The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The officers’ actions in these photos are appalling and inexcusable and will not be tolerated by the Interim Chief or by me,” Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman

Quote II

“Mount Rushmore is a symbol of white supremacy, of structural racism that’s still alive and well in society today,” Nick Tilsen, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and president of a local activist organization called NDN Collective,

Quote III

DiAngelo isn’t the first person to make a buck pushing tricked-up pseudo-intellectual horseshit as corporate wisdom, but she might be the first to do it selling Hitlerian race theory. White Fragility has a simple message: there is no such thing as a universal human experience, and we are defined not by our individual personalities or moral choices, but only by our racial category.Matt Taibbi

Quote IV

“They’re making money now, plotting to give seven billion, five-hundred million people a vaccination. Dr. Fauci, Bill Gates and Melinda — you want to depopulate the Earth. What the hell gave you that right? Who are you to sit down with your billion to talk about who can live, and who should die?

… I say to my brothers and sisters in Africa, if they come up with a vaccine, be careful. Don’t let them vaccinate you with their history of treachery through vaccines, through medication.” The Honorable Minister Farrakhan

Quote V

The left has been laying the groundwork for this anarchist takeover for a long time. But even they must be amazed that the conservative response was to roll over and play dead. Except maybe they’re not playing. Ann Coulter

Quote VI

We celebrate the 4th of July and not April 15th because, in America, we celebrate our independence from the government and not our dependence on it. Former WI Gov. Scott Walker

If I didn't know any better, I would have guessed that this would have been a government FUBAR operation. Guess not.

After a second-stage failure, Rocket Lab loses seven satellites
“The In-Space team is absolutely gutted by this news.”

On Sunday morning, local time in New Zealand, Rocket Lab launched its 13th mission. The booster's first stage performed normally, but just as the second stage neared an altitude of 200km, something went wrong and the vehicle was lost.

In the immediate aftermath of the failure, the company did not provide any additional information about the problem that occurred with the second stage.

"We lost the flight late into the mission," said Peter Beck, the company's founder and chief executive, on Twitter. "I am incredibly sorry that we failed to deliver our customers satellites today. Rest assured we will find the issue, correct it and be back on the pad soon."

Rest assured? Dude!

Not all black lives matter. Innocent blacks need not apply.

Why is this not the biggest story in the country?

Via WSB:

ATLANTA — An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed Saturday night in Atlanta near the Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks died last month.

Police identified the child Sunday as Secoriea Turner.

Officers said they responded to a shooting call near University Avenue and I-75/I-85 around 9:50 p.m. The location of the shooting was in a parking lot across the street from the now burned-out Wendy’s, which has been occupied by demonstrators since Brooks’ death.

Then there is "The Windy City". So named because of the bullets flying.

Breaking news; A three-year-old girl was shot and killed.

Breaking news: A seven-year-old girl was shot and killed.

You're going to "take" Texas? Bless your heart.

Earlier, reports noted that the group identifies as NFAC — literally standing for “Not F*cking Around Coalition” — and its leader calls himself Grand Master Jay.

Videos showed the leader discussing the group’s demands, which include a black ethnostate within the U.S.

“The solution is very simple,” he responded. “We file a declaration of liberation, declaring every African-American descendant of slavery a political prisoner here in the United States, that was affected by the Portuguese slave trade, and after that, the United States then has a choice, either carve us a piece of land out here — we’ll take Texas — and let us do our own thing, or don’t stop us when we exit this body here and go somewhere where they will give us our own land to build our own nation.

There are still red-blooded Americans in Los Angeles. Not every guy wears a man bun and is powered by soy milk.

o fireworks on Independence Day, said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. To hell with that, said the people.

Ignoring the mayor’s order and a lack of traditional municipal displays, Los Angeles residents set off their own celebration, lighting up Southern California skies with their own fireworks.

Fireworks are illegal in the city of Los Angeles and all firework displays were banned in L.A. County this year. But explosions and roman candles have been going off for weeks, culminating in a massive display on Saturday night.

Police claimed more than 1,000 fireworks complaints came in to various branches, and they tried to respond. But the task was akin to shoveling the ocean with a spoon, and while not every citizen was happy – particularly those with nervous pets – the city was ablaze with lights and sounds for many hours on Saturday night

NFL To Play "BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM" Before National Anthem

You too can be a Karen at an NFL game in 2020.

packersunnamed.jpg

It would have been nice to know this before I shelled out a shitton of cash.

Oh Ron Rivera, man of integrity. If the name was so offensive, why did you want to be hired by such a racist business. Fucking virtue signaler.

Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera said work is underway to rename the NFL franchise, and revealed his hopes for the club to unveil its new name before the NFL season's mid-September start.
It was announced on Friday that the team was conducting a "thorough review" of the team's name, and a host of outlets have suggested that a name change could be implemented before Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season, when Washington will take on the Philadelphia Eagles on September 13.

Coach Rivera shares that optimism, and told the Washington Post that he would love for things to be finalized and made public in time for the start of the season.

"If we get it done in time for the season, it would be awesome," Rivera said.

Why should we watch the NFL or shop at any of its sponsors?

Romeo & Juliet meet Opiods.

Bennett Rhodes was scrolling through Instagram early last year when he came across a young woman named Andi Galland. Twenty years old, she posed on beaches and at music festivals; she displayed an impressive command of yoga. To Bennett she epitomized the perfect bikini-clad California girl.

From his Hollywood apartment, Bennett slid into her DMs. To his delight she quickly hit him back. She liked what she saw as well: Only 18, he was a good-looking if unlikely white trap rapper with a burgeoning Instagram following. They got to chatting. Despite his hardcore raps he came from a well-to-do family in San Diego—and so did she, it turned out. She still lived there. Bennett put his cards on the table.

“I’ll bet you won’t come up and see me in Hollywood,” he said.

“I’ll bet I will,” she replied.

Bennett didn’t believe her until she arrived on his doorstep that same day. He was immediately charmed. She was funny, kind and down to do absolutely anything. She, likewise, was won over by his energy and charisma. He carried himself like the star he wanted to be.

Andi stayed with Bennett the entire weekend, joining him and his friends at parties and restaurants. She’d brought Xanax pills with her, and the pair indulged, helping fuel an immediate infatuation. “It became recurring; she ended up visiting us for weeks at a time,” says Bennett’s then-roommate, Daniel “Gibby” Gibb.

Poor Tammy. She can't understand normal thinking.

Dem Senator Tammy Duckworth says we should consider tearing down George Washington statues

She says we should listen to that argument and then runs off talking about how Mount Rushmore is a racist monument. It drives me crazy that she acts as if these monument-topplers are rational agents even offering arguments for what they do. They don’t. They just stupidly and blindly attack ANY statue whether it makes sense or not.

I recall a certain POTUS being laughed at when he suggested the Founding Father statues would be next.

The anarchists are so rabid and fucking stupid they don't know who Frederick Douglass was.

A sad commentary on the parents of these feral pieces of shit. What a wonderful education they received in gubmint schools.

As we know the world is screwed up. It's perfectly acceptable to accept a transgender. But it is not to accept the fact that mankind is a social creature.

Drunk people are unable to properly socially distance, the chairman of the Police Federation has said as pubs reopened in England for the first time since lockdown.

John Apter said it was “crystal clear” revellers would not adhere to the one metre plus rule as restrictions were eased on Saturday.

Prof Chris Whitty said the pandemic “is a long way from gone” and urged the public to follow social-distancing rules as pubs and restaurants reopened.

But images from London’s Soho showed packed streets into the early hours of Sunday.

Apter, who was on shift in Southampton where he dealt with “naked men, happy drunks, angry drunks, fights and more angry drunks”, said: “What was crystal clear is that drunk people can’t/won’t socially distance.

What a small petty life........Not only does The Rick Wilson suck, he also swallows.

Te Lincoln Project objected to the President of the United States, and the nation’s commander-in-chief, for saluting during his July 4th celebration from Mt. Rushmore.

Civilians don’t salute. pic.twitter.com/W0LL3C46yn

— The Lincoln Project (@ProjectLincoln) July 4, 2020

The jab at the president was one of many by the political action committee formed by Republicans – and some former Republicans – for the express purpose of preventing Trump’s reelection. The group has launched several ads aimed at attacking the president in the 2020 race, including one with Russian language and English subtitles in a mock “endorsement” from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Former Republican political strategist Rick Wilson and GOP campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, who co-founded The Lincoln Project along with George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, spewed a barrage of insults at the president and his supporters.

Residing in Florida continues to be a challenge. Swimming with the amoeba can be life threatening.

One person in Hillsborough County has been infected with a potentially lethal amoeba that can cause brain tissue damage, according to a Hillsborough County Health Department release on Friday.

The Naegleria fowleri is sometimes referred to as a “brain-eating amoeba.” The “microscopic single-celled living amoeba” is usually found in ponds, rivers, lakes and other warm freshwater environments. It can lead to primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare infection that can result in destruction of brain tissue and is often fatal.

The Health Department news release did not disclose the water body involved, the identity of the person infected or their condition.

OK, I understand HIPAA laws. But not disclosing the body of water involved is wrong. Why does this agency even exist? (Rhetorical in nature, of course)

Georgia Tech, Please tell us.

Exactly why you are needed.

The majority of Georgia Tech professors, including some the university’s most acclaimed faculty members, have launched a revolt over reopening this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying the current plan “threatens the health, well-being and education of students, staff, and faculty.”

More than 700 of Tech’s 1,100 faculty members outlined their concerns to the Georgia Board of Regents in a letter titled “Statement of Academic Faculty of Georgia Tech on the COVID-19 Crisis and Fall 2020 Semester.”

“We are alarmed to see the Board of Regents and the University System of Georgia mandating procedures that do not follow science-based evidence, increase the health risks to faculty, students, and staff, and interfere with nimble decision-making necessary to prepare and respond to COVID-19 infection risk,” the professors wrote.

The letter, dated July 2, was shared with GPB News and can be read in full here

Johnny Cash made his last ever live performance when he appeared at the Carter Ranch. Before singing "Ring of Fire", Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written shortly before taking the stage: “The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.” Cash died on Sept 12th of this year. via thisdayinmusic.com

Those of us who go out to eat for whatever reason have been disappointed. I know I have. But there comes a time when you walk away to battle another time. Unless you are tonight's Genius Award Winner.

An Arkansas man shot out the front window of a Little Rock pizzeria after arguing with an employee about a purported paucity of toppings on a pie he ordered, police allege.

Michael Brown, 44, was arrested on multiple felony charges following a violent confrontation Monday afternoon at the Pie Five restaurant.

According to a Little Rock Police Department report, after Brown and a female acquaintance placed an order, Brown “became upset about the portion size of the order.” Specifically, Brown thought he was shorted on his pizza’s toppings (a further description of which is not contained in court records).

When Brown asked to speak with a manager, worker Eboni Smith called her supervisor and handed the phone to Brown (seen above). Brown subsequently “threw the phone at Ms. Smith striking her on the side of the face.” After another Pie Five employee asked Brown to leave, he “began arguing and went outside.”

Brown retreated to his work van and “walked back to the business holding a gun.” Brown was unable to enter the pizzeria since a worker had locked the front door. Unable to gain entry, Brown “shot out the glass to the front door,” cops charge.

Most of the news coming out of Afghanistan is disheartening. Not tonight. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Shinwari, 42, worked as an interpreter with the US military for eight years in some of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan.

Knowing he was risking his life and endangering his family, he managed to save the lives of five American soldiers, including one who helped bring Shinwari and his family to the US.

As an interpreter, Shinwari wasn't supposed to fight when he joined the US military.

But during one particularly ambush in 2008, Shinwari saved the life of Capt. Matt Zeller, an American soldier he had only met 10 days earlier.

"I saw Matt Zeller, that he was alive in a ditch and there were two Taliban behind him to kill him," Shinwari told NPR. "I shot the two Taliban and I saved Matt Zeller's life."

Zeller recalled Shinwari standing above him and saying, "I'm Janis. And I'm one of your translators. You're not safe."

When we got settled, Helm was not out, just his band, and they played a couple of tunes. She looked at me and said "is this really worth seeing?" I said "just wait."

It was truly great. He played "The Weight." He played "Up on Cripple Creek." He had opened with "Ophelia," and after the uproar at the end, came back out and said that he hadn't rehearsed any more songs with this band, but he'd play "Ophelia" again. We approved, strongly.

"This year is the last time we have, if we are not to see a carbon rebound," said Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency.

119 Here's something funny.

Formula 1 opened back up today with the Austrian Grand Prix, some of which I watched this morning. (No, it's not something I'm generally into, but I watched the Netflix documentary not too long ago, so I was interested.)

Anyhow, there was an incident before the race started when some of the drivers took a knee in honor of "the fight against racism," but not all of them. One who did, Lewis Hamilton, tweeted that those who refused to kneel were "complicit" in racism, because of course.

The race got underway, and Hamilton had a pretty good chance of winning, but he got penalized five seconds for forcing another driver off the road and therefore just barely missed "making the podium" (finishing in the top 3).

Best part? The guy he forced off could theoretically be classed as a person of color himself--mother is Thai, I think.

The Almighty does indeed have a sense of humor.

169 On the topic of opioids, coronavirus and government hypocrisy, I penned this letter to our local paper.

It won't be printed. They hate me.

Each year for the last decade, an average of 1500 Tennessee residents, most under the age of 40, have died from opioid overdose.

This year, most estimates expect that number to rise to around 3000, from a combination of stimulus money, unemployment bonuses and a lack of anything to do with free time.

By comparison, so far slightly less than 600 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus. If that number were to double, it still would not reach even a down year for opioid deaths.

So why, then, are we closing bars, wedding chapels, churches, schools, ball games, denying people the ability to attend a funeral or graduation, to get a hair cut, to eat at a restaurant, to listen to a band at the lake?

We take all these radical measures in the preposterous notion that you can contain a microscopic microbe. We have closed businesses by force. We have threatened fines and imprisonment for those that don't wear a mask. We run about hither and yon, shoving q-tips up people's noses. We cancel elective surgeries, cancer screenings, corrective surgeries.

But for that which annually kills three times as many, what do we do?

We license pharmacies to sell the opioids. We certify doctors to prescribe them. We arrest those selling them illicitly, slap them on the wrist, and release them right back out into the streets. We offer free government insurance to pay for the OxyContin scripts. We offer tax incentives for companies selling the opioids. We provide clinics that dole out synthetic opioids. We discuss ways to legalize other drugs that start you on the path to using opioids.

Do we use cell-phone tracking data to track the movements of dope dealers? Nope.
Do we use tracking apps to observe how much people drive around to justify coronavirus lockdowns? Yep.

Do we close businesses where coronavirus spread is statistically heightened in theory? Yes.
Do we close businesses where opioid purchases are carried out in actuality? No.

We pretend we can control the spread of a microbe. We also pretend we can't control the spread of fentanyl or heroin which come from halfway around the globe.

It's a joke folks.

The politicians and medical lobbyists and media. They are all a joke. There is no goodness in them, only self-serving profiteering.

The guy that tells you to wear a mask on television, when he is finished with his guest appearance, he heads down to the office and signs 20 scripts for opioids to his patients to get that free trip to Hawaii for himself and the nurse he is screwing around on his wife with.

The media members that speak in concerned, dulcet tones, they turn a profit off of every riotous outbreak and every disease panic.

The politicians that wave away your rights on a whimsy, they sit idly by while entire generations are decimated by drug infestation, by cultural rot, by immorality. Not only do they not try to stop it, they hang a banner and encourage it.

So who will you listen to? Who's authority is the only one that has ever been worthy and wholesome?

If you are following anything other than God's authority, you are headed down the wrong path.

If you follow God and God alone, you will be at odds with your neighbors and with earthly rulers, but you will always be right.

Police said Turner was riding in a car with her mother and her mother's

tried to turn into the parking lot at 1238 Pryor Road when he was
confronted by an "group of armed individuals" who had blocked the
entrance.

Were these "individuals....BLAAAACK???"

never mind, don't answer.

"At some point, someone in that group opened fire on the vehicle,
striking it multiple times and striking the child who was inside. The
driver then drove to Atlanta Medical Center for help," police said in a
statement.

Did they pay attention to the legal requirements regarding a defensive shooting? Were they carefully considering Method, Opportunity and Intent and making sure that they "safely retreated" , while maintaining a " mantle of responsibility" and thoughtfully regarding "responsible gun ownership" when they pulled the trigger?

Police said the 911 caller told them they were heading to Atlanta
Medical Center with the victim. The child died at the hospital.

201 I think that there are enough real scientists and epidemiologists, globally, that there will be actual studies of this episode.

Which will, very likely, show, inter alia:

* consistent with historical and scientific knowledge to date, "mitigation" or containment of an infectious, prevalent respiratory virus is not practicable in most situations (as shown by the essentially similar results in countries/jurisdictions pursuing radically different approaches)

* the effects of identification and isolation of particularly vulnerable, and standard of care, when not prompt or appropriate, greatly outweigh any observable effects from "mitigation"

* as previously concluded and incorporated into standard practice and doctrine, radical mitigation efforts have negative effects, including excess deaths, completely unjustified by the undetectable benefits

212 This fireworks thing.

Not being a dumbed-down unthinking sort incapable of critical analysis, I always demand whatever's available in terms of baseline/past observed "average" before finding any significance in what may seem to be interesting events.

The helicopter, and ground, video from LA, Denver, San Francisco, etc., at first blush, seem amazing.

It's like a virtual official fireworks show, spread out across enormous areas. Prolonged. With lots, and lots, of fireworks expended.

Just a combo of people wanting to see some fireworks (with everything cancelled), and some cabin fever from months of lock-down?

Or something more/different?

That it happened in SF argues for the mundane explanation. Likewise, East LA.

What thinketh the Horde?

simpler, cost benefit analysis.

We are setting everyone lives back by a year. No school, economy in the tank. No fun. Hell, try to find a DATE right now (something I am usually very good at).

That's 325,000 Man years of waste.

Average lifespan in US? 78 years.
So, we are wasting 4,166,000 lifetimes.

Not to mention all the futures and businesses that are currently being destroyed.

Gifted College athlete? Screwed. STEM Degree? Yer hosed, lost a year at least, maybe 2.

241 Romeo, my version actually was already simpler.

There is no observable "benefit" from mitigation. That will probably be the conclusion from any honest analysis.

So the "cost/benefit" is infinite.

And actually, some actuarial types have done good analysis exactly along the lines you outlined.

But to the broader public that can rub two neurons together (a sub-set, I know), just the % of total excess deaths since March attributable to "mitigation" vs. C19 will probably be the door-slammer. Preliminary takes by very good statisticians relying on what they have is that this category may be 30% of the total.

BTW, we need to get a Pierce County microMoMe together soon. There are at least a few of us in the greater South Sound area.

And we'd better hurry, because the local birdpoop cageliner, Tacoma News Tribune, went all SjW-ery a few weeks ago on everyone and wants to change the name.

Because Franklin Pierce, the President at the time the county was created, has just found out in the last few weeks to be "racist", and now apparently must be erased, or disappeared, or whatever they do to the memory of Presidents from almost two centuries ago.

A Spokane paper commenting on the Tacoma paper editorial:

https://tinyurl.com/ybvplk4g

..... The Tacoma News Tribune last week raised questions about the namesake of its home county, Franklin Pierce, the 14th president.

Naming a county after a president or other prominent figure was a pretty common occurrence in the 1800s when Washington and other states were splitting up land for ease of government. After all, the new counties needed to be called something to differentiate them from their neighbors, and Washington's founders seemed to have two choices; political figures whose good graces might be useful in procuring statehood or difficult to pronounce and spell Native American names that would instantly reveal if someone "ain't from around here."

Spokane obviously opted for the latter............

....... Grant, Lincoln, Adams and Franklin are pretty safe namesakes, even by 2020 standards. It's an open question whether those standards would have allowed the state's founders to name it after the first president.

Changing a county's name would be more difficult than moving some portraits or relocating some statues, and probably more than renaming military bases because of all the signage, stationery and maps.

But if Pierce County decides to take the News Tribune's editorial to heart, there is another option if they don't mind taking a page from their neighbor to the north. King County was originally named for William Rufus King, who was Pierce's vice president. He was also a slave owner and a prominent defender of it while in Congress.

In 1986, King County residents decided they wanted a change, so they renamed the county for Martin Luther King, Jr., which allowed them to remove the ignominy without changing all the signs. (It's possible W.R. King could have found proponents to remain the namesake under 2020 sensibilities as the first gay lover of a president, but that's a different debate.)

Pierce could opt for a similar strategy by choosing as its new namesake Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, the wise-cracking, establishment ignoring doctor in "M-A-S-H." Then they'd just have to choose whether to invite Donald Sutherland or Alan Alda to the renaming ceremony.

Say what?

In honor of this week's (somewhat) historical theme we offer Gov. Jay Inslee's opening to Wednesday's press conference:

"You may fire when ready, Gridley" which may have puzzled some viewers tuning in on TVW.

He was quoting, pretty closely, Commodore George Dewey's instructions to Capt. Charles Gridley, the commander of his flagship, at the start of the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898, which led to the destruction of the Spanish fleet.

Bit of state trivia: that ship was the U.S.S. Olympia.

It was a decade ago now, but Little LCD and I went to a Packers game when they played the then Holmgren-led Seahawks in a late-season game. Gift from the then in-laws. 4+ hour drive in 15 degree weather. Totally worth it.

Hawks got crushed out of the gate, but the hospitality of the Packers fans was something every visiting American football fan should experience at least once in their lives.

Outstanding experience.

I won't go into how I know this, but.

Psychopaths learn due to enlightened self interest.

They either must actually be interested in the subject, OR they must understand the benefit of learning said subject.

And it a benefit that must be to THEM, initially.

If they are interested in computers? Talk about how the history of how logic came about. Then the Math behind programing and how it impacts everything.

If they are interested in online games? There's a WHOLE bunch of math back there. As well as world building, which brings in history. And English because having the ability to communicate is important beyond the base levels of gaming.

Sadly, sitting in a classroom with people of lesser intelligence, learning the same damn shit you did years before? Is the worst thing you can do to a Psychopath.

Not here, by the grace of God. The teachers at Pookette's school worked hard and the principal did his best to prevent "academic slide." We had a ton of resources to use, and not just online. Pookette even got a report card for the quarter she was at home. Teachers' aides, who had been laid off, were constantly asking parents if they needed help or special tutoring. The school is opening its semi-remedial/back-to-school class that usually takes place the two weeks before school starts to all students.

Apropos of nothing, I just had a memory from about a year and a half ago.

My girlfriend found a bun in her oven. She wasn't on my insurance, and she scheduled the ultrasound - at Planned Parenthood. I expressed my extreme displeasure at using the services of this peculiar institution with my hard-earned money, but acquiesced nonetheless.

Of course, they only do non-murders at the main branch in each city, in order to keep their federal funding. And the main branches are where people do their protests about all the wanton murdering. So I got to be shamed by this guy on the way in, which I ignored.

The abattoir was too creepy, so I stepped out for a smoke, and the guy started yelling at me again. This time, I came over and told him that I'm on his side, filicide isn't my thing, etc, I'm just here for the ultrasound.

He was genuinely surprised - nobody goes there for the ultrasound. I bet they had to dust off the equipment first.

It's a recurring theme. Chokwe Lumumba (he has a wiki page) was declared 2nd vice president of The Republic Of New Afrika in the 70s; their declared capitol was Hinds County MS, Jackson MS being the biggest city in that county.

Fast forward to 2013, when he was actually elected as mayor of Jackson. He declared he wanted to secede from the US. In 2014, he died in office.

Transmission the same vectors as Polio. The US Navy runs on High School educated kids, who are somehow trained to both use and fix the most complex Machinery and Electronics on earth.

The Guys with degrees? Officers? Have NOTHING to do with the technical work. And nothing to do with Training.

Yet, it works. WHY? Objective based courses.

We started with what did we want these guys to be able to do. Then what steps do they need to know to do it. THEN MADE THEM DO IT.

Ran a 'C' school technical course. 6 month long advanced education on Satellite Communications.

Final test was not written. We put actual faults in the gear, and you had to find it, and fix it. Your score was based on the average time it took someone to find that fault (based on actual student data).

ie, if you could not turn a damn screwdriver, no matter how book smart you were, you would not pass.

He actually tried to do a respectable and honest comparison of things hard to compare.

But it was pretty clear.

I read a couple of bits in the last few days, saying that Covid has dropped being deadly so fast, it is struggling to meet the numbers that the CDC requires to be defined "a pandemic."

Even with all the fake-loaded numbers some add, like the guy who was shot by a gun and killed, but tested for Covid and so, "Covid related death."

Or the 87 year old on a half dozen medications, a 65 year chain smoker and with diabetes, dying of Covid.

Even with these funky numbers added to the total, Covid death numbers are falling quickly as a percent of the total.

Stay tuned to this, it is a real number that cannot be ignored. It can, however, be censored by Progda outlets.

437 Not sure, but I think fecal origin of transmission for a viral respiratory illness would be unusual.

And fomite transmission (which this would be, from surfaces) has, AFAIK, been a loser in terms of current research, starting with an early and fairly good study from a small town in Germany (whole household infected, research unable to find infective quantity/quality of RNA on surfaces in the house).

In any case, it doesn't change the basics:

* masks not shown to have significant benefit in prevention of transmitting viral respiratory illness

* prevalent infectious viruses are not amenable to containment or mitigation, costs thereof likely to exceed benefits

467 Zettai, check out EthicalSkeptic on the twatters, he's a statistician/operations research/whatever sort of hard data guy. Brain-breaking, but very interesting.

"Cases" are so, so, so fuzzed up and compromised in the case of C19, there may be no analogue or precedent.

First, even the definition (which has also changed, mid-course! total chaos). Not aware of a tracked infectious disease that is counted as a "case" *in the absence of symptoms*. Of course with familiar bugs, only symptomatic/presenting to hospitals etc are tested and logged. But still!

Next, an illustrative example. A guy suffered an injury while biking, was admitted to a hospital. Tested positive (asymptomatic, of course). "Contact tracing" (also not part of the response to an already prevalent virus, but hey, why read our own handbooks and science, right??) revealed his wife and two kids, also positive (also asymptomatic).

Score: 4 positive cases, one hospitalization.

Reality: C19 completely irrelevant, no effect on anyone concerned.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

My late Old Man, was a Nuke Rated (bubblehead) ICC tech, starting with the 2nd generation of the Fast Attack Fleet, being a Plankholder on the USS Scamp.

Retired E-7 from the USS John Quincy Adams, briefly owned an already-failing TV repair shop in Orlando, FL at the onset of the Solid State age.

Went on to work at a tiny local company called Orlando Laser. Which grew and was bought out and became Litton Laser Systems.

Remember the 1st Gulf War? All those precision munitions punching through windows, chimneys and selected vents and doors?

Didn't matter of it was Raytheon, Martin Marietta, General Dynamics or etc.

Just over 80% of those laser generator guns came off of my Dad's test-bench.

He retired from Litton as the Senior Prototype Test Engineer.

That's your Navy Education for what once was a High School Dropout. Yeah, after his 1st hitch as a Baker's Helper on the Valley Forge, he went back to South Carolina, got his GED and re-enlisted into the Navy.

Got into Submarine School, (fleet class diesel/electrics), earned his Dolphins, and never looked back.

I can't here specify, but if you read the book "Blind Man's Bluff" by Sontag, you'll brush up against one bit of his career.

Posted by: Tom Servo at July 06, 2020 01:16 AM (V2Yro)

472 Had a strange little "fire" happen here today. I was tearing down an old flathead six engine, and was nearly done; had to remove some pipe plugs from the oil galleys. They were in real tight, and wrenching them just rounded them off. So I hammered nuts down over the square shanks of the plugs, and welded them in place with the stick welder. Easy-peasy. Wrench on the bigger nut, and the still-hot plugs back right out.

Well, sparks from the welder set some fires. One was a piece of paper towel. I scooped it up and dunked it in water. Problem solved. I was working outdoors on a heavy metal bench, so no real chance of a fire getting away existed.

But what else got burning was rust. Clumps of fluffy red-brown rust in the valve chambers, soaked with PB blaster, began smoking, and smoked for a long time, 20 minutes or so. And it just slowly spread, as I went ahead, and removed other pipe plugs and core plugs. At one point, I turned the block over, and the smoldering material fell out onto a wooden board, and continued to smolder, and scorched that.

I was quite intrigued, and poked at the little heap with a putty knife, and on the inside, the pile was dark black. It looked like I had a sort of half-assed thermite reaction going on, with red iron oxide being partially reduced to black iron oxide by the petroleum solvents and whatever in the PB Blaster.

There was no flame at all.

Well, it might be. There was a lot of fluffy, powdery rust inside this engine, in the crankcase, and in the valve chambers. Mostly from the oil pan, and the oil pump pickup. And it was all rust-brown, no black in it until the fire. And by the time it had burned out, it was dry, dusty, and black.

I have a jar of Fe2O3. Should mix it with a little PB Blaster, and see if I can duplicate the reaction.

One method is transfusion, it seemed more like recycling, after the blood left the body it was infused with oxygen then reintroduced.

There's got to be a better way.

487 But all of those various Oxides are of themselves, near enough to a metallic charcoal. Add an accelerant like PB Blaster or Kroil, and a heat source such as your torch?

Get a bigger pile, next time. And take pictures. But don't cook your steak on a grill over that muck, unless you like your filet to taste of steel, rust and shame.

No torch. The heat source was some small sparks from arc welding. I would have expected solvent-soaked rust to just burn like a candle, with the powdered rust acting as the wick, but there was no flame, just a bit of smoke.

Compare DB-C's flying hours to the average Private Pilot, who is lucky to log near to two hundred hours per year. And that's when they're trying mightily to pile-on time in order to qualify for their IFR or even their Commercial.

And it's only when a Private Pilot earns an IFR, *and* Commercial rating, that they can even begin to earn the first dime back against what they've spent thus far to qualify for those ratings.

Most then also pick up their Commercial Flight Instructor ticket, so that they can make money by teaching the newbies coming on behind them in the ranks.

What DB Cooper is doing, is pretty much what a Close Support Combat Pilot does at war, but instead of being shot at by munitions, he's dodging towering columns of flame and fire-tornadoes, updrafts, downdrafts and sudden, deadly tailwinds.

All of which give no warning or signal on the instruments.

Oh, and a quarter mile behind him? Yeah, that's the multi-engine fire suppressant tanker, following his light twin in to make the actual water drop on the fires below.

574 hours in three weeks.

That's more flying than sleeping, methinks.

And the bastard still manages to shoot three inch groups at +1,100 yards with a scoped rifle.

I think if he flew a guns-ready fighter plane, that much Antifa would instantly convert to Afterfa.

"Sticky keys" is a Windows feature that, when activated, allows you to press a modifier key, like caps, or ctrl, or alt, and have that key remain active until the following letter key is pressed. So instead of pressing "Shift+r" to make "R", I can press, "Shift, r". Useful for one-finger typing.

There is also a feature that, if you hold a key down long enough, it starts repeating rapidly.

506 All the education talk on this ONT got me thinking about a conversation I had with a friend during a post-range gun cleaning session a while ago. We want to start our own institution, call it "Allegheny Practical University" or something like that, and do college the right way. Basic curriculum for ALL incoming students would be American History, World History, American Lit, World Lit, Arts and Humanities, Basic Logic, Basic Economics, Practical Math, and Practical Writing. That would take about three semesters, and would ensure that all remaining students would be at least baseline human.
From that point, it would be a tracked curriculum, where you'd get one of three degrees: Trades, Sciences, or Arts Humanities. If you want to be a welder, your Trades advisor would track you into welding-related classes. If you want to be a biologist, your Sciences advisor would track you into biology-related classes. If you want to be an orchestral violinist, your AM advisor would track you into music and performance classes.

That's it, nothing else. No overly specific majors, and no idiots going into the world with a degree in Intersectional Gonad Poetry or any of that bullshit. You decide what you want to be and what you can make a living at, and your advisor will either track you to that path, or will tell you that your idea is stupid and then advise you into something more realistic. You leave with a degree in Trades, Sciences or AM, training for a career, and the baseline skills to be a functional adult.
I think it has potential.

The installed light can only be reached by standing on the porch rail so you have to do that to change the light bulbs. Since I can no longer climb up on the rails to change the light bulbs I bought a new fixture and an ext cord end piece to connect the three wires coming out of the fixture which I will mount on one of the porch roof support posts. But I put the ext cord connector down somewhere in the house and the house ate it.

From TGP.

*BAM!*

The important points:
"For people younger than 45, the infection fatality rate is almost 0%.
For 45 to 70, it is probably about 0.05%-0.3%.
For those above 70, it escalates substantially."

"A very crude estimate might suggest that about 150-300 million or more people have already been infected around the world, far more than the 10 million documented cases."

It's less deadly to people under 70 than the flu. And we are getting a lot closer to heard immunity than the Fauci/Pharma/Progda Brigade will admit.

Stanford University's disease prevention chairman slammed using statewide lockdown measures as a response to the coronavirus, saying they were implemented based on bad data and inaccurate modeling.

"There are already more than 50 studies that have presented results on how many people in different countries and locations have developed antibodies to the virus," Dr. John Ioannidis said during a recent interview with Greek Reporter. "Of course, none of these studies are perfect, but cumulatively, they provide useful composite evidence. A very crude estimate might suggest that about 150-300 million or more people have already been infected around the world, far more than the 10 million documented cases."

Ioannidis pointed out the mortality rate is low among young people who have contracted the virus.

"The death rate in a given country depends a lot on the age structure, who are the people infected, and how they are managed," Ioannidis said. "For people younger than 45, the infection fatality rate is almost 0%. For 45 to 70, it is probably about 0.05%-0.3%. For those above 70, it escalates substantially."

553 Lance Keisha Bottoms (that sounds like a soldier ("Bottoms") with the rank of "lance keisha", but YMMV) must be really worried if she referring to "eight year old babies". Seriously? An 8 year old is not a baby. An 8 year old is someone who can answer the question "what do you want to be when you're all grown up", even if the answer is "Idono" (however you pronounce it). I have no idea what the circumstances were, though I can't imagine any justification for it, but you wouldn't be pushing tearjerking, emotional desperation unless you really had to. You don't willingly sound that dumb unless you're not confident that this thing's not going to get out of control. That's not to mean she's afraid Hotlanta, Georgia won't be ready to rock and roll -- it's Atlanta; if it needs muscle, there's muscle. She knows she can't abandon the city. It's her Stalingrad and her opponents are primarily Ukrainians, who like to bust shit up (especially Jews), but they couldn't even hold flanks at Stalingrad, let alone take that city. Nyet, comrade, LK Bottoms is "oh, shit"ing that she's going to have to make some tough decisions that she is freaked out about having to make. She doesn't want to have to authorize deadly force (with blanket immunity or her cops will balk) and she never thought it would get this far. SJGR, you know?

The idea of almost 200 Flight hours logged in one week is crazy, let alone doing it for 3 weeks.

You might want to check your arithmetic.

Well, I like it. Have read Janissary thrice over the years. But I like other's authors works on that theme better.

Chris Anvil is the first one that pops to mind.

Pournelle did his CoDominion series better, with Mercenary's first story being the very best. Plus his Earth orbit ones, with Birth of Fire in the series, are very good.

IMHO.

On 02 July 1776, The Second Continental Congress passed The Declaration Of Independence.

As John Adams wrote the next day to his wife Abigail:

My Dearest Friend,

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.

It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.

You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth all the means. And that posterity will triumph in that day's transaction, even although we should rue it, which I trust in God we shall not.

- John Adams, Letter to Abigail Adams, 03 July 1776

[Of course, we celebrate the Fourth of July, instead of the Second. It's not that Mr. Adams got it wrong because The Declaration was passed on 02 July, but the adoption of it did not become official until 04 July.]

No, that's probably just a tiny bit of transmissions. Large groups likely aren't catching it because they're not closing the lid before they flush. Heck, nursing home patients likely aren't using a physical toilet.

No, the problem is that we would be forced to think ever so slightly about how racist it is for folks to not be nasty as (literal) sh*t and to wash their hands after they use the bathroom and before touching everything around them.

We'll just keep pretending it will enter by breathing as you're walking alone on a trail in a state park.

So that Obama-appointed Judge, Amy Berman Jackson, is forcing Roger Stone to report to prison by July 14.

The trial and judge were as corrupt as anything I've seen in my life. The jury foreman was caught trashing Trump on her Facebook and Twitter accounts. Berman allowed the case to continue anyway. I can't believe the whole thing hasn't been thrown out already. But here we are.

Trump can pardon him, but the political heat would be high.
Trump would take a hit in the Progda press, but voters forget anything in a month or two, so it shouldn't matter for November 3. Still, if the SC doesn't throw the case out, Trump needs to step up.

According to the CDC back in May:

There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water.

too bad the CDC threw away it's credibility though so we don't know.

But coronavirus actually seems pretty weak so I would guess that the actual danger in public swimming pools would be the restrooms, changing areas, food areas, etc.

Remember that big surge in cases of certain 'critical occupations' like grocery store workers because they may have the highest exposure to random people?

Surely if I look for it I will find hundreds of cases, but honestly don't recall a single one. Early (during the initial lockdown) I seen lot of carts being washed down but workers actually wearing masks was hit and miss.

Same with food service (though they were probably much ,ore accomidating when it came to masks as they are used to hair nets and gloves).

One thing both have in common - heavy industry emphasis on washing your grubby paws.

Nursing homes... maybe not so much... and a lot more poo missing the target.
