The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

Progressives have the memory of mayflies. They're all like:

Progs: OK, we're going to have a new rule that says X.

Cons: Uh, it wasn't that long ago that you said you wanted a rule that said the exact opposite.

Progs: ( *pause* )

Progs: No, we didn't.

Cons: Yes, you did. See right here: ( *proffers indisputable evidence* )

Progs: ( *pause* )

Progs: But this situation is totally different.

Cons: You just want a different rule because it's to your advantage.

Progs: ( *pause* )

Progs: You're a white supremacist.

Of course, sudden and opportunistic rule changes are just one aspect of progressives' miniscule attention span. We also get sudden and opportunistic rewrites of history like this:

So national politics was all skittles and rainbow unicorn farts before Trump. Right.

I'm old enough to remember when George Bush was called Hitler by the left

I'm old enough to remember when Dick Cheney was called Hitler by the left (well, Himmler, but that's pretty much the same thing)

I'm old enough to remember when Mitt Romney (Milquetoast Mitt!) was called Hitler by the left

I'm old enough to remember when John McCain was called Hitler by the left

I'm old enough to remember when Sarah Palin was called Hitlerby the left.

Heck, even Bob Freaking Dole was called Hitler by the left. The internet isn't turning up any clever pics or memes, but I'm old enough to remember.

And of course, I'm old enough to remember when Richard Nixon was called Hitler by the left.

(Good retrospective of this phenomenon here.)

So this looks like it's going to turn into a 2020 campaign theme for the Democrats. That is, everything was great until the divisive Trump came along and dragged us all down to hell, we can go back to the status quo ante by getting rid of Trump. And this lame tweet was in response to another lame tweet by fake conservative uber-grifter Bill Kristol, so you know the NeverTrumpers are going to be solidly behind this, too.

But the reason it's so noisy is that we finally have a leader on our side who actually fights. And part of being a good fighter is knowing exactly who and what the enemy is and not being afraid to call them out publicly. And this includes refusing to go along with the pretense that the media is just sitting there on the sidelines refereeing the game when they're actually blocking and tackling for the other side.

The point is, the howling SJW mobs didn't start with Trump. They just got a lot louder.

And when they call for peace, peace, when there is no peace, the meaning of peace is actually different for each side. For their side, it'll be the peace of victory, for us, it's the peace of servitude.

Way to go, Bill. You've gone all the way. Congratulation
Bill Kristol is deceitful tool who is on the wrong the side, but this is something even worse. This reveals, categorically, that Bill Krisol is a sissy. He has no balls. He is an intellectual and practical panty-waist.

Allow me to translate this particularly pernicious piece of nonsense:
"If you don't want the foundation of the American republic to be so outwardly, visibly and publicly destroyed, bow down to the terrorists and put them back in office. They will stop openly terrorizing you, and go back to implementing their agenda more quietly."

33 The real question for me why does the left have no logical consistency? I can't debate them without knowing how they reach their conclusions. Here's the best I can come up with: They run everything through a moral lens that is completely different than you and me. We look at a situation and try to decide who is right by looking at what they did and why. The lefties look at a decision through the Marxist lens of oppressor/oppressed. So they see a situation and decide who is right based on who they are and what group they belong to.

Their fundamental sense of right and wrong is different than ours, and not based on actions, so actions can be right or wrong based simply on who took those actions. They arrive at a conclusion based on victimology, then select the facts that may support the conclusion and ignore any evidence to the contrary, because the evidence isn't important to knowing who or what is right or wrong, only identity group affiliation matters.

Don't take her lightly - she openly represents the Deep State, and with everyone knowing that Biden will be gone not long after his inauguration, She will be the person through whom the Deep State reaches out and openly takes control of the Office of the Presidency for itself. Through that control, the Deep State will be able to cement its control over the Bureaucracy and the Judiciary, and there will never be another honestly contested election in our lifetimes.

That's the plan they have for us.

95 The Dakota access pipeline shut down is extremely bad news - it shows that any member of the Judiciary now has unquestioned power over the entire Executive Branch, and can always invent procedural grounds to exercise that power.

this is a purely political decision, based on no "facts" at all. The Judge is using a "mother may I" procedural game to hand the enviro-left a huge victory, simple because he thinks they will win in November and it will be sustained. Meanwhile, the oil producing fields in North Dakota are going to lose their markets and there will be massive job losses. But to this judge, that's a feature, not a bug.

96 The real question for me why does the left have no logical consistency?

I came to the conclusion a while ago that those who proclaim to be progressive, left, whatever, are mentally arrested in their development. Their decisions and life outlook is that of what you see in ten year olds. "Because" is the response to any question or argument, due to their inability to empathize, use logic and see things from other's viewpoints. They also often lack experience in consequences for actions, like an overprotected ten year old.

It was just a funny series of pictures headed "Bush or Chimp?" with sets of pictures of Bush and a chimp looking, well, pretty similar to be honest. I clearly remember many of us pro-Bushies (I'm sorry now) passing it around in e-mails and laughing over it.

120 Thank you, President Trump.

After a month of kabuki between rioters and the Portland police, where rioters do their best to trash downtown Portland, and the Portland cops generally allow them to do it, dozens of US Marshals, Border Patrol, and ICE agents were deployed to downtown Portland last night to protect the Federal courthouse. They routed Antifa.

The Federal courthouse in downtown Portland has been badly vandalized, and on July 4th dozens of commercial-grade fireworks were fired at the courthouse, in an effort to start a fire. Apparently the Feds decided that enough was enough.

The Portland cops practice kabuki with Antifa - they have a sound truck that announces dozens of times that people have to leave before any action is taken. Naturally, the announcements are ignored. When Portland police finally take action, they advance slowly, shoulder to shoulder, giving people plenty of time to get away.

The Federal agents don't bother with a sound truck, and their response to being attacked is to charge then rioters in a loose formation. Antifa didn't know how to deal with this.

The rioters are used to Portland police tolerating a lot of abuse before making any response. The Feds don't do that - a single glass bottle was thrown at the Feds, and their response was to immediately charge the crowd. One guy whacked at a boarded up window at the courthouse with a piece of wood (which would be ignored by the Portland cops), and several Feds sprinted over to arrest the guy.

Amazing the results you get when the laws were enforced.

I'm sure the ACLU will be in Federal court in Portland today to get a judge to order the Feds to stop their effective tactics, but it's the building that the judges work in that Antifa is trying to burn down, so we shall see.

I hate to say it, but I think you're missing the point entirely. It isn't that we have a conflict between right and wrong in terms of "I think this thing is right, and my opponent thinks this other thing is right." The conflict is not that at all. The conflict is more fundamental than that. It is around the concept itself. One side believes in right and wrong conceptually, though may disagree amongst themselves as to the particulars. The other side doesn't believe in right and wrong *at all.*

The contemporary Left and its postmodernist philosophy doesn't even acknowledge right and wrong. They pretend to, but there is no substance behind those declarations. They are entirely and exclusively concerned with power. In their academic prattle it is about "shifting dominance hierarchies" but in reality is animalistic power play. The strong dominates the weak and bends the weak to its will. They put a low of window dressing on this, but it is what it is. "Right and wrong" as a concept has no meaning. It is exclusively and entirely a bending and reworking of dominance hierarchies to place themselves at the top and get whatever they want. The concept of an absolute - or even merely anchored - "right and wrong" does not exist in their philosophy.

137 Scotus rules 7-2 the pipeline could go forward. Case closed. Right? Nope. The left gives no shits what scotus says when the ruling goes against them. They still fight and win. Meanwhile. 5-4 scotus decision in favor of the left is cemented in stone for the next 1000 years.

This frustrates me a great deal as well, and its a symptom of having 16 years of far left presidents picking extremist freak judges unopposed, with 8 years of Bush not picking very good judges.

The Supreme Court is not amused by this either, but they are powerless to do anything about it. They can mutter dark annoyance at the repeated, childish, radical abuses of power by lower courts, but have no power whatsoever to punish or stop them. All they can do is waste time negating these lunatic orders over and over.

It used to damage your chances at advancement and be an awful blight on your record as a judge to have a higher court overrule or throw out a case you ruled on. It used to be painful and regrettable to have a higher court vacate your idiot ruling.

But modern radical leftist judges consider a mark of honor, an award for their "speaking truth to power" and fighting against the Man.

178 I came to the conclusion a while ago that those who
proclaim to be progressive, left, whatever, are mentally arrested in their development.

I think its spiritual development. To be sure, they are often arrested in intellectual maturity and emotional maturity as well, but I think those are symptoms.

These are people who decided life is about themselves and what they feel, that there is no higher calling, there is no greater purpose, and there is no transcendent reality. All there is is them, and the world around them.

So what make them feel bad is defined as bad. What makes them feel smart is defined as intelligent.

And the worst possible response to someone like this is to encourage it and nurture this narcissistic, materialist attitude toward life. And that's what culture and schools have been doing to children increasingly for at least four generations now.

We've gone from "we should listen to young people" to "young people innately know the truth and what should be done, and old age and external influence ruins that. We should not teach them, we should learn from them instead."

there's a reason this one was 9 - 0; the SCOTUS had to decide this way, or else there could be total chaos every 4 years. This takes away one of the arguments for removing the electoral college.

Pure media election from there.

Therefore: Trump can only go so far by bashing Slow Demented Joe because it will all be rope-a-dope come November; continue making the election about a fundamental choice between those who love America and those who want to burn it down.

234 Glad to see Border Patrol agents in the mix. Means Trump has intel that illegals are in the antifa mix.

Or they needed more trained agents than they had US Marshals in Portland, so they pulled Border Patrol people down from the Canadian border, which is a few hours away. There were a lot of Feds in downtown Portland last night.

The other change last night was that previously the Feds were only going after people trespassing on Federal property (leaving people to fire fireworks from a distance), and last night they secured a few blocks around the Federal building.

I bet the ACLU will be arguing that the Fed agents should be restricted to Federal property, which would largely eliminate their usefulness.

I watched Hamilton last night, and it's interesting to see it in today's environment.

Hamilton was obviously an attempt to lay some claim to the founding fathers by a minority immigrant, latching onto Hamilton because of his immigrant status and stand against slavery.

There's a lot of slavish attention to Washington to the point that when Hamilton slams Jefferson for owning slaves, it's never mentioned that Washington had them either.

This cultural revolution has moved far in the last...four years.

259 Yeah Jack Ryan doesn't actually do much shooting. He's cabable enough but he's usually the guy who figures things out, not the guy out front. He'll be present when the strike happens but rarely a shooter.

SCOTUS rules unanimously that states can punish faithless electors who decide to show up for the Electoral College vote and cast their ballots against the way their states voted.

This actually bothers me. Electors have to be free to choose the way they believe the election should go or all they are is a formality. They're meant to be the last barrier to something horrendous happening in the country. Not that I trust anyone these days to have the honor, integrity, or wisdom to do so, but that was their design.

Saying "well if they vote differently than the population then they just get overruled" negates a rather large part of the reason for the electoral college.

appoint vote for the presidential candidate their citizens have

Christopher, I was wondering how this ties in with the contract among several states to give all of their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner. That was intended to hurt Trump because last time Hillary "won" the popular vote and Dems think the Den candidate will win the popular vote this time as well. 295 I liked "Edge of Tomorrow" or "Live, Die, Repeat" quite a bit. I enjoy well written Time Travel stories, probably because it takes quite a bit of skill to write one well, and it's very easy to write one that is unbelievably stupid. The writer of this one thought through all the implications nicely.

And then there are movies like the one featured on Rifftrax, "Merlin, the Return." As they noted, that movie had about 12 major scenes, which could have been played in any order at all without changing anything about it.

309 I like the revisionist history that all was puppies and rainbows before Trump and that there were no riots or looting under Obama.

The reality is that Obama started off claiming the police in Boston acted stupidly in 2009, we got the Trayvon riots in 2012, the Kimani Gray riots in 2013, the Eric Garner and Michael Brown riots in 2014, the Freddie Gray riots in 2015, the Philando Castile and Sylville Smith riots in 2016 topped off by the murder of 5 cops in Dallas.

Electing Biden won't reduce the number of riots. They'll increase exponentially under Biden. Communists need scapegoats and riots to distract the people from the failures of the Communists.

The BNSF has done booming business in oil transport, and has made Buffet significantly richer. He also has interesting cross-border deal in place to route through Canada to reduce certain costs.

I doubt he is behind it, though, at least not exclusively. Not having a pipeline is great for 'ole George, but the oil fields disappearing would be fairly bad. He doesn't need (and I suspect he doesn't care much about) money and is playing a bigger game, but I have trouble seeing even him financing the destruction of the Dakotas oil business. I think he's okay with that outcome, and will take the short-term gains, but I reckon there are other players.

That's still a huge lawsuit waiting to happen, and because the SCOTUS does not issue advisory opinions, it can not happen unless and until this actually takes place.

So what the NPV means in practice is that, if it is in place, any national election results will be contested in Court for at least 6 months, and then the next President will be chosen by the Supreme Court. Which, as soon as leftists are confident they can control the SCOTUS, will be the system they want this country to have for the rest of it's existence. Doing what the People want will be a distant memory.

Clancy was VERY good at mulitple POVs and complex plots that, in the end, click together like tumblers in a lock.

Some of that length comes from giving you time to know relatively minor characters, so their actions or inactions at the critical moment make sense.

It's not a luxury a new writer would be given, but once you're a name author, no one edits you, as you said. But Clancy at least uses his extra length to develop his characters and plot. As much as I'd like the pace stepped up, I appreciate what he's doing and try to learn from it.

It's interesting to note that the movie had to info dump for the viewer by having various characters over explain things, even to the point of having the captain of the Dallas being clueless as to why Ramius was heading into the oncoming Russian torpedo. 361 "And when they call for peace, peace, when there is no peace, the
meaning of peace is actually different for each side. For their side,
it'll be the peace of victory, for us, it's the peace of servitude."

363 >> I'm old enough to remember when Dick Cheney was called Hitler by the left (well, Himmler, but that's pretty much the same thing)

Minor data point: Himmler and Heydrich were actually more powerful than Hitler, in that they had direct control over a much larger fraction of the apparatus. Heydrich, who has been largely forgotten because nobody studies history any more, may have been the most powerful Nazi of all.

364 No. Just NO...there are so many problematic issues with those hot dogs. Sloppy Joe's are ragu, made with beef, tomatoes and spices that do not mesh with hot dog flavorings.

Please say that isn't cheese sauce? CHEESE SAUCE?! AYFKM?

No. please for the love of the frankfurter...never cheese.

Mustard and maybe some chopped onion, occasionally sauerkraut or a sliver of kosher dill...but never anything tomato based on a hot dog...or a corn dog for that matter.

365 I discovered, last night, that Joe Hill is King's son. (I was trying to get to Charlie Huston, finding out in passing that Joe Hill wasn't the author I was looking for.)

367 Their fundamental sense of right and wrong is different than ours, and not based on actions, so actions can be right or wrong based simply on who took those actions. They arrive at a conclusion based on victimology, then select the facts that may support the conclusion and ignore any evidence to the contrary, because the evidence isnt important to knowing who or what is right or wrong, only identity group affiliation matters.

There are two lefts. The old ones used to not care about logic because in the end it was about power. So they created endless Illogical inconsistencies that still haunt them to this day.

However, their followers grew up with the inconsistencies. The attempts to make them fit logically has created massive cognitive dissonance. It has basically evolved into this new woke religion, based on crazy people trying to hold multiple inconsistencies in their heads at one time. Thats not healthy, and it has led to massive mental illness.

This is the new left, and they are like mad dogs.

In that we might have to put them down. It is a fanatical, violent religion and they will not stop.

Think of them as woke terminators. You cannot reason with them. They will be relentless. And they will not stop until you (and the rest of us) are dead or imprisoned. Even conversion will not be good enough for them. Conversion means sackcloth and ashes and to the bottom of the hierarchy you go.

Actually her arse was protruding from one of the other holes and Barr whacked it. Her head popped out as a result of the inertia.

370 I first heard the Hitler comparison in '92 in NYC when Newt Gingrich was compared to Hitler. I was stunned, but even more stunned when I found out the woman who uttered it was Canadian.

As far as the Left/ Progressives having no grasp of right or wrong, truth or
falsehood ... our universities long ago stopped teaching that the human faculty of Reason should be engaged in seeking Truth. Truth (or you could call it Reality) has become passe.

The *new* highest goal of education is to "Effect Change". Really. Ask them. The whole point of education (well, besides the hallowed piece of paper that guarantees Mo' Money, Honey) is to train young people in how to Change The World. The educrats and activists glorify "change" as the solution all problems. Don't bother wasting valuable time debating and defining a problem, assessing the costs and benefits of multiple solutions, and establishing metrics to gauge results. Just Do It (to borrow a phrase).

The kids are idealists, and never stop to consider that there are always unintended consequences. The old Marxists who push this view know that changing everything willy-nilly is destabilizing to social order, but hey! that's the whole point. They carefully explain to their chargelings that any resistance to their wonderful plans for Change PROVES how depraved, indifferent, greedy, racist, --pick a pejorative-- those heartless soulless conservatives truly are.

So anyway, when we've got big swaths of society who hold vastly different First Principles -- Reality/Practicality vs the Moral Imperative to Change It All Right Now -- we're not communicating, we're all talking past each other and wondering "What the hell is your problem that you don't SEE my point of view?"
