A few years back swans were being encouraged to be on our small lakes because, we were told, they will attack the pooping geese.
They found out that they are only aggressive to the pooping geese if the geese come toward their nest or young. Otherwise the swans don't care. They are beautiful out on the water though Posted by: Bruce at July 31, 2020 09:36 AM (vd8XM) 38

The last two winters have been nothingburgers up here in Maine - at least on the coasts. In-land they've been bad but it's been just warm enough by the ocean to make the nor'easters just nasty rain storms. Also as far as Swans being nasty - my grandparents trained a swan that was living on their creek in Maryland who was old and solitary. His name was Gus and he loved corn. We'd feed him by hand. The problem is when he'd come around for his corn, and you didn't have any, Gus would let you know about it. Posted by: Defenestratus at July 31, 2020 09:45 AM (9V81o) 84

At first I thought this was a later painting, not from the 1600s. On looking closer I can see the resemblance in technique to Rembrandt and that Dutch period. I like the way he uses light to create the impression of feather details. I like how he takes the idea of the graceful swan and shows the same bird in a violent, active pose. (It's true. Swans can be vicious things and have been known to injure small children.) It's an interesting, well done image. I would think it would appeal to hunters and outdoorsmen.
Upon embiggening, you can see the thin layers of paint, quite flat. I saw that in Robert Bateman paintings: incredible detail with thin coats of oil paint. Posted by: JTB at July 31, 2020 09:51 AM (7EjX1) 120
If there's a swan or a goose, there should be a trail of poop and terrified people who have been attacked for no reason by the vicious, worthless birds.
So this is clearly a work of fiction. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 31, 2020 09:51 AM (hYcqw) 121

Golfed at a nearby course that is on a river and, of course, has ponds. About 9 of the greens are so covered in goose poop that it's impossible to putt. We have our own rule though. On the green, pick up the ball count one more for your putt, then to the ball wash. Scrub that thing up like Bill Murray looking at the Mrs. Crane

As I understand it, the goal of feminism was to be "equal" to men. Now the entire concept of "women" is being eliminated.
/way to go progs! Posted by: shibumi, living in Clown World at July 31, 2020 10:04 AM (ZCiJZ) +++++++++++ Yup. There's a reason that the TERF ("trans-exclusionary radical feminist") movement exists. And why, if you're a committed feminist, it is the only sensible choice. But they are on the outs. If you're a feminist, you *should* be a TERF because without women as a concept - which is what the trans movement asserts - there is no point to your movement. In fact, your movement lost. The trans movement is in the process of destroying feminism. And it will probably win. And somehow, feminism's replacement is actually worse than what it is replacing... And geese are stupidly aggressive ahoes but supposedly swan are even worse. Peppermint > John Wick 2 Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 31, 2020 10:36 AM (NWEal) ========= The John Wick sequels are garbage. Obsessed with world building that makes no sense, Wick no longer has any clear motive for anything he's doing, and the movies drag horribly between their fight scenes. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, running from a biplane in a cornfield at July 31, 2020 10:37 AM (UWqZJ) I wouldn't call them garbage. It's like when a band releases a debut album and everyone raves about how original they are, can't get enough of them. A year or so passes, and they release a follow up, and the second album has a lot of the same hooks, same flourishes, same musical themes, and suddenly critics are saying they're tired and unoriginal. Meanwhile, fans are going to their shows, holding up their lighters, singing along. Posted by: BurtTC at July 31, 2020 10:51 AM (hku12) 477

Posted by: Maskhole at July 31, 2020 10:45 AM (cGEUA) ++++++++++ Yup. That is why the government will not acknowledge or attempt to rectify what it has become. Everyone, from the common black hats, to the dominant indifferent, to the tiny minority (it probably rounds comfortably to zero) of white hates, knows this. To expose it is to kill it. It is a cancerous husk, and the all know it. The black hats appreciate their power, the indifferent won't endanger their paychecks, and the white hats believe that the edifice of corruption and evil is better than a power vacuum and work to enable it's existence even if they try not to expand it. We crossed the knee of the curve long ago, probably in the late 70s or early 80s. It's an exponential function and it will only get worse. The collapse that the white hats are warding off and that the indifferent are ignoring will come anyway, and sooner than anyone thinks. Exponents are a bitch. I have no problem with the number of assassins in the movies. That's kind of fun. They're everywhere.
It's very boring and makes no sense. It was interesting in the first movie that John Wick was an ex-assassin, because that's unusual and what made him a mistake to tangle with. In the sequel (I didn't watch 3 after the dumpster fire that is 2), everyone and their mom is a paid killer. Yawn. Posted by: spindrift at July 31, 2020 10:59 AM (h5TKJ) 525

Posted by: Insomniac - Ex Cineribus Resurgo at July 31, 2020 11:07 AM (NWiLs) I watched the first episode. You know what's getting me down in all of this? It's not the portrayal. It's the cynicism and nihilism. There's no hope in this stuff anymore-- there's nothing to aspire to-- there's nothing to enjoy. Everyone's secretly corrupt, everything's secretly controlled by Weyland-Yutani type amoral scumbag corporations, everyone has a dark secret, nothing matters, blah blah blah. There are no true friends, everyone backstabs everyone else, innocence and idealism gets immediately crushed. I'm not saying these things aren't real and don't happen, because they obviously do. I just don't enjoy it as escapism. If I want cruelty and exploitation and hatred and oppression and corruption I'll read the fucking news. Posted by: Vanya at July 31, 2020 11:13 AM (BAsqb) 603

I don't actually like many of the Godzilla movies.
Even the original without the American additions I find to be ponderous and stilted (the attack on Tokyo is magnificent, though). I always thought Gamera was the better Toho monster series, but that may be my childhood talking. Posted by: Ian S. at July 31, 2020 11:13 AM (6XLoz) 606

The Canada goose is one of eight species of geese. Named for Canada, which is their original breeding ground, ornithologists use the name Canada goose when referring to this bird, not "Canadian goose" as popularly believed. Canada geese are monogamous. They mate for life and begin breeding when they are two years old. Yeah that's why I dont like stuff such as Better Call Saul, no matter how well written and clever it is. Its misery and unrelenting darkness with no hope. Shows without likable characters or hope, without anything decent or good in them are misery I don't care to participate in. Even the Sopranos had some decent people in it, and you could root for the characters sometimes because they were not relentlessly one-note grim scumbags. I think The Boys could be absolutely brilliant if they would make one small change in the premise.
Following is a quote from the Wiki Stub describing it; I have only changed One Word, all that it would take to make it truly great. "The Boys is set in a universe where superpowered Congressmen are recognized as heroes by the general public and owned by powerful corporation Vought International, which markets and monetizes them. Outside of their heroic personas, most are arrogant and corrupt." Posted by: Tom Servo at July 31, 2020 11:17 AM (Kpl3J) 625
