APRIL 7--A Florida Woman is facing a felony domestic battery charge after allegedly clobbering a man with a can of SpaghettiOs, a blow that left the victim with a large laceration on his head, cops say. According to an arrest affidavit, the victim told police that after arriving “home from the hospital” Saturday afternoon he got into a verbal argument with Shadae Miranda. The victim and Miranda, 30, were sharing a room at a Travel Inn motel in Fort Pierce. The affidavit, released by police, has the victim’s name redacted as well as details of what prompted the couple’s fight. The man told cops that he sought to deescalate the situation by gathering some of his belongings and stepping outside the room, where he ended up sitting in a lawn chair. Miranda, cops allege, began striking the victim while he was still inside the room.

I'm going to be honest here - I never look in the mirror unless it is absolutely necessary (shaving), because I can't stand to look at myself.
And as far as "being a jerk," I always went with the proposition that the people you hate the most are the ones who have your own worst traits and reflect them back at you. I don't quite remember where I read that, but I find it tends to be accurate.

I have to force myself to pay attention. Most of my work (even in the office) is on conference calls because my mega-corp has people scattered all over the place. Everything is all online now, of course, but that just means for me that the final 15% of my interactions are now online.
But boy do I hate video conferences. I don't even have a usable webcam (not mandatory at my company) but I get some serious uncanny valley problems when everyone in the meeting is in different lighting, different settings, etc. It's all just ... ersatz.

We are geezers but we have a hard time getting out at geezer hours when the trucks come in. So our expectations were low. We were not, therefore, disappointed.
Walgreen's? Nope. CVS? Nope. Big Lots? Nope. The grocery downtown? Milady was allowed in but not me (1 per cart they said), and separate entrances and exits. I tried to tell Enforcer Girl that her mask was supposed to go over her nose, but she didn't get it and just told me next week everybody will have to wear a mask to even go in.
Oklahoma voted to allow the liquor stores to be open 'til ten pm. We went by our regular guy's, but he was already closed at just past 8. We went to the other store. They had a drive up window, or you could honk and someone would come take your order. No one allowed in. And of course they got the order wrong.
This madness seems to be accelerating. Much of this was City Ordinance. I don't think any of it is State. Some was panicked businesses adding their own crazy touches.
We dropped by daughter's, and scored some chile verde still being offered by the restaurant where she worked. And a pack of TP. Good thing. We were down to our last roll.

I have a project manager who admitted to me once that he just loves meetings. Loves them. They "energize" him. All of his meetings run long, sometimes by as much as an hour. He has more meetings than any other PM I've ever worked with in 25 years.

This is a solved problem, at least for men, but as with many things currently we've regressed.
Apparently there is a core group of assholes out there that will buy whatever pants have a smaller number instead of the ones that are accurate so manufacturers are rewarded for vanity sizing.

I really liked it, but it wasn't practical when I moved back to Michigan, about a mile and a half from work. That's not enough time to warm up, even in the summer, and it really didn't like winter.
Driving it back from the port of Los Angeles to Michigan was fun, though. I was getting something like 50mpg and it just wanted to keep going forever.

Now I want to bring up the issue of signal to noise issues in anecdotal studies. If a study shows roughly as many negative results as positive, the signal to noise ratio in the study is very low and it is unlikely that the treatment being studied is clinically effective. Most of the huge advances in medicine over history have come not from formal double blind studies, but rather from anecdotal studies. For example the small pox vaccine, hand washing before surgery, the treatment for scurvy, and aspirin to name but a few.
Nobody has ever run a double blind study on the proposition that looking both ways before crossing the street improves your chance of surviving the crossing. The evidence of that obvious truth is purely anecdotal in nature. A scientist rejects anecdotal evidence at his own peril.

Yes. They got into the crawl space under my front porch a few years ago. Tried to interest local beekeepers into coming to fetch them. No sale. They were worried about introducing the Varroa Mite to their hives.
Finally, a beekeeper from Edmonton told me, "Don't beat yourself up about it; just zap 'em with insecticide and be done with it. They are doomed to die, anyway, since they swarmed too late in the season, and will not be able to put up enough honey to winter over."
Call a local beekeper. If he/she comes to get them, well you saved their lives. If they turn you down, get a can of Permethrin.

Nah, not everybody. My neighbor asked me today if my son-in-law (who does a lot of handyman stuff for us) would be able to use his pole saw to trim some moderate-sized branches off a pine tree in his back yard. He has some carpal tunnel issues and couldn't manage it by himself. I looked at what he had in mind and figured I could do the job in about 15-20 minutes with my hand pruning saw. So together we got 'er done. He and his wife then popped a couple beers and we sat on the patio and visited for a while, maintaining our distance of course. They sent me home with a six pack. (He owns a bar & grill in town here.)
Because that's what neighbors should do.

OK, I just read the Wikipedia article on Topsy. I suppose it could have been edited by an Edison fanboi, but it seems Topsy was being put to death regardless, and mutliple methods were used, though it was determined that the electrocution was what actually killed her.

Prior to the advent of high voltages, there was no term for 'death by electricity', or as we say today, 'electrocution'. Edison suggested the term 'Westinghoused'.
As an aside, the world, last week, lost one of the foremost authorities regarding Edison products, Greg Bogantz. Aside from being one of the finest engineers I've ever known, he was a walking encyclopedia of things Edison, down to the finest detail.

The AC vs DC, Tesla vs. Edison, war was an epic one. Edison helped lobby for electrocution as an execution method. He wanted a Westinghouse generator to be used, to further associated AC and Westinghouse with death.
Read about the first electrocution. It was in NYC. Westinghouse wouldn't sell them a generator, so they had to sneak and buy one second hand, hiding the true purpose for the machine.
And it was a botch. They had a belt drive, and the belt slipped when the threw the switch, bogging the output done.
They ended up char-broiling the prisoner (condemned for killing his wife, IIRC) and the smell that filled the room made the witnesses sick.
It was a gruesome thing.

The reason AC is more dangerous than DC, relatively speaking is the frequency. The utilization range 50 - 60Hz happens to be a sweet spot for causing the most muscle disturbances to the human body.
In the AC vs DC war, AC won out, because it was indeed superior. The main reason is transformers, which allowed long distance transmission, and economies of scale.
Now, thanks to the solid state (and solid state at high current and power levels, with high voltage capability) technology of modernity, long distance DC transmission is feasible, and cheaper.
The break-even point was around 500 miles or so, maybe a little better the last I saw.

While perhaps true, the fact remains that to achieve a given RMS voltage using AC, requires a peak voltage that is 1.414 times higher than a given DC voltage. That is a lot.
A DC voltage that cannot be felt, or at least would not be lethal, becomes lethal when the equivalent RMS AC voltage is applied. That was Edison's point.

If you're interested in the details, there are several steps, with different voltages used. The idea is to kill quickly, bit with minimal heating and gruesome effects of burning skin, and bursting tissue.
They hit the prisoner with about 2000V (some use higher for the first phase. About 7 to 12A of current flows. This is supposed to stop the heart and kill the brain.
Then the voltage is lowered and a slow fry cycle of various voltages is used. They want to make sure to kill all organs in the body.
Body temperature will reach 200F or better. You do not want to boil it. Things get splody, then.

Topsy the circus elephant had trampled and killed one of her keepers, and was scheduled to be put down in any case. Edison arranged to do the deed with AC electricity as a stunt to show how "dangerous" it was. The poor beast was basically cooked to death.
And the irony of it all is the DC is by far more dangerous as a shock hazard than AC. Involuntary muscle contractions can throw you off an AC source during phase reversals. On a DC source, you get glommed onto it.

I've got a table in one of my electrical references that compares DC, 60Hz, and 100kHz currents. The tables are based on currents, although higher voltage gives higher current.
The differences between DC and 60Hz AC are stark. The threshold of feeling is 1mA for DC, and about 0.4mA for 60Hz. For 100kHz, it's 7mA.
Threshold of pain is 5mA DC, and 1.1mA 60Hz. It's 12mA for 100kHz.
Thresholds for lose of control, unable to let go due to muscle contraction is 76mA for DC, and just 16mA for 60Hz. 100KHz is about the same as DC for this and more severe effects.

Interestingly, the thresholds for women and men are very different. The thresholds for women are on average about 65% of the level for men.
So electricity hits women harder. Sexist. Wonder what the tranny thresholds are?

It deals with an entire Battalion of mechanized equipment stashed in various mines in the desert just after Japan and Pearl Harbor....George thought the west coast was next and wanted a "reserve stashed away" just in case.
After that was done...the Major in charge of the whole operation suddenly died and because of certain Op-SEC requirements, had not transferred his on site coordinates onto topo maps.......and the locations remain lost to this day........

The first time I got a good DC shock, I didn't even realize what it was, it feels so different than 60Hz. I had a computer power supply where the standby power circuit had failed, and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with it (turned out to be bad Chicom capacitors on the mo/bo -- would burn up the standby --- too much current, but not enough to blow the fuses)
Well, some of those have hot heat sinks. I accidentally touched one with my arm near the wrist, and was grounded elsewhere.

Nope, it was the DC. I think the input stages are voltage doubled (for 120VAC) input, so we're talking 250VDC or something around there.
I have felt 277VAC, hot to ground on 480Y systems, and that was far, far worse.

The SELV standard reflects this. I.e., 50 VAC is regarded as the highest non-lethal AC voltage, vs. 120V DC. Obviously, the DC line can transfer more energy than the 50 VAC line.
Thus, more work can be done by DC, safely, than AC. Which, again, was the argument being made by Edison.

So today, I hung up a couple of tarps on the porch rails to make a fort for the girl and the neighbor girl. They decorated and played in it for awhile while I stopped paying attention and worked.
Eventually they come in and ask for help - with the shopping park they retrieved from the creekbed a block away, but couldn't get up the stairs. I laughed, and complied. They proceeded to load it up with stuffed animals for their "Unicorn Hunt."
Later they came back and lazed around in the "fort."
I thought everything was fine, delightful even, until Lady YD came out and flipped her lid.
She said "I have two dirty kids under a couple of tarps with a Dollar Tree shopping cart. They look like Capitol Hill street kids are living on my porch!"

And tying that up with the desert, and armor, "Sahara" was shot out in Anza-Borrego, I think. There are some actual dune areas there.
Which reminds me - where were the Planet of the Apes desert scenes (and ending beach scene), and the Star Trek "Gorn" scenes shot? Close to LA I'm sure.
Due to cost and time, I suppose, a tremendous % of TV and movie scenes are shot in the LA area or just beyond. Despite it's scenic nature and identical weather, San Diego hasn't been the location for many movies, just 100 miles away. Some Like It Hot, to use the Hotel Del, is the most famous I suppose.

So, I set aside house repairs for the balance of the day, and played with the Studebaker Lark instead. Got an air cleaner assembly flanged up to the carburetor, and that is working well. Put my new tab on the licence plate, and fixed the buggered-up trunk lock hole, and installed a good used trunk lock into it. Had to weld a short extension onto the release finger of the trunk latch so that the eccentric on the lock could engage it, but that worked out fine, and now the trunk unlocks with a key, as it should. Took the Lark for a pin, and went to the bank, and to Lowes, and hit Big Lots for some groceries. Car ran fine.

I clearly recall after 9/11, the big memorial service at the National Cathedral (I lived a few blocks away). Friday, I think. Tuesday was the attack.
Just after the thing was over, I was heartened by a friend's phone call - he was livid and beside himself at the f***ing mourning and whining and self-important drama, and wanted to hear about action, not sorrow. Many directly/indirectly involved felt the same way. I laughed.
This situation is fairly different, of course.
But when I hear another snippet of drama and emo crap about "these challenging times", I snicker (to myself).

Fun to drive to places that in recent years have become overwhelmed by traffic - and sail right through. In the middle of the day. Picked up tomato seedlings today.
Saw gas for $2.69 today. Finally, the evil $3 barrier is broken. Of course without the Stupidity Tax (CA voters and the cretins they put in charge), it would be much cheaper. But still, a small victory to see that barrier broken.

Recall reading an article about it a long time time ago, some big movie shoot.
The film company apparently hadn't fully briefed the municipal people, so, when they took breaks, the city people would come in and clean up the areas being used for the shoot - they had had to "dirty up" these areas with trash and fake graffitti to make it like NYC.
Then the crew would return - and their locations were "ruined" - they'd been returned to their normal, clean, Canadian state. They'd had to trash them up again.
One of the most hilarious, and illustrative, stories I can recall. Canada, gotta love it.

Heh. Agreed that Toronto is probably the most-used stand-in for NYC. But Vancouver has quite a movie industry in its own right, And it has its share of gritty downtown back alleys, and streets of genteel-ly decaying old craftsman-style homes. Not so much, anymore, though, as those are rapidly being torn down and replaced with "Vancouver Specials", big-ass duplexes and fourplexes on a 33 or 45 foot lot. You can't go home again.

Reps should be limited to 8 Years like the President (4 election cycles). The Constitution should also contain strict limits on being a lobbyist after serving - as in - NO you can never be a lobbyist after serving as an elected or appointed member of the Fed Government. Ever. Period. Full stop. What's that? How will you make a living? Well there Sonny/Missy - just obey my rule #1 - and have a f*cking business, trade or career BEFORE serving so you understand the citizens you are representing. Don't got one? One man infected 16 others which seeded the outbreaks in Chicago but displayed only mild symptoms himself. Thought he had a cold.
Superspreaders are now thought to play a big role in outbreak dynamics. For whatever reason, due to a bunch of factors, these individuals are very efficient at spreading the disease, and go way beyond the normal R0 of the disease.

I just can't believe how staggeringly ignorant people are, not just about the Constitution and other basic civics...but about EVERYTHING. People that I've known for years are posting the most ridiculous "stories"...insultingly stupid, like how they are stepping over dead bodies in Central Park and why are so many people outside when they know they will kill grandpa, the government should be seizing property without compensation, anyone outside without "permission" should be arrested or shot.
They say this is a life-changing event, and it certainly is. I'm certainly looking at most of my acquaintances and friends in a whole new light. And staying the hell off of Facebook.

Some environments are not healthy. I don't think our gvt environment is healthy. Even when a healthy individual goes into that environment, they will likely get some contamination and so they shouldn't stay long in that environment. Terms limits would help limit their exposure.

Many factors, but the main one is cost of living and jobs.
NE and left coast are two damn expensive so the outflow is to the southern states and Texas, where its much less expensive.
Also per FBI crime stats, the south and Texas are by far more racially tolerant than the North and West Coast.

My guess is that the CDC got snooker with AIDS and Hep C in that Docs covered it up. I saw it many times at Parkland in late 80s. Because when they does go back and get blood samples collected during that time instead off looking at every sample they only have to look at the one with Kung Flu.
In Texas Kung Flu is not even hitting 10% at test to positive rate. The seasonal flu averages about 25% positive rate during the season.

The virus was kicking around and being spread as early as October.
It built up a large reservoir of carriers, then all hell breaks loose and the lock down begins.
But it's not a true lock down as people need to live, so they go out shopping and congregate and spread the virus who bring it back home.
But here's the kicker, the virus is a big nothing burger for most people comparing to the flu and it has significant lethality for the same cohorts who the flu has great lethallity to.
This was always a scam and people need to pay a serious price for this little bit of creative destruction.

So if you die from the flu you're going to be intubated and on a respirator just like Chinese Lung Viurus.

The flu doesn't kill 21% of people over 80 who contract it (9% for people in their 70s). And data from NY is showing that 80% of people put on ventilators die from COVID, while it's 40-50% for other respiratory conditions. It's legit to question the mitigation strategy, but it's clear by now that this is a very dangerous virus.
