Good for you CBD. As a native NYer, the NYT was the first paper I ever read. I did the crossword as a youngster with my mother and aunt, who were quite good at them. But I haven't read it for years.
My mom kept her on line subscription until she passed this year just to try and do the crossword to keep her mind sharp. But she did not read it anymore. It has had no useful journalistic purpose for decades. Posted by: RKinRoanoke at May 26, 2020 11:07 AM (KopDd) 25

She kept reading, mostly out of habit I think, but the last few years have been a real eye opener for her. I speak with her quite often since my dad passed and I've been walking her through the truth of the Russia hoax while she would tell me what the Times told her. Judge Sullivan just broke the Fourth Wall. For decades everyone has known yet only spoken of in whispers the fact that Judges usually don't write their own opinions, but rather their law clerks do. And those opinions have been deemed by all to be quite sufficient for purposes of merely ruling on a case. But NOW something SUPER important has occurred: it's Sullivan's ass on the line, so suddenly we'd better get a seasoned attorney involved to write the response. Hmmmm. Good thing it wasn't the litigants' butts in the sling. Posted by: Sharkman Posted by: Sharkman at May 26, 2020 11:20 AM (YPTnD) 102

That's my thinking, but like you - who knows. Judge Sullivan is not a party to any case, so not sure why he needs counsel. We can expect his counsel will (if allowed to be entered in) move to ask for additional time to give a response. So I guess I don't really care so long as the May 31 date is upheld. Posted by: SH at May 26, 2020 11:16 AM (sX1BW) I agree, and I would be shocked beyond belief if any extra time was granted. I started reading the NYT 50 years ago when my parents decided that their teenaged son needed some culture and got a subscription. I loved Russell Baker and was able to gag my way through the Sunday Arts & Leisure section, but I had no interest in the rest of it, even though I religiously tried. They even managed to screw up the sports pages with their nose-up-the-ass prose and attempts to seem high-minded. In fact a large part of the appeal of the WSJ (for me) was that they seemed to go out of their way to write in plain, manly English. I 'spose that's because they were targeting businessmen instead of wannabe intellectuals.

Dallas Morning News, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune, St. Louis Post Dispatch, LA Times, Phoenix Sun, Denver Post, Minneapolis Star Tribune, any yes, the NY Times...the papers that defined news then are (if they even exist any more) parodies of what they once were. I binged watch a number of films this weekend...
The African Queen, not a good movie. Also Blue Thunder while an awesome spectacle, has some major problems. When Murphy crash lands the chopper on the roof of the construction trailer, the resulting NTSB investigation would have put him out of commission for at least four months. He wouldn't be flying experimental military helicopters the next day. The best thing about the film is the transfer I got, holy crap, stuff that was fuzzy and muted has been punched up spectacularly. Next up is Grave of The Fireflies and The Triplets of Bellville. Posted by: Thomas Bender at May 26, 2020 11:42 AM (1vb+E) 241
>>Why didn't any of the repubs refute that?
>>I'm asking you directly John Cornyn. Well Cornyn didn't see that testimony because it was in the House and it was classified. But Republicans like Nunes, Ratcliffe and others did refute it but they didn't get nearly the traction that Democrats did for obvious reasons like the theme of this thread. Remember, all of that testimony was classified thanks to Schiff. They couldn't release it and they didn't leak. Kind of what separates the good guy from the bad guys. What's more interesting to me is that we now have proof that Schiff, Swalwell, Fat Nadler and the rest were flat out lying for 3 years and almost nobody in the media or even on the left is calling them out it at all. Hell, many leftists still think Russia collusion was real. Posted by: JackStraw at May 26, 2020 11:43 AM (ZLI7S) 242

Posted by: Sooner at May 26, 2020 11:30 AM (Fs5vw) Starting when I was probably 7 or 8 years old, I would read my Dad's National Geographics virtually cover-to-cover. I loved the science, physical geography, and maps. Hell, I had one of their big physical atlases from around 1972. And I would watch every National Geographic Special that came on CBS. Then I noticed that the less filigree they had on their yellow border, the more disillusioned I became with their SJW bullshit. I finally quit reading it around 1985 or so. The Man Who Knew Too Much from the year before was close, but had some stuff holding it back. The early sound stuff was all wonky, but he had been developing strongly in the silent era, even in films that didn't match his later films. The Farmer's Wife, for instance, is actually a rather delightful little romantic comedy. But it was The 39 Steps where everything came together for him in the most complete package. I also have a question about the series. The reviews for it repeatedly
mention the graphic violence in it. I realize a lot of the it is taken up with the Civil War, but does the damn thing spend an inordinate amount of film highlighting people getting legs blown off, jaws broken off by butt stocks, etc.? I've seen just a couple trailers and thought it might be overboard on the realism for me. I don't do well with violence in movies. --------- Much of the violence is graphic. But as Sherman said, War is Hell. One of last night's themes was Grant realizing this was going to be a bloody, bloody war, so maybe the violence was purposefully graphic. I suspect it will continue to be graphic. But the battle scenes were fairly minimal. Posted by: SH at May 26, 2020 11:58 AM (sX1BW) 317

Fuck the Pulitzer Committee, in particular. Even other Western socialists considered Duranty a liar and disgrace. There are mountains of evidence against him, and none of it more damning than his very own admissions to the British Foreign Office that he lied for Stalin. And yet, the Pulitzer commission said in 2003: "In its review of the 13 articles, the Board determined that Mr. Duranty's 1931 work, measured by today's standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short. In that regard, the Board's view is similar to that of The New York Times itself and of some scholars who have examined his 1931 reports. However, the board concluded that there was not clear and convincing evidence of deliberate deception, the relevant standard in this case. Revoking a prize 71 years after it was awarded under different circumstances, when all principals are dead and unable to respond, would be a momentous step and therefore would have to rise to that threshold." No prize they've issued since this statement is valid, as far as I'm concerned. They're only standard is "loyal Communist," and nothing beyond. I've been doing some drone flights over the weekend. Karen HOA Board Prez came by as I was flying to tell me "we've had some concerns about the drone flying overhead" and suggested that the HOA would prohibit such things. Ah, it was fun. Told her that the HOA Board does not override FAA authority over airspace and I had full FAA authorization to fly. She then said they could make it "illegal" to take off or land in the neighborhood, to which I said that since I'm on private property they really couldn't enforce that from my front yard. 324 General Forrest was no doubt the most interesting. He and General Stuart proved the adage that the Confederate Army died of West Point. Whenever Confederate generals followed doctrine taught to them in a previous life, they had problems, and sometimes outright failure. This was due to logistics. Those that thought outside the box achieved remarkable success. One also can't forget General Jackson, and his "foot cavalry". West Point doctrine would have deemed it impossible to move large bodies of troops solely on the force march.

Then she started bitching about the noise a drone 200 ft in the air generates...while my neighbor was mowing his lawn. I pointed out that if noise was a concern, would we outlaw lawn mowing next? Grant also displayed something else, the ability to make a mistake and stop it from being completely catastrophic and taking his nerve.
Most of the Union Generals made a mistake, they focused on the mistake, then plowed ahead, then a mistake turned into a disaster- then they broke. Grant might make the same kind of mistake (Cold Harbor is a good example) but he'd just acknowledge it and not let it derail him. Hooker (especially), McClellan (who never really would commit to the point of making a mistake- and that in itself was a mistake. Never had any nerve to lose.) Burnside. Etc. An excellent strategy, IMO. -------------------------- It was the same strategy employed during the French and Indian War via the St. Lawrence river.
Etc. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at May 26, 2020 12:11 PM (YaiCw) One of my favorite quotes from that era came from the Battle of Chickamauga, Gen'l Rosecrans in command. Lincoln had sent down a special observer of his own to accompany the General, who's job was just to report personally to Lincoln how things were being conducted. He wound up being an eyewitness to one of the greatest Federal Military Disasters of the war, when a mistake by Rosecrans and his subordinates allowed a gap to open in their line, which Longstreet and the rest of the Confederate army poured through, routing the Federal troops. As the scope of the disaster became apparent, Rosecrans completely fell apart, and in his notes to Lincoln, the observer said "He wandered about like a Duck that has been hit on the head." He became so useless that his staff just bundled him off, and it was left to General Thomas to reform what was left of the command, and salvage what he could from the situation. (which he did quite masterfully) Up until that day, Rosecrans had been one of the brightest young "rising stars" on the Federal side. Posted by: Tom Servo at May 26, 2020 12:23 PM (Kpl3J) 471

Grant was not fixated on " one decisive battle", it seems. In modern times, I believe there has been a doctrine of destroying the enemies ability to wage war as the path to victory. Posted by: tubal at May 26, 2020 12:11 PM (bCLt0) Indeed. I've often thought that Grant could be considered the first of the modern generals, where the individual battles didn't matter as much as the campaign as a whole. The Overland Campaign is interesting in that Grant lost virtually every battle, and yet the campaign pretty much won the war for the Union. I hadn't thought about it before, but the mention of Forrest got me thinking that Grant was basically taking Forrest's quip about "keep up the skeer" and applying it on a strategic level rather than Forrest's original focus on the tactical, battlefield level. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Free WA, Buy Ammo at May 26, 2020 12:21 PM (l4C/z) I agree with you. Thomas' big problem was that he died early (1867, I think) and in the battle of the memoirs, Sherman was able to spend the next 20 years taking credit for everything Thomas had done. 1866 - 1890 or so was a fascinating literary period, as all of the surviving players wrote up their personal accounts in books and journals, with different opinions on who was and wasn't responsible for certain losses and victories. The conflicts were quite bitter, and part of the reason why, 20 years later, Sherman considered men like Longstreet and Joe Johnston (both top CSA generals) close personal friends, while many of the surviving federal generals hated him, and vice versa. One of the saddest facts of my personal quest of knowledge is I had no idea of the thing called the "Holodomor" until about 10 years ago (I'm 35 years past high school). That such a tragedy was hidden and remains largely hidden is the legacy of the Times and the public school "education" system, to which I will include the college system. I graduated with "honors" in HS and obtained an engineering degree and never once heard of Stalin's deliberate starvation of the Ukrainians. We heard and hear endlessly of the 6,000,000 Jews killed in the Holocaust, but between 10 and 20 million were starved to death and not a peep. All because, Stalin was bad (kinda) but his intentions were pure. Or something.
