Gun Thread: Father's Day Mail Bag Edition! [Weasel]

HFD scaled.jpg

Happy Father's day to all the Moms and Dads out there!

Holy Crap, people! You really blowed-up the 'ol mailbox this week! Thank you so much for taking the time send in all the great pictures, stories and other information. I'm a little behind on responding to email so if you sent something and I haven't replied to you, thanks for your patience! Now let's take a peek below and see what we have, shall we?

Last week, our pal Kilroy wasn't here suggested "a fun subject might be the nomenclature of cartridges and what the numbers represent" and our other pal Neon Madman, the cartridge collecting expert, jumped right on it with the following:

Hooo, boy. Yes, it would be fun. I could write pages about this. However, let me try to put forth a very condensed version of what passes as a cartridge numbering system. I say this because there really isn't a true defined system, it is more of a traditional way of doing things that is frequently modified by marketing specialists, manufacturers, and others.

Shotgun shells are typically defined by a set of numbers: gauge, length, powder charge, shot weight, and shot size. The gauge is the diameter of the shotshell. Traditionally, a shotgun bore size was defined by the weight of a pure lead ball that would fit the bore; a 12 gauge shotgun had a bore such that a pure lead ball that fit it weighed one twelfth of a pound. A 10 gauge shotgun had a bore that matched a lead ball weighing one tenth of a pound. This was a hangover from the days when cannon were sized in a similar manner; a 12-pounder cannon shot a cannonball that weighed 12 pounds.

Shotgun shell length is important to pay attention to, and the allowable shell length for a particular gun will be stamped on the barrel. These are typically 2 3/4, 3, or 3 1/2 inches, and in the old days 2 5/8 or 2 9/16 chamberings existed. The reason to pay attention is that if a longer shell is put in than the gun is chambered for, such as a 3 inch shell in a 2 3/4 chamber, there may not be enough room for the shell crimp to unfold when the shell is fired, causing an obstruction and high pressure condition that could blow the gun.

Powder charge is numbered in "dram equivalent", something that is almost meaningless to the modern shooter. It is the equivalent of a black powder charge weight in drams, and basically the higher the number, the more powerful the charge. Of course, weight of the shot charge defines how much shot the shell is loaded with in ounces, and the shot size number defines how big the pellets are.

OK, let's talk about rifle cartridges. Here's where it really starts to get wild. The traditional format is .xxx-yyy-zzz [name], where .xxx is the caliber or bullet diameter in thousandth of an inch, yyy is the powder charge weight in grains, and zzz is the bullet weight in grains. The [name] is typically the manufacturer who developed the cartridge, or the intended user. For example, let's look at the .45-70-405 Government cartridge. This is .45 caliber, originally loaded with 70 grains of black powder, and had a 405 grain lead bullet. "Government" refers to the fact that this was originally a military cartridge for the Trapdoor Springfield rifle.

The important thing to remember is that for rifles (and pistols), this system is traditional, not absolute. Everyone messes with it. The .30-06 Springfield cartridge should be .30 caliber, but actually is .308 (same as the .308 Winchester). The -06 refers to the date of introduction (1906), not the powder charge. The .38 Special pistol cartridge shoots the same .357 caliber bullet as the .357 Magnum. The .250-3000 Savage cartridge referred to one with a .250 caliber bullet that achieved 3000 FPS velocity. European cartridges generally use the bullet diameter and cartridge case length in millimeters, such as the 8x57 Mauser.

Anyone interested in cartridges should pick up a copy of "Cartridges of the World", a fascinating book about the subject.

Way to bitch slap us with some knowledge, Neon Madman! Thank you!

Last week our pal Xipe Totec provided us with great questions to start a load development discussion, and this week Xipe has sent in some pictures from his collection.

This is my M-44. Mannlicher style stock blank from Richards micro fit stocks. Timney trigger. Full length bedded. Welded turn down bolt handle. Burris light magnum long eye relief scope. Rust blueing. 8.6 pounds. Laminated stock for warp resistance. Laminated stock is difficult to checker due to various grain direction and hardness. Bore was slugged at .313" so I am shooting Hornady SST 150 grain .312" bullets. I intend to hand load to 2700 FPS. I will send a view of the other side shortly.

xipe 1 scaled.jpg

xipe 2 scaled.jpg

This is my hand made rifle. It is a single shot falling block action. Except for buying a Shilen bbl. blank, it is 100% hand built. I dragged the Ozark walnut log out of the woods. I made the mounts for the original American made Weaver scope. I machined the action parts and hardened them in my antique forge. The action parts are Austempered O-1 tool steel. The receiver is hardened and tempered 4140. The fore end is free floated via an aluminum 'I' beam I machined and bolted to the front of the receiver. My design. Basic design is DeHass Vault Lock #2 with many mods. Slow rust blue I did myself. Chambered in 30-40 Krag. I carved and checkered the stock from raw milled walnut. Shoots 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards. Hand loaded to 2700 FPS. Best part: it weighs 5 pounds! Estimated time investment 850 hours. 24" bbl. It has taken several bucks and is completely ambidextrous.

Like how Xipe casually mentions that he wandered out to the workshop and threw together his own rifle? Damn, Man! Very nicely done!

Next we have a nice report from our pal Scuba_Dude on his range trip and MicroMoMe with our pal CBD:

Well it finally happened after all these months, I MADE IT TO THE RANGE!!!!! Woo Hoo!!! And joining me was no other than CBD himself!

So what can I say, it was a beautiful day outside, low 80's, light wind, blue skies and the tinkling of brass hitting the concrete.

This is my first time ever going to my range during the week, I did not expect it to be busy but it was!! Due to the Wuhan Flu our outdoor range decided the way to do social distancing was to close ever other port. This attributed to the crowded conditions but I will say I have NEVER seen the range this busy. Pretty much every port on the 100 yard rifle range was occupied by someone exercising their 2A Right which had every other port closed. The pistol range if I remember correctly tried to do that but to be honest I can't say it looked like every other port was closed. CBD, please correct me if I am mistaken. I met up with CBD outside the clubhouse and CBD is a very nice, friendly person and the first person from AoS I met outside the blog and a COB to boot!!

We proceeded to the pistol range as the 100 yard range looked to be full. Because I reside in the Peoples Republic of New York City I am not permitted to take my handgun across State Lines, and our range is in New Jersey. CBD who resides in NJ brought one of his pistols, a Walther PPQ in .45ACP and was gracious enough to let me give it a try. We placed the target stand around 7-10 yards from the bench and started putting rounds down range. The first picture shows our first 10 rounds each. I was shooting on the upper left hand target and CBD was the bottom right. As you can see CBD really loves his Walther, I think he sleeps with it. I think we put at least 50 rounds each through the Walther. The second picture shows how the target was when we had finished.

SD 1 scaled.jpg

sd 2 scaled.jpg

Moving along, Scuba_Dude continues his report:

Next we went onto the 100 yard range. CBD brought his AR-15 and I brought my Savage 110 in .308 which I never really completed zeroing the scope the last time.

First my rifle.
We got there just as the line went cold for target change. I decided to first put my target at the 50 yard line and see what the rifle would do. Range goes hot and I am looking through the scope at the lowest power setting, put the crosshairs at the center of the target and squeeze the trigger.
Boom!! Dead Center!

sd 5 scaled.jpg

Well, I am thinking this must be a fluke. I relax a bit, again look through the scope, put the crosshairs on the center of target and squeeze the trigger. Boom!! Dead Center again. Wow!! What is going on? I decided to see what would happen if I aim at the metal plates that our range has placed 100 yards away. Still keeping the scope on the lowest power I aim at one of the 8-10 inch circular plates they have hanging there and squeeze the trigger. Nailed it!! I then shoot at a couple more steel targets at 100 yards and hit them all. So I came back to my target and aimed at the target at the bottom left and shoot. Hmmm, almost 1 MOA low and left. I shot 2 more times and you can see they both were low and left. Took 2 more shots at center of target and with one 1/2 MOA low and the other 1 MOA low. When the line went cold I took my stand out to 100 yards and threw a shoot and see target on it. The 5 shots you see on there were me aiming at the center and 2 shots with me aiming at the top right target. So, I think I still have to work on zeroing the scope a bit more.

sd 6 scaled.jpg

Now onto CBD. I will give the highlights but he may want to fill in more of the details. For some reason after he took his first shot with the AR it did not cycle and he spent the next 10 - 15 minutes trying to rack the bolt back. He wound up taking down the AR there trying to figure out what was wrong. A guy in the port next to him graciously helped diagnose what was wrong with the rifle and even took the time to break down the bolt assembly to find out why the rifle would not cycle. I will say this, you will find the NICEST and most HELPFUL people at a gun range.

So that is it for now. Had a great time and it was really great meeting CBD. Hopefully it will not be the last time.

Outstanding report, Scuba_Dude! Thank you and congratulations to you both on some nice shooting! Those fancy-pants ARs can be finicky at first, and I'm sure CDB will have it sorted out in short order. Get it? Short order As in cook. HAHAHAHAHA! I crack myself up.

Next we have a great submission from our pal waepnedmann who has a very creative solution for a reloading bench when space is at a premium.

We are limited on space, so I designed and built this two-sided reloading bench on casters. It is very stable even while sizing rifle brass, but pivots around easily when I want to use my Dillon Square-Deal B. There is an overhanging top shelf with a strip of LED lights on each side, but they were too bright for the photo. The orange buckets are for brass. This has worked out very well.

That is cooler than shit, waepnedmann, and very nicely done! Thanks for sharing!

For those shooting vintage military weapons, have you ever wondered if your surplus ammo is corrosive? Well our pal redc1c4 sends us an excellent summary of both corrosive and non-corrosive USGI ammunition with identifying headstamps, found at AmmoGarand.com. In addition to the ammo list, there is a lot of great Garand information at the site. Check it out! Thanks redc1c4!

12 Yay gub thread!

Calibers are a fascinating subject, and as I've gone farther down the rabbit hole into historical weapons, it just gets more interesting.

Consider 9mm. How many variations are there? Everyone knows 9mm luger, but you've got 9mm Steyr, Glisenti, Makarov, Largo and of course Short/Kurz/Corso.

Interestingly, 9mm Largo (aka 9x23mm, 9mm Bergmann-Mars) is different than 9mm Steyr which has the same dimensions.

It's all so confusing.

Probably I will do some nickel-on-barrel dry fire this week, just as I did early this year, it really seemed to help with the long DAO pull on my two carry pieces.
Good news, this was the last surgery, everything is working as it's supposed to; when the hole in my belly heals up I will be able to wear a belt and OWB holster again ! Yay !

23 I'm seeing a number of manufactures with "E-Z" or whatever the nomenclature is for easy racking slides in multiple calibers. But not .45. I get why. But is it coming?

As someone who's ageing and has issue with their hands, this is interesting to me.

24 I did make it to the range this week, and the weapons passed around were:

Walther P99
Taurus 85 Titanium
Walther PK380
SW MP 380 E-Z
Browning 1911 in 380

Yeah, it was kind of a mouse gun roundup.

So my take based on shooting:

The Browning is really just a target gun. No way you would want to carry it. Sure, it's slimmer than the others, feels good, but the sights are old school, it's single-action only, which feels really out of date (yes, coming from me that's something) but the biggest thing is that you have to hold down the magazine release button to put a new magazine in. No way you want to do that under stress.

I'm not a huge fan of spare mags for concealed carry, but it's a fiddly detail that makes it more suited to plinking than actual SHTF situations.

The Smith and Walther 380s are fraternal twins, so not much difference. Both very fun to use, quick for rapid-fire engagement.

PPQ is great is always, and revolvers are always fun.

We did some improvised timed drills where we engaged man-sized targets and damn those Smith and Walther guns recover *fast*.

28 Cartridge names. There have been several center fire .22's given sundry names to make them distinctive, but all using ~.224 slugs. .219 Zipper, .218 Bee. Rem .222, others...

A while back we spoke of the naval gun, the 3"/50 caliber. A little confusing at first glance, but note that there is no leading decimal point in front of '50'. It is the Navy's practice to call (some) guns according the the product of the bore and barrel length. That being said, the length of the above mentioned is 3 x 50 =150"

As an aside, a weapon that owns a warm spot in my heart is the 106mm Recoilless Rifle. It actually has a 105mm bore, but named '106mm' to avoid confusing ammo with 105mm field gun ammo.

Put it on my tripod, downloaded the software to my phone and got everything working for my range trip in the morning. Rubber bands work great for testing and getting set up. I found out that I shoot rubber bands between 70 and 105 fps.

I shot one this weekend. Very easy to rack, but .380 has never been considered a savage caliber. Honestly, the chief difference between the Smith and Walther seemed to be the Smith had a more ergonomic slide for easier grip and a captive spring.

Captive springs are wonderful.

I realized I left out 9x23 Winchester, which also does not fit with 9x23 Steyr or 9x23 Largo.

The problem is that some of the rounds will chamber in guns that cannot handle them. A lot of early 9mm designs were pure blowback, so if you add too much oomph, bad things happen.

They typically have heavy recoil springs to help compensate, which makes them not for the weak of grip.

The M1907 Dreyse is only a .32 but the little bastard has a super-strong spring, almost no place to grip the slide and it doesn't lock open - ever! There's actually no slide lock on it.

Fun to shoot once you figure it out, though.

I have the S&W E-Z in 380... purchased for my wife who didn't like it. It's a better shooting 380 than, say, a Taurus Spectrum or Ruger LCP. Both of which I own, and consider "disposable."

I'm with this. I hunted both 20 & 12's for years, sundry loads, including buck. The 20 will do the job (easily) and will be more manageable. Fairly light loads are fine for home defense...even Joe Biden's front door.

63 Another measuring thing: Before, I did my seating depth tests rather arbitrarily - start with factory and go both directions in .003 increments until I found a great depth
Now, I'm going to go up to the lands and work backwards (just like Weasel's Pix) in .003 increments. More to shift over to measuring from different points; I think it will be the same depth, but just measured differently and more consistently.

65 Got a sweet score at Kittery Trading Post a couple weeks back. A Euroarms repro of an 1853 Enfield three band rifle-musket, in VERY good condition, for the princely sum of $300. I've never seen them less than $600 online. Even came with a sling and bayonet.

The reason for the low price is that the previous owner had cut the barrel one inch (probably because of a worn muzzle is my guess). It's a pro job, even and crowned, and you can't tell unless you lay it next to an uncut example.

68 Good evening, everyone. That was a nice precis for cartridge nomenclaure. The thing to remember is that cartridge names are a mishmash of terms and mesurements cobbled together over a couple of centuries, some in English, some in metric, some based on the case OD dimensions and some on the bullet diameter. Then throw in some ignorant marketing types.

The results are 'interesting'.

70 Yay!! Gun thread day!! Howdy weasel, howdy my fellow gun cranks...
No shooting this week, but as always hopeful for the next trip.
Working a little of a pair of piece of junk pistols I inherited from my Dad. (Happy Fathers Day to all by the way)
One is an H and R 922 that someone tried to engrave. Talk about NO talent... I have replaced all the missing parts except the trigger spring. The one I have is a mirror image of what is supposed to be there. I ordered the correct replacement from Numrich
The other is (I think) an Iver Johnson American Bulldog , a 5 shot in 38 S and W. It would not cock, or half cock even. I disassembled that and found someone long ago had ground the sear down...Not a smart move. This is a cheeap crap POS pistol, but it is a first version, so pre 1880. Parts are on order for this too..
Mr USPS will no doubt show up sooner or later, and I will see if I can get them to work again.
All the gun news from my spot in the nations capital...

76 Nice work Xipe! and good shooting Scuba Dude!

This week was Russian week, as in Mosins ala 7.62X54R.
First up was the Mosin 91/30. Shooting surplus Russian, surplus Czech and new Sellier & Bellot ammo. She shot well out to 400 yards, but after that the surplus Russian took a dive and I had to adjust for the 500 and 600 yard targets to 600 and 700 meters on the rifle. Same with the Sellier & Bellot. The Czech ammo was the best as I could hit the 500-600 with the proper settings on the rear sight.

Next up was the Mosin M44 Carbine. A beast. Damn thing kicks like a mule. She did fine out to 350 yards but after that I just could not get any hits on the steel from 400-500-600 even though I could see the splashes all around the target. Oh well.

Rapid fire offhand with both out to 150 yards gave you about a 50% hit rate but both ran well thru 20 rounds each with 5 round stripper clip reloads.

Overall, the Mosins are clunky bolt action rifles but damn fun to shoot and reasonably accurate. By the time I was done shooting a couple hundred rounds I felt like I had been run over by a dump truck as they will work you running that bolt over and over. All the surplus ammo is corrosive so I run hot water thru the barrel and then clean as usual when done shooting.

The 91/30 was made mid war in 1943 and the M44 was made in 1945. Simple, robust and still shooting after 70 plus years speaks for itself.

No impact to HD usage.

88 Totally love the reloading bench framework. I'm cramped for space and have just barely moved into some precision shooting. At the cost of 6.5 Creedmoors, reloading is a major priority.
Also, learned more about shotgun shells in three minutes here than I had in a previous undisclosed but fairly large number of years.
Range report: tested my first purchased (my Pop gave my his .30-06 a couple of years ago) rifle, a Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmoor with an Athlon Cronus BTR scope.
I like. I like A LOT! (Weasel, I sent a pic of my last group to the email. Use/Don't Use as you see fit. Appreciate your encouragement!)
Other range reports: took newbies to the pistol range Saturday. They are scary on safety but willing to learn. I can work with that.

90 I think I mentioned last week that I want to get a bolt action rifle for 22 magnum. After looking at the used market and new offerings I'm leaning towards the Ruger American version. I rarely buy a new firearm so this was an unusual exercise.

These Rugers get very good reviews but if anyone has experience with the Ruger American rimfires, I would like to hear about it.

92 Cartridge nomenclature can definitely be confusing - and so is the naming of firearms. "Hatcher's Notebook" is available online for download and is a quick 650 pages As I understand it the important thing to remember starting out, the decimal or metric size refers to the barrel, not the bullet itself.

Naming or numbering of the weapons is pretty kooky too at times - Japan for example, their rifles (and aircraft) were numbered by how many years it had been since the latest emperor had been installed, and they were on a diffefent year system. Hence "Zero" and such.

Yep. Year of the Fascist Era.

Proof marks are a whole 'nother story. I saw some dick trying to sell an Astra 400 as "rare, no inspection stamp."

Uh, no. My cursory survey of what was for sale found *none* of the 400s had any stamps, just serial number and manufacturer info. I believe that was because they went directly into the Army. Maybe private sale ones had the marks, but I haven't seen any and anyhow they would be much, much rarer than the ones that went to the Spanish Army.

When the dps trooper got to me, I handed him my dl, registration, insurance, and chcl, and proceeded to tell him it was my duty to inform him I had a gun in the car. Last time I checked VA was NOT a must inform state, but the carry permits are tied to your car registration so in a traffic stop the cop already knows you have a permit.

122 101 No range report, bu I really reviewed the rules here in VA on conceal carry. Reciprocal carry with MT, so, I'm not breaking that law, like I would if I went to Joisey. One thing I did not find - Is VA a "must inform" State? Say I get pulled over for going a wee bit too fast on my bike and get pulled over. My instinct would be to say, "oops Ossifer, here is my license, registration and insurance. Not get off the bike and sit there until he said to do something else. Can someone who might be a denizen of this locale put me some info?

123 Uh, no.
Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at June 21, 2020 07:56 PM (cfSRQ)

Correct on both counts! The Eyeties would date a rifle "1938" and put a "XVI" for the 16th year of old Benito's rule, starting in 1922.

The Astra 400s did not get any marks till after 1928 or there abouts and one I have from 1923? has none while another from the late 20's has a mark like the Mercedes Benz symbol in front of the trigger guard.

You may want to also consider making and saving a dummy round with your final jump seating depth for future reference. In my experience, an overbore cartridge will cause .001" of throat erosion for every 100 rounds. Something to keep an eye on.

160 Since the revolver thing has died down a bit, I'm going to stir the pot a little bit by noting that during my post-range gun cleaning, the revolver was BY Far the fastest and easiest one to clean.

Oh, and no disassembly, just open the cylinder. I'd say it took half as long as any of the others.

Another nice point: no worries about picking up loose brass. Whether at a public range or private one, cleaning up brass is a pain. With the revolver, just dump it into your case or the can or whatever and reload.

Thompson was a legend in his own mind. I wouldn't be surprised if he spread the rumors himself to make him seem more edgy.

The best take I saw on him was that he was promising, wrote some decent stuff and then got into drugs and it pretty much shut him down. He had the early fame from Hell's Angels and Fear and Loathing, but couldn't meet a deadline, couldn't string a sentence together so had to come up with shtick to keep the dough flowing.

I had a similar Luger story, except I bought mine as a part of a lot. I was underwhelmed and didn't find it to be 'all that.' I sold it at a very modest profit.

It never ran well, the toggle lock was a pain to disassemble and clean, and I just didn't feel attached to it. I don't miss it.

178 Range time this week was duty day as an RO, and for the 2nd month in a row, a record level of business.

I didn't notice any obviously new gun-owners or shooters. One can tell from guns and behavior. Wide variety of guns.

So I think it's still a combo of cabin-fever, not shooting for a few months, and weird schedules/time off.

Got a Navy crew in from the USS Tulsa, doing their handgun qualifications. It's an LCS - so their handguns might be the most dangerous thing the ship brings to the party (just kidding!).

179 FYI:

A "pound" (weight or "mass" in England, I think, not sure) was originally defined as 7,000 plump grains of wheat.

That is a pretty accurate way of defining a pound. 7,000 units takes care of minor variances in each grain. And everybody knew what wheat was. So a standard was born.

And today, we still weigh bullets and powder in "grains."

And there are 7,000 grains in a pound of powder.

The website sent me a fraud alert warning today, and I'm in the process of attempting to get my money back (Contacted my bank, they initiated a fraud investigation). Looking back, there were plenty of warning signs, but the sellers FFL number checked out. Problem is, whomever the POS that's behind this scam likely stole an actual FFL holder's identity. I will never purchase a firearm of a private individual again unless we can meet in person. Lesson learned.

Jinkies, some mags are painfully expensive.

210 Hairyback I also enjoy shooting the bejeesus out of Mosins, especially as the surplus ammo I have is incredibly cheap, and I've still got a small pile of it. I use a recoil pad, though, or there's an annoying soreness the next day.

Fingers can get mashed up if you use stripper clips and try to load rapidly (as I do when I use them in an action rifle match). I've done a bit of work to loosen the interrupters - that's what inhibits the cartridges when you're pushing them down in to the magazine - but I need to do more. I've seen interviews with Red Army vets where they just pushed them down in, effortlessly.

Back in '04, when they first put me on BP meds, those were pretty much my numbers, too. Headache and all.

They only held me though for 22 hours. That way, I wasn't "admitted".

Pro-tip. You'll shoot tighter groups with the BP well controlled. Pulse going all THUMP! THUMP! in the scope is not conducive to good accuracy.

On the other, it is extremely rage-inducing to those who do. And that's rather the point, to provoke good people, who will do something that can be twisted around for further gaslighting, with the help of a corrupted "news" media, and the ambulatory turds whom have embedded themselves like ticks in government.

217 I always use hot (very hot, just boiled) water down the bores of the Mosins after using the surplus ammo, followed by regular cleaning. The villain are the residues from the primers, which are hydrophilic - they attract/hold H2O. In a dry climate (like mine), it's not that big a deal to do it immediately, but in humid places I'd advise people to do the boiled water cleaning as soon as practical after shooting (I used to it immediately - brought a big Thermos of boiling hot water to the range).

I have a 110 in .30-06. Had similar problem and was getting frustrated, so I decided to pack it in. Grabbed the rifle to put it in the case and discovered "HOT BARREL".....
Savages go off to the left by a ton when that barrel heats up. So--even though this is hard to do--put a 3-round group downrange and sit down, shut up, for at least 5 minutes. Check your target with your scope/spotting scope, adjust, and 3 more.
Yes it will take quite some time.

Yup.....the interrupters on my 91/30 and M44 are too tight and get bound up like you describe so I load 4 in the stripper and gives me room to pop the round past it.

I hate to take them out of the stock after they have been zeroed but one rainy, boring day I guess I will to see if I can loosen the interrupters up a bit.

Going to take my M1 carbines out week after next and I will let you know how far out I can hit from 100 thru 600 yards. Should be a blast.

224 Interesting Guns Owned By Others At The Range, latest edition.

Actually, mostly just one. A K-31 straight-pull rifle, but in immaculate, unissued condition. Beautiful wood and metal. Owner said the "P" stamp on it indicated is had been privately owned, and presumably didn't count as the Swiss owner's service rifle (which they keep at home). I don't know, but this thing was gorgeous. And of course it shot like a dream.

Another guy, an off-duty RO, had an M1 Carbine that he said was all "correct" except for the rear sight (Inland), it's in excellent condition, but most interestingly to me, he got it for $600 .... recently. That's about half price, or less, for a gun like that, in CA, today.

He said seller was a long-time owner who just wanted it going to a "good home" - someone who knew and appreciated the history of the gun, and would be shooting it. Nice story.

Why am I never on the receiving ends of such stories??

Worked the Colt LW Commander with the new Trijicon sights for about 50 rounds. Sure wish I'd had them back in the day. Maybe it wouldn't have taken me 30 years to learn how to shoot a 1911 decently.

232 Metallic salts are the culprit in corrosive ammunition.

Oil won't touch it, or protect against it. It can't really be mechanically removed as it gets deep into the pores and tool marks of the rifling.

Water is the only way, hot soapy water, is among the best ways to clean a rifle bore, corrosive primers or not. The military figured this out early on. Unfortunately people (and the military today, even) tend to have a decided aversion to this. They don't understand the principles, because water is something that ordinarily causes a barrel to rust.

There are water-based bore cleaners, USGI stuff from years ago. Ballistol mixed 90-10 is pretty effective too.

Nice pocket gun, since it is way too hot to carry a full size gun. Out the door, with tax, about $280. Not my first choice, but these days, you get what you can.Had the 9mm version a while ago, and recoil was unpleasant, and that is putting it mildly. Can recommend, if recoil and slide racking a factor. The .380 slide is much easier to work. Jasonj

242 Sort of out of the blue, but the other day at the range some people had a new shooter with them and it was not entirely smooth getting him familiar with working their tactical shotguns. I suggested they get dummy rounds for precisely this purpose. I think they will be doing so.

I make my own inert/dummy rounds in all calibers I reload, of course, but for those I don't reload, I use dummybullet.com.

I highly highly recommend all new gun-owners to get dummy rounds for their platform - doesn't matter if semi-auto, or shotgun, whatever. Of course they're especially important for semi-s (rifle or handgun) for function testing and practice, but even for revolvers, too.

There are of course commercial brands (Snap-Caps, etc), which serve the same purpose. I like dummybullet because he uses real brass cases, the rounds are exact replicas of regular ammo.

Posted by: rhomboid at June 21, 2020 09:09 PM (El6T/)

243 FWIW, I generally load my centerfire long guns one round at a time. Garands are the exception. I like the slower pace and it keeps the barrels from getting too hot. I don't do any competitions these days so rapid reloading isn't needed.

Given my marksmanship, a hot barrel may not make a difference but avoiding them couldn't hurt. :-)

253 Late to the party, I am. Got a question for the experts here, but first some background info:

There's a potential critter problem at my (late) Dad's place. I saw a raccoon running across his back yard, in broad daylight. Mature animal, not small.

IF it lives on the property, it's likely down in the shrubbery of lower yard. There's a drainage ditch running along the rear edge of the property, so attracts wildlife even tho it's "in town." See deer there regularly, coming in for a drink or even lounging in the grass. Kinda cool, the deer I mean.

There are scratch marks along the edges of the lawn, like something digging lightly. I see no evidence of anything accessing the house or garage.

I have a few gubs, but nothing suppressed. Got some .22 short HPs and a rifle they'd work in BUT... too unwieldy and hard to conceal from nosy neighbors.

Problem? Inside city limits. Would these rounds still be "quiet enough" using a revolver?

I don't know if 'coon is a mama w/babies, or was just passing thru/having a snack or whatever, but when I'm working in that yard, don't want to be unarmed in case that critter DOES indeed live there and decides to defend territory... I don't want to attract a lot of attention if things go sideways.

Also, for point n shoot, what recommendations for gub?

Many thanks for your assistance!

Yes, this is the whole point, at least on the reportage. To enrage decent, peaceable people, and provoke war, basically. Your tax dollars at work.

I suspect the vast bulk of Americans are united, in the sense they'd just as soon see dirty cops fed through a wood chipper, right along with the race hustlers and the trustafarian university types.

The press job, and politicians on the left particularly is to create divisions, real or imagined.

Be careful about shooting in city limits but....this sounds like .410 territory to me. A single shot 410 is fairly cheap pest control.

Sub-sonic .22lr?
Posted by: Weasel at June 21, 2020 09:27 PM

Yes, but it is "quiet enough" using revolver?

Again, not wanting to draw attention by carrying a rifle. (which isn't practical while doing yardwork anyway.)

Posted by: JQ at June 21, 2020 09:33 PM (whOIk)

272 ..Late to the party, I am.

Posted by: JQ at June 21, 2020 09:20 PM (whOIk)

They'll be way too loud out of a revolver.

Use your .22 rifle with the longest barrel, make sure you KNOW it's PERFECTLY zeroed with THAT ammo. Or, such ammo as you prefer.

For stealthy, suburban pest control, I'd use a Sub-Sonic Remington, Ely or Aguila cartridge.

Buy all three, see which is the most accurate in YOUR rifle.

Then, IF POSSIBLE, shoot from about 3 ft. back from an open window, from INSIDE the house.

The subsonic round won't make a supersonic "crack" to catch the neighbor's attention, and the space of the room will contain most of the wee "BOP!" that a subsonic round makes when emerging from a long barrel.

Good luck!

276 I would think that a high power pellet gun would be the ticket for raccoons in the city limits. I've seen lot's of raccoons and even skunks mid day, while they may be primarily nocturnal they do venture out during the day.

284 Got lucky and Academy Sports got a truck in last night with 8 of them on it and some .45acp ammo. Tried to buy one yesterday but there were literally two dozen people at the gun counter and I couldn't get close and almost everything had sold out by noon.

Stopped by the local Sportsman warehouse Friday and almost every ammo shelf was bare other than some dove shotgun shells and about 20 ammo cans of 6.5 creedmore.

Very few long guns mostly long barrel shotguns and some really large guns that might have been designed to knock out a Panzer MK IV.

I am a High Road member and took your suggestion, but I am too computer illiterate to figure out how to post the pictures.

Incidentally, the reason the bench is so stable probably has to do with the hundreds of pounds of bullets stored on the lower shelves. I do not even have to lock the casters when sizing rifle brass.
I am on a concrete slab with a ceramic tile floor.
I think it might be difficult to roll on a wood sub-floor with carpeting.
