FDA Approves First Serology Test for Coronavirus, Which Can Detect If You've Previously Been Exposed to Wuhan Flu

If you were previously exposed to it, but are now free of it, you wouldn't have the virus in you, but you would still have the antibodies your body produced to fight it.

I guess this would be important because... I don't know, if a doctor knew he'd already been exposed but beat the flu, he could work the ICUs without worrying too much about his health?

And I guess if you knew you'd already had it, you could de-isolate.

But that assumes you can only get the bug once, which I believe there's still some doubt about.

I know they're talking about farming the antibodies from healthy people who've beat the flu so they can inject them into the sickly. I dunno, is this a needed first step for that?

Seems like good news. To me, at least. But I'm not one of those Instant Experts in Epidemiology as you see have proliferated like crazy on Twitter.

A lot of people read five tweets and skim a Wikipedia article's first paragraph (the one written for complete noobs) and then start pontificating on Twitter about their current theories about the virus.

Like MSNBC host Chris Hayes, who used his nonexistent expertise in genetics and viruses (I doubt he's even taken a science class, apart from "The Science of Global Warming" sophomore year) to decide that the theory that the Wuhan flu was made in a lab is false:

chrishayesgenticsexpert

I share his skepticism about that theory. But, unlike Chris Hayes, I did not get a degree in viral genetic reproduction and recombination on Twitter University this past week, so I can only couch my hunch as a, well, hunch.

Chris Hayes apparently checked all the genes and found they were 100% organic, grass-fed and pasture-raised.

If only I had his beakers and erlenmeyer flasks....

More:

27 I will put out again what I think is coming as this serology test is part of it:

- red/yellow/green zones with different rules for each
- interzone travel restrictions
- continued restrictions for 60yo+ (just a note MA had 33 deaths on April 1, 3 were
- public masking requirements
- antibody testing and reduced restrictions for the immune (probably some sort of marker like a wristband see Contagion)

Yes, I am saying we are going to become a "papers please" society.

I would think if you caught it and got over it, the antibodies prevent you from getting that particular virus again. Mutations notwithstanding. Just like flu where you have to get the shot every year.

"Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. Approximately 9pct of the world's population is affected annually, with up to 1 billion infections, 3 to 5 million severe cases, and 300,000 to 500,000 deaths each year.1-3

In the U.S. alone, nearly 20pct of the population is affected. On average, 25 to 50 million documented influenza cases, 225,000 hospitalizations, and ultimately more than 20,000 deaths occur every year.1,2,4-7"

Chinese Bat Virus gots a lot of catching up to do.

But as you say, they are going to destroy the global economy over something that may or may not be worse than the flu.

And it's looking more and more like it's not worse than the flu for most people.

81 It's also useful to track the actual historic spread of the disease, especially for cases where the doctors weren't yet aware of the bug. I suspect that Seattle, for example, will prove to have numerous cases found to be COVID going all the way to January. And if we ever get the Chinese gov't into a court over their deliberate efforts to spread the disease - such as the "hug someone from China" campaign, supposedly to demonstrate lack of racism - that data will be crucial.

105 But that assumes you can only get the bug once, which I believe there's still some doubt about.

********

As a general rule, once the body has mounted an immune response to an infectious agent, that info stays "on file" in the immune system so that if the body sees the same (or similar) bug in the future it has the blueprint on file and can gear up the response much quicker with subsequent exposures. This "institutional memory" does tend to fade with time. Generally getting the actual disease will trigger a stronger and longer lasting immune response than getting a vaccine with killed or attenuated virus.

Sort of the immune system's equivalent of faxing the police sketch of the bank robber to all the precincts so the patrol cops can recognize him if he comes around again.

Or the liquor store putting up a picture of the check kiter so the employees don't sell him any booze unless he pays cash.

Or Next Door posting pictures of that guy who lets his dog poop on everyone's yard without scooping.

Looking at the MA data - which is concisely put together - the reality does not look like what IHME projects.

It WAY overstates the case. Again, using the MA data, they have as of yesterday had a total of 682 hospitalized cases since this began. The IHME model for MA for April 01 says they need 3200+ beds.

That is off by a good bit.

To pick up my meds today:

Step 1: guard told me to stay outside the door until the guy before me was "processed"

Step 2: woman behind plexi glass at desk right inside the double doors entrance to the drug store. She asked me the same questions, are you sick, fever, have you traveled recently... Then squirted my hands (which had gloves on) with Purell or w/e.

Step 3: She told me to go ahead and distance from others.

The pharmacist was paranoid. They have plexi up already, but this time the keypad to the credit card machine was covered in plastic and she made me hold up other stuff I had to scan the barcodes. Young pretty girl.

168 First, when we talk about accuracy in the hospitalization and death tolls, it all depends on the denominator, and we have no way to know how many people may have had it without really knowing what they had. This would push the denominator up and the death rate down, quelling some of the panic. Second, if testing showed that say 50% of the area population already had it and got over it, we'd make progress on areas that could reopen for business as usual.

169 One thing chris hayes says is true, as far as i know:

Viruses are known to mutate. A LOT. They are very "sloppy" in their replication, I've heard scientists say. They are promiscuous about swapping out bits of their own code for anything they find in the wild.

So they're constantly changing. I think that's why every year's supposed flu vaccine is a shot in the dark -- it's a guess at what this year's flu mutations will look like. Sometimes it's a good guess, sometimes it's crap.

Plus: this thing is like 98% bat DNA. it's a disease that bats had, that turned out to be infectious to humans. We wouldn't have found that out, except that the Chinese love keeping live bats in their wet markets.

I just don't see the *need* for a lab to have made this. I get the sense that some people seem to think that something new and deadly couldn't just have arisen through mutation and must have been designed.

Posted by: ace at April 02, 2020 04:38 PM

I'm not sure what was annoying about my question. It is not rhetorical.

I have not gone to the doctor in 20 years. Not since I pulled a muscle in my shoulder in college.

I have also not had the flu in over 20 years and have not had the flu shot since 1994, when it was required for high school admittance.

I've been healthy with no symptoms. But I likely have been exposed to COVID-19 as I am in SE Michigan where COVID-19 seems to have spread.

But the orders from hospitals and such are to stay at home unless you're extremely sick.

So I ask again, who among this demographic of healthy people are they testing, since we are all ordered to stay home?

Am I missing something?

I was reading something about this the other day (and I'm not going to get it completely right). Depending on the type of virus, there are two ways they mutate. Viruses that are "multi-part" can swap parts, and mutate relatively easily. Viruses with only one part (which SARS-COV-2 is), can't swap parts like that. I forget the mechanism that causes them to mutate, but it a slower process, and the mutations are relatively minor.

207 Ace,there was an actual science-science study about the origins of this corona virus, and they entertain various theories, taking them seriously - -including the possibility that it was the result of human manipulation.

Their conclusion was that there was a less than 1% chance that it was the result of human manipulation, due to the rate of mutation, which can't really be simulated artificially.

They also concluded that it did not come directly from bats, but almost certainly starting from bats and then through an intermediate species, which almost certainly had to be the Malayan Pangolin.

Since Malayan Pangolins are the very subspecies of pangolin that is sold in the Wuhan "wet markets," alongside the very bats that have the original virus -- well, they concluded, there's about a 98% chance that the virus strain emerged exactly as everyone thinks it did.

The only surprising thing they concluded was that the transfer to human likely happened way back in October 2019 or ever earlier -- not in December. Again, the rate of mutation pointed to an earlier transfer. Oh also, another surprising thing: THe pangolin-to-hman transfer didn't happen just once, but probably multiple times over several months. Probably in one single disgusting endangered-species butcher's stall where they sold bats and pangolins in unsanitary conditions, and the butcher just kept getting the virus over and over until finally he caught a mutation that "stuck." And then we were off to the races.

I could try dig up the article -- might take a bit.

They've been caught stealing biological materials from the US and Canada for years. There were media stories in the past about the coronavirus research being done specifically at that lab. It doesn't have to be nefarious; shoddy Chinese quality control of research material is a far more likely scenario IMO, particularly when paired with the Chinese response.

Ace -What makes me suspicious is that the US has caught Chinese nationals traveling through an airport with live SARS MERS viruses in vials. 2018 in Detroit I believe is what I read.So this is either abject stupidity of the captured Chinese individuals, or there was some sort of intent here. Also, there is a pathogen lab in Wuhan -supposedly maximum security lab.
Granted correlation doesn't equal causation, but I think suspicions are warranted.

Tucker Carlson Airs Report Claiming Coronavirus 'Probably Originated From A Laboratory In Wuhan'

https://tinyurl.com/uq2dtrv

Carlson went on to cite the report -- which he conceded that he couldn't independently confirm or endorse -- noting that the information was at least worthy of consideration.

...

The report detailed the tracing of COVID-19 to the intermediate horseshoe bat -- a bat that they confirmed was not available at the Wuhan wet market and did not live locally. In fact, the report noted that native populations were no closer than 600 miles away from the first known cases, making a natural transmission from bat to human appear more unlikely.

The only place those particular bats existed locally was inside a research facility -- which was just several hundred yards from the Wuhan wet market -- and the paper's ultimate conclusion was that the coronavirus pandemic had likely been the result of a leak from the lab: "The killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan."

239 So I learned this from reading medical journals, not twitter: The body produces something called "mast cells" which hold antigens. They don't necessarily keep them stocked but will start building them up when threatened.

Sometimes the antigen dump is good, ie to kill off a threat or bad as in anaphylaxis.

There are things called anaphalactoids that don't produce antigen full mast cells but do cause them to dump.

Let's say you're allergic to shrimp. Your body builds up mast cells to fight shrimp but you don't have an allergic reaction. Then one day you eat shrimp twice plus take an aspirin (anaphalactoid) and boom, mast cells dump and you go into anaphylaxis.

That's why it's good to notice minor allergic responses, because sometimes those are a clue that you're building up antigen fat mast cells. One day they let go and you get an allergic reaction.

Maybe the people who were exposed have these mast cells full of antigens but didn't need them. Their body would use what it wanted. Their blood might be good for someone who needed the mast cells to open.

Idk much, but that's my surmising since I know about anaphalactoids.

252 From the study:

"Theories of SARS-CoV-2 origins
It is improbable that SARS-CoV-2 emerged through laboratory manipulation of a related SARS-CoV-like coronavirus. As noted above, the RBD of SARS-CoV-2 is optimized for binding to human ACE2 with an efficient solution different from those previously predicted7,11. Furthermore, if genetic manipulation had been performed, one of the several reverse-genetic systems available for betacoronaviruses would probably have been used19. However, the genetic data irrefutably show that SARS-CoV-2 is not derived from any previously used virus backbone20. Instead, we propose two scenarios that can plausibly explain the origin of SARS-CoV-2: (i) natural selection in an animal host before zoonotic transfer; and (ii) natural selection in humans following zoonotic transfer. They moved him to the hospital ward, then they pronounced him all better a week later.

One thing chris hayes says is true, as far as i know:

I'm no Chris Hayes, but that makes no sense to me at all.
Posted by: ace at April 02, 2020 04:45 PM

------------

The Chinese have been very, very aggressive about discovering new viruses in the real world.

I saw a statistic where there were only 2,400 known viruses in 2000, and then the Chinese made it a priority to find new viruses, and have discovered over 2,000 new viruses as of this year.

And a lot of those viruses they discovered were from bats.
Bats have some way of hosting thousands of viruses, but not succumbing to the diseases they host, like rabies.

I think this was a lab accident, not a bio weapon, but someone trying to isolate a virus, and being sloppy with it. Maybe they infected a couple of lab animals, and thinking the animals were clean, some guard or tech stupidly sold them for a few yuan, because they needed the money for booze and bimbos.

Alternatively, They may have been developing a bio weapon, but this is the intermediate product, human transmissible, aerosol transmissible, long incubation period, capable of being spread when asymptotic, the only thing missing was a higher fatality rate. Maybe they didn't get to that step before Comrade Jing got sick and infected his neighbors?

Something! Really caused Beijing to go apeshit in their response. Knowledge that it was from their bio labs would do that.

306 I'm actually helping a client with vaccine development but I am still somewhat ignorant as I am a modeler, not a doctor or biologist.

But my understanding is that they shouldn't be able to be reinfected by the *same* strain.

Maybe one of our medical folks can correct me if I am wrong.
Posted by: chique d'Epstein didn't off hisself at April 02, 2020 04:42 PM (9hauA)

Chique, getting reinfected comes from how long your body and immune system maintains antibodies to attack the virus/ disease entity.

Some diseases, such as tetanus, cause an immunity in humans that doctors believe lasts ten years. After that, a tetanus vaccine booster is warranted to rejuvenate immunity.

Some diseases confer lifetime immunity, such as measles and mumps.

Some viruses are simply controlled and kept in remission, yet continue to live in humans, such as oral herpes, which lives in the nerve ganglia and only becomes active when the immune system is occupied with working against another infection( the typical cold sore on the lip) .

The influenza virus is a problem as other's have mentioned because it has a great capacity to mutate and that mutation is not always recognized by the body.

We won't know at this point how long immunity lasts for Covid-19 for a number of years.

316 "Theories of SARS-CoV-2 origins
341 Recommendations for Ace's (and everyone else here) burnout on the WaHoo Communist Cooties Plannedemic.

After WWII while everyone but the US was sitting in a pile of smoldering rubble, the US kept its own factories that cranked out millions of tons of war materiel and returned to making dishwashers and automobiles while Japan began rebuilding their manufacturing empire - but this time leap-frogging the US by moving away from 1920s era manual labor to mechanization and eventually robotics. The US Unions prevented any advances as they were the neoLuddites.

The Enemy Within has gutted our manufacturing for decades now, leaving the united States as Europe and Japan after WW2. Now is the time to get rid of the regulations and the myriad of harassing entities that exist solely for discouraging American independence and forcing a dependence on China and Globalists.

On Jay Leno's Garage, there was an episode where he highlighted a guy who who democratized automobile design and using 3D printing technology was able to have a design-it-yourself car body built by the printer and then had the mechanical bits attached so that a running model was available in one man hour. What was even more fascinating is that the "factory" could be housed in as little as 1500 sq ft. This make it neighborhood sized.

One thing we should learn is that the Agenda 21 of squeezing everyone into hypercities so that they can be better monitored, controlled and exploited by our Ruling Elites is a recipe for high death count epidemics. We can now spread out and have community factories rather than having a huge central location that requires 10s of thousands of people to staff.

If we could leap-frog the Communist Chinese Slave Labor Model and have more things crafted by CNC and 3D printers, it would usher in a whole new generation of products - bespoke products that can be designed and fabricated to serve specific needs rather than trying to use some generic version.

I think it would be interesting to have articles on what we can do after we rid ourselves of the Enemy Within and get about doing the business of being productive human beings with dignity and purpose.

I read this too, Zombie, but also cannot recall where it appeared. An earlier onset date would seem to correspond with the January/February mass cremation claims. China is still lying about the death count and number of cases and we very well may never know about the onset date and its morbidity there. Obviously an earlier onset date would present greater culpability for what already appears to be at best extreme recklessness.

357 214, Ace,
There are multiple stories out there about this virus with this very point and the good news is that mutations are relatively minor. It is doubtful that it can evolve fast enough to prevent vaccine development, and drug treatments that work will probably keep working (unlike aids) in the near future.

USA Today had an article about it March 27, similar english language articles in Al Arabiya, etc. That should also help with using the old antibodies treatment and the Euros are even looking at reviving the old general vaccination using a harmless bug to "switch on" the immune system to fight this.

Pretty much checks with the scientific literature floating around about this. The major issue is whether the hydroxylchlorine cocktail can stop viral loads in patients from becoming enough to put them in a ventilator. If it can, then, we can buy time until vaccines arrive, probably sooner rather than later.

If everyone went masked and gloved in public, I suspect that would also take a major hit to the transmission link and reduce the number of new infections almost immediately. N-95's aren't necessary and actually you do not want the exhale port on possible sick people anyway. Surgical and homemade are generally fine to reduce the infectious person from spreading it especially if there are 25-50 percent asymptomatic spreaders out there.

367 I think this was a lab accident, not a bio weapon, but someone trying to isolate a virus, and being sloppy with it.

Posted by: rd at April 02, 2020 05:00 PM (+0uDE)

I've watched several inteviews now with different bio lab experts who say it is well known that China's lab employees take subject animals to the wet markets and sell them.
Remember, this is a country that sells not just wild animals, but domesticated dogs by the hundreds at these markets and kills them on the spot , handing them over to the buyer. Concern over proper handing of meat is way down the list of priorities.
Saw a brief video from Wuhan the other day on OANN , especially the food market area. It's now slowly opening, with plastic car type barriers up in front of stores and people have to reach over the wall for the bag of whatever they purchased. The stores are tin shack fronts and one had meat hanging in the open air on hooks, like it was 16th century England. Everyone was wearing a paper surgical mask, but no one was worried about that chunk of fatty meat hanging above the sidewalk.

368 I actually think this could be a big key to normalcy.

If I had a test that determined I was (likely) immune because I had already had it, I'm engaging in a lot more economic activity than I was before.

If this thing is as crazy contaigious as we're being led to believe, and like 20% have already had it and don't know it. Isn't that basically the same as vaccinating a huge swath of the population, it's almost like they've been vaccinatined and dont know it.

Also, we'd need far less vaccinations by prioritizing the people that haven't gotten it yet.

370 Whether it came from a lab or bat soup.
The Chinese are guilty. The Chinese are guilty of not protocol and telling the proper authorities.
The Chinese are guilty of intentionally forcing it's spread. - they forced Taiwan to accept flights from Wuhan.
They allow back and forth, to and fro flights from infected Wuhan to Italy, NYC, CA and other major destination.

China deserves punitive action.

373 On Jay Leno's Garage, there was an episode where he highlighted a guy who who democratized automobile design and using 3D printing technology was able to have a design-it-yourself car body built by the printer and then had the mechanical bits attached so that a running model was available in one man hour. What was even more fascinating is that the "factory" could be housed in as little as 1500 sq ft. This make it neighborhood sized.

397 The virology is pretty complicated and there is a lot of contention from what I read.

I think a couple points are relevant.

The S protein, the one that unlocks the ACE2 receptor appears sensitive to mutation and so is stable (which makes sense, since a small mutation will change the way it folds and stop it from working.) so the immune system, and a vaccine, will be pretty robust since that protein is stable.

This also makes it hard to determine if it was (a) natural in a reservoir, (b) a chimera where one animal got infected by two viruses and they swapped spit, or (c) engineered. (also, b could also be engineered, and has been done, by China, to get ACE2 characterisitics into virus in past.)

The reason it is hard is that to determine if it was natural or engineered, you look for a new and stable piece stuck on to an old and mutated piece. But the piece that would be stuck on is inherently stable, so does it mutate less in nature, or did is it less mutated because We fuk Yu just stuck it on to the rest of the sequence last month in wuhan?

399 It may not be an engineered virus but it naturally occurs in a species of bat used in two Wuhan virology labs. We have the Chinese themselves to thank for that information and Patient Zero is speculated to be a lab worker infected by bat blood while working in the lab. And when I say "speculated" I refer to that same Chinese study.

429 As for usefulness to an evil regime, a virus with a vaccine is an ideal weapon. It avoids casus belli since it is hard to prove the source, it devastates and locks down your adversary, and you can even come in and help them out as you attack.

There is no question as to usefulness, and that is why China has been doing all this work. The trick is in finding on, like sars, which is devastating and easy to control the spread, but also easy to release (so, for example, sars with ace2 receptor capability,.... )

I have posted a lot more on this on the ONT late nights.

I may have worded that poorly. The 4 positive cases in San Miguel were with the PCR testing, not the antibody test. I take that to mean that the virus has not entered that community in a significant way, and therefore the utility of a serologic test on that isolated county will probably NOT be a good reflection of prevalence of the infection in the broader U.S. population.

So apparently anyone can travel through the Panama Canal without a filed itinerary because they just let this ship through and here it is a burden on the American tax payer and healthcare system.

What a joke.

531 What we are looking at here is genius, in fact, the best-planned and most expertly executed October surprise the dems have ever come up with. They have been proven to care about only one thing, getting rid of President Trump. They don't care about human lives any more that China does. China probably ponied up several million people and the dems probably said 'that's generous of you Mr. Jzee, put us down for the same amount. Let's get this thing done here. We're on a tight timeline.' Sound about right so far?

548 blaster posted upthread about the IHME model.

I'm tracking about 16 states and have just begun entering data so I can look at actual daily deaths vs. the limits of the model. There are some weird deviations state/state. My spidey sense tells me that statistically, there are some issues with the variables used and other stat problems (avoiding tech terms here).

Clearly they have some variable that substitutes (or explicitly captures) comorbidity factors. Obesity is a major one and apparently involved in more than 50% of deaths in some areas--notably LA. Probably not politically correct to be more honest about what populations are so susceptible, but you can look at some major metro areas in GA, MI, IL as well.

NYC issue more complex and read today that Elmhurst, for ex, has many cases from less fluent immigrants living in cramped conditions. The claim in the article was that these folks could not read/understand the warnings. Don't know if that is true. More likely the idiot policies and actions of DeBlasio and his health head encouraging folks to celebrate Chinese NY, go to cinema, etc. are more implicated.

561 Dimbulbs and the Chinese lickspittles who are saying the novel coronavirus wasn't MADE in a lab are trying to obscure a simple fact -- a virus doesn't need to have been MADE in a lab to have COME from a lab. It doesn't take a science degree to comprehend this. Tucker Carlson has a great take on this angle.

There is a credible report that the Wuhan lab was STUDYING the virus, and it 'escaped'. They were using horseshoe bats to study the virus. There are no colonies of within hundred of miles of Wuhan -- only those in the lab. The wet market doesn't normally sell that type of bat, however the lab had a history of selling test animals in the wet market rather than destroying them. Very slack on other biocontrols as well -- who locates a virology lab studying the creation of bioweapons in the middle of a city???

Takeaway is that the Chinese Bat Virus definitely wasn't CREATED in the Wuhan lab, but it sure looks like the pandemic ORIGINATED from that lab.

So how did the Wuhan lab come by the virus in the first place? The Chinese stole it from a Canadian lab who got it from some sick guy in the middle east a few years ago. Sen. Cotton has that story, and there are other articles about it.

564 Hayes' expertise not withstanding, the attempt to discredit "human manipulation" in the origin of COVID-19 is a straw-man intended to deflect from the *other* "conspiracy theory" that the virus was under investigation at the infamous Wuhan lab and "leaked" out into the population *somehow*.

This second theory, while obviously unproven, is at leas plausible. It has been documented (sort of) that laboratory test animals have been sold in the local markets as food. That is a pretty significant possible vector, if true. This theory also helps explain the CCP government's effort to hide so much about the origin and advance of the disease - even at the expense of their own people. Who they obviously don't care about, because, well, communists.

565 I just had this conversation (unrelated to this AoS article) with my wife, who is a higher-up at the NIH. They are currently grappling with this very issue. It seems that there are currently 8 identified strains of COVID, and *it is currently unknown* if exposure (antibodies) to one conveys immunity to the others.

Therefore, at the moment I type this, the exposure test is essentially useless, save for pathogen spread analysis and things of that nature.

I'm on your side- but remember anything you read in the US media is the product of our crack squads of hyperintelligent journos.

(Oh, h/t to Ace or whomever posted those 60 Mins Australia youtube links- they're very worth watching and reminding us what journalism can be).

567 Human behavior in large groups will remain the same pretty much no matter what happens. Take the flu vaccine, for example. We've had it about as long as we've had vaccines. And yet some proportion of the population will not take the vaccine, will take it too late to be useful, take the vaccine and it be only partially effective, and take the vaccine and it work perfectly. This process takes place every year like clockwork and yet a very large population will get sick and some percentage will die.

Wuhan Coronavirus will be no different. Some iteration will, likely, persist until the herd immunity makes it unlikely to be transmitted and it will peter out.

But there will be death and destruction no matter what because that's what disease does and populations, on the whole, will go on behaving the way they have for eternity. We'll have to rely, once again, on herd immunity and not shutting down the world for an event that visits us regularly.
