First-World Problems...Part שבע

The faint clunk of the one-way valve on one of my sump pumps is maddening! There are two pumps in the basement, and one is silent when I test it. But the main pump thumps (loudly when next to it) when the valve closes at the end of a pump cycle. I have some theories, but the one that makes the most sense (or is the least stupid) is that the PVC running to the quite pump is at an angle, and the velocity of the water hitting the valve is lower than the other pump, which has a vertical PVC pipe.

Oh...why two pumps? Well, the main one runs off of house current, and the second one, which is set to turn on at a slightly higher water level, runs on two marine deep-discharge batteries fed through an inverter for 110V power. The typical auxiliary pumps are 12V pumps designed for short-term use, but I get a lot of water in my basement, and if we lose power for any length of time those cheap pumps won't be able to handle it.

What's that? Yup...both pumps are American made, because the previous two failed. And for extra credit, guess where those were made...

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at May 10, 2020 02:29 PM (cuKeo)

25 Ah, sump pumps...

In the long ago days of marriage we had an 1871 house with a dirt floor basement. No basement door, a floor hatch to the steps.

One day my wife said hey Bander the heat's not working, can you figure out why? I opened the hatch and found that the reason was three feet of water in the basement and the heater was flooded.

With waders and a flashlight I discovered that we had a natural spring which entered the basement under the stairs where there was a sump pump which had failed. Important detail, wished I'd known that.

All the vinyl albums and whatever other tchotchkes were down there were lost.

Variation on the "canoe accident" ploy, comrade?

Posted by: comrade banned relic curious at May 10, 2020 02:35 PM (QSMM4)

49 Well, we live in an area that was called, for the longest time, The Black Swamp.

Dad and I, and most of his family before me, were in the business of digging other people's foundations and basements. Often we were in the business of saving their foundations and basements. It always seemed to us like, around here anyway, a house was more or less floating in mud. The only question was whether it was a raft or deep-draft.

So, if you needed a pump to keep your house from sinking, you had chosen your home site poorly. My house is fairly big, but the basement such as it is, is just big enough for the water meter cavity and a cleanout on the bottom of the soil stack. The other house on the property has a cellar, with a stone-and-crockery water pickup under it leading down the sanitary, and when the trap on that failed I still had to pump out a couple of times. It's fixed now, but I have to run a cleanout down the sanitary every year or two for tree roots, and the city would love to have me install a sump pump so whatever water finds its way in can be pumped out into the yard.

This sounds like the dumbest goddam thing I've ever heard, if I do say so myself. Where do The Engineers think that water is going to go?

57 There's a rumor running around on the internet about IPC codes having country of origin embedded in the first 3 digits of the code.

Unfortunately, that isn't true. The first 3 digits DO reveal the company's country claimed, but

as you probably know, many companies set up subsidiaries in other countries. And if the product is distributed/labeled by that subsidiary, the IPC code would indicate that company origin only.

For example, I looked at the IPC code on a bottle of vitamin D3 in my cabinet. First 3 digits are 058, which indicates a company origin other than the US (000) or China (690s).

Yet the label identifies the product is made in China and US. Yeah, the D3 is made in China, packaged in the US is my guess.

Sigh. It's gonna be a loooong unwind from them fuckers.

134 My bitch: Doctrinaire Austrians and libertarians (not the weeditarians or the I hate all authority so I will scream at the meter maid people, but people with actual theories and examples) have this thing for free trade, and consider having China make things for the US at dumping level of prices is not an issue. In a strict Marginal Utility sense this is correct, as it allows the US to focus on things that are more valuable than geegaws like pressed potmetal consumer products.

However, two issues come to me along with historical references. It allows foreign interests who may not have your best interests at heart control an industry which could be used to influence your life.
Spain and Russia were late in developing a Iron cannon industry. As it was at the time, the English, the Netherlanders, and the Swedes were the cannon manufacturers of Europe.
Spain and Russia couldn't get an industry started through a number of cultural and political reasons: jailing heretics (most cannon casting experts were protestant, not Catholic or Orthodox), Political in that Spain and Russia were fighting everyone including the countries that could cast decent cannon, social in that the infrastructure for large scale founding has a need for a social outlook that was alien to both countries that were on the whole land-owning and agricultural, and Political in that vested interests did not want to allow the power that came along with casting cannot be be given to any other group, and they were not interested in casting cannon themselves since they bought them from other countries.

In the end, Russia spent a good 50 years developing the Tula arsenal that made good guns, domestically, and the Spanish just kept buying cannon because it made better economic sense up until they lost a lot of their overseas market in silver and gold, got embargoed by everyone they could buy cannon from and eventually lost the fight for the Netherlands, and had to try to start founding cannon anyways.

In short, "natural comparative advantages are generally engineered, not
discovered" so although plumping for bringing manufacturing home may
exclude other economic pursuits, every choice in life prevents other
decisions. That is what life (and economics) is all about. And making a decision does not mean you won't have to stop and do something else, anyways.

the second is a very libertarian point of view: even if we concede that the Chinese workers are making better money that they ever could working for strictly domestic products, part of the work force are slaves. And we don't know what part of the production we get is made by slaves and what part is by workers held at their jobs merely by no other viable economic option. So, the best thing to do is refuse to have commerce with slave holding countries until they can prove not to hold slaves for manufacturing.
As far as I can tell, that is how things are supposed to work.

We are. Fracking and oil sands and US production that was never ramped up because of cheap OPEC oil and the belief that we had other things to do with the funds that it would take to ramp them up.

Slavery at its base is a POLITICAL phenomenon. It takes a society to enforce it. That was the whole point of the Fugitive Slave Act and associated legislation, and the reason why it was actively nullified by states like Wisconsin.

247 Could be a kind of air hammer.

Most pumps pump until they lose suction but when they shut off there's still some water in the plumbing/pump.

When it shuts off that water goes back where it was pumped from slamming any one way valves and/or creating a bang when the water slams into the air that now occupies the plumbing/pump parts previous.

The one pump may not do that because it's different? Are they identical? Is the piping to and from identical?

Air hammer is cause by air being trapped in the plumbing and when water runs into it under any kind of pressure t compresses the air and then rebounds causing a vibration that we hear as a bang. Or pop or shriek.

The sound and the loudness depends on the amount of water and air and the plumbing size and routing.

Air hammer has driven many a plumber nuts. Or nutsier.

280 not sure we ever came to an official AoS conclusion, but talking or singing will produce more of a mist ... a mist is what carries the virus (of an infected/contagious person). So a mask would catch a lot from the infected person. It would limit the amount of inoculate he would breathe/sneeze onto the merchandise as well. (and dosage matters, which is why "continuous" exposure is more dangerous)

On defense, a mask could catch water particles (carrying a virus) if an infected person sneezed in the vicinity, but the eyes and the rest are not protected.

Maybe masks help, but are not of course 100%. But over time, we all need to get it, so herd immunity is developed. AND the social cohesion breakdown from everyone wearing a mask and living in social distance is not so good either, even deadly over time.

303 Just had a guy from our Farmer's Market drive by and gave us some red romaine lettuce. Said it was slow day and he was giving his produce away. I guess a drive-thru market on Mother's day was not good for business.

He was optimistic, though. Said next week people could start getting out of their cars to shop. I gave him a sawbuck.

309 Seven second pump run-time then a bit less than one second to the thump.

Yes, I am a bit obsessed.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo

You get an answer up thread yet? I had one that the upper shaft bushing had broken (plastic, don't ask) and the runtime would be almost the same before the impeller loaded up with water and the whole unit would wobble in its frame with a clunk.

If the check valve is integral to the unit, but you can inspect it by removing the pump from the PVC pipe, (phrasing)]/b], probe it with small dowel to verify that valve move and operate freely.

Hold the pump and trip the switch that turns it on. Rotate the unit around and see if you can replicate the clunk - this would indicate a bushing / shaft problem like I had.

312 Ironically (or coincidentally), we're narrowing down a list of laptops to buy, and the final question brought up by my kid was if the model was not made in China.

This gets a little convoluted as I know the components themselves are manufactured in various nations while the final assembly may be done at a hub, for example, in China. I guess my loyalty would be to the brand, i.e., HP vs Lenovo, as the profits would be directed toward a shareholder vs the PLA.

Oh I know what's happening. Some Boomer teaching "Journalism 101" uses the Watergate scandal as a teaching tool/example of some kind.

And all the little robots absorb the lesson and etch it in their programming. Never to be erased.

I'd bet that everyone of those who do it, think they're being clever because the bastards don't read anybody else's news/articles.

It's like the guy named Richard Little getting Tiny Dick jokes all his life. And every damn one of them thinks they're being an original wit.

One of the reason I like WalMart's labeling. It looks like is derived from window stickers in the auto industry.

"Assembled in" != "Assembled in and made from mostly" != "Assembled in and made from entirely"

I think they can stamp "Made in the USA" for products assembled here out of entirely foreign parts (or "Made in the USA of imported components" or some such). I like the labeling of assembly + parts content.

337 While its all well and good to buy made in America, to me its not going to take off on any kind of scale. Like a gnat on an elephants ass. (Not to be confused with the horrific murder rape elephant gnat swimming over from asia right now.)

The best way to buy American, would be a 25% tarrif on anything NOT American. Then you dont have to sit there and study every god damn thing you buy.

340 Quiet check valve - Made in the USA
Either PVC union style or rubber coupler style with worm clamps
Better to use pvc union style, much more rigid and long term safer
Clamp all discharge piping above the silent check valve with insulated 'strut' clamp hardware
45 degree elbows whenever possible, sch 40( deep socket) for outlet line.
Pump should have air bleed hole in casting, if not drill 1/8" hole in discharge pipe well below floor line, with a slight angle down.
Don't rush it

On the other end of the pump scale, I've got a submersible well pump that's been going for about 40 years now with not a single problem.

I'm going to drill another well for the new house for Miley and me, and I hope the new pumps will be as reliable as they were back then.

I've got three phase at my shop, and I'm going to put the pump nearby and use a 3-phase motor for it.

With wells, you have to wait to find out what capacity you're gonna get it. If I get enough capacity, I'm going to put a big boy in, and have a big expansion tank.

343 Skip ... Even if you end up buying a new pair of scissors (while waiting for the craft stores to reopen), I thought it worth mentioning that Joann's offers in-house sharpening every couple of months. Items can be dropped off up to 6 days ahead of the event, picked up later, and fees vary depending on the tool (knives, scissors, shears, even mower blades). I recently had my food scissors done for $8, which was worth every penny.

349 "Pump Thump"?
Is it like "pipe-hammer' in ordinary water pipes when taps are turned off suddenly?
One "solution" I have seen involves an "expansion chamber" branching vertically from the feed line. The "branch" is air-filled and acts as a compressible "buffer". It seems to work on a problem increasingly common with the large-scale uptake of short-throw taps with ceramic 'seals".
