I trained my beagle Roy to "wait" - got the idea from an animal show. I'd hold his paw in my hand, and place a treat on it, and say "wait!" His eyes would be fixed on the treat and then slide away, as if he couldn't bear to see it. Then I'd say "Help yourself!" and he would snap it up.

31 I have 'trained ' my cats to take walks with me without a leash. Unfortunately I still have to worry about drivers on my private street / alley . They will walk with me until a car comes around the corner and they take off back towards my open garage. If I can train them to hug the the line of garages until they get back then it should not be a problem. Right now they dart back and forth into the street as they look back at the car. Lucky my neighbors are used to me walking them now and slow down when they see me, knowing the kittehs are near by.

34 So update on doggeh icymi

at his last annual vet appt, vet said his eyes seem hazy - maybe go get a doggie eye dr to check

so yesterday I finally got his eyes checked and doggie eye dr said ge had beyootifool, perfectly normal eyes. Yay!

said coz he's anxious with strangers his eyes are dilated, so they probably contract more slowly when regular vet flashed his light on them

She did say that when he gets older he might get iris atrophy, which apparently is a thing for poodles

also I asked her about eye vitamins and she said the only vet-endorsed one is ocu-glow

I trained a cat to do that, and she stayed obediently at my heels, which was quite adorable. And then one day she suddenly dashed into the street to get at something across the street, and without thinking, I stepped in front of traffic to go after her. A car braked to a stop an arm's length away, and the driver deservedly cussed me out. Back to the leash.

When I would make popcorn, I would share, throwing them a (fully popped) piece here and there. Maggie would gobble it down, but if I said "Pippin" before I tossed the kernel, Maggie would always take a step back and let the cat have it.

56 We were in the uptown park this morning -- went in to see the swan and the geese that cruise on the lagoon from time to time. Coming back, we saw a woman with a small-ish woolly black-and-white dog on a lead. As he passed us, we realized he had the thickest legs and biggest feet we'd ever seen on a small dog.

Conclusion: Probably a Newfoundland pup. They do come in black-and-white; the Landseer sub-breed, I think. You don't often see a Newfoundland around here -- I can recall sighting only two, one in the early '90s and one around 2007. This is not a climate for thick woolly dogs. (Or for sane humans, but I digress.)

But by gosh, if it hit the floor, it was his.

66 Anyway, this was a rough pet week. Old doggeh needed a vet visit due to an uptick in his coughing from weak tracheal rings. No change noted on Xray, so we're attributing it to heat and humidity and advancing years. He's on tussigon, now, which is successful so far.

Granddog is holding on, and a change to his arthritis medicine has made him more wakeful and feisty. He'll be 18 at next birthday.

George the III and Napolean were both somewhat astounded that George Washington stepped down after two terms. Donald Trump quoted George the III about Washington, but Napolean said something of the same thing. "If Washington steps down as President, he is the greatest man in the world". And of course, he did.

A lot of his contemporary "founding fathers" had some jealousy of Washington's fame (prior to being First President). But we were extremely fortunate to have a man like Washington as both the General of the Continental Army and President.

It is true he did own slaves, and this troubled his conscience quite a bit. Upon his death, per his will, all his slaves were made free men, and Washington bequeathed a lot of his wealth to guarantee that they would become educated and live as free men.

Andrew Jackson, also a wealthy man who owned slaves, was very paternal towards them. He generally treated them as he treated his own family.
Edited out of history (somewhat), many of his "slaves" were quite loyal to Jackson, and were present at his bedside when he passed away. One man continued to live in his shack at the Hermitage until he passed away in the 1890's. That was his home. He collected a lot of Jacksonian memorabilia prior to the Hermitage passing out of the family hands. He shrewdly sold a lot of it back to the society that took over restoring and maintaining the Hermitage (around 1886).
Slavery was wrong, and should have been abolished at the founding, but a lot of these men were decent and humane people, and would not and did not mistreat them.

FDR was so very respected that Congress approved the Twenty-second Amendment on March 21, 1947, and submitted it to the state legislatures for ratification. That process was completed on February 27, 1951, after the amendment had been ratified by the requisite 36 of the then-48 states.

Do Not Wait or it will be too late.

Have her watch the Candace Owens /Dennis Prager video or the Candace Owens/ Larry Elder video and make sure you watch it together.

Play it on your television and invite her over for some wine and cheese with her mom.
If she squawks, you can always pull the mom guilt
"after all I've done for you, this is the least you can do for me."

Works every time.

We had to retrain her though because she started bringing the neighbors papers back when we let her out later in the morning ( back when there was no leash law and dogs roamed free) .

86 FDR was so very respected that Congress approved the Twenty-second Amendment on March 21, 1947, and submitted it to the state legislatures for ratification. That process was completed on February 27, 1951, after the amendment had been ratified by the requisite 36 of the then-48 states.

Our older dog is the same way. We got some sedatives from the Vet in a syringe to give her before the thunderstorms or fireworks hit.

Problem is once we give it to her she is out like a light and weighs 80 pounds which proved to be problematic when a tornado whizzed by our house less than 200 yards away and we could not wake her up to get to the safe room.

No way my broken a$$ back and hips were going to pick her up and carry her.

-----

One thing I discovered as part of my reading history is how different economics were in those days. One aspect that made America desirable for immigrants was that unlike Europe there was no principle of primogeniture (the passing of an estate to the oldest born son). An estate was divided equally. So a lot of 2nd and 3rd and 4th born sons had a huge opportunity.

With respect to Slavery, as distasteful as it is to our modern sensibilities, slaves were considered property. Not only that, they were very expensive. Maybe $50,000 in today's confetti money.

Now of course our modern day Leftist lunatics claim the first thing they would have done, would have been to free all their slaves. That sounds very noble.

But that isn't what they would have done. Why? For one thing, where would (or could) the newly freed slaves go? What would they do?

The next thing, the right to inherit property - including slaves - had a twist in those days. An heir to an estate inherited assets - but he also inherited the debts.

"Freeing the slaves" that one might have inherited - worth hundreds of thousands of dollars - might be a little bit more complicated than people today might think.

Leftists were the slave owners. They are still pissed off, apparently.

Purina Monkey Chow, if you can find it. Or something like it Seriously. Used in zoo and research stations.

Not very tasty, but there are compressed "survival rations", of the type used on lifeboats. Coast Guard approved, or maybe required. Cornflake bars, oatmeal bars, etc.

Fat rancidity in Granola and similar isn't a problem if the right fats are used. Canola is an example of "not the right fat." It turns to paint or varnish.

The maine coon mix who's twice her size is terrified of fireworks. He's spending his evenings hiding under the bed, and only comes low-crawling out like a puddle of spilled ink with great wide eyes embedded hours after they've stopped. He's also terrified of thunderstorms, so this is nothing new. If I stay up too late this week, I know when he's finally worked up the nerve to emerge, because I get a great furry mass welding itself to my left shin, followed by oozing up into my lap, wrapping his paws around my left arm, and purring like a badly tuned Cummins diesel engine.

Not quite.

"Her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis, was one of the wealthiest planters in Virginia. When Custis died, his widow received life rights to one-third of his property, including 84 slaves. After George and Martha Washington married in 1759, she took many of these people with her to Mount Vernon. As property of the Custis estate, they could not legally be freed or sold, and were inherited by the Custis heirs upon Martha Washington’s death."

Again, not quite.

Ownership of slaves was not always a freehold right. Washington himself could not free his own slaves, much less Martha's, who were also subject to various ownership rights and legal restrictions.

Washington's own slaves could only be freed at the death of Martha, and so it was done, with one exception.

I read a book on the CSS Shenandoah. It was the last Confederate vessel or I think entity of any kind to surrender. At some point it went from a combatant ship to a criminal enterprise ala the James Gang with probably way less intent. Anyway, in the end the ship was crewed by people from all over the world, the result of impressment. There was no slavery there from my recollection. 216 Interesting verbiage - the Selective Service sent out a draft notice, it simply said

"Greeting".

Not "Greetings". Another interesting tidbit. Swearing in meant one was officially in the Army. Some people might refuse, so the actual act of induction was when everyone was told to take one step forward. Then, if someone decided to get cute and refuse to raise their right hand, they were disobeying a direct order from an officer or non-com etc etc. So I've read anyhoo. I vaguely recall being asked to take a step before swearing in.

229 I'm here.
Nice thing about the weekend is that everything kind of slows down so I was able to get caught up.
Happy 4th to all of you. I'm by myself so feeling a little lonesome, but happy thinking that this is the last 4th I will be alone. Headed to DC on Thursday to try and find a place to live. A little nervous but have a few places lined up so hopeful. Will get to see my granddaughters in person for the first time since January. Can't wait to put my arms around them.

230 Free slaves was not always a simple matter. There
were laws in place making it difficult and sometimes impossible to just
free them.

Posted by: lin-duh en fugue at July 04, 2020 05:02 PM

---

In new England before ~1825 it was very difficult to free slaves. The various States had so many restrictions and laws against free blacks that "owners" could be fined and even jailed if their newly freed slaves cause any problems.

Connecticut was the worst offender with so many laws against free blacks living and working in the State.

Also of note, the first slaves owned in CT were Native American Pequots taken in battle during the first Pequot War in 1637.

233 The story in the sidebar about the North Texas mayor declining to enforce Gov. Abbott's mandatory mask order: I wish we'd hear about a mayor or police chief or sheriff here that doesn't "have the time or the manpower to check whether someone is wearing a mask."

that is cool that your dad passed that down to you. There is a wiki with Civil War horses and i am sure there is a lot more info on the subject. I had a novel once called "Traveller" It was a telling of the Civil War through the eyes of Lee's horse, of course it was not his only horse. I looked that book up once long ago and it has been out of print for ages, it sells for a pretty high price as I recall for a paperback.

There's the old story about how if an equestrian statue has its front feet off the ground, then the rider was a guy who had a horse, if all four feet are off the ground, the statue is haunted, and if six feet are in the air and three feet are on the ground, I don't think that's actually a horse.

250 Here in So Cal there is a huge swell running. Giant surf, and all the beaches closed on the 4th of July. I just looked at pics from The Wedge in Newport Beach. Hundreds were on the beach watching the huge surf. Cops cleared them off, and they dispersed. But just days ago the rioters, arsonists, and looters were running free with no interference from the police. The covid got a pass for protesting because racism is a public health crisis too. I am so deathly sick of this shit. Rage, hate, and frustration are all running neck neck in my gut.

Oddly enough, Buddy the Cat seems to sense my distress. Every time I sit down, he's up in my lap, or getting between me and the computer screen. He's all "Pet your kitty, pet your kitty. Ignore that stuff, and pay some 'tensions to me". Best cat in the world, and the best little pal I ever had.
