Yeesh! I asked it wrong earlier, I asked if he can hit a curveball, but gosh, a 27 year old relief pitcher?
27 is kind of the sweet spot in baseball, enough experience to be really great at the game but still in great enough physical shape to do it at the best level. So if he's any good, he'll be fine. Good relief pitching is extremely premium. Hs one year so far in the majors he was 5-1 with a 3.58 ERA and 1.23 ratio/whip and 1 save opportunity. He's either middle relief or was converted to relief after being a starter. That's pretty solid numbers so I doubt his career is in any danger. Does Apple continue with its planned obsolesce?
The crazy thing about this particular action by Apple is that it was literally the opposite of planned obsolescence. Old phones with old batteries tended to crash when stressed with heavy CPU usage because the fading battery couldn't provide enough power. Apple could have said, good, buy a new phone. Instead they spent the resources necessary to detect when an older phone was failing and reduce the stress on the battery only when it was overloaded by too much processor usage. So now because of the lawsuits and bad reporting on the issue, there is a checkbox in settings that is basically, do you want your phone to crash when you need it most? 274 264 He did not get $250m. Settled suits are not settled for the full amount. My guess is $50ish.
___________________________________ Were I to guess, a settlement this early suggests about $250k. The Washington Post will likely have a self-insured retention plan in effect. This allows them to settle for significant amounts without bringing in a Re-insurer giving them a little more independence to handle it the way they want. These entities get so many of these suits, it's not economically feasible to have a regular policy and allow the insurance company to make the call on Professional Liability claims unless it is a HUGE exposure. What generally happens on a case like this is that the WP will set a reserve. The Re-insurer will monitor the case and if they agree with the reserve (and it is significantly under the "deductible" of the self-insured retention plan) they will keep their hands off and let the WP handle it. I think that's what happened here. Posted by: Orson at July 24, 2020 03:42 PM (Ku+nR) 317

It became a thing because the media lied about it, in a turn of events that shouldn't surprise anyone. Gell-Mann Amnesia is a real thing: everything the media writes about, they're usually wrong. Some would call that "building a crappy product and applying a band-aid that weakens user experience". It's an inherent thing in lithium-ion batteries, which all consumer electronics currently use. Yeah but he's right, that's the extreme exception. There are a handful of long-term relief pitchers, most of whom we know by name but most aren't truly great for very long at all. And Rivera's pitchers were insanely hittable, he beat batters by playing against their experience and expertise. A low end batter would have eaten him up because he freaking floated pitches right over the zone again and again. For him it was about mind games and messing with the batter's head, not killer stuff or placement. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 24, 2020 03:46 PM (KZzsI) 346

Part of the reason for the super slim phone is the way they're used. Because they are designed to be nearly impossible to use as a real phone (hold to your head and talk) people have to hold them out in their fingertips and that sucks if the phone is at all heavy.

This is the same company that admitted they had deliberately slowed down older models of the phone so people would be pressured to buy new ones, you remember, right?
Nope. You're falling prey to Gell-Mann amnesia. Apple deliberately slowed down older models only if the older model had a fading battery and only when CPU usage was straining the battery. So that people would not be pressured to buy a new phone. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at July 24, 2020 03:49 PM (2lndx) 360

324 I'd be fine with an extra half millimeter of thickness to have a replaceable battery. Personally, I'd prefer a phone that's sealed better from the elements than one with a back that opens. I would also prefer a phone that doesn't require duct tape to hold the battery on, as every removable-battery device I owned used to after a few years of use. Fortunately we can both buy the kinds of phones that meet our preferences. Unless, of course, misguided lawsuits or government regulations mandate one person's choice over another's. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at July 24, 2020 03:43 PM (2lndx) ---- It wouldn't be hard. Make every exterior connection wire go through a plastic bulkhead. Make the circuit resistant to shorts wire to wire and wire to ground. While you are at it, add an external hard switch that disables and disconnects the microphone and cameras. You could do something similar with a replaceable battery pack. It might cost an additional $5-$10 per unit? You would probably need a slightly thicker phone to make up for the lost internal volume too. Posted by: rd at July 24, 2020 03:52 PM (+0uDE) 371

Motorola put out a series of phones that were supposed to be really tough. They were small, with shitty screens, and they covered the OS with junk that slowed everything down. But they were resistant against water. Not water proof, just water resistant. Heh, you bought that tripe? What would you expect those thieves to say when they get caught sandbagging older phones?
They weren't. That literally was not what was happening. I develop software for phones, I know WTF I'm talking about. Apple got a lot of complaints that older phones shut off at random, and people then had no phone for 30-40 seconds while it rebooted. The cause is that Li-Ion batteries lose peak amperage capacity as they age, so if you run some shitty free-to-play game that wasn't optimized the phone needs to draw a lot of power. The battery can't supply that much and so everything crashes and the phone shuts off and restarts. Apple put in this mitigation at the same time that they'd spent a year having the entire OS re-optimized for older chips at the expense of new phones. If they were trying to sandbag people there are far, far easier ways to do it. Posted by: Ian S. at July 24, 2020 03:53 PM (ZGrMX) 378

If he goes to any college that isn't Hillsdale, the teachers are going to be gunning for him on day 1. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Chrome. I'm not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I'd post to let you know.
