76 I'm impressed with this artist. This painting is actually much simpler than most of the ones on her Wiki page. I like the misdirection of the nude in the center when it is supposed to be a self-portrait. A bit of humor there. The model is interesting in that she is realistic not romanticized but the skin tones are so carefully done. The same can be said for Knight's face. The rest of the painting and colors are just a mild background for the two figures. The whole work is very effective and a little amusing.

Check out her other paintings on her Wiki page. They are quite different with great technical detail and use of color. Her non-oil works are especially interesting.

Her photo on the Wiki page, taken when she was in her thirties shows a woman who looks modern, lively, and would be capable of having a good time.

Compared to what?

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at July 09, 2020 09:49 AM (mht8P)

84 This seems to be a woman's response on the traditionalist ideal female. The model is posed in the classical "Venus" pose. That pose symbolizes beauty and sensuousness. We see this model from the back. Her face is hidden so we don't focus on her identity, just her body. That body is not perfect. Her breasts are starting to sag and her butt is kinda dumpy. She has long, skinny legs and arms. The orange backdrop accentuates all her curves and features, but also warms up her skin tone. Women artists began to question the traditional feminine ideal. "What makes a beautiful woman? Venus is a myth. Her traits are unrealistic. This model here is reality."
The only face we see is the artist's, but in profile. In a lot of self-portraits, the artist wants you to see their full face. Here, we see only a little portion of it. She also wears a hat and her face is in shadow. This further reduces my ability to see her face and its details. Also traditionally, women would almost never be painted straight on, looking straight out at the viewer. It wasn't "ladylike" to stare someone in the eyes. Profiles or 3/4 views were desirable. The profile face in shadow with the anti-classical model may be this artist's attempt to upset the norm.

90 Half of you jackwagons have no imagination.

When you imagine yourself in the painting she's a real live girl.

If she's just a painted object on canvas she's two-dimensional and isn't going to do squats, so your distancing effort is pointless. In the context of the painting she's a real live girl. It's 1913.

You haven't had any in a while because, well, look at yourself. Now you see this. This looks good.

Reminds me of a great thread I saw once. Some teenage boy had taken a selfie of himself flexing his muscles in the bathroom mirror. He posted it and drew a circle around some dirty/water spots on the mirror and asked, "how do I get rid of these spots?"

Several people responded with Photoshop hints, etc. And then one person posted a single word and ended the thread. That word? "Windex."

is there a reason work to right is more realistic says of classical works and the work to the right is more impressionistic?

I would say the artist was saying that women (the world) are changing. The teens were feast or famine times and the US was trying out many progressive ideas including suffragette movement, temperance movement, and world peace movement (WWI less than 5 years away).

The artist looking at neither the model nor the works but off to the distance may be thinking what is to become of me!

is there a reason work to right is more realistic says of classical works and the work to the right is more impressionistic?

I would say the artist was saying that women (the world) are
changing. The teens were feast or famine times and the US was trying
out many progressive ideas including suffragette movement, temperance
movement, and world peace movement (WWI less than 5 years away).

The artist looking at neither the model nor the works but off to the distance may be thinking what is to become of me!

Posted by: rhennigantx at July 09, 2020 09:57 AM (JFO2v)

That's as good a reading as any. Better than mine. I know nothing about this artist and saw something more personal. I did see the traditional on the left and modern on the right that you describe, but I saw the figures as mirror images of each other, in a Star Trek Mirror-verse opposites kinda-way. The two figures are posed towards a centerline, and the fully-dressed, traditioanlly-rendered, modest woman sees her opposite in the reflected, nude, modern woman. For me the colors add to this. The orange background accentuates the realistic curves of the nude, putting her in a silhouette. The red-orange of the artist's sweater instead covers her figure which is outlined a little by the white canvas. All the artist's skin is in shadow while the model's is highlighted. My first thought was that the artist wanted us to think that both figures were her, and that this was a take on traditional vs. modern feminine ideals, yada, yada, yada.

There's the actual model at center, and the painting that the artist is doing of her at the far left. The artist, whose portrait this is, is the woman in the hat.

274 I am reading up on Seattle's "Amazon Tax" and it makes me wonder if no one understands how to do a cost/benefit analysis anymore. Today, Seattle spends $50-$100 million on homeless services every year. Let's take the low figure. The "Amazon Tax" is expected to raise $500 million per year, raising the total to around $550 million.

Seattle has around 12,500 homeless. At the new revenue (if it actually happens, of course) levels, the city will spend $44,000 per year per capita on the homeless.

Per capita income in the city is about $46,000. So this tax is nearly equivalent to handing the per-capita income to each and every homeless person in the city. This is insane. It would cost less to imprison them. It would cost even less than that to shove them into a rehab or mental institution (which is where most of them rightly belong). Just five years of revenues about $220,000 per head - far more than enough to build and populate a trailer park (although the problem isn't really housing).

Where is the money going? And more importantly, why isn't anyone in Seattle asking where the money is going?

Send Mazars back to 2nd and DC circuit to analyze the four elements of consideration that the Chief laid out for them. This too, will take time.

290 As Eric outlines below, this is basically a Goldilocks approach. The
test proposed by the president and the SG is too tough. The House test
is too lax. The court outlines a set of "special considerations" that
the courts should take into account on remand and sends the cases back
to the lower courts for further consideration. So I am going to take
back my suggestion that this is more of a win for the president than
Vance -- I think it's basically the same. In this set of cases and the
Vance case, we are going to have more litigation, and no one is going to
see any financial documents any time soon.

Posted by: WisRich at July 09, 2020 10:27 AM (G0vdT)

I take this as a rare win for Trump, on procedural grounds. All he has to do is delay release until November 3rd, and after that none of this matters. He might just voluntarily release them after that; there's nothing criminal in there, or else it would have all been leaked long ago. The Democrats only want them in the hope they can find something that looks embarrassing (not as much income as he said, who knows) that they can use in the campaign. Except for that, they're useless.

So the only real issue here is Time, and SCOTUS just handed Trump the Time he needs.

332 Without limits on its subpoena powers, Congress could
'exert an imperious controul' over the Executive Branch
and aggrandize itself at the President's expense, just as the
Framers feared. The Federalist No. 71, at 484 (A. Hamilton); see id., No. 48, at 332--333 (J. Madison); Bowsher v.
Synar, 478 U. S. 714, 721--722, 727 (1986). And a limitless
subpoena power would transform the 'established practice'
of the political branches. Noel Canning, 573 U. S., at 524
(internal quotation marks omitted). Instead of negotiating
over information requests, Congress could simply walk
away from the bargaining table and compel compliance in
court.
The House and the courts below suggest that these separation of powers concerns are not fully implicated by the
particular subpoenas here, but we disagree. We would have
to be "blind" not to see what '[a]ll others can see and understand': that the subpoenas do not represent a run-of-themill legislative effort but rather a clash between rival branches of government over records of intense political interest for all involved. Rumely, 345 U. S., at 44 (quoting
Child Labor Tax Case, 259 U. S. 20, 37 (1922) (Taft, C. J.)).
