57 I like Ernest Meissonier's paintings for their detail, romantic realism and very realistic colors. This is a strong image with the figures centered but lower in the frame. My eye is pulled down from the brick work of the building to the gamblers tensely sitting at the table. Meissonier manages to show this is a serious game not a casual entertainment.

I find most of Meissonier's images have a strong illustration feel, similar to Wyeth, Rockwell (especially this painting), or Hal Foster (Prince Valiant comics). That doesn't make his works less artistic. It's just an added aspect to the paintings.

It points out different attitudes towards temperature in the past. Note that many of the windows of the structure are thrown open, to allow outside air in. And yet it is still cool enough that both men are comfortable wearing heavy coats. They didn't live with the inside of their houses at preciesly 72 degrees around the clock.

The new rule says if a student visa was issued to someone and that someone is attending only online courses they have to go home. Harvard announced all of 2020-2021 classes will be online. Which means all its foreign students have to go home and take the classes online from there.

113 And right on cue....Harvard is suing the govt on the ICE decision on student visas. The new rule says if a student visa was issued to someone and that someone is attending only online courses they have to go home. Harvard announced all of 2020-2021 classes will be online. Which means all its foreign students have to go home and take the classes online from there.

the top tier schools absolutely LOST THEIR SHIT about this yesterday

NESCAC and Centennial announced no sports the entire year, probably because so many of their student athletes are foreign (and btw, they DO NOT pay to play and go to schools here! they are paid for by American students and taxpayers)

anyway I'm loving this. Trump really hit the unis where it hurts with this! he has found something - something he didn't know was there - the preference for foreign students over American students!!! the unis use this for diversity numbers even if the foreigners are from The Netherlands, the foreigners don't pay, and the foreigners don't leave. it's a win/win/win for them - paid to run track or play soccer, have fun for five years here, meet someone and marry for a visa, get a shiny degree!

Once upon a time there was a movement to remove tribal art, as well as separate attempts to remove antiquities like Egyptian tomb stuff.

Cultural appropriation and all that.

Not sure where/how that fits into our modern era of destroying the past. Probably doesn't, because the savages would have to actually go into a museum to know what's there.

They use it largely for financial reasons. Foreign students on average pay more than American students, particularly at large state university systems that offer in-state tuition breaks.

But it's part of a bigger issue, education at large. Trump is opening a new front for the election. Trump wants schools open this fall and operating as close to normal as possible and so do the vast majority of parents, something like 70%. Democrats want to keep them locked down. Trump is also favoring giving money to charter schools including religious charter schools and Democrats are dead set against it. This is going to be a big wedge issue and it works bigly for Trump.

256 Once you decide to take up a vocation in politics, you lose whatever imprimatur the military provided you.

Politics are shrewd and contrived. They are divisive by definition. That is the antithesis of the military, no matter what side you take.

Any experience someone derives from the military is not transferable into the political arena. It doesn't provide you with the authority to speak out about any issue in the public sector.

Like other vocations it is about the issue you are arguing about, context and the basis of those decisions. Your resume doesn't make those arguments, right, just or intellectually derived. The content, facts and legitimacy of those Arguments make them considerate.

Ergo, Duckworth is an illegitimate piece of shit. Nothing she did in the service make her ridiculous, contrived, anti American and intellectually feeble actions right. She utters divisive fallacy without any moral or intelligent grounding. She's a dumb, foolish, village idiot trying to hide her dopeyness and anti Americanism behind a military facade.

Fuck you for doing that, you lowlife. You dishonor everything you falsely claim to represent. I wouldn't trade ten-thousand of you for a single brother I've buried. You execrable douche.

280 My son is having to do a college class online called Composition II. This is after taking and enjoying a class in Statistics online (ugh). The teacher asked the students to send in a note about which book they had last read and why they liked it. He read "The Idiot" by Fyodor Dostoevsky,. I will willing to guarantee he's the only one who read that.

However, I think classes online are not nearly as good as being there, and I'm glad that some parents (not there) are suing colleges over online studies only.

Exactly right. The whole master bedroom thing was obviously a decision that wasn't official (yet) coming from the board of realtors. Probably a "suggestion". So, office meeting they suggest to the realtors they don't do this so as to not offend. Since realtors are independent contractors, they can do whatever they want. For now. But I just know that every single one of them will go along with this. Once it's decided by the CAR (CA board of Realtors) they'll have to do it.

So a 7-2 means the ones who voted with the majority couldn't even remotely find a legal principle on which to hang their dissent.

And from that I conclude, Ginsberg is absolutely NOT making these decisions herself. I always sorta assumed that even where she is absolutely WRONG in her approach, she does so from something like a principled position.

Texas Education Agency Issues Guidelines for 2020 - 2021 School Year

If a parent requests virtual instruction and the school does not offer it, the parent may enroll in another school that does offer it for transfer students.

Students who report feeling feverish should be given an immediate temperature check to determine if they are symptomatic for COVID - 19.

(Numerous reasons OTHER than Covid for a child to spike a temperature)

Schools are required to comply with the governor's executive order regarding the wearing of masks.

It may be impractical for students to wear masks or face shields while participating in some non-UIL athletic or other extracurricular activities.

When it is impractical for students to wear masks or face shields during those activities, schools must require students, teachers, staff, and visitors to wear masks or face shields when entering and exiting facilities and practice areas and when not actively engaging in those activities.

Schools may, for example, allow students who are actively exercising to remove masks or face shields, as long as they maintain at least six feet of distance from other students, teachers, and staff who are not wearing masks or face shields.

369 College is essential for specific fields, like medicine or law. Even for the humanities, because you *do* learn how to write and research. Ideally it teaches you how to order your thoughts into a coherent argument. And the humanities are an essential part of civilized life, and the keepers of the humanities, like historians (or art historians ), arts and literature scholars, preserve who we were and are. BUT, I do think we need to raise the trades to an equal level or respectability. I remember in grade school, going into a trade was considered a stigma, and going to BOCES classes put you in the "special" cliques. I wish someone would make Mike Rowe Secretary of Labor or Education or something. There is no reason why the two need to be in competition. Both the academics and the trades are essential, but kids who are not good students need to be encourages towards the trades, not forced into a situation where they will fail because it's *more honorable than icky trade-school*. Then, after they've matured and want to try an academic field, go for it. My best students were all in their 30s or older.

It would be absolutely harder to do, because humans are social animals, and we learn a substantial amount from our environments. And it's done even more insidiously, because if you are reading a book or computer screen, your active brain is absorbing what you are "learning."

In social learning, it's much more passive. Which is how you get the madness of crowds, stampeding herds, and people acting like violent automatons in rioting groups, whereas the individual might never do anything similar when left to their own.

In principle, I agree that in-person classes are important. For certain students, the online experience isn't great (for others it's totally fine). I think all students would miss out on the "socialization" aspect of in-person learning, which is sad.

In practice - meh. The socialization aspect has become a net-negative. What is to be gained by social acculturation when the environment is characterized by "a shifty, know-nothing Commie asshole layabout teaching a bunch of complete blank slates to be just like him, and to go all Lord of the Flies on any student who doesn't want to?" That aspect of the university experience has been laid waste already.

As to the students who do better in live learning - again, from a practical standpoint, who cares? The colleges are an academic joke. Just do the online learning with no lectures, attendance, homework or testing requirements. And give the ones who put an Antifa-themed background on their Zoom an "A," and those who don't a "C," and those who put up a Trump 2020 one an "F."

That would just automate the system we already use.

And I only mean this for the Liberal Arts. The real disciplines for real jobs REQUIRE in-person learning. Most students don't have laboratories and workshops and operating theaters in their homes.

I disliked it too, 1971-1974. The problem, first, was that it was a big commuter university, not at all like my high school, and yet the going to class stuff was just as much of a chore. Second, I had a 45-minute bus ride each way, and my father would NOT teach me how to drive.

Third, I sure didn't want to get drafted. It wasn't terribly likely in my case, they had the birthday lottery thing then, and my number was high. But boot camp, and getting shot at in a jungle, scared the hell out of me.

So I was schlepping out to college to avoid things, not because I wanted to learn.

481 Just browsed through the local newsletter/paper for our community college the other night.

Current cost of a credit hour is $95 , which is 78% less than a credit hour at any of the state universities undergrad programs. This fall, the college will be providing a mix of online and lab classes, because, nursing, welding, and other such professions cannot be taught solely online. Businesses are lined up to not only assist with didactic and lab instruction , but have open jobs waiting for graduates.

People really need to sit down with kids and discuss the value of community colleges and "trade schools". The CC credits easily transfer to four year colleges for those , such as nursing students, who want to move on into specialized or BSN/MS programs.

497 Generally I think timed Essay tests are the best for displaying a students understanding of a topic, unless it's a purely mechanical task such as calculation of something or other. Oral examinations are also good, although they penalize any who do not have good presentation skills.

Although I always found any multiple choice test quite easy to game out and beat, I have seen some questions that are quite cleverly designed. One of my favorites, actually the ones I hate most, will be one where the Question would ask about some obscure legal topic, and then list 4 wrong answers. The Question: Which answer is the MOST wrong?

A question like that can only be answered if you understand the hierarchy of authority of different principles.

504 Testing is not teaching. Testing is just finding out whether you've taught well.

You can have all of the secure online testing protocols you want, but that will have nothing to do with teaching.

I teach German. I need to be in the room with you so that you can see how my mouth makes a sound and I can watch your mouth make the sound. I need to make you stand up and Sally stand up and force the two of you into a conversation.

We're close enough to willowed that I will vent on this. My district is one of the few in the nation that was ready for this. Everyone has a chromebook and everyone has home wifi. We went live online every day from day one.

It was marginally successful. Mind you, I was working with classes that had been together in person for 3/4 of a year so there was a basis. It was still not remotely teaching in the pure sense.

I have also just finished an online class. Now, this has two strikes against it: it's online and it's education-education. That is, it's a step toward teaching certification.

I have been to (if you count this) five universities in three languages on two continents and taught at a sixth. This is by far the dumbest educational experience I've ever been subjected to. The "teachers" do not interact, they don't respond to criticism*, they check boxes. The quality of the work I do is irrelevant, I just need the boxes checked.

*(There is a reading on school law from 1979. I pointed out how many of the points have been overturned since then and how utterly dangerous it is to teach such outdated material and they didn't even reply).

So I have very current experience as a practitioner and a victim of online education and I say nothing beats the classroom.

516 To those with hair on fire, the court has already granted cert for the NEXT TERM for the DJT taxes case from the DC Circuit.

That means that they will schedule oral arguments sometime in Oct. or Nov. or even Dec. when the new term begins as that schedule for oral arguments has not been issued yet. Unlikely to hand down a decision on it before the elections. The major win for DJT is that at least 4 justices agreed to grant cert which forestalled an order from the DC circuit to give the Dems the tax returns in time for the Nov. elections.

As a sidenote, justices file taxes too and might not want their finances to be pried into either so this fishing expedition might come a cropper anyway.

Depending on the control of the House changing, the case may even be mooted.

Interestingly, I think a lot of right leaners make the mistake of believing lefties are smart because they win even when the conclusions they arrive at are wrong.

It's easy to to be a leftist. You aren't constrained by facts, evidence, small things like can a guy become a girl or any other icky thing that conflicts with their goal. Some of them have some animal cunning and the ability to deceive others and themselves. Many are dumb as a post which is why it's so easy for leftist politicians to build a following.

I was present when he did a few of those session. It was done by his teacher on Zoom (they tried the Microsoft software first and it crashed every 15 minutes, great job Microsoft) And then, when the actual "class" started, the Teacher would work to keep the different students talking (because otherwise they would lose focus and play with the dog or the cat or whoever was physically in the room with them) BUT because of that, every "class" turned into an hour of kids talking about their pets, or their family, or whatever, and then it would close with "well please have your parents help you read this tonight" which for most of them never happened.

but anyone who logged in to the sessions most of the time "passed", of course.

Same here! I was raised like the impoverished gentry in Dickens: never really trained to do much of anything, and had no idea what sort of job I could be hired for. I assumed that, like being promoted to the next grade in school, the right job would come along for me.

A Leftist may or not be intelligent. In an earlier age (like a hundred years ago), many of them almost certainly were - it takes a curious mind to run counter to prevailing wisdom, rightly or wrongly.

In our age... who can tell? A Leftist in my generation has literally never - not once in his entire, blindered, hidebound, small-minded little existence - had an assumption or a statement challenged. By anyone.

We live in such a rigidly enforced Marxist monoculture - the word Gleichschaltung has been thrown around of late - that nobody but people on the right have to exhibit intellectual inquisitiveness or use reasoning to defend their viewpoints.

It doesn't require any difficult thinking to parrot exactly the same thing that every authority figure and every cultural figure in every institution in America repeats ad nauseum to you.

I have one that I only use for coarse sharpening when an edge is completely gone. 504So I have very current experience as a practitioner and a victim of online education and I say nothing beats the classroom

Nothing beats classroom education with an experienced and well educated teacher who cares about his job and has a calling for it.

Unfortunately, as the parent of two children dealing with the educational system from Pre-K through the university level I have seen that in most classroom cases an academically strong and expereinced and honest teacher is nowhere to be found. I have two children and have experience dealing with both public and private schools. My sons studied in the best public school in our county and received two extra hours of German language daily (German native teachers), took advantage of their magnet program and their gifted program etc. Nevertheless, I recognized right away how weak the overall system was. I supplemented their Math program with in home studies because the school Math curriculum was an absolute joke. With every passing year the leftist bent of the teachers and then outright indoctrination became more pronounced and unacceptable to us. We found that private school at 35k per year per child in the best schools in our county was actually better from the academic standpoint. However, they still could not manage to find and hire better than mediocre Physics and Spanish teachers. I could have done a 100% better job teaching Castelllano to those kids than the schools' Spanish teachers. But even in the private schools the indoctrination continued. A bit more subdued, but by then I had learned to discover the subtleties and the gimmicks the school used to hide their indoctrination so as not to lose the parents support and income.

I could write a book about my family's odyssey through the educational system. My advise to my current and future daughters in law is to homeschool their children. An educated and aware mother will do a better job with home schooling than at least 95% of the current in school teaching in this country.

Words cannot describe the despise I have and the contempt I hold for most so called American educators and their administration. I abhor the condition in which our educational system is in nowadays. Hijacked by racist anti American marxists. The destruction of a once brilliant system that used to impart knowledge to future generations is reflected in the behavior and close mindness of the brats and terrorist wannabes we see in antifa and blm today.

Our country cannot be saved until we take control of the educational system again.

Please, forgive my rant.
