I had to pick it up and bring it outside because it was not leaving after I'd sequestered the cats and opened the back door and the fireplace. Brought it outside, rinsed the soot off, gave it some water, parked it in the shade in a corner of the garden...

https://stoatnet.org/birbfree.jpeg

...and buried it by some tomato plants a couple hours later. Birb ded, so sad. At least it died doing what it loved: not being inside my fireplace.

90 So, yesterday, a good distance from my house, I was filling up my truck as I was returning home from my temp job, and I was thinking, "Man, it's damn near a 100 degrees. 'Just got paid today, got me a pocket full of change...' I sure could use a beer."

Therefore after topping off my truck, I hit reverse gear (I drive a stick, shut up) and backed into an empty parking space. A quart sure sounded good. I walked up to the door and there was...a lengthy letter, stating that due to Gov Abbott's orders, in order to enter the store, I was required to wear a mask.

And then, I saw it. Clear as day. A vision. It was a vision of a table. And money on it. And a business owner flipping me off and leaving the money on the table.

Fuck them. I drove off. I enjoy a good beer but I don't need one that much.

93 I left this on the last thread...

I live in Contra Costa County, Calizuela. This was a great place for 50 odd years. Perfect weather, relatively uncrowded. It was paradise.

The GW Bush Admin opened the immigration floodgates. Available housing barely increased, cheap labor flourished, and houses skyrocketed. A reliably Republican area became inundated with people who do but understand liberty or our culture. Do not be fooled by all the national republicans who said that prop 187 (which made illegal state services for illegal immigrants and that republicans did not fight for after it won 60-40). It was the mass rush of new citizens who were amnestied in and who made our state reliably commie that drove out conservatives. I am one of the remaining few in a state where whites represent only 36.5%.

I owe 700k On my house and I will be selling it soon. Going to Colorado to join the fight against the libs and preach the horrors of liberalism and I will not have a mortgage, after years of basically being house rich and life poor.

I hate what my state has become. But I will not let my children grow up in schools where sexual education means discussing the joys of anal sex and butt plugs (I am not joking). Or where my son will be looked down upon by scorn.

I fully expect the National divorce will happen. Likely with a lot of thrown dishes. And with Calizuela laying behind enemy lines.

I am married to an immigrant. She came from Eastern Europe and lived through the CW there. She and all her friends see it coming. Heard Mark Levin talk about how he still wants more immigration but wants limits. But unless the schools are fixed and teach American values we are only importing more canon fodder for the libs.

I cry for this country and I will miss my state horribly. Things will not get better.

On the one hand, if you support monolithic government-run schools, you'd have to oppose reopening that single point of infection, one that warehouses every kid in the community in the same place.

On the other, it is crazy that even after an epidemic they still think it's best to have all children in a community in the same school system.

God decided to have a little fun with me earlier. I
went to water the lawn so it won't look like hay. I'm about half way
done and the dark clouds roll in and a few rumbles of thunder. So I keep
going thinking when it rains I'll stop. Then it got very dark and the
thunder got louder. So I figured okay, it's about to rain. I'll let the
rain finish the rest of it. I went inside and the sun came out

212 Douglas Bader* has done more than Tammy Duckworth has in her whole life.

*Lost both legs and a knee when he pranged his Bulldog doing unauthorized acrobatics. Later he was reinstated to the RAF and cleared to fly Spitfires and Hurricanes. He flew combat during Dunkirk and Battle of Britain. Became an ace. Was captured during a Rhubarb. He escaped a hospital. Once recaptured was sent to a Stalag in Germany where he escaped again. After this he was put in Colditz with all the other problem POWs. Once he was liberated, he was informed there were orders forbidding him from immediately flying combat.

After the war he would visit others suffering similar problems to give them encouragement. One such was a small boy who got burned so badly they had to amputate his legs. Bader was told the boy didn't realize how bad he is, he rounded on the man telling him to never let the boy think that for then he will surely be defeated.

Douglas Bader was a childhood hero.

As an adult I realized he was the most stubborn man in the UK, and certainly in the RAF, which had a lot of contenders for that title.

He was a fantastic leader, tactically sound, but a meathead when it came to strategy. A loss of legs led to less greying out in combat. But he escaped certain death when he got out of his shot-down Spitfire by leaving a pinned leg behind.

He was not privy to the secrets that made his bosses decide as they did. So he was wrong in a big way in two different decisions.

260 For a while, I went to Case Western Reserve University, on the eastern side of Cleveland.

Right next to CWRU on Euclid Blvd was The Hough, a very rough African American neighborhood.
There was a McDonalds on the edge of campus that was called the Black Mac, and the bathroom was kept locked all the time, and there was always a cop/security guard on duty there.
That was 1974-75.

Since then, it has actually gotten a lot better.

The Southern end of the campus (where I lived) was actually in Cleveland Heights, which was a pretty nice suburb. Except you had to go up and down a big hill to and from classes. Up and down the so-called Elephant Steps.
The northern end of the campus was (you guessed it) bordered by Martin Luther King Blvd.
Clues, we got clues.

U-564 was one of the smaller Type VIIC boats, not really meant for trans-Atlantic operations.

439 USS Nautilus

She made the win at Midway possible. The DD that was holding her down was returning to the IJN formation, and the Dauntless dive bombers followed her track to the CVs.

Plus later she hit the IJN CV Kaga with a torp in the battle. The torpedo fell apart. The air flask saved several IJN sailors.

The CO got a Navy Cross for that patrol. He did very good in an ungainly SS.

442 I'll let Grump decide the issue at the voting booth, and limit myself to 2 observations.

I do not have a good feeling about the football coach - overall he seems like standard-issue seat-warming Chamber of Commerce GOPe - but I suppose he'll vote the right way (ha! IF the Senate actually has anything of importance to vote on, in our post-political era of Congress barely existing).

And the irony is beyond words, Trump actively opposing Sessions (who would surely vote the right way on the few key agenda items, IF they ever come up for votes, which is doubtful), while otherwise making zero effort to shape or change the congressional GOP.

Posted by: rhomboid

It only took a few days for German sub to make it to the Atlantic shipping lanes from Kiel. Probably less from the Atlantic port (Brest) in France.

It took three weeks running on the surface at 15-20 knots for an American Fleet boat to get to Japanese shipping lanes.

The Japanese had some big subs too, because it took them a long time to get to American waters.

477 It was the Japanese trying to sink the US submarine Nautilus that allowed McClusky and his two squadrons of Dauntless diver bombers to find Nagumo's carriers.

They spotted the Japanese can that had tried to sink the sub hurrying somewhere and just flew on ahead.

Then it gets really weird. After the three squadrons of dive bombers had turned three of the Japanese carriers into funeral pyres, USS Nautilus catches up and takes a shot at Kaga. The torpedo ran straight and hit the carrier but failed to explode. In fact the torpedo broke in two with the warhead sinking to the depths while the other half with the empty air flask floated. Some Japanese then used it as an improvised life raft.

522 @477 Then it gets really weird.

------------------

And then there was the USS Tambor, which did a somewhat less spectacular job during the battle...

540 Sessions made grievous errors of judgement, that's fairly clear, but life is complicated, and he'd likely be a more useful body in the Senate than the coach. Nothing similar for him to screw up there.

And while the recusal was the central thing in question, the strategy on "sanctuary" lawlessness was (is) also pretty lame. With-holding grants, and some lawsuits. Practically an invitation for more defiance. Which we're seeing.

One mystery (to me) - I think Sessions said he offered his resignation very early in the debacle. I've never heard any details about that, and why it didn't result in anything.

556 No, I'm just surprised at how bad Safeway is at delivery.

I tried out Randall's delivery several weeks ago. They're the local incarnation of Safeway. I actually received my delivery approximately at the right time. It was missing about a third of the items but I'd still been charged for them.

There was no way to let them know other than calling them. Even though it had been ordered ver a web interface, there was no interface for this was received, this was not.

Of course, by the time I got through about an hour on hold, the driver was long gone, but as it turned out they had no way of contacting him anyway so I received a refund on the missing items.

About two weeks later I received another refund for most of the remainder. No idea why, but I wasn't going to wait on hold for another hour just to force them to take my money.

IIRC the Germans also had big problems with their contact and magnetic torpedo exploders at the beginning of their war. Especially the highly secret Long Lance 24-inch diameter surface ship-carried torpedo.

---------------------

Won't argue with that. The problems with the new US torpedoes at the start of the war was an absolute travesty.

I did hear a story that's somewhat amusing given that, though. The newer US submarines got the new Mark XIV torpedoes, because those were the newest and best submarines, and should have the newest and best ordinance, right? So when an older submarine, the USS S-44, took a shot at the Japanese cruiser Kako, and hit her, the older Mark X torpedoes that S-44 was "stuck with" exploded properly.

Heh.

That was the biggest kill by an American submarine up until that point of the war.

There was a guy named Mumsen or similar who got famous for inventing a way for submariners to escape a sunk sub, but before that he proved to the Navy brass that the torpedoes weren't actually sploding.

They didn't believe the reports and he went and shot a bunch of cliffs at different angles and proved that it took pretty much a direct 90 degree impact to make one go boom and they then fixed things.

575 Caesar, there is some progress on the illegal migration/rule of law front, but a lot of problems, too - precisely in the area of lawlessness, this time the judiciary (surprise! our favorite old discussion topic).

"New" problems, like nation-wide injunctions (technically not all new, but as you know absolutely new in terms of scope, audaciousness, and unhesitating usurpation in areas where "deference"* historically ruled, i.e. national security). And "standing", effectively, for foreigners outside the US with no ties to the US - a real mind-blower. And I don't notice some of this stuff getting better.

Chi-Nah may not be able to wait out Trump on some key items, but the judiciary can, easily, and appears to be giving it a shot.

Best part, clear statutory language excluding jurisdiction - no longer a problem! Nice!

* a ridiculous, smug, self-serving concept - judiciary has no role in many areas, and not sticking its nose in is not "deference", it's obedience to the constitution and common sense

Trump did not accept Session's offer because a) it would have made Rosenstein acting atty gen and b) along with Comey could have been construed as obstruction of justice (Remember Nixon's Saturday Night Massacre).

Session was dirty and probably placed there by order of McConnell who is dirty too with Chamber and Chinese money plus the whole abuse of FISA warrant things. Ryan who is also most probably dirty via the same source as is the Senate oversight committee on intelligence.

The untold story is how much Trump's problems stemmed from Republicans on Capitol Hill and in his own administration trying to do him in.

Selling our country to the highest bidder has been the norm since the Clintons and it is bipartisan--in the House-it is the leadership and it is most of the Senate.

The A-gang officer on the IJN CA Tone was a critical person. His division did not get that catapult to launch until later. That missing search arc was [absolutely] critical. [Emphasis added].

590 They didn't believe the reports and he went and shot a bunch of cliffs at different angles and proved that it took pretty much a direct 90 degree impact to make one go boom and they then fixed things.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 07, 2020 09:42 PM (gd9RK)

Worse than that. Setting aside the magnetic detonators, which completely blew both moose and squirrel from 2000 yards, a textbook 90° impact imparted enough force on the impact trigger that it couldn't get out of its own way and it misfired. Bad, low-scoring, glancing hits were the ones that would get the impact trigger to fire.

Also it didn't really run at the depth it was set for.

And the gyros made it come back and hit you anyway.

591 540 Sessions made grievous errors of judgement, that's fairly clear, but life is complicated, and he'd likely be a more useful body in the Senate than the coach.

Posted by: rhomboid at July 07, 2020 09:34 PM (El6T/)

No one in the Trump Administration knew what they were up against when Sessions recused himself. Due to that I can give him a partial pass. Not a full pass because he should have voided his recusal as the bogus collusion crap attack became obvious. Rosenstein is a different situation. I still have not heard him explain exactly why he appointed a Special Counsel. IMHO he was coaxed into that step by Comey, or by McCabe acting as Comey's and the Deep State's agent.

Just thinking out loud here.

Hm. Coin shortage. Maybe a few people think the money value is suddenly a lot less than the metal value of the coins.

Hm. Uncontrolled nationwide riots. Makes people move their capital out of a country in a hurry. Makes the currency worth less.

Hm. I sound like that South Park Jeff Goldblum character. But the two ideas kinda reinforce each other.

Chinese people buying houses has driven up property values, at least on the west coast. If that's stopped or reversed, maybe houses might start to lose value.

Caesar, there is some progress on the illegal migration/rule of law
front, but a lot of problems, too - precisely in the area of
lawlessness, this time the judiciary (surprise! our favorite old
discussion topic).

"New" problems, like nation-wide injunctions (technically not all
new, but as you know absolutely new in terms of scope, audaciousness,
and unhesitating usurpation in areas where "deference"* historically
ruled, i.e. national security). And "standing", effectively, for
foreigners outside the US with no ties to the US - a real mind-blower.
And I don't notice some of this stuff getting better.

Chi-Nah may not be able to wait out Trump on some key items, but the judiciary can, easily, and appears to be giving it a shot.

Best part, clear statutory language excluding jurisdiction - no longer a problem! Nice!

* a ridiculous, smug, self-serving concept - judiciary has no role
in many areas, and not sticking its nose in is not "deference", it's
obedience to the constitution and common sense

Posted by: rhomboid at July 07, 2020 09:43 PM (El6T/)

All true, but working the cases through the courts takes time. There would be no nationwide injunctions if there weren't something to enjoin. The state AG's, which were the opposition to Obama's DOJ, had a very checkered record in opposing it; for example, they blew DACA, which should have been the easiest case in the world, and only Judge Hanen in Brownsville and the Fifth Circuit saved them on expended DACA (DAPA). The DOJ is playing offense now, and winning some cases -- like recently with being able to reject bogus asylum claims without a judicial hearing and hold illegal aliens outside the US, so they never enter the US and never get rights. The situation is a lot better today than it was 3-1/2 years ago.

653 If President Trump had fired Sessions then, that would have been called Obstruction. Was Sessions baiting him?

Sessions: Evil or just dangerously incompetent?

654 Sorry Jackstraw,
I admire your analysis in most issues but the root of the matter is the Swamp of which Jeff Session was a proud member of. For example, one such example is a misuse of our intelligence intercepts via the Senate Cmte on Intelligence and you know who never said a damn word about those creeps Republican and Democrat on the cmte--well it is Honorable Jeff Sessions and curiously enough his chief of staff just was recently forced out from the DOJ who was at the recusal meeting.

The corruption from Session does not come from money contributions but his covering for Republican House and Senate leadership knee deep in the Gang of 8 misdeeds regarding illegal intercepts of American citizens, spying on journalists and Senators, illegal arms trading via the Turkey to Syria using Libyan arms to Al Queda affiliates, etc. The NRO building a whole new hq without any congressional appropriations from their black budget and so on and so on. Some folks are corruptible with money, others are corruptible with power, and some just are weak enough to go along with evil when they should confront it.

Session was in good standing with McConnell and and a wise poker player which McConnell certainly is--hedges his bets. A senator coming from Alabama faced no paybacks for Trump support from his voters and it was really not a profile in courage to back him as a long term member of the Senate club in good standing. Sessions was not going to miss a darn thing by supporting Trump if Trump did not succeed.

No problem. I disagree with you completely on this and also Rosenstein. Kind of interesting that Graham got to his interview and then stopped.

But we'll see soon enough.

And this is why, though recused from election/russia issues he could not seem to find time to investigate obvious publicly known issues revolving around the same cabal.
