 6 at best and maybe just a bar 6. But with her clothes off, you can see her toned body and her proportions just flow together wonderfully.

Honestly, that's why in casting for a nude part, you gotta see all the good stuff first. Yes, I know Hollywood is at least half there just so Producers can get laid, but there is a bare fig leaf justification for the nude cattle call.

28 I'm not against gratuitous nudity, but sometimes it's just ridiculous. and of course now the problem is they have to throw male nudity in, and lets be honest, most swinging dicks aren't appealing.

it used to at least be tangentially tied to the plot, sometimes only by a thread, but anymore, nudity in films reminds me of singing in musicals, it doesn't make sense most of the time when they break into song.

=========

Song and dance in musical is tied to emotional moments. The highs and lows of feeling for characters, and they express those emotions through song and dance.

Well, that's the ideal way to use it. Just like anything in art, though, it gets misused.

It's really just another way for characters to emote. It's brazenly artificial, of course, but as long as the verisimilitude of the piece is maintained, it shouldn't matter.

I would guess that it depends on which group is more powerful in the DNC today; Obama, Jarrett, and the Deep State who absolutely would want Rice, she's one of them: or Pelosi and the west coast radical wing, backed by the Tech billionaires, who want Harris because they already own her.

my gut feeling gives the edge to Harris.

Shawarma recipe from the other day AAR:

Meat: 1.25 lbs steak, 0.75 lb lamb Cooked medium-rare and uber thin sliced - verdict WIN. Delicious and tender, combo better simulates a real meat stack taste.

Bread: Store Pita - verdict LOSE. Impossible to get good pita around here suggest store bought Naan as a bready but mo betta alternative.

Homemade Tzatziki - verdict WIN. Just do it. Forgot dill, used fresh basil from the garden.

Spice set - verdict DRAW. The cloves and cinnamon are way too forward, suggest reducing relative amount. Suggest way more coriander, some marjoram and rosemary, and some lemon juice or zest. Could be spicier.

Marinate over night, sear off, thin slice and final quick stir fry. Serve under the sauce, tomatoes, red peppers, lightly grilled onions, fresh cucumber bits and if desired some feta...

Remember, Kshama Sawant, the idiot socialist on the Seattle city council, was well behind on election da,, and then magically eventually took the lead, after days and days of more ballots trickling in. Funny how that works.

This is what the Democrats want to impose on the country.

Oregon has mail-in voting, but at least all the ballots have to be in the hands of election officials by 8 PM on Election Day - a postmark isn't enough.

They're in serious pain.

Mulan and Black Widow both represent $1 billion holes on their balance sheets right now, most likely. Money they were expecting to get to make up for production and marketing costs already.

You'd really think that corporations would be clamoring the most for re-opening and returning to normal, but that would help Trump so they resist.

Because corporations are naturally conservative and primarily concerned with their profits.

Mr. Thor, EVERYONE wants to go home to their families at night. (And where I currently work, while there isn't enough material there to blow the place up like Beirut recently did, there is plenty of danger to where if I make the wrong turns or someone else does, none of us are going home, unless it's a funeral home.) That makes nobody - absolutely nobody - unique.

Bloomberg:
Joe Biden will not travel to Milwaukee this month to accept the Democratic nomination for president at the party convention due to concerns about the coronavirus, according to two people familiar with the travel plans.

Biden had been expected to attend the convention in person and deliver his acceptance speech, but the campaign recently scrapped those plans.

The Biden campaign declined to comment on his travel.

The people familiar with the plans said the former vice president will deliver his acceptance speech from Wilmington, Delaware, where he lives.

Pretty much the only nudity you see these days in main stream movies is some guy's stinky butt.

There seems to be a general boycott on boobs or at least getting a good look at the "girls" by the actresses.

A seen from the back cowgirl sex scene, often with the lady's rump covered with a sheet appears to be the coin of the realm for female nudity.

I could be wrong, and the 'ettes can set me straight here, but I think that everyone likes to see a pretty girl in the nude. Full frontal, whatever it's just beautiful in a way that's...uh...artistic and esthetically pleasing...not just sexual.

As opposed to seeing some dude's wang. No one wants to see that.

There's a reason that full frontal male nudity was used as a joke in several comedies a few years ago. ("Walk Hard", etc)

Anywho, Hollywood, bring back female nudity. It's almost always a plus.

And sometimes actually a necessity for the story.

290 Song and dance in musical is tied to emotional moments.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, running from a biplane in a cornfield at August 05, 2020 11:29 AM (UWqZJ)

Yeah, but art imitates life.

If people around me suddenly break out in song and dance over something I have done or an emotion I have had, I am running home, and I will never re-emerge.

I have never, not once, understood the appeal of musicals. The #1 way to make sure that I never see a show/movie is to tell me that it is a musical.

Posted by: Lizzy at August 05, 2020 11:38 AM (bDqIh)

We're unprotected, anyway. To insist that the cops are there to protect us is extremely unfair to the cops (because they CANNOT protect us) and it needs to stop.

292 188 I recently watched a documentary on the dropping of the bomb. The complexity and coordination of the Manhattan Project has to be the greatest scientific and engineering feat ever. Even more so than the moon landing to me.
Posted by: Can't resist temptation at August 05, 2020 11:46 AM (ODaO0)

The Apollo project had computers.

Computers that had their start in the Manhattan Project.

293 The 1917 Halifax explosion was about 2.9 kilotons, Texas city ~ 2Kt. A 150 meter crater from the Beirut explosion indicates a low kiloton level explosion. So this blast was comparable. The sun says 1/5 of Hiroshima or about 2.4 KT.

Posted by: An Observation at August 05, 2020 12:24 PM (IRhIZ)

294 195 Not to be crass, or funny, but you know a lot of people in and around Beirut still have memories of the 1975-1990 civil war, and a good many of them are freaked out by that explosion yesterday. You know that had to expose a lot of PTSD and trauma for people there, to add to the physical damage.

295 154 Axios thinks Biden's choices are down to Harris or Rice.

Rice has never run for office, and is up to her neck in Obamagate.

Harris would be plotting on how to remove Joe from office, starting on Inauguration Day.

Great choice.
Posted by: The ARC of History! at August 05, 2020 11:41 AM (I2/tG)

She has several plots already formed. She will choose the best one during the transition phase. Joe won't make February if elected.

What I wouldn't do for them to get hit with a history lesson: hey, you don't want to go back to work? Well, 39 years ago this month, the air traffic controllers went on strike! Guess what happened to them?

300 When female nudity became acceptable male nudity still wasn't. We don't see Johnny Weissmuller's complete butt in that Tarzan movie, just the loin cloth. Today male butt nudity is used to humiliate or for laughs. Sometimes it's also for titillation if the actor is mainstream and handsome enough. Most titillation is the male star actor being shirtless, but that's not new. It's always been that way. Male frontal nudity is rare, but it can happen nowadays. When it's done it's usually for a comedic or humiliation scene. If it's drama it's just a quick flash. This is for American films. European films go full monty for minutes.

301 187---Like every musical in existence?
Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at August 05, 2020 11:46 AM (ejsiI)
----------------------------
Nah.
There is fine characterization in some musicals --- The Music Man, My Fair Lady, The King and I, for starters.

And most have strong emotional content, even if it's often schlocky.

302 53 Jackie Mason had a funny take on movie nudity: "Every movie has nudity these days, because they say it happens every day. Well, people eat soup every day, and never see a movie where people are eating soup."

Ann Coulter made a similar joke once, something like, "Well, everybody picks their nose, too. Would you do that on camera?"

303 54 The legend behind the invention of lip gloss was that it was an acceptable way to suggest the aftermath of a certain oral endeavor.
Someday I'll find the book that mentioned that.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at August 05, 2020 11:21 AM (2JVJo)

I had heard that what eventually became lipstick was invented in ancient Egypt by (or for) prostitutes who specialized in, well, you know what, and wanted to make that part of their body more enticing for potential customers.
Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader, Pants Monitor & Social Distancing Professional at August 05, 2020 11:25 AM (JHbSi)

I'm a little skeptical about the prostitute part. Proper Egyptian ladies used to put makeup everywhere, including on their boobs when they were wearing one of those dresses that only go up to the sternum.

305 Well, Mr. Muse, I have to admit I like to see nude good-looking women in movies. Hell, I like to see nude good-looking women anywhere I get the chance. If I didn't I would probably be gay.
