Quarantine Cafe

Very cute livestream from Ian Galt -- two pairs of sea otters just floating on their backs, holding hands with their spouse.

The only organ these otters penetrate by surprise is your heart.

Just so you know, it is a livecam, so sometimes you'll click on it and no otters.

This isn't cute, but it is quarantine-themed: Photos from the biggest tourist destinations and busiest highways and crossorads on earth, at noon, almost completely deserted.

Oh -- wtf?

What the heck are those fins?

And -- who tries to pet a great white shark? Is this all fake?

Oh, one more: Will he make it?

Answers:

Yes

No

Almost/Kinda

This is fun:

Yeah, I pretty much thought that was a foregone conclusion for the entire country at this point.

Maybe, if some states are lucky, then kids can show up for the last week, see their friends and teachers, and get some sorta closure on the year, but I assume that's unlikely, if only for liability reasons.

Well, except for the last one. Had that happen at the National Aquarium in DC (in the basement of the EPA bldg., IIRC). They had a baby alligator in an elevated display. Interestingly enough, EU went hardcore on the whole "net neutrality" thing back in 2016.

Last few days, they've had to beg the video streaming companies to lower their bitrates and quality, because streaming is crowding out more critical data transfers like web pages, email, work teleconferencing, etc.

By law, the internet service providers can't throttle the video streams from the top down, even during emergencies.

100 Shortly after mid-night, the cruise vessel was approached by an armed Venezuelan navy vessel, which via radio questioning the intentions of the RCGS RESOLUTE's presence and gave the order to follow to Puerto Moreno on Isla De Margarita. As the RCGS RESOLUTE was sailing in international waters at that time, the Master wanted to reconfirm this particular request resulting into a serious deviation from the scheduled vessel's route with the company DPA.

While the Master was in contact with the head office, gun shots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed with an angle of 135° and purposely collided with the RCGS RESOLUTE. The navy vessel continued to ram the starboard bow in an apparent attempt to turn the ship's head towards Venezuelan territorial waters.

While the RCGS RESOLUTE sustained minor damages, not affecting vessel's seaworthiness, it occurs that the navy vessel suffered severe damages while making contact with the ice-strengthened bulbous bow of the ice-class expedition cruise vessel RCGS RESOLUTE and started to take water.

If you've never been to Waipio Valley at the NE end of Hawaii's Big Island, it truly is one of the most amazing places in America. The nation's steepest road is the only way in or out (25+ degrees), and once down there, the "roads" are actually just the streams, which the very few cars drive up and down. But most magically, there are wild horses living in the valley (which is on the coast, per your question), and they are the tamest wild horses in the world. They will walk along and stick their heads in your car window as you drive (speed limit down there is 5 mph), nuzzling you and nibbling everything in sight. It's completely bizarre, but unforgettable.

137 I haven't watched Tiger King, but there is a great organization in Eastern Colorado, The Wild Animal Sanctuary, that rescues pet predators from all over the world. For example, when a South American country outlawed owning animals like lions and tigers (to protect them), the local owners were going to kill them, so the WAS brought them all to CO.

While they technically allow visitors, it's not like a zoo. You cannot linger by the fences, you are told to goo immediately from your car to the main building, which has an elevated walkway (bring binoculars) to view the animals - bears, wolves, lions, tigers.

Oh, looks like they rescued this Tiger King dude's animals. Of course.

Venezuelan ship sank but all were rescued. Maduro is screaming about piracy"

Resolute incident - ROFL!!!! For those who've been following the Venezuelan breakdown, it's well known that no one in the Naval Service has been paid by the govm't in over a year. They are expected to make money by either running protection for drug shipments, or open piracy. (obviously what was happening in this incident) They funny part is that now Venezuelan naval ships are run by pure thugs and criminals who have not a clue how to actually handle a ship, much less maintain it. Which is why they sunk their own ship in this idiotic attack.

Their ships aren't very big, so I imagine it was like a Fiat trying to hurt a Mack Truck by ramming it from the side.

143 Tiger King is this documentary about people who love big cats. The nice thing is that it's non-political, so far at least, because everyone is crazy and besides every sort person in this is a crazyperson so their politics don't matter.

So the main players are:

"Joe Exotic," a totally gay Okie hick who has two husbands and loves threatening people with guns and says that if anyone comes to take his tigers away, they'll have a "waco" on their hands.

Connie Baskin (?), allegedly someone who is AGAINST the trade in exotic animals, but who... buys exotic animals and shows them off in her zoo. Oh, and at the end of episode 1, they drop the cliffhanger that she might have (probably did) kill her husband and feed him to the tigers.

Bagavan "Doc" Antle, a yoga cultist who has a literal sex cult of "apprentices" who are also either wives or girlfriends. He is able to recruit the girls because -- this is a big theme of the show -- people are really dazzled by big cats and will have sex just to play with a tiger.

A weirdo hustler who admits he uses baby tigers to get laid by sluts in Vegas -- "a little pussy gets you a lot of pussy."

A former drug dealer and a guy who admits he was PRESENT when a government agent was killed and then dismembered (as in Scarface) who used to smuggle drugs inside of exotic snakes, but then found out he really loves tigers and monkeys and now has his own menagerie.

They're all crazy. Well, the drug dealer might actually be sane.

199 Years ago, the XO and I were in the Big Fat building at the zoo. I'm standing there, looking at one of the white tigers. Suddenly, the tiger focuses on me. I shuffle off to the side, and his eyes follow me. I shuffle off to the other side and his eyes follow me. I start walking away and he starts pacing after me. All I can think is I now know what it's like being on a big cat's snack menu. Really gave me the heebie-jeebies. I move in another direction and we realize the tiger wasn't watching me but a leopard across the way. I had just happened to mirror the panther's movements for a couple of minutes.

I can safely say you really, really don't want a tiger's full attention.

The V10 was 6.8 the 7.3 is a proven Dump Truck Engine that they are going to retune (more midrange torque) and mate with a 10 speed transmission.

241 Near Sequoia National Park -- in the foothills, as you descend to the Central Valley -- there is a privately owned "big cat sanctuary" where they have an amazing array of Big Cats, including many endangered species. About five years ago, one of the young intern trainers was...eaten by one of the tigers. Supposedly, a totally tame out. Ooooops.

I visited the place just a few months after the "accident,": and they were still open for business (i.e. taking visitors around on tours). The most incredible thing about the place was not the feline cats themselves, but the chief trainer lady, who had these jaw-dropping eyes -- she looked exactly like a cat. Not via plastic surgery or makeup -- that's just how she looked. I will never forget those eyes. The Cloud Leopards and the Pallas Cat were cool, but those eyes....

I think she went into a career with big cats because of her appearance.

There is a reason why hundreds of hawkers walk the stands of a sporting event yelling "COLD BEER!! GET YOU'RE COLD BEER HERE!!!"

Because that is the way nearly all Americans drink it.

And when I was in Ireland nearly 20 years ago, doing pub crawling with friends, Guinness was served cold, unless you specified otherwise.

Warm beer means somebody dropped the ball and forgot to buy a bag of ice.

I know I've mentioned it here before - my cousin was eaten by one of his lions back in the 70's. He wasn't quite right after Viet Nam, got a ranch in WA, and for some reason decided it would be a good idea to keep a couple of lions.

Talk about not ending well.

Respect the cats. And never turn your back on them.

268 Things I'm wondering about with this Chinese flu;
Why isn't it completely decimating the homeless population. They are mostly male, debilitated, no hygiene. Why haven't we heard that they are all dead or dying?
Why haven't we seen any pictures of these overcrowded hospitals? They put beds in the Javits center for all of these patients, where are the patients. I mean the actually sick patients not the idiots who think they're infected.
We are just taking the word of politicians, the chronic liars in the press.

My theory, the homeless are less likely to encounter people who've been traveling to China or Italy than the better off. Elmhurst, NY is heavily Asian, but also has a high latino population which will spread the virus into the less affluent communities via public transportation. This is why the expect a peak in cases in the next 10 days or so.

276 Yes, you can pet great whites.

It's a thing with some people. The shark isn't very bright: if it thinks you look like a dolphin or a seal, it will go after you, and generally, scuba divers don't, so usually they don't go after humans unless they are wading in the surf, or swimming near the surface, or in the middle of a chum bath or something.

On the other hand, as I said, they aren't very bright, so maybe it wouldn't be so smart to trust that.....I mean, if you are stupid, you also make mistakes....
