Politico: What Gives Democrats Nightmares Is the Possibility That the Economy Will Start Growing if the Nation Is Reopened

Yes, we all knew this.

This blows zero minds.

But thank you for admitting it.

More from Politico, but quoted from Twitchy:

In early April, Jason Furman, a top economist in the Obama administration and now a professor at Harvard, was speaking via Zoom to a large bipartisan group of top officials from both parties. The economy had just been shut down, unemployment was spiking, and some policymakers were predicting an era worse than the Great Depression. The economic carnage seemed likely to doom President Donald Trump’s chances at reelection.

Furman, tapped to give the opening presentation, looked into his screen of poorly lit boxes of frightened wonks and made a startling claim.

"We are about to see the best economic data we've seen in the history of this country," he said.

...

Furman's counterintuitive pitch has caused some Democrats, especially Obama alumni, around Washington to panic. "This is my big worry," said a former Obama White House official who is still close to the former president. Asked about the level of concern among top party officials, he said, "It's high -- high, high, high, high."

The fact that Democrats have admitted this -- and Politico has published their admission -- will not, however, stop the media from claiming that it's a "conspiracy theory" to say the Democrats want to keep critical parts of the country locked down to depress the economy.

Not at all. Trump knows how to read people, get them riled up, and give them enough rope to hang themselves. Sometimes seeing the obvious things and moving on them is the most difficult. It's why you see guys making money hand over fist for business ventures that make you go "how the hell didn't I see that there was money there?"

Plus, and I can't stress this enough, Trump is not a believer in the Imperial Presidency. Which means he's willing to let states do their own thing and suffer the consequences.

I think there might be enough people with two brain cells to rub together to make this less dire than predicted. Time will tell, but this is a *very* stupid strategy.

The economic damage done is real and deep. If you have the opportunity to get back to work, you should do it immediately even if it means taking a "pay cut" from the temporarily-juiced UI payment. And since the economic damage is real and unemployment is going to hand on for some time (maybe a longish time), fortune will not favor those who wait since the jobs won't be there anymore when they get around to it - and the UI payout is going to be smaller after nine months or so than if they had gone and gotten a job when they were able to.

85 This is no joke. They honestly are terrified that this will happen and I damned well guarantee that if everything is busted wide open, the next week the economy will explode because millions of people want to go back to work and hundreds of thousands of businesses are desperate to re open and get rolling again.

And on top of that, tens of millions of consumers are desperate to get out and shop and eat and travel again. Explode is the right word.

So the Dems have to delay this as much as possible -- or, if any way conceivable, prevent the opening entirely. That's why the 9th circus made their imbecilic decision with the CA lawsuit, and why I think the Oregon Supreme Court will impossibly decide that somehow the governor can keep the lockdown going after 28 days without consulting the legislature even though that's exactly what the Oregon constitution plainly says.

It doesn't matter if this stuff gets overturned, as long as it takes long enough for it to be overturned. They are playing defense now, trying to extend the damage as late as possible so the recovery is too late to help the president in the election.

87 The economic contraction was artificially produced. There was no underlying problem to be resolved, so when people begin to move normally, much of what we lost will be able to come back quickly.

The economy will be damaged, because some businesses will not be able to take two months of zero income vs. liabilities, but there is no economic reason why the contraction won't reverse quickly, and THAT's what they're worried about-- Trump going into an election with an obviously recovering economy.

I don't see how we get record numbers if the freedom is still limited.

Run your restaurant at 40% capacity? Restaurants barely make money at full capacity. They're not going to be booming back they're going to be dying more slowly.

The only thing open here is the supermarket and it does not have capacity limits. People have learned to give each other six feet.

We got to open wide, nationwide, in remastered 70 mm.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at May 26, 2020 02:44 PM

Let's not forget the things that have already been destroyed this year and cannot be regained.

Sports leagues have all been shut down for the past 2 months. That is two months of local restaurants, bars, sports bars, hotels, airline industry etc. not getting the business they counted on related to sporting events.

Concerts, local festivities, weddings, etc. all cancelled the past 2 months and for the foreseeable future. More events that restaurants, bars, sports bars, hotels, airline industry etc. were counting on for revenue this year.

Sports leagues? Sure, there MIGHT be games, but no fans allowed in stadiums and arenas. And fans only allowed at 50% capacity at restaurants and bars and sports bars.

And that's just businesses related to sports and concerts. And that's just the businesses that are still around now and haven't already folded due to the last 2 months of not meeting revenue expectations and not being able to plan for the future, because no one has any idea when things will re-open 100% and when customers will be back 100%.

I don't see record numbers happening. You don't recover from the worst crash in history within 1 quarter.

MAYBE if you flipped a switch and everything went right back to fully open, no restrictions at all. Maybe.

But with restrictions likely still in place "until there is a vaccine" as Whitmer has in her "6-Phase Plan to Re-Open"... not gonna happen.

But... I hope I am wrong.

************************

BS talking point. The federal supplement ($600 a week) to state unemployment expires at end of July. Plus many states that I know of (like my own) have their unemployment system set up so that if you are offered a job and you don't take it without cause (i.e., you don't have to move to take a job, for example), then you lose your *state* unemployment benefits. So, I'm pretty sure that would apply to the supplement too, as you have to be receiving state unemployment to get it.

tbh, given the trauma of the shut down even for those of us who kept working and earning, I'm okay with people who didn't have that kind of stability receiving a short term increase than what they would have gotten without the supplement.

107 There IS a path to electoral victory out of this, I think Trump is stumbling his way towards it, helped by the fact that the Dems are actively cheerleading the country's destruction.

I would caution not to pay much attention to the DJIA - that is more a feature of how much loose cash has been pumped into the system, it had nowhere else to go. It is completely disconnected to the real economy now, and THAT is our real problem, the one we have to address.

And the reason I point this out is so that all of us know we have to work on the RIGHT things, the effective things, not just sit back and think we're doing good because we fake-pumped the markets back up.

JOBS are the name of the game - right now, there's still a possiblity that we could be north of 20% unemployment on Election day, and that could be a disaster. We can NOT sit back and just hope that jobs will magically show up; a lot of the old economy is gone forever (travel, tourism, etc) and it's not coming back. Those jobs have to be replaced with NEW jobs. There's a great potential for some of those jobs to come from Manufacturing, brought back here from where it's been sent by the globalists

But that is going to take a HUGE amount of effort for there to be any impact by November, and we need to start formulating those specific plans *now*. We don't have any time to waste.

Which is why they have such phased plans based on future developments that can't be guaranteed.

But they will probably not be able to pull it off. People are increasingly ignoring the rules and it can't be managed. The only play is to try to elongate it and keep running #twoWeeks campaigns until they can't anymore because no one is complying. The question becomes, "can they pull it off for long enough to make the pain run for long enough that recovery becomes unlikely or impossible in any reasonable time frame?"

And to that question my answer is, "I don't know."

I am concerned about that as well, but... unemployment offices have been really lax about the rules (you have to look for work etc) because you know, no jobs and its against the rules to look for work, etc. If things open up completely, well its game on again with all the rules.

Plus, unless they are monumental retards -- always a possibility with the GOP -- congress will not keep the double unemployment benefits going forever.

114 Don't see how Trump is turning anything into anything.

He greatly assisted in unleashing the economy, and reversing key int'l trends, with very little help from "his" party or of course Congress.

The economy will no do what it does when not suppressed, with the added fuel of the helpful changes Trump helped usher in.

He didn't "maneuver" anyone, everyone followed their own path on their own initiative, including governors, the federal system is/was not a stunt or a preference, it's how things work and how authorities are based and apart from special emergency funding how $$ are raised and allocated.

And if anything, if we could get any actual full record of what's been going on, it will likely show Trump failing to follow the learning curve fast enough WRT the virus situation. The "phased re-opening" nonsense was indefensible on a scientific basis in its own right, and was ludicrously inappropriate when applied to almost all states and regions.

Reportedly (again, we have tiny scraps of unconfirmed info, for the most part) Trump called DeSantis to slow him down on his re-opening program, and he openly/mildly chided whatshisname in GA. Neither move showed any departure from the nearly uniformly wrong advice provided by CDC up to that time.

Trump was in fine re-election position before, during, and now after the "crisis". For many reasons.

Only new thing, and as usual it's a dark/negative one, is further illustration of how it's not a country, just people living around each other - the indifference of the very large segment for whom little has changed financially all through this to the significant sectors that have been body-slammed.

Not me - don't care. Doesn't affect me within 24 hours - don't understand, don't really care. I'm OK. Oh - too bad about those people, whoever they are. A new low in lack of citizenship.

Family of five, that adds up with concessions and all. There is no getting through downtown now because of all the Illinois plates. People want goods and services, and they want them yesterday.

142 And that's just businesses related to sports and concerts. And that's
just the businesses that are still around now and haven't already folded
due to the last 2 months of not meeting revenue expectations and not
being able to plan for the future, because no one has any idea when
things will re-open 100% and when customers will be back 100%.

I don't see record numbers happening. You don't recover from the worst crash in history within 1 quarter.

-------------

If the economy plunges 50%, but then grows 100% you get back to the same spot. That's not what is going to happen, but let's just say the economy plunged 25%, growing 10% is reasonable. That is amazing growth, but you are obviously still way behind. But the story that can be told is the economy is growing.

As for sports leagues, their contraction has little effect on the overall economy.

143 The best way to think of an Economy, with all of it's variables and it's complexities, is as a Living Things. It reacts, it changes, it grows. It gets sick. It can be killed.

Like any living thing, the killing is much easier than the growing. Killing is fast, growing takes years of effort and the right environment. That's why this is going to take years to recover from.

BUT as long as people think Trump is heading things in the right direction, they'll support him, just like they supported FDR in 1936.

159 Non-compliance, and non-enforcement, were a large part of what I called the restrictions "crumbling". Has been happening all along, now substantial in many places.

CA has been a weird hybrid all along. Never the most draconian or hysterical/unscientific Fuhrerbefehlen coming from Sacramento or most counties, comparatively, and from early on, a fairly blase reaction by Newsom to defiance. It started a while ago. In each case Sacramento has just ignored, or gone along with, county "rebellions" (OC beach thing, for a few days, might be only exception).

Yep. My guess is that, like bankruptcy, the economy will recover slowly, then suddenly. There will be the first green shoots type of recovery, and then a lot of people will suddenly realize things aren't so bad, actually they're pretty good, in fact they're GREAT (compared to what they were so recently).

At that point, the economy will skyrocket, and I suspect a good proportion of the damage done will be repaired.

205 Exactly. From the positioning, the cop with his knee on the guy's neck probably could have cuffed him, too - and then pinned him by the shoulders. If he couldn't, then isn't that his partner's job? But no. Better to strut and stare down the people taping you than to make sure your suspect doesn't die by your actions.

229 Coronavirus "immunity" (we're talking about C-19, not the whole other set of such viruses that have long been around, right?) appears likely to be reached at a fairly low thresh-hold, thanks to lots of things, like heterogeneous populations with varying t-cell strength and probably residual background resistance from exposure to other similar viruses etc.

But that's all kind of beside the point.

What's the deadliness of this bug?

Sort of like a close election in a state where various precincts have well-understood voting patterns, "there aren't enough votes" (i.e. deaths in total, and esp. by demographic concentration) left out there to change the outcome of this election: C-19 is very deadly to medically infirm elderly in confined environments, with inadequate care, and with current therapies.

Every phrase there matters.

It is less dangerous to all healthy people under 50 (and possibly 65) than influenza.

Much less dangerous for most of that bulk of the population.

There is no rational basis to do almost *anything* differently with such a virus. Not for 95% of the population, anyway.

But with restrictions likely still in place "until there is a vaccine" as Whitmer has in her "6-Phase Plan to Re-Open"... not gonna happen. .

Wait until neighboring states start eating them for lunch. Eventually they're going to give up on the Biden farce and start attending to their own re-elections. You can be sure they'll be patting themselves on the back for controlling the virus so well that they're able to fully re-open.

Posted by: t-bird at May 26, 2020 02:57 PM

It does not matter what neighboring states are doing.

I'm not sure if anyone here keeps up with the sporting world, but they are shut down and not opening up for fans this year. At all.

In addition, if the leagues do start up again (still not a certainty), not only will they not have full stadiums and arenas, they will not be playing games in all stadiums and arenas. NBA is talking about playing all games at Disney in Florida. So all those NBA cities where restaurants, bars, sports bars, hotels, airlines depended on people in those cities for revenue for sporting events... not gonna happen.

And that's just the NBA. Same goes for NHL and MLB. MLB last I checked is talking about only holding games in CA and AZ. So all those other MLB cities which usually host games... not gonna happen.

That is a massive amount of revenue that local businesses depend on from sporting events that is now gone for an entire year.

I'm not sure how you survive and/or recover from that.

FOr me the breaking point was the antifa attacks. Cops were there, they saw what was happening, they did nothing. On purpose. yes they ere probably told to but THEY STILL DID NOTHING as Antifa beat people bloody, destroyed property, burned and looted, and gave a reporter brain damage.

The they arrested the people who fought back.

That was when I realized that the cops, at least enough of them, aren't about justice, law, or order. They're just the enforcement arm of the leftist establishment.

We're in the same place that, say, blacks were in the 1950s. Cops protect whitey and are just thugs to enforce the will of bigots on blacks.

I have not heard anything about the $450 bonus, but here's what I do know. Employers who applied for and received small business loans have to spend 75% of that money on payroll over the next two years in order to convert the loan to a grant. The clock started ticking as soon as they received the funds, so they are desperate to get the employees back to work ASAP. Most states don't pay that much in unemployment, so it is the extra $600 per week from the feds that is making the difference. Steve Mnuchin has stated that if employers report to (sure which) "authority" that they offered a laid-off employee their job back and the employee refuses, said employee will become ineligible to receive the extra $600. In addition, I have heard that, in recognition of the fact that employers are bidding against the government and therefore powerless in some cases to get their workers back, legislation is being proposed to lower the threshold from 75% to 50%. In the event that the threshold remains at 75%, perhaps Kudlow was suggesting that employers use part of their small business loan to pay those $450 bonuses.

It was awful that we so willingly gave up so much power to so few, and assumed they'd never abuse it.

Free men don't do shit like that.

334 The people living in the high cost urban areas are wondering why they should be paying $3,500 a month for a 1/6th share of an apartment when they are working from home and all those wonderful urban amenities are gone and they realized they never really used them in the first place.

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens.

I don't see any changes in silicon valley, as far as big tech. For the google/fb/twatter/ebays, it's literally a lifestyle on the campus. They certainly want these people back under their thumbs as soon as possible, because if they live/eat/play there they have more control. Can't have them beginning to form their own thoughts outside that of the collective.

KCMO and KCKS are two separate distinctly different cities with their own separate municipal governments.

When somebody talks about Kansas City in the vernacular... thats Kansas City MO.

it is not one city that straddles the state line.

My favorite was a boat with about 20 trump flags, and at the top, a California flag flown upside-down

348 Out of passing curiosity, why? How is this a federal matter? State
police makes perfect sense, but what is the FBI's jurisdiction?

18 U.S. Code 242 - deprivation of Constitutional rights under color of law. The US vs Screws case Supreme Court ruling stated depriving somebody of their life without due process is a violation of 5th amendment rights. Under that law it does not matter if they meant to kill him - the fact that he died opens them to a potential death sentence.

349 Corporate real estate is going to be a blood bath. It appears the promise of working from home is finally being realized. Companies are going to wonder why they are paying the overhead for office space when those costs can be dumped on the employees. Employees are realizing, hey, that commute and those costs for child care and lunches and all the rest of it are not worth it.

It's going to be VERY interesting to watch how this develops.

The crucial piece: to work from home indefinitely the work product has to be tangible to the employer.

Son has been told that he will only have to come into the office one day a week, the rest: work-from-home.

----------

In the short-term yes, but in the long-run, I don't know. I think we will see more hybrid options, but people were already doing that. Extrapolating long-term trends under the current environment is likely causing us to see things that won't play out. Right now, there is simply less work to be done. There is no reason to have so many people at work. If the economy takes off, will people continue to be able to work from home? Some yes. Time will tell.

Group meetings will be us all online but sitting in the same area. No walking around and talking with others. All insane rules. For engineers who are naturally introverts.

359 Thanks for posting the excerpts, Ace. Don't like to subsidize left wing media like Politico by giving them a click.

Positives from this dismal episode:
1) Any sentient being sees how deluded and broken the MSM is. A bonus, lots of left journos laid off.
2) While people less distracted by their daily life, Obamagate docs released by the hero Grenell showing what a phony corrupt creed Obama is. Won't convince die hard Dems but will prompt questions from those on the fence
3) Expose the danger of Dem control freaks in state governments. People--even Karens--don't like getting their marching orders from others. (Karens ok when guidance aligns with their own ideas, otherwise no way).

Trump admin talking about a couple of ways to coax workers back--besides the negative of ending unemployment bonus. The simple idea of payroll tax holiday won't get the approval of Congress--not enough lobbyist graft for them in that idea. BUT, some deducts for businesses not laying off workers as well as sheltering some $$ of earned vs. unemployment income would work.

Net effect--huge % increases in growth because--Animal spirits.

Kick the can of figuring out debt and deficits (which are dire, for sure) down the road

Posted by: grammie winger at May 26, 2020 03:34 PM (lwiT4)

Michigan owned Toledo. Ohio decided to take it. There was a battle. A pig died and Ohioans lost. To ensure no more farm animals would die nor Ohioans would have their butts handed to them, the Frostbit Convention granted the apparently useless UP in exchange for Toledo.

Also, the term for people from Michigan is Michiganian. "Michigander" was an insult lobbed by a senator. The only ones who used it afterwards were writers at the Detroit Free Press. As a joke.

Naturally, I hope the Michigander Whitmer's goose is cooked in the next election.

Posted by: SH at May 26, 2020 03:02 PM

I thought I was explaining how the contraction of professional sports has a MAJOR effect on the overall economy.

I don't understand how cities across the country with hundreds of hotels, restaurants, bars, sports bars, etc which all depend on revenue from fans coming out to watch sports or frequent their businesses before and after games which now will not have any of that business for an entire year... how that has little effect on the economy?

Hundreds of small businesses across the country --- thousands of jobs --- folding and not coming back has little effect on the economy?

Not snark... I guess I really don't understand the economy...
