David Azerrad: Conservatism, Inc. Has Failed And Is Incapable of Self-Reform

Great piece by David Azerrad.

His review of Conservatism, Inc. -- informed by having recently worked inside of it -- is brutal.

What is conservatism in America today? It's hundreds of millions of dollars a year spent fiddling while Rome burns. It's ideas with little to no consequence. It's getting trampled all over by History, but while yelling Stop!

Conservatism is the seven cheers for capitalism and the deafening silence on demographic change, feminism, and corporate malfeasance. It's the same tired cast of speakers blathering about limited government almost a century after the New Deal. It's the platitudinous Reagan quotes and the worn-out Buckley anecdotes. It's the mindless optimism and the childish exhortations--if something can’t go on forever, it won't!

..

If this is conservatism, then we may be inclined to say, let the conservatives keep it. Perhaps the time has come for patriotic Americans tired of the Left desecrating all they hold dear to go beyond conservatism?

Conservatism may indeed be unsalvageable at this point. The old guard is too heavily invested in--nay, it benefits too much from the status quo to own up to its failures, correct its leftward drift, and reground itself in the realities of the 21st century. Its business model works, as evidenced by the hundreds of millions of dollars that flow into its coffers each year.

Read the whole thing. His main point is that Conservatism, Inc. still believes its mission is to defend society from a leftwing take-over.

Conservatism, Inc. cannot see -- or is paid not to see -- that the leftwing take-over already happened, and they won on every single front, often without even having to fire a shot.

Thus, the real mission for any true conservative is a counter-revolutionary offensive against well-defended ground, not defending territory that was lost years ago.

Again, they just can't see this or admit this. They still think it's 2003 and that we're doing a pretty great job of keeping the Maoists at bay.

This is why they're forever nattering on about civility and tone and all sorts of secondary or tertiary issues -- they still think that it's 2003 and the war will be won through Roberts Rules of Order and the tricks and tropes they learned in high school forensics.

And they babble about such inanities because the people paying them to babble -- the leftwing, #Woke corporate donor class -- is happy about the leftwing's takeover of all important institutions and certainly doesn't want to see the disruptions that a determined counter-offensive by actual conservatives would entail.

As I say, read the whole thing.

To a degree, perhaps. Among the famous ones. The lesser hangers-on are probably actually conservatives, and that is a problem. There's a reason I'm not a conservative. I am not looking to conserve this system as it is today. I'd like to see a regression to the Constitution. I'm a regressionist, if anything.

The problem with conservatives who aren't just on the take is that they have no fixed position. They seek to conserve whatever it is today, now, this moment. Every time the Left wins some battle, that post-bellum scenario becomes the new baseline. This is why many conservatives fight for unfettered divorce today, for example, while deploring the advent of national no-fault divorce under Reagan. It is the status quo, and it must be maintained.

Every loss forms the new defensive position. They have no fixed anchor. They are not a ship in a harbor, lashed to a specific point. They are floating in open sea while the thrusters maintain relative position. If a gale blows them off course, the thrusters just seek to maintain the position of wherever they end up.

21 Ace, another great piece.

This is why they're forever nattering on about civility and tone...

This was actually a major reason why I quit my last job.

I tried to go into my boss' office to complain about a co-worker who was frankly being nasty and mouthy to me, and I was at my wit's end.

Did he listen to me? Of course not. I just ended up getting a 10-minute lecture about my "tone," because I wasn't being deferential enough when I wanted to see him. He also made me sit and wait in his office for another 30 minutes doing nothing, while he was on the phone, knowing the whole time I was already ridiculously behind on my work, because other co-workers were refusing to do *their* work.

Glad I finally left that place. The boss actually did offer me my job back yet AGAIN after my final blowup, but I said no, because I knew nothing would ever change.

(Sorry for making this personal.)

24 Conservative, Inc. is largely second-Gen conservatives who grew up and came into politics inside the system. It's not Bill Buckley writing "God and Man at Yale", but Jonah Goldberg and Ben Shapiro writing for campus publications as the conservative voice. The problem is that when you come up inside the system, it's hard to see anything but the system, or to see how rotten it really is.

54 I think conservatism and Conservative, Inc. are two different things. Conservative, Inc. are grifters. They know full well that they are liberalism lite. They're deceivers, not self-deceived.

But conservatism is likely just dead. As near as I tell, conservatives want it that way. They're never going to embrace things like eliminating no-fault divorce, refusing to subsidize unwed mothers, more limited roles for women outside the home. And if the traditional nuclear family ideal is off the table, then so is conservatism.

Harvard stooge Laurence Tribe gives away the ultimate Democrat election game plan to Joy Reid. As he explains, via massive use of mail-in ballots which, as we have already seen, cause chaos, confusion, and delay, the electoral college could be unable to choose a clear winner. If no winner is determined by January 20 then, according to Tribe, Nancy Pelosi would become president...if the Democrats retain control of the House.

59 Brilliant! Yes, "conservatism" is a dead word, a dead movement. A "conservative" could never grasp why the University system, for example, needs to be utterly destroyed and replaced with something else. Only a Radical would propose that.

It's deeper than the Kochs. Basically after WWII the Right was anchored by libertarians (favoring maximized freedom), while the left was anchored by progressives (favoring maximized equality), and conservatives (favoring stability) made up the center. Blue-collar conservatives tended to lean left, because of social safety programs and support for unions, but they were also generally patriotic. Meanwhile white-collar conservatives leaned right due to support for free trade and deregulation.

The turning point was the fall of the USSR. Without the existential threat of communism the libertarians started to pull away from conservatives due to differences on social issues. Progressives did the same with blue-collar conservatives.

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at August 04, 2020 04:51 PM (SgjGX)

62 I wrote a big essay back in about 2010 about the end of the left-right spectrum, and how I didn't call myself a "conservative," and so on. But I never published it, because the political landscap was (even then) seemingly constantly in flux, and by the time I was ready to hit the "publish" button, the whole essay already seemed out of date. So I'd rewrite it, and agin reached for the "publish" button -- only to learnt thaty it had already become outdated again. So I just gave up.

But the fundamentals of the essay have remained true ever since. Left/right is an ancient outdated and now completely irrelevant divide, and the correct dividing criterion is freedom-vs.-collectivism. There can be left-wing collectivism as well as what used to be called "right"-wing collectivism (like 1920s Italian fascism). But I think even back then the way o dividing things into right and left was incorrect, and that fascism, Nazism, Soviet communism, Maoism, fundamentalist Islam and the modern-day "woke" cult are all aspect of the same urge -- collectivist unity, safety in the crowd.

And anyone opposed to this way of thinking is automatically a freedom-loving individualist, whatever they might formerly have been classified on the old left/right scale.

Posted by: Someguy at August 04, 2020 04:52 PM (Zm+LZ)

You might as well just call it Cronyism, another face of the same old thing. As societies get fat and comfortable, the people controlling economic activity tend to take over the government, and the government takes them over in turn, until they become indistinguishable from each other. Once that happens, a Ruling Class develops and Government and Business work hand in hand to keep the poor ignorant plebs paying for everything without figuring out how controlled they are.

One of Communism's big failures was not to realize how fabulously wealthy the Ruling Class could make themselves if they embraced the fascist/mercantilist model.

I think that was the first inkling that his mask was slipping, simply by accepting the premise of the Left and the Deep State.

Older pennies which had a much higher copper amount, and represent most of the pennies in circulation are really what they are trying to get rid of. Yup. The betrayal of basic Christian principle is best illustrated by the Christ-haters on the Supreme Court, and Clarence Thomas will forever have my admiration for standing up to them. People like Ben Shapiro and Jonah Goldberg hate Jesus as much as Elena Kagan and RBG, and are core influencers in Conservative Inc.

Yet when you look back at Irving Kristol and Lucianne Goldberg, it's pretty clear they had no particular hostility to the American system of governance and traditional values. Or they did, and just hid it far better. It's interesting that Jerry Seinfeld and Rachel Bloom have been more effective, even by accident, in critiquing the modernist project than Ben Shapiro ever has been.

183 Older pennies which had a much higher copper amount, and represent most of the pennies in circulation are really what they are trying to get rid of. A couple of years ago they had to pass a law to make it illegal to melt down pennies or to export them to another country where they could be melted. 2.5 grams of copper would be worth about 1.6 cents. So it only takes 62% copper to be worth a penny.

- -

Pennies haven't been 100% copper for a loooong time.

Most of the metal in the vast majority of pennies in circulation are far far more zinc than copper.

For $2.90/lb, the juice would not be worth the squeeze to somehow snatch up extreme vintage coins (worth more on the collector market than the base metal value btw) by engineering a coin shortage.

Yeah because you don't want that shit in your lungs. It's why so much of Asia does the mask thing, not for infection but air quality. Air particles small enough to pass through go in your lungs and back out. Larger stuff won't make it to your lungs. It's a Goldilocks zone that the mask is meant to protect you against hose particles. Not some virus.

The modern incarnation of Conservatism did not exist back then, not as a unified concept. It was the Republican party that pushed women voting. Progressivism also at this point of time and throughout the first half of the 20th century was a movement that existed in both political parties, though it wasn't necessarily anti-free market(some were, some weren't) and was at some points anti-communist. Palmer raids for instance.

Then there's an explosion, the red flash, and THEN, maybe a half second later, there's a massive detonation, undoubtedly triggered by the explosion. I won't go on about the difference between the two, other than that they are different physical processes. Explosions make a big boom - Detonations make a BIG BADA BOOM. Supports the idea that a big pile of ammonium nitrate was there.

Yeah the total catalog of stuff they own -- and they bought a TON of stuff to own it before starting Disney+, even content from other studios -- is not all on there. Not even close. Most of their really great classic stuff is missing. We had it for a month because they gave this super great deal for the Fire stick and I went through it. Almost nothing I actually wanted to see or missed.

These streaming services would be much, much better served to have a VERY MUCH LARGER catalog. Instead because servers are expensive, they go cheap and only have a little at a time.

301 And they babble about such inanities because the people paying them to babble -- the leftwing, #Woke corporate donor class -- is happy about the leftwing's takeover of all important institutions and certainly doesn't want to see the disruptions that a determined counter-offensive by actual conservatives would entail.

The same thing could be said for the ambulatory shitstains in congress who pretend to represent the right.

The example of John Lewis' funeral is a perfect example: we have to wear the Mask of Cain (more and more frequently under pain of fine / arrest), we must social distance and we must quarantine. But, the ought-to-be-hung scum that went to that race pimp's funeral didn't mask, didn't distance and won't quarantine. They have been granted permission to flout the boot of the State.

"Conservatism, Inc" and the GOP-E never have to live with the consequences of the left ruining their entertainments, desecrating their monuments, being legally persecuted or physically attacked.

They can buy or beg an indulgence from the living hell of the Left.

We must bow and kiss the boot of the State.

God help those bastards if there ever was a real revolution.

305 Greetings, all. First time, long time...

It's a great article. Indeed, "The Long March Through The Institutions"... worked. With the communist left taking-over most every mainline Christian denomination their usurpation of literally every institution - save, perhaps, for now, the military - is complete.

Meanwhile the WFB worshipers still seem to think this is a problem of "branding". While they were looking for an eternity of hills to not die upon the left was systematically destroying them.

Conservatism, should have been about not so much the defense but rather the promotion and expansion of Anglo-American Civilization.

If Conservative, Inc. were designed from WFB on down to fail on purpose the communists could not have done a better job than what unfolded.

308 282 Well states start with warlords and prominent generals. Pinochet for instance, literally accomplished just that. Ataturk did as well for Turkey. The prominent leaders of our revolution did not operate in a republican environment while prosecuting the war, and there was a proposal to make Washington king. The Roman republic was established by the Roman elite, who also had their powerful leaders, throwing out the Etruscans.

Posted by: Someguy

Take a deeper look. In each case the state that developed was culturally determined. Even Ataturk.

Trying to get a new, proper republic out of the current culture is like making steel from rust.
Posted by: Brother Tim sez: There is always More Stupid at August 04, 2020 05:35 PM (OUMaO)

That is a fair point in that our country is facing cultural decay such as the collapse of marriage and related demographic collapse similar to the case of the fall of the Roman empire. That doesn't rule out a republican form of government(we could end up going in any number of directions), but means we either need to see a rapid reformation of the culture or that any ensuing states will be short-lived until those who have a culture of stable families are the only ones left by default. I think we are going to see warlords with extraordinary powers(that's part of being a warlord with an army after all) and future government forms will ultimately depend on the decisions of a small group of people though. Any republic would therefore necessarily be preceded by something approximating a dictatorship.

Checklist conservatism was a failed ideology even as far back as 2003.

The Azarad piece is excellent albeit light on policy details. Unfortunately, it is probably about a generation or two too late. At best the bleeding can be staunched. The most attractive alternative at this point is some kind of peaceful separation that maintains some economic and foreign policy ties and even that may not be tenable.

Anything against this and it was you're some brown hating bigot.

Not to fuss too much, but America knows very well what the problems are.

America's politicians do not want to solve them, all they want to do is talk about how they're going to solve them. Funny how they never get around to fixing them.

And the literal problems that are/represent 2% of the population have put a system in place where you aren't allowed to talk about the actual problems.

The "left-right" axis is a vast oversimplification. There's this binary, two-sides thing that has become ingrained in our political thinking. It has it uses and is pretty much how things shake out at any moment. But it is grossly inadequate to understand the political reality.

There are far more dimensions than just one. Far more. A position in political space required far more than one coordinate.

At any given time, there is some prevailing alignment that sort of runs a single axis through that space, and one is left or right depending on how one's own position projects on that axis.

So back in the '80s and '90s roughly, we were all on the same side at the axis as George Will and the Old Guard types.

But we had vast differences, vast differences in position along the other coordinates. It was just those weren't important enough to matter.

But then comes a Realignment. The issues and conflicts of the current day shift things, and a new axis becomes the focal point.

That's what's happening right now.

The Cuck Class is very far from us on this new emerging axis.
