I dropped everything and made it home in record time.
When I arrived at home the Fire Department Team was there as were Son and Prinz the Viszla. The lead search guy said "Sir, we found your son, after a bit of searching, but we couldn't get anywhere near him because of the dog going into protective mode, so we just lead them home, and it was all good!"
I loved that dog so much, a part of me died when he passed!

Still a classical newb. But Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante gets me every time. Still pisses me off that I had to bail on it being performed with a guest violinist who I think is absolutely great, but I had the kind of cold that would have meant a lot of sound effects from my seat.

I took two semesters of home-ec, cooking version. Didn't care much for the sewing part. Turns out cooking class is great way to hang out with girls in a non-dating setting, which played into my awkwardness regarding dating.

I had speculated that LA idiot's first back-down might have been to avoid damaging legal precedent when SAF or CRPA or NRA brought a suit - county counsel advised he back off his initial announcement, probably saw no legal basis for it.

So during my shopping adventure on Saturday, I remembered to check the seasonal section. Looking only for the classic Hershey milk chocolate eggs in the foil wrappers. And - none!

It's funny to read, but I'm pretty sure the expectation is you won't be visiting the liquor store every day. The package store on US military bases used to have similarly large limits. They wanted you to be able to buy enough for a month, or to have a large barbecue, but not enough that you could get rich reselling to civilians.

I would love to see the Mogollon Rim again, it's been too long! We would sit up late at night in the woods and try to tell each other good, scary stories about the Mogollon Monster. Best one ever was one night when I was telling the story of the Monster to a tent full of 11 and 12 year old scouts for the first time, and I had set up a signal with my buddy; when I gave a shout and shut the lantern off, he was to give a scream and howl and tear through the back of tent.
Oh, that night was epic!

Nursery was very busy. I asked a clerk "WTF?" with a nursery being an essential business, he tried an answer that wasn't all that coherent or convincing, I figure "fruit trees" - can't think of how else they'd fit in.

My mom is Italian and utterly beautiful, was a model when young. I swear she doesn't eat, much less cook. and my dad was in the military until I was in HS and after that was in private practice so essentially never around, either ate at the base or on the quick at the hospital I guess. I cooked for me and my brother, and my brother cooked a bit too, we cooked for ourselves. He's a better cook than I am for some things, other things I do better

got really weird really fast! a freshman on JV wanted the number - so "someone" (the coach!) told one of the team captains to set aside the uniform and hold it for the frosh. three years on varsity at that point with that number so we kind of made a stink, especially about the way it was done? just ASK. that DIDN'T happen! so the AD got involved and we kept the number. it felt really weird. would have given the number up if ASKED!!

Anyhoo back to the story. Turns out that the general tsoas chicken and Peking duck were all actually goose. So what you ask? Why ole Scrooge bought Bob cratchett the biggest goose in town one christmas. Well turns out geese are a nuisance animal where I live and they owners were going down to the river at night and snaring them and using them in the restaurant. That's not what got them shut down though... ....... they got caught slaughtering and cleaning them in the restaurant kitchen.........ooops. Its an Italian place now after being a Chinese place for 40 years. Hygiene. It saves lives.

When the toast (or better - English Muffin) pops, remove that, slather dairy butter on to a level your cardiologist would never approve. Another way is when using an electric skillet to cook bacon, is to crack the eggs in a small amount of grease remaining (you save bacon grease right? Nod your head "yes") and pour about a 1/4 cup of water or milk in the pan, set the heat to 250 and cover. This will sort of steam/poach the eggs to a medium runny yolk about the time the toast pops.
Sprinkle generously with coarse grain sea salt.

Yikes!!! Even with non-stick pans, turn the heat up at the beginning, put in about 1/8 a stick of butter, as soon as it melts turn the heat down to about 1/2 and then put your egg in. I prefer over easy style, it's faster, and I don't like the white to be slimy. You can still get a soft yolk if you pull it off the heat fast after the flip. Also, salt and pepper while it's cooking, so it gets down into the egg.

I think it is more than the ridge, MisHum. I think it is sliding down the slope in a major hard way. We have a constitutional right to practice our faith as WE see fit not as the government deems prudent. You cannot give "essential services" status to things that are not a fundamental right (like liquor stores) and not give that designation to places that do involve our fundamental rights (like churches and gun stores).

When police started enforcing the various orders, that was ballgame. This stuff will only end when the various mayors and governors say it ends - and not one second before. They seized the power, used it, and by doing so dictated the rules of the game.

They do not have these emergency powers. Even people that the government quarantined coming off flights from Wuhan were given a sheet of information on their right to challenge that quarantine in court. Court precedence allows the government to quarantine people who are actually ill with a communicable disease. The court record for quarantining people who have been exposed to a communicable disease is more mixed... some courts allowed it and some didn't. There is NO precedence for the forced isolation of an entire non-ill population.

However, where you might have a legal challenge is that quarantine laws apply to sick people and people who have come in contact with sick people. Quarantining the entire population is new - it's not something they did in 1918.

Grab a muffin pan. Place 1 tablespoon water in each muffin space. Crack an egg into that space (you can break the egg into a small dish and then slip into the pan if you wish). Bake at 350 for 12-14 minutes. Start on the low end and add a minute if the egg does not appear to be firm enough. Remove from oven, loosen with spatula to plate.

I was reading about this "emergency powers" stuff. It is not really spelled out explicitly in the Constitution, nor of the states, nor in law.
When there is a time of emergency, the executive usually just declares it is assuming emergency powers of whatever form it thinks necessary.
The track record of the courts is generally to stay out of it until the emergency is over, then come in and say, "well, that was okay, but this wasn't", etc,etc.
Look at some of the shit Woodrow Wilson did in WWI. Like locking up people for protesting the war and criticizing Wilson. It happened.
Now remember Oliver Wendall Holmes, Jr's famous "fire in a crowded theater" line that is oft cited even today by idiots who don't understand things?
He wrote that line in an opinion upholding Wilson's ban on speech criticizing the draft. Holmes considered that the equivalent of shouting fire in a crowded theater.
Any time you hear some idiot cite that, remind him of the context.

Portland in 1918 did aggressively enforce social distancing - movie theaters and nightclubs were closed, there were strict limits on how many people could ride on a streetcar (with people onboard to enforce the limits), and restaurants had to leave every other table empty. The incubation period of the Wuhan virus can be as much as a couple weeks without symptoms. We've tested about 1 million people in total in the US so far and it is pretty much only people who are actively showing symptoms meaning we really have no idea who is sick.
Almost 700,000 people died in the US in the Spanish flu when the population was less than a third of what it is today. More than in WWI. In today's numbers we would be looking at over 2 million deaths.
Just saying using what we did in 2018 is probably not the strongest argument for how to deal with this.

But tonight, at Aldi, I finally saw some of those hoarders who were emptying those shelves. The couple had an overflowing cart with many loaves of bread, pounds of sugar, gallons of honey, much more I didn't want to stare too closely. Any more than I did.
Now, I don't blame anyone for stocking up, especially if this thing spirals on for weeks. And even if that couple just rarely shopped, so that was ordinary stocking-up for them, in ordinary times, I could understand perfectly. But, all I could think was, "Oh, so it's you guys doing all this!"
They didn't look like they had missed many meals, IYKWIMAITTYD.
I did not call and report them to the authorities.

Also did laundry today, finally. Lots of it.
Laundry lady already had the Authorities up in her biz about how many can be there (no more than 10), and no folding after drying. Only thing she wasn't doing already was having signs posted about it. She's always cleaning - that laundry, I think you could eat off the floor. Unlike the other one, where I don't actually want to walk on their floor... heh.
Laundry lady's tales of irate folk who don't want to follow rules were sad & funny.

My quick google shows a tax then, repealed in 1870s, some court cases going back and forth, and the 16th Amendment ratified in 1913 to seal the deal.

There was an income tax during the Civil War. It was repealed in the late 1860. In 1894, it was re-introduced. In 1895 it was ruled unconstitutional.
The 16th amendment was proposed in 1909 and ratified in 1913.

The Portland metropolitan government is proposing a 1% income tax "to help the homeless" - but only on people making more than $150,000 a year.
It will pass in Portland, of course, but suburbanites get to vote on it too - we'll see how many people are dumb enough to think that the income tax will stay at 1%, and only for incomes over $150,000, if it passes.

the current income tax is based around the deal made in Congress to reduce the emphasis the excise tax had on US politics, and the use of it to restrict open trade.
The theory was that if the excise could be made unimportant and the tax burden moved to the wage earners, there would be less fighting between agrarian and manufacturing states (read Dems and Repubicans)
Wilson just turned the marginal rates down to finance his war, along with the central bank.
The Wilson thing is that taxes went up temporarily and were supposed to go back down afterward. But it never seems to work out that way.

I would very much say that is how this should be handled. Yes people died (far more actually than would die in the same exact circumstances today because of advances in medicine). But no one ever suggested that the world should stop because there was a new disease. Even in places where they did practice "social distancing" it was with the cancellation of large scale public events. It was not handled by forcing businesses into bankruptcy or by the police arresting preachers for holding services.

TuCa had an interesting thing tonight. The virus comes from a bat that doesn't live within 900 miles of Wuhan. 59 witnesses swear that kind of bat wasn't on sale at the wet market.
That kind of bat was being studied at one of the biolabs in Wuhan. I'm not down with the it was an intentional bioweapon released with the twirling mustaches, but I totally believe they fucked up something and tried to cover it up.

At dinner tonight, a friend showed me phone pics of a truck wreck on Hwy. 87, between Payson and Phoenix/Mesa. Southbound semi lost his brakes on the hill, and laid it over on a bridge, blocking both lanes. Trailer burst open and spilled most of the cargo - eggs, a metric fuckton of them. People in the trapped vehicles behind the wreck scavenged some eggs, but most were broken. Road was running yellow with egg yolks. They were stuck there 7 hours. They got out the lawn chairs, and made a party of it. Trucker was not hurt.

If I had to say the source is what they are covering up. Maybe a Bioweapon. The biggest thing to me is that it does not seem to be virulent enough for that, for which we may be very lucky. The reaction they had to me said that they expected the death toll to be far, far worse. Everything that follows is just me trying to make sense of what they did.
Long incubation time (during which you may or may not be infectious.) In a truly deadly disease that would be a world ender.
So, I guess this theory goes.
1) Bioweapon is released from their labs somehow.
2) They shit their pants.
3) They lock everything and anything down, once it becomes apparent they have no control over the spread.
4) It is less virulent than their bioweapon scientists promised (when it was a weapon supposed to be unleashed on their enemies.)
5) They start to unclench. Start using it to their advantage (aforementioned dissident liquidation) and after it spreads to the west, their biggest problem becomes making sure it never, ever comes out how this all happened.
This is just me spinning a yarn here. I dunno, what they did does not make sense based upon the disease we are experiencing.

Two things: Peeling that many cloves is easy if you use the glass jar with a lid and the shake 'em up for a few seconds method. Loosens the skins right up and they peel easily; just don't cram pack the jar to allow room for them to bounce around. I told my friend this trick (found on YouBoob) and she uses it at Thanksgiving when she peels a lot of garlic; she couldn't believe something so simple actually works.
Also, be wary of those peeled cloves. Bleach can be involved, not to mention Chinese slave laborers.

I call bullshit on that comet's "size". It may have a very tenuous atmosphere 5 times the size of Jupiter, but its total mass is probably on a par with the moons of Mars.
Let's hope it gives us a good show. Halley's comet was big letdown on its last go-round.
I wonder if there is time to launch a space mission to intercept it, and snag some samples?

Yes, I think this virus was released by a ChiCom lab fuck-up. When docs in Wuhan first identified this thing, they alerted Beijing, which responded by telling them to keep it quiet and destroy the samples they had isolated.
Why the hell would you want to destroy samples? Likely because they already all the samples they needed, being under study and experiment in the Chicom bio lab.
I think this explains the coverup. They wanted to cover up the fact that they had a bad breach in their labs and accidentally let this thing out.
It's not some engineered bioweapon, just something they were studying and playing with in that level-4 lab.

Fascinating car was the old early 70's Buick Electra - an old man's car with a 460 big block engine and fuel injected over the top four carb that had all four barrels kick in at just over 60MPH electronically - it literally had a passing fuel/oxygen dump if you double stomped on the accelerator. It would beat a lot of the hot running and lighter GTOs and Fords at the half during its time.

Methanol and water mix, about 50/50 I think. Didn't have the intercooler that today's turbos have, so that stopped the "spark knock"
The engine turned out 215 hp from the factory, so it was 1 hp per cubic inch, pretty good for 1962. Aluminum block so it was a pretty light car, doesn't take much hp to give you a thrill.
Much better to have the 4 speed than the 2 speed automatic for sure.
The F-85's and Jetfires supposedly had pretty slushy handling though, so other than a straight line you were pushing your luck on thrills. Too bad they didn't combine that with the Pontiac Tempest rear transmission IRS setup

1. High density of population. You are a whole lot more likely to encounter an infected person in NYC than in a Kansas wheat field.
2. Very few privately owned vehicles. You are unlikely to contract the virus while driving your car, but riding in a subway or a taxicab you are at much higher risk. Cabbies have such close contact with so many people that their chance of getting infected is far higher than an average person's chance, and once infected they become a "Typhoid Mary" and spread the Communist Flu to many people. The metal railing and plastic seats in subway cars are another good vector for the disease.

The F85 automatic was a three-speed, a variant of the "Slim Jim" hydramatic. Big problem was cast iron sealing rings on the governor wearing grooves in the case, leading to hard shifts that broke parts. Ask me how I know.

Preliminary stuff from the NTSB investigation of "Nine-o-Nine"'s crash caused this.
1. That day's crew chief, who survived, was unaware of safety procedures or the safety program.
2. Lack of documentation of training.
3. Lack of oversight since the Command Pilot that day was also Chief of Maintenance.
4. P leads on left magneto on #4 engine were safety wired to prevent separation, this meant that magneto grounded out.
5. Right magneto on #4 engine was producing a weak spark, cam past service life.
6. #3 engine spark plugs were fouled and had incorrect gap.
7. #3 engine cylinders showed detonation damage.

I think this might cause millennials to rethink their attitude about cars and driving, and maybe even their preference to live like caged rats in big cities.

It's important to remember that 100 octane fuel does not necessarily contain 13% more energy than 87 octane, but that it permits an engine to run a higher compression ratio and/or greater supercharger boost than does the 87 octane without destroying itself, thereby delivering more power per cubic inch displacement, and more power per weight of the engine.

Interesting to hear what they're doing - inventories of beds/equipment that may be needed at anticipated peak (projected for last week of April in CA), division of labor, organizing a system to make use of all facilities - including out-patient centers that are now dark.

The CV-19 site that has timelines and projected situations by state shows CA with no deficit in beds/ICU beds by peak date - very curious. No idea how they compile their capacity figures. They have invasive ventilator #s, but no projection on how many cases will require them at peak - so no "gap" projection there.
For comparison, their numbers for NY show a bed gap of 62K, and an ICU bed gap of about 11K. No idea if this takes into account expedient capacity (Comfort, field hospitals, etc).
Other states with projected sizable gaps - NJ, MI, MA, LA, CT.
Great disparities between various states on incidence, and timelines.

There it is again - the slippery slope. A few Morons of fine repute have bemoaned repeatedly that all this could end, and quickly, if folks would just do their civic duty.
The trick is - who defines it ? Because some define it as not owning a car, living outside the city, or using a straw. Those in charge, including the orange guy at the top that I voted for, have defined it as putting a soft, unannounced martial law in place to protect a number still less than a seasonal flu.
The definition of civic duty is a powerful hammer, and a favorite one of tyrants. Because it works like a charm. Never assume the definition of civic duty will always be to your liking.
It may just be the wearing of a yellow star, and reporting those that don't.

Compared to the world, the US is now the main "infection center."
The reported recovery rate is pathetic as it seems virtually no one recovers from it.
US 4pct recovered, Italy 15pt recovered, Spain 22pct recoverd.
