It's Independence Day! [KT]

fireworks-77114504.jpg

Happy Independence Day! The folks at Maggie's Farm got going earlier than I did this morning. Bird Dog reminds us that,

It's a good day to think about all of the wonderful things about the USA.

What wonderful things about the USA come to mind for you today?

The Mount Rushmore event yesterday got some great reviews.

I noticed this one from Quint and FenelonSpoke in the EMT this morning, which includes a review of the live Fox broadcast:

Great speeches last night by Governor Kristi Noem,
The Secretary of the Interior, and President Trump. Thanks to Trump's
speechwriter Steven Miller, If you didn't hear the speeches last night
you can hear them on C-Span. God bless America!. Lord have Mercy!

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 04, 2020 07:37 AM (M7/zw)

Fox made a right mess of it. Whenever you are trying to watch a speech like that, a convention, dedication, or some other presentation, you are almost always better off going with Cspan. You can go between the two channels and it will be striking. Half the time Fox will be at commercial and the other half some blow hard will say he is "monitoring" the event.

Seems like good advice. Be prepared for the next one you watch live. The White House video of the event is included below.

Also below the fold, one reason why we need to remain vigilant about our independence.

And now, an example of why we need to remain vigilant as we celebrate Independence Day.

California legislature votes to allow discrimination:

This week, the legislature in California voted to remove the constitutional prohibition on "discriminating against or granting preferential treatment to persons on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, and public contracting." That's right, California just voted to allow racial and gender discrimination in all its public activities. The bill will move to the ballot in November for a popular vote.

It's all because of the COVID virus and George Floyd, of course. Not really.

It's not like people don't know better. Gail Heriot:

The best reason for retaining Proposition 209 isn't that repealing it will encounter opposition. It's that the initiative has been good for Californians -- of all races -- and would have been even better if followed more faithfully. Opponents argued in 1996 that if the University of California system were required to apply the same admissions standards to all students regardless of race, under-represented minority students would suffer. The reality was the opposite: It enhanced their academic success.

The plight of Asian applicants to colleges is interesting.

Affirmative action in a multi-ethnic nation:

In Malaysia, after the British colonial administration departed, the fledgling nation faced simmering ethnic tensions among native Malays (bumiputeras/"sons of the soil") and overseas Chinese and Indians. After race riots and the balkanization of political parties along ethnic lines, the Malaysian government promulgated a vast quota system to boost the Malay majority. This system ranged from the customary university sinecures and public contract set-asides to reserved storefront spots in public spaces. The term "Ali Baba" there describes an arrangement wherein "Ali," the native Malay, acts as a frontman for the actual Chinese/Indian business owner "Baba." Despite state discrimination, the overseas Chinese and Indians remain far wealthier and better educated than native Malays.

Contrast with California after prohibition of state discrimination. Gail Herriot again:

In the year immediately prior to Proposition 209's implementation, only one African American student in the entire freshman class was an honor student. Following implementation, a full 20% of African American freshmen were. That was higher than the rate for Asian Americans (16%) and extremely close to the rate for whites in the same year (22%). Even more impressive, the number of under-represented minority students in academic jeopardy collapsed.
As Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor Jr. show in their 2012 book, "Mismatch: How Affirmative Action Hurts Students It's Intended to Help, and Why Universities Won't Admit It," in the years immediately following Proposition 209, it had three effects on under-represented minorities in the UC system. It increased (1) graduation rates, (2) GPAs, and (3) the number of science or engineering majors.

Call it a Triple Crown.

And before Prop. 209, early efforts at affirmative action in California had not always achieved sterling results. Even when the truly disadvantaged, like street gang leaders, were promoted in college admissions. Here's the story of the 1969 gunfight at UCLA. Not long after that, a California academic invented Kwanzaa. It was not all based in sweetness and light.

Be careful about how the Left uses words like "diversity" and "equity". This is very disturbing:

Kendi writes, "The defining question is whether the discrimination is creating equity or inequity. If discrimination is creating equity, then it is antiracist. If discrimination is creating inequity, then it is racist." It is on this line of thought precisely that we have recently seen the California State Legislature vote to remove the anti-discrimination verbiage from its state constitution. (Emphasis mine) "Equity" would require us to discriminate against "dominant" groups and in favor of "oppressed ones," as Theory has defined it, so achieving "Equity" means doing identity-based discrimination, potentially endlessly because they'll be virtually impossible to achieve just due to random fluctuations in population dynamics.

Even creating "Equitable" outcomes like perfect parity won't be enough, however, because Critical Race Theory is also what might be described as "ethno-historical." Thus, even if there are no current disparities to be found (and there always will be because they can also be made up at the level of culture or subjective feelings), in any cases where there are historical ones to appeal to, those will have to be made up for too in order to achieve "Equity." Thus, applying "Equity" from a Critical perspective results something like a combination of affirmative action and reparations, in one form or another.

Be that as it may, if we believe the Theory upon which it is now based, the demand for "Equity" becomes hopeless and perpetual. . .

And via J.J. Sefton, now we must fight for our independence again. Maybe after a weekend break.

Hope you get to do something fun and/or meaningful.

I know that Roberts has "grown" while in SCOTUS, but it will be interesting to see what he does vis a vis this blatant racial discrimination in CA. He once said that the way to stop racial discrimination was to stop discriminating on the basis of race, suggesting he was not a fan of state-enforced racial quotas. We shall see.

Like a lot of you, I suspect, I've been doing a lot of serious thinking and praying lately, and I've come to a few conclusions. Today seems to be the perfect day to see what y'all think about them.

This country's Founding was a miracle, unlike any other in history. We've lost a lot of ground since then, but in another miracle, Trump was elected, and despite tremendous opposition, he keeps going (like Washington, in his speech yesterday).

One miracle to start this country, another at a crucial point about 240 years later ... it doesn't look like God is giving up on us just yet. So I'm going to keep trusting Trump because I trust God.

So I'm sure Trump is going to be re-elected, and his second term will be pivotal, significant -- and very surprising, as much so as Washington's victory at Trenton.

33 LOL. Like New York, Chicago is demanding that people from a bunch of red states (plus California) quarantine themselves for fourteen days if they come to Chicago.

This is intended to obscure that New York and Chicago have been charnel houses for the CCP virus, whatever the claims that the virus is now ravaging the red states (Illinois has more than 7,000 dead, and Florida has less than 4,000, despite the fact that Florida has nearly twice Illinois' population).

It's not intended to be enforced, of course - it's not like Chicago cops will be meeting planes arriving from Los Angeles. But it is an official order from the mayor.

Well. some astute police commenters at the Second City Cop blog have noted that if you go to Tennessee on your days off (one of the quarantine states), and take a picture of yourself and buy something with a credit card to prove that you were in Tennessee, then you can return to Chicago and announce that you are quarantining yourself in compliance with the mayor's order. Paid medical leave.

I wonder how many cops will try this.

Football coaches work for the universities that exist to institute wokeness in everything.

And spending as much time around black kids as these coaches do, they no doubt start to feel bad about getting rich off their labor. Especially when the kids aren't getting paid (they get free room and board though).

As with everything else, the producers of things are still operating under the impression you'll buy what they're selling, and until people don't, they aren't going to change.

It's my husband's second Independence Day as an American citizen, and appropriately enough, our talk over coffee this morning was on the joy of no longer living in a police state, and how having lived through civil war, he really hopes that it does not come here.

He still doesn't enjoy fireworks going off at unexpected moments, but when I teased him that he should buy some to celebrate, his response was "I did! I bought a thousand rounds of ammo yesterday! Doesn't that count?"

Football coaches work for the universities that exist to institute wokeness in everything.

And spending as much time around black kids as these coaches do,
they no doubt start to feel bad about getting rich off their labor.
Especially when the kids aren't getting paid (they get free room and
board though).

As with everything else, the producers of things are still operating
under the impression you'll buy what they're selling, and until people
don't, they aren't going to change.

Ugh.

So racism comes back to the US as a dominant political force.

Just how stupid are these people?

If one group is racist, and has gov't approved racism, how long before other racial groups start up their own racist organizations for protection.

Do they really think that people are going to say, oh, okay I was born (white, etc) so it's okay for you to fuck me over for things I had nothing to do with?

Nope. Human nature doesn't work that way.

I guess the Left is really determined to get that Race

89 Act I, Scene I

Near dusk on a typical suburban street. We see a jogger from the waist down. He is wearing ordinary running shoes and shorts.

Our jogger passes by some neighbors out in their yard, and says hello. The neighbors, all wearing masks, do not respond, but eye the jogger suspiciously.

This situation repeats several times. The jogger offers a friendly "hello" to neighbors who remain po-faced, their eyes fixed on him, their masked faces silent.

The jogger stops below an underpass to check his phone. The camera pulls back, and we see that he is wearing a MAGA shirt and is not wearing a mask. A single, clear drop of liquid lands on the phone screen. Our jogger looks annoyed and wipes it off while continuing to check his texts.

Another drop lands on his phone, then one on his cheek, then one on a shoe. The jogger's annoyance turns to confusion. Jump cut to a middle-aged woman with blonde frosted tips, atop the overpass, her entire face covered with a giant skull-and-crossbones mask. Cackling maniacally, she removes the cap from a gallon bottle of hand sanitizer and pours the whole bottle down upon the unseen jogger below, then pulls a book of matches from her purse.

Jump cut back to the jogger, in slight slo-mo, looking upward in horror as a deluge of liquid spills over him. He sees a lit match following, and SCREAMS.

Jump cut back to the woman atop the overpass, as she screams into the dusk: "Now you'll stay home...FOREVER!"

That's the thing though, there's a line between information being "out there," and stuff being part of the national consciousness.

Penn State was national news for months. It dominated headlines.

Why? I suspect part of it was Paterno's rather well known religious beliefs. Or maybe it just caught them by surprise.

Now these stories, where they are told, and who knows about them depends on how hard one wishes to look.

Because the universities have a vested (that's an understatement) interest in keeping athletics humming along, and the sleepy public can go on pretending these things don't exist.

The only reason college sports have become unattractive is because of wokeness. And that's because of the educational institutions that support it. Let's focus on that instead of the players that know the risks but very much enjoy playing the game.

225 I giggled when Kristi Noem said she was a farm kid. I turned to the wife and said out in S Dakota they're all farm kids, and she laughed too because she knew what I was talking about. Every year when we did the Sturgis rally and talked to the locals it seemed like they all had farms. The woman working at the sports bar in town had a farm, the dude at the gas station had a farm, the people who owned the motel we stayed at had a farm, and on and on. It didn't seem to matter what job you caught somebody at, they most likely also had a farm. Its an amazing place really. The first time I was out there was hard to put into words. It was like seeing America for the first time. The people were amazing. Kristi Noem just reminds me of the people out there, so yeah they got the leader they deserve.

How racial discrimination could be allowed under the constitution escapes me. Years ago I asked a friend who was a lawyer and who'd done work before SCOTUS what how "affirmative action" could survive *any* constitutional scrutiny. He laughed, said he had no idea.

I think it's plausible that an alignment of stars - an ultra-energized Trump and normal vote, an aroused Asian bloc vote, and the vestige of somewhat sensible voters who are otherwise dumbed down fashionable suburban white voters, might defeat the proposition.

290 >>I wonder if those "respective trainers" were male or female?

The main feeder to MSU's sexual deviant doctor was the women's gymnastics coach, Kathie Klages, who vigorously defended him after it all came to light. She was eventually arrested and convicted for lying to police during the investigation.

The trainers and assistant coaches for women's softball, women's track and cross country, and field hockey, if I remember correctly, who also sent athletes to him via the College of Osteopathic Medicine's Sports Medicine Clinic (which is open to the public, by the way) were also female, but I don't recall their names.

319 In the year immediately prior to Proposition 209's implementation, only one African American student in the entire freshman class was an honor student. Following implementation, a full 20% of African American freshmen were. That was higher than the rate for Asian Americans (16%) and extremely close to the rate for whites in the same year (22%). Even more impressive, the number of under-represented minority students in academic jeopardy collapsed.

This would be great - if the standards had remained the same. There's a vast gulf between a Caltech and a Long Beach State, and an even more vast gulf between physics and Grievance Studies, in academic rigor.

It'd be like requiring the NFL Combine to measure times in the 40 yard dash with a sundial. Gee, look how many old fat guys now qualify for the NFL!

It increased (1) graduation rates, (2) GPAs, and (3) the number of science or engineering majors.

Again, this is hopelessly naive. Graduation rates and GPAs don't mean squat if they reflect intellectual sandbox majors. And the increase in the number of science or engineering majors? An increase? From what to what? The statement suggests a massive tsunami, but going from one to two is an increase, too.

I was trying to explain to a Brit why I defended statues of Robert E. Lee. I think the breakthrough is when I brought up Oliver Cromwell.

He was a traitor, a dictator, a butcher, a bigot --- all sorts of crimes can be laid at his door, FAR more than w/ Lee.
Yet he had many great qualities, especially as a military leader, and played an enormous role in the development of Britain. THAT is why he has statues.

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at July 04, 2020 01:47 PM (M/9m0)

324 What really chaps my ass is that MSU's monster, Larry Nassar, was not employed by the university's athletic department. Football coach Mark Dantonio and basketball coach Tom Izzo had no idea who the guy was, But that didn't stop ESPN (Paula Lavigne, mostly) from raking both of them over the coals for it. It was right in the middle of the #metoo movement and Dantonio and Izzo, being the biggest public faces of the university, had to endure the public's wrath for the sins of a doctor employed at the university's college of medicine.

On the other hand, the University of Michigan's deviant doctor was removed from his position at the on-campus health clinic for getting sexually frisky with male students' butt holes, only to land a position as team doctor for Bo Schembechler's football players. ESPN has done very little reporting on the issue because UM is one of ESPN's big ratings darlings of college football.

Before the Civil War, loyalty to one's state was valued in ways we can't imagine today. We really can't.

So when Virginia seceded, Lee's patriotic duty, was to resign his commission in the US Army, and go back to his state, as a civilian. It was only when they called him and asked him to take up arms for his country, he considered it his duty to do so.

Lee was never a traitor. The country changed. He didn't.

You had some sharp shooters, a bit of cav and even black units called USCT. But the vast majority of units on both sides were state derived.
And has been said before, the state meant something it simply doessn't mean today. Think a Texan 10 years ago or a Virginian 40 years ago and even then, you are only scratching the surface.

363 All of this whining is unseemly. Practically EVERY ethnicity/ nationality has suffered from injustice, oppression, and catastrophe. Virtually. Every. Single. One.

The English suffered from the Norman Conquest that made them virtual serfs in their own country.

The Dutch suffered grievously under Spanish rule.

The Jews suffered grieviously throughout Europe and Russia.

The Germans suffered grievously in the Thirty Years' War, which killed ~ 30% of the population.

The Italians suffered grieviously under French occupation (prompting, e.g., Sicilian Vespers).

The Slavs suffered grievously under the Muslims of the Ottoman Empire, who enslaved so many that they became known as "Slavs."

The Armenians suffered grievously under the Ottoman Muslims too.

The Mesoamerican Indians suffered grievously under the Aztecs.

Most of the world suffered grievously under the Mongols.

To name a few examples, off the top of my head. Yet you don't hear them whining about it, and bleating for reparations. They got on with their lives.

It's like an athletic team that gets a bad call. They can whine about it, and lose the rest of the game, or more productively, they can put it behind them and get on with winning the game.

368 To avoid a Wall-o-Text, I will do two posts:

August 1, 1960
Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower
White House
Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. President:

At the Republication Convention I heard you mention that you have the pictures of four (4) great Americans in your office, and that included in these is a picture of Robert E. Lee.

I do not understand how any American can include Robert E. Lee as a person to be emulated, and why the President of the United States of America should do so is certainly beyond me.

The most outstanding thing that Robert E. Lee did, was to devote his best efforts to the destruction of the United States Government, and I am sure that you do not say that a person who tries to destroy our Government is worthy of being held as one of our heroes.

Will you please tell me just why you hold him in such high esteem?

Sincerely yours,

Leon W. Scott

373 Reply, from President Eisenhower:

Dear Dr. Scott:

Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War between the States the issue of secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.

General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was a poised and inspiring leader, true to the high trust reposed in him by millions of his fellow citizens; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his faith in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.

From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.

Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.

Sincerely,

Dwight D. Eisenhower

What I prefer to remember about the post Civil War era was the reconciliation. There were many times the vets came together, mainly at Gettysburg and healed old wounds. That did not solve everything as Democrats were in charge. The reconciliation has been pretty much removed from the present curriculum.

Hey I can get carried away with stuff as well as anyone. I see a hot feminine governor speaking MAGA and it enhances the nethers bigly and I may prone to exaggerate my feelings at that point.

However in their case I'd say it's probably attention, too. Who pays attention when you say something is nice... or you like it... or that you simply agree or disagree with it?

At that point you may even be asked to show your work, so probably better just to scream.

It's also an identity thing. Everything must be *love* or *hate* or *live* or *die* so the mob knows you are fully on board and could never be persuaded otherwise.

I posted this before but don't recall anyone responding to the link. What stands out here to me is that the press is giving Eisenhower the business because he supposedly criticized Lee. The irony of it all. The press is questioning a president for being too hard on Lee lol
Sure times have changed and for some our views have changed. I have always thought the CSA fought for the wrong cause and it was with God's Grace they lost in the end. But to individually disparage men without any knowledge of the context or their world is a pointless endeavor. In our present age, it seems to me that even those that could give some context are not doing so, they are hiding out.

Lee was not all good or all bad. He was a product of his time and the choices he made were based on his reality and his idea of duty. Grant was also a great of that time and any Southerner who doesn't realize that should study the history a bit more.

The story was printed by a commenter

After the war, a church service, and in the front pew was a black couple, the parishioners were upset and didn't know how to respond.

Robert Lee and family walked in and proceeded to down the aisle and set with the family in the front row.

That settled the matter.

Basil keeps pretty well in the freezer, just bag and squeeze out as much of the air as possible.

Better yet, make Pesto and freeze in an ice tray to make blocks. Pull one or two out whenever you need it and thaw.

423 Mark Pantano just blocked me on Twitter because I responded to his rant about Trump being negligent by not using federal law enforcement agencies . " You mean like the FBI?". " The same federal law enforcement agencies that tried to stage a coup?"

And BLOCKED.

Amid new pressure sparked by a national movement to correct racial wrongdoings, the Cleveland Indians said Friday night that they will review their long-debated nickname, which has been in place for 105 years.

The @nytimes is really mad, & liberals are freaking out. Once again, Trump didn't fold and came punching back. They hate him for that, & for exposing how WEAK AND DUMB they are. In other words, @realDonaldTrump hit a home run.
Thank you Mr. President for having our backs.

429 The main thing the woke movement has achieved is to make people of the demographics that built this country afraid to speak their minds publicly. Americans won't put up with that.
If Democrats manage to win the election, they will have cheated and our side of the real shooting war will begin.
Happy independence day.

Wait, the president can tell the FBI what to investigate? It's his own personal law enforcement division?

Coulda sworn that use to be something that was on the "Too be feared" list. But then again, does that mean that Trump can direct the FBI to spy on Biden's campaign and it'd be kosher?

Pretty sure Yeb would have made Mittens sad run for office look like Sherman through Georgia.

But Hialzabub would know how to deal with all this...we'd already be in the camps. (Prove me wrong)

You don't need to spy on bidens campaign. You wouldn't be able to stop laughing. if Trump uses them bad, Obama "good".
Why would Trump trust any federal agencies now?

436 Eisenhower was spot on about Lee and used the correct term of war between the states and the observation about secession at the time. Wish more people studied and understood our history. I would personally fight someone who called him a traitor in my presence. On that note I am sure the left is having the vapors over Trump using the term manifest destiny and pumping Andrew Jackson in light of the American Indian hubbub this week. He actually gets this country.
