A major phenomenon in the Melungeon lore of the 1990s and early 2000s was a revival of interest in the possible Portuguese lineage of the group, spurred in large part by college administrator Brent Kennedy’s 1994 book The Melungeons: The Resurrection of a Proud People. In this work, Kennedy gleans from his own family’s history a theory that the Melungeons originated as Islamic Moors from Iberia, Turkey, and North Africa, refugees from Spanish and English activities on the Atlantic coast in the 1500s. Masking themselves as Christian Portuguese to avoid possible ethnic cleansing, he asserts, the men made their way inland, intermarried to a limited degree with Native Americans, and created the people called Melungeons. Research into this theory is centered at the University of Virginia branch campus at Wise, and the Muslim-Portuguese account can be found at several Web sites devoted to Melungeons.

IIRC, all of the actual Hawaiian Judge rulings were reversed
by the Supreme Court on 9-0 verdicts. When you can't even get the
Notorious RBG to go along with you, your legal ruling was really

The odd thing is, they are the exact same ones you hear a million times when you think of big band. It is odd when you think about the fact that an entire musical genre is distilled down to around 15 songs. A couple decades worth of music history.
Like hearing 'Music of the 70s'. 12 songs and 5 of them are Stairway to Heaven. Although, considering other music of the 70s (the various troubadour groups) this might not be the worst thing.

What's the most likely origin, in my opinion? Scottish & Irish indentures who struck out upon completing their contracts and moved further into the interior to escape the plantation economy and its lack of opportunity for basically everyone but the large plantation owners.

Dry heave is more like it. Where I was in Chandler was about a mile or two from the dairies (most of which are now gone). Night air had a fragrance that I still haven't completely gotten out of some of the furniture.

Sounds lovely. I use an app called paprika to plan all our meals. Creates the grocery list, so no forgetting something. Also, there will probably a fresh vegetable/fruit stand closer than the grocery store you can pick that onion up at. It'll be an adjustment, it will be well worth it!

This is why I won't wear a mask to make anyone feel good. It's kinder to give them the truth - in the end when all the numbers are in, it's a bad flu, and a large proportion of the elderly who died were packed into boxcars/nursing homes deliberately by Democrat governors.

hang out in the swimming pool all day. Used to be able to sneak into
the resorts, they probably made that tougher now. I remember one,
might have been the Princess, that had this big rock island in the
middle of the pool, and there was this bar hidden in the middle of the
island, in a grotto, and you could only get to it by swimming into it.

I always wondered where you were on Camelback. in the early 70's I had a paper route and I used to stop off and get a icee at the little Circle K with a gravel parking lot on 44th and Camelback. I think now the big multistory Circle K HQ is on the site. A little bit down on the north side there's this big office complex, there used to be a grubby little motel that rented by the week, we had to stay in in for a while in 1968 when our new house hit construction delays. My mom hated it, but I loved it because I would go out early in the morning and find about 50 different weird types of beetles and other bugs floating in the pool.
some grubby red dot Indian owned it, never took care of it, it was falling down, and then my dad later found out that the office people paid him 3 or 4 million for his junked out wreck of a motel. ah, memories.

yeah, a lot of people did that. We had a 4 wheel drive land cruiser, and my dad would get maps (they were circulated among 4 wheeler fans) that showed smaller Anasazi sites that had been located up various canyons, that the Interior Dep't had never gotten around to even looking at, much less protecting. (this was on Nat'l Forest land which makes up a huge percentage of Arizona territory)
He would drive us out on day trips to try and find some of these - they weren't huge, but you could tell they had probably been the communal apartments of 5 or 6 families that worked that canyon. What you had to do was first get a feel for the layout of the walls, and then find the midden, or garbage dump which would be a raised area a few yards away. Once you found that, you could dig and in less than an hour you could fill a couple baskets full of really nicely colored pottery shards, and whatever else they threw away while they were there.
yeah that's all illegal now. it was probably illegal then, but nobody cared.

There are no official definitions, but I'd say there are some widely used informal ones. Of course they vary between people.
SoCal - border up to Santa Barbara (well, the town, so southern SB County, anyway).
Central coast - Buellton to ..... hmmm. San Miguel? Yeah, that's barely an afterthough along the 101, with a mission in ruins, but after that ..... pretty empty all the way until - what? Anyway, off the coast. On the coast, is Cambria sort of the border, or up to Big Sur - or San Simeon? I think the northern border of Central Coast is kind of vague.
NorCal - once you've established its southern border, then everything up to the OR border.

Haven't been back in years, but my old man was airborne in Korea and had a tattoo. Anyway, he does into this liquor store when I was a kid and comes out and gets in the car. A guys comes up to the car and says, I saw your tattoo, how about giving me a couple bucks since I'm also a veteran. My dad doesn't say anything but puts the car in reverse and hits the guy with the fender of the car as he pulls out of the parking lot.
I think that's a lesson for us all.

Neither were "hottest" - how miserable it was, as opposed to temperature.
Hanoi, in June, and Massawa (Red Sea, coast of Eritrea), in September. The latter was almost comical, you couldn't believe you were outside, in nature, and not in some industrial facility. Humidity. In Hanoi the miserable heat/humidity made visiting Ho's tomb very nice - only cool/dry place I was for 3 or 4 days. And everyone in the procession agreed - the white-gloved guards had to keep shooing people along, was pretty clear everyone wanted to hang for a bit, and not because they gave a dong about Uncle Ho.

The ancient and original meaning of irony (Socratic irony, e.g.) is quite different. It is only ironic IF the other person doesn't recognize that one is ironizing. It's gracious.
Sarcasm is almost the opposite, since it aims low enough that the meanest capacities are expected to "get" it. Vulgar sarcasm flatters itself by means of the term "irony."

Mr. Josephson was then a tenant at the high-end Buena Park, CA apartment complex that my folks managed for a couple years, while my Dad was on Shore Duty as a Navy Recruiter at the downtown L.A. station *and* the Watts station.

I got to see my Dad play "catch" with Mr. Josephson in the alley behind the enclosed, private parking garages which were part of this complex.
"Catch". First time I got a sense of the smoke that'd come off the ball when thrown in a lazer-straight line by an NFL Pro arm.
I think Dad caught about 10% of 'em. And he was a fit, hard, USN E-5 stud who grew up with hard farm life, and wasn't afraid of pain.
Tangent. Once, my Dad & Mom (year before they divorced) had to attend a Dress Mess USN Ball of some kind or another in downtown Los Angeles. No sitter was available, and I was down with a miserable cold. 4th grade, I was.
Mr. Josephson came over for the evening as my babysitter.

Oh, and I did get to meet Rosie Grier, the Fearsome Foursome, and about 1/3 of the Los Angeles Rams (1967), after an arsonist had torched about 11 of those private garage stalls.
They all came over to help Les Josephson and my Dad serve the 100s of firemen and police a hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon, after struggling to contain that fire to *just* the garages. Had it spread to the adjoining apartment building, it would've been horrible x10.
Good thing the Recreation Room at this complex featured a "double kitchen". Two stoves, two ovens, two fridges. They rocked that place like an IHOP on steroids.

TALENT wise, alas, it's no comparison. Today's players have developed into physical uber-beasts the like which the world has never seen on such a mass-produced scale.
When a J.J. Watt has a vertical leap that an NBA player would envy, and 275 lb. linebackers have Bolt-like 40 yard sprint times.. and here's the thing.
In Watt's first two seasons in the league, he was exceptional. No one had seen his like, before.
Less than ten years later, other players have set his standards as their goal, and are raising the level of the game to that as "what is expected".
The pity of all this?

We had quite the experience with the well drilling "crew" today. I've got a good well. Well over 20GPM, maybe pushing 50. (Won't know until it's measured accurately, and whether they'll do it, I don't know). I'll be putting in a 2HP 20GPMish pump.
Anyway, this bunch is a bunch of jackass, jackleg, jackwagon jackoffs (all the jacks and more), and that's being charitable. Rude, crude, and lewd. Real peaches. Outstanding citizens. Ignoramuses.
Late this afternoon, as they were winding down and taking the rig down, they had a blow up, a falling out. The young flunky did something that pissed off the boss jackwagon, and that started a bellowing cussing session that could be heard for a mile.
The head jackwagon threw the flunky off the site, and told him to "git his damn phone and call somebody, 'cause you ain't riding in my truck".
At one point I head, "I ain't yo' daddy boy, I'm a man!". Exactly what that meant, I'm not sure. But it was entertaining.

I inspected their drilling rig today after they left. Big ass diesel driving the whole thing, looked like a Cummins. It was driving a hydraulic pump on one end -- YUGE, that drove the drill and worked the hydraulic rams.
On the other end was a little air compressor. 1200 CFM. Scroll type, I believe. Big boy.
It was a nice rig, and what it did to deserve being operated by that bunch of sorries, I don't know.

I was reading user reviews of coffee makers. I wanted one without all the bells and whistles, that is, on or off, no timer, no clock. Some people who bought that no frills product wrote reviews complaining about a lack of a shut-off timer (it's easy to forget to turn it off/the coffee burned/etc.). Well, the product never claimed it had a shut-off timer, idjits.

But even so you would naturally think you would run into a lot of jackasses.
It might just be the kind of person she attracted but it was startlingly few who were troublemakers. At her craft table it was different. We weren't the type to just sit back, we would engage people. And you could spot the shits a mile off. They would pick up your stuff and inspect it like they were an archaeologist. The only ones that would do that. Never buyers.
Then almost inevitably they would ask some leading question toward their pet issue, so they could get your answer and hope to level some little tirade at you. So weird. You wonder why they even bother.

A few years ago I can still remember being on vacation and this checkout lady at the supermarket apologizing to me profusely for something she did - some mistake, I legit don't remember what it was - and I told her "Don't worry about it, life's too short". The relief on her face was palpable. It was like I was speaking a foreign language, like I'd taken an anvil off her chest.
I'm not bragging about this, it's how I've always been with people, it is not anything to me - I'm just saying I remember being so taken by her reaction and feeling especially sorry for her for the amount of sheer assholery she must deal with on a minute to minute basis there.

A proper mobile home is emplaced only as temporary abode while one's Furher Bunker is dug in and the concrete poured atop fitted rebar, as is proper.
On a serious note. I'm shopping for acreage. Could be twenty acres, could be forty. Depends on where it is an how motivated the seller.
I'll hope to gain it with an existing, good condition abode, ready and waiting.
But if I have to build, it's going to feature multiple hardened cover points, and a great many discrete firing ports.
Plus a central, elevated and concealed 1,000 gal water tank, and similarly situated generator and at least 500 gal of diesel fuel to feed said generator.

Odds are, I'll be doing this dead-solo. Fifteen years of relationship down the drain, but KILL ME NOW, before I'll move into a Del Webb format kind of community. Just how it is.
If I find the right piece of land, the same geography that allows for a 1000 yd. rifle range will also allow for a 3,000 ft. (plus 200 ft. over-run on either end) grass runway.
I do not intend for my later years to be boring years. (and I'd have zero probs right now with a flight physical, so go figure)

Go with either Certain-Teed "Select Shingle Master" certified. Unique in the industry, as it's not a purchased certification, but rather, an actually "pass the test" kind of certification.
GAF offers a similar Master certification, but it's as much purchased as it is certified by testing.
Oh, hell. It's just purchased.
But GAF shingles don't necessarily suck. And their Master program at least gets you GOOD installers.
Don't EVEN ask me about Owens Corning products or programs. I don't want to get banned from Ace for badspeak.

A brief side-current to a thread earlier today reminded me to go check, and it's true - all the new military decorations in the USSR during WWII (that had historical names attached) were for pre-Revolutionary Russian military greats. Kutuzov, Suvorov, Nevsky - even one named after a Cossack leader.
There was a reason for that, of course. While terror still lurked behind every possible turn, and ideological claptrap was still barked at the soldiers when there was time, all the real motivation was based on the most basic sort of nationalism: survival. When things still looked might sporty in 1942, several of the new decorations were created. National military heritage, not Bolshevik blather, was the call.

I am blessed in that regard. 3 out of 4 of us have a clue.
3 out of 4 of us are stable, but divorced.
But then, we take family seriously. I've taken care of my now 91 year old Mom for 11 years now. Only reason I came back to California.

I looked it up, it's a bio of Natalie Wood by a Suzanne Finstad. She claims that Natalie came home and caught Wagner in bed with their butler, and that was actually the cause of their divorce.
Apparently Wagner kept this "butler" in his employ well before the marriage, and in a 2 room apartment. Said Natalie overdosed on sleeping pills that night she caught him.

Nice! Dave's was more realistic. Stone built keep. Great built in Feast Hall, fantastic built in bar.
Plus about 10 other buildings people helped him build over the years. Everything from a smithy, to a HUGE Tree fort people could sleep in.
We had a falling out a few years ago, but now he has a full on Jousting arena on his land.
His 'Revels' were.... interesting. They kicked everyone under 18 out at dusk, because things got, interesting (one of the reasons I bowed out, impossible to keep score in a semi swinger scene).

I found out yesterday to be careful for what you wish. At the start of the Kovid Krud I had wished we could get rid of the "we're all in this toegether" TV commercials and go back to the normal class action lawsuits, dish soap, tampon, and erectile dysfunction commercials.
Watching an episode of RiffTrax on Pluto TV and a commercial comes on for tampons starring Amy Schumer.
She plays her usual wide eyed, brain dead character and evidently at age 39 (I looked it up) did not know about tampons or that there are different sizes for different "times". I guess regular TV ain't paying the bills no more.

I've had those before and didn't have much luck with them. I currently use a power drill with screwdriver attachments but you still have to start the screw in the hole first. And where I usually drop the screw if in handling it to get in in the hole. I drop every thing randomly too, not just tiny screws. neuropathy sux.

The rescues we're fostering are doing fine. Musya is the oldest at 10 and a half but she's a little firecracker. Beast at 8 and a half is the most fragile so he's getting special attention.
Doppel is a 3 year old and the worst off mentally but he's starting to come around, looks happy to see me when I come in and lets me scratch his neck. Blaze and Rocket, his yearling sons, are the best off physically and now come up to the gate for attention.
They're all good dogs who just need to get accustomed to good treatment and our routines.
