When I was a TA at a large university, I was one of three Americans. Th other 10 were split between Indian and Chinese.
The course was required for a BS and 90% of the students were American. I gave lectures and worked problems on the board in a large lecture hall. I typically had 100 or more students attending even though there were about 30 or so actually registered. The students used to jam my class because they couldn't understand the other TAs who spoke very poor English with huge accents. The university actually dragged it's feet when it came time to give me a Reserch project for my PhD because there was such a problem with the students ratings of the other TAs. I was too "valuable" to the department as a teacher to move to the labs. Sucked. Posted by: pawn at April 02, 2020 05:49 PM (wswmc) 193

Here's tip that I'm sharing online only because I have lots of TP: check gas stations with small grocery areas. I was in one yesterday and checked out of curiosity. They had plenty of TP stocked on the shelves - because under normal circumstances nobody thinks to buy TP when they're filling up their cars. Of course, I'm sure you'll pay more for it there because buying grocery items at a gas station is always more expensive. But hey, that's better than driving to 3 or 4 supermarkets and finding no TP there.

There is apparently very little overlap, so when the retail supply got overrun (since folks are at home, not using the facilities at restaurants, stores, etc) there's an oversupply of commercial, and no easy way to swap things out. Went to Walmart to get some food. I haven't seen TP there in at least 3 weeks so I stopped even checking. Walking through the store, passing the empty TP shelves, suddenly a pallet full of TP rolled by and the employee asked me if I wanted any. I was not expecting TP so it didn't even register what he had and I just said "no thanks" and kept walking. A couple minutes later I finally "got it" and ran back, snagging a pack just before the piranahs finished it. Posted by: StuckInCalifornia at April 02, 2020 06:15 PM (a74KK) 400

Our son was diagnosed with throat cancer last month.
He is having exploratory surgery tomorrow, and spent all day on the phone with insurance, in a futile effort to find if his deductible had been met. He has been working from home since mid-March, b/c he's immuno-supressed. His extra jobs were in entertainment, which was also shut down in the first wave of non-essentials. His boss just called to say that he'd been put on furlough. He doesn't know how that will affect his insurance. He understands that HR is probably slammed, which is why he can't get through to them. We can't be with him because we're not in the same town, we're 65+, and he's immuno-suppressed. When I think of his situation, and multiply it by the thousands of others like us across the country, as someone said earlier: incandescent with anger. We have done what we can: we are able to help with the finances, his sister is taking care of the medical side of things, providing food and transportation. Compared to others, we are very blessed. The downside is less than catastrophic, but MAYBE bad enough to merit this action, until they find the models are wrong. But they have more and more successful HCQ results, yet they will not put that in the models that are full of conjecture (but only downside risk conjecture).
Posted by: illiniwek at April 02, 2020 06:21 PM (Cus5s) The hydroxychloroquine results are notional at this point. Look at how many peoplehere think Zn(II) is the key. That's a cut above wearing an onion on your belt. The models are doubtless dodgy. No question about that. But dodginess cuts two ways: the models might be UNDERESTIMATING the death rate, as well as overestimating it. We just don't know. Suppose Trump & Co. laugh off dire predictions, but that then come true, and 10% of the population dies. Sound high? Black Death killed about 30% in the Middle Ages. We just don't know how bad it COULD be. Under those circumstances, prudence is called for. I've often said that any problem that can be solved with money is not a very big problem. "Suppose Trump Co. laugh off dire predictions, but that then come true, and 10% of the population dies."
weeks ago I blindly estimated the over/under (or just mid range results I expected) of 14,000 deaths ... based on known data from S Korea and some other places. The HCQ was already in my thinking, since they were suggesting it. France and others improved it by adding the Z-pak ... and there are many results. We mostly know that ~20% of those are infected may have more serious effects, and maybe half those need icu. That is without the known effective HCQ cocktail given early for the vulnerable population. I haven't seen anyone suggest this could morph into a 10% of total population killer. There are many doctors now pushing their results of HCQ, and as Sexton said, hospitals are telling their doctors not to talk about it. wtf is going on? I think it is mostly political (the silencing of the HCQ results, not the pandemic itself) They are not sure yet how HCQ works yet, are they? the one notion said it helps get zinc in the cell, which (I forget details) blocks the virus from replicating. The other notion I heard is it affects cell pH, and stops/slows virus replication that way. idk, just taking zinc won't do it, and most people probably have enough zinc, just needs a way into the cells. Rant on "Viruses Don't Know Borders"
Viruses aren't intelligent. Thus the entire universe of knowable things is the universe of things viruses don't know. Anything that can be said about everything is analytically null. There must be a mistake in your logical process to specify as it if were a significant case when citing an analytically null principle. Viruses don't know where I live, but I understand I need to stay there. Viruses don't know where I work or where I shop. They don't know where I get "non-essential services", but I can't go there. To think that there is any content in "Viruses don't know who's Chinese" or "Viruses don't know borders" is to not know that you are saying something analytically inert. I haven't seen anyone suggest this could morph into a 10% of total population killer. There are many doctors now pushing their results of HCQ, and as Sexton said, hospitals are telling their doctors not to talk about it. wtf is going on? I think it is mostly political (the silencing of the HCQ results, not the pandemic itself)
They are not sure yet how HCQ works yet, are they? the one notion said it helps get zinc in the cell, which (I forget details) blocks the virus from replicating. The other notion I heard is it affects cell pH, and stops/slows virus replication that way. idk, just taking zinc won't do it, and most people probably have enough zinc, just needs a way into the cells. Posted by: illiniwek at April 02, 2020 06:39 PM (Cus5s) I haven't seen anyone suggest this could morph into a 10% of total population killer. June 1918: Did anyone suggest that an influenza epidemic could kill millions and millions of people? No. June 2019: I didn't see anyone suggest there could an corona virus pandemic now. We simply do not know what could have happened. It's grossly dishonest intellectually to critique decisions with the benefit of hindsight. They are not sure yet how HCQ works yet, are they? the one notion said it helps get zinc in the cell, which (I forget details) blocks the virus from replicating. The other notion I heard is it affects cell pH, and stops/slows virus replication that way. Let's cut to the chase. Pondering how hydroxychloroquine works is a classic example of begging the question. We don't know for sure that it DOES work. Doctors are not scientists, and are playing their hunches, based on clinical observations, and God love 'em for. But that's it. Not so long ago, based on clinical observations, they thought leeches were useful in rebalancing humors. More recently, physicians essentially unanimously agreed that ulcers resulted from excess stomach acid, and scoffed at the notion that they resulted from a bacterial infection. Bottom line: without scientific studies, we're playing hunches. Period. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 02, 2020 06:54 PM (YqDXo) 673

________________ When I saw that headline the other day about how so many on the ship were sick, I wondered if somebody would get fired for allowing that kind of information to get out in the public. Presumably the readiness of our forces, or their lack of readiness, is not supposed to be broadcast to our enemies. So not really surprised by this.
