The either/or came from a book I read in those far-off days by George Steiner, "Tolstoy or Dostoevsky: An Essay in Contrast." He thought Dostoevsky was the more significant writer (I don't remember the exact term of evaluation he used). But I agree with you.

As with any portrait, the question is how much of this is the imagination of the painter, and how much the subject?

The goal of a good portrait is not just to recreate the subject's likeness, but to communicate personality and his soul, too. Because of this some of the seen features may need to be sacrificed to better represent the unseen features. How much is sacrificed and what will most likely depend on who's paying for the painting. But a clever artist can still reflect reality while giving the patron what he wants. The best example of this is Goya's portrait of the Spanish royal family. The Royals liked it but everyone else saw it for the joke it was.

I do see that happening skip! and my two when they are done with their video conferencing for the day go right out either walk, jog, walk the dogs, or bike.
for younger teens who are growing quickly, this isn't terrible. they can sleep more, apparently eat a lot more (!!), they still seem to be learning the important subjects, and no one sees the acne

OK, being mostly ignorant of art history, did people sitting for
portraits back then have to be present for the entire painting, or would
the artist get the broad strokes in, and just have the subject come

Sometimes a body double would sit in, and the subject would come for the face, hands, and other individual traits. Sometimes the sitter would be there for the whole thing. If you can afford to have your portrait done by a high level artist, you are probably one of the leisure class anyway and have a lot of time on your hands. It was also a status symbol to sit for a portrait by X-artist.

The second half of it was notably bad.

You got to where you are by following the rules and doing things right. You made your payments on time even when things didn't go your way.
"Had a bad month? Fuck you, pay me"
"Had unexpected expenses? Fuck you, pay me"
Now it's your time to take care of yourself and fuck everyone else.
While you still have the time, before the banks shut you off, max out whatever credit lines you have and put the money in cash at home. If you have a home equity line or business line of credit, get it all in cash.
If things bounce back immediately after the crisis with "pent up demand", pay back the credit lines and the minimal interest.
If things go from bad to worse, which is the likely outcome, you'll have cash to work with. You can defer payments now with penalty or hurting your credit rating, but when the shit hits the fan, just stop paying anyone.
The bankruptcy rate when this is all over is going to be astronomical. When creditors call, just say that you have nothing coming in and therefore nothing is going out. Tell them if they want to sue, go for it and that your lawyer will be paid first.
When they want to foreclose on your mortgage, tell them to get in line. Hide your cash and declare bankruptcy with about 25% of the rest of the country. Your docket date will be sometime in 2085.
Take care of yourself and your family. That's the only job you have.

The Hollywood version is disjointed. Natasha's abandonment of Pierre makes Natasha feel flighty instead of distraught. The spectacle feels small. Henry Fonda is all wrong as Pierre. Audrey Hepburn feels wrong as Natasha.

On Amazon I ran across an excellent Russian mini-series called 'Three Days in the Life of Lt. Kravtsov'.
It's about a newly minted Soviet LT taking command of a group of grizzled vets in WW2.
Highly recommend it, if you can deal with sub-titles.

I disagree.
War and Peace is a very large story of both the people involved and a nationalistic narrative of Russia through the first couple of decades of the 19th century.
He obviously didn't film everything in the novel, having largely cut out some fairly prominent minor characters like Denisov, but hyperbole.
I think he captured the grand scope of the overall conflict and brought the characters to life with great skill. Natasha, as played by Lyudmila Savelyeva, is wonderful, for instance.

I'm a little sick of the toilet paper makers covering their asses with bullshit. They have significant supply chain issues and have not responded to increased consumer demand. They tried to say it was both a hoarding issue and then said it was dislocation between consumer and commercial markets. OK, so get off your asses and fix it.
We have car companies making ventilators, breweries making hand sanitizers, all types of industry making masks and the paper companies can't make more of their product and get it on the shelf because- boo-hoo you have market dislocation? Maybe you should do something else and get out of the way. Because you're incompetent.

It would be nice if there was a political party that stood behind the President and helped push back on all the attacks he gets from all fronts. It's not bad enough that he deals with the enemies outside the tent, but he's got to deal with all the Deep Staters inside the tent that are just itching to frag the guy at the first opportunity.
It would be even nicer if there was a media outlet that would be counted on to give a competing view of the world - one that was outside the monomedia echo chamber that has as their mantra OrangeManBad.
It's a shame that none exists. Trump has had to fight this fight alone. I can't imagine anyone else - Cruz included - that would or could withstand what this guy has gone through. And these guys want to do the Impeachment Three: Electric Boogaloo once again?! Really?

TCM had a whole day of Akira Kurosawa recently. If you have a Roku, you can get the TCM app and watch anything they've showed for up to 6 weeks. It is really helpful for those times when they show something you really want to see at 3 am.

I toured his mansion some years ago. The guide told a funny anecdote:

It's mostly an issue of dislocation between the commercial and consumer markets and they DON'T want to make an investment in what they believe will be short term demand. By the way, they had a gross margin last year of ~65%. But who knows. Maybe you know more. Than a guy who has been covering them for 25 years.

That being said, I always felt like Seven Samurai would have benefited being shot in a wider aspect ratio.
That's most evident in the final shot of the film, with the remaining samurai in front of the graves of those that have fallen. It feels like the shot should continue out on both sides to include more of the graves.

Don't run Zoom when you aren't on a call, and maybe unplug your camera (if it's not a laptop) when you aren't on a call.

Except for 1984 and Pelham, I've been going through my DVDs, a lot of which I bought but have never watched.
So far I've seen Cleopatra, Dreyer's Vampyr, the silent comedy The Girl in the Pullman with poor Marie Prevost and a 15-part 1919 serial, A Woman in Gray, starring Arlene Pretty.
I liked how Dreyer used the end of Griffith's A Corner in Wheat to kill the doctor in Vampyr.

Dostoevsky iirc was writing it chapter by chapter for a newspaper. At least Brothers Karamatzov.
Which is why some early chapters are the way they are--like the one whole chapter that's a sermon.
He was literally getting paid by the line so zero incentive to brevity.
It's stunning to read the book afterward and realize he could never edit the previous chapter as he proceeded, since it had been published.
That's my understanding anyway.

Ozark is great. The characters are all ...nuanced. the main "protagonists" are NOT likable, but I felt that way about Breaking Bad. I hated Walt, his wife, her sister, the DEA agent ... I only liked Jessie and Mike lol
The young blonde "hick" girl is awesome. Incredible actress.
Later in the series Dabney Coleman is in it - he's amazing. It's really good, just trust me

I have a soft spot for The Black Dahlia. It's not good, but it has two absolutely fantastic sequences (the discovery of the body, and the death of Aaron Eckhart's character). Outside of that, it's goofy in not a great way.
James Ellroy insists that the three hour director's cut is the best adaptation of his work ever, but he has nothing kind to say about the theatrical cut. I want to see that director's cut.

The Criterion version comes with Dreyer's script, which makes things slightly clearer. It's a very impressionistic film, and confusing for a first-time viewer. I might do a write up for it for the movie thread for this Hallowe'en - when is a vampire movie not a vampire movie?

The retailers are not helping. Easiest way to end the hoarding spree? Sell rain checks for TP. Walk in store, go to cashier or Customer Service, and pay the normal retail price for one package of cannon fodder. Limit of one rain check per customer. Clerk totes up all rainchecks, and when a shipment of bum wad arrives, enough units are sequestered in the back rooms to honor the rainchecks. Raincheck holders pop into store periodically (they are buying other stuff, right?), present raincheck to Customer Service, and a unit is fetched for him/her.
Process is tedious enough to deter hoarders, but less tedious than joining the daily scramble for those who really need it.

What strikes me most is how honestly true-to-life the problem presented is. (how did the Samurai die?) We all like to assume that there is a simple binary solution to consider, one person is lying, and one is telling the Truth - but in Rashoman, we are given 4 different stories, each of which sound believable, even though they all contradict each other. As you examine the problem, you realize that each story contains some truth and some lies, reflecting the self interest of the teller.
The common conclusion is that the Viewer is simply supposed to choose which story he agrees with most, but after several viewings I think Kurosawa left some good clues embedded as to what he intended the real story to be.

The latest Star Trek series are in that territory.
I kind-of get it, for series like Paul WS Anderson's "Origin", that you have to set up characters with a horrid past in order to get the redemption arc going for the future.
Over a TV series, though, the problem here is a whole series episodes where everyone is a dick. And those are the first episodes.

I can't imagine feeling that way. I remember getting a popcorn ball in the early 80s from an old lady on our street. Yeah, I did not eat it. We all wanted the candy bars! I do remember being about 11 or 12, and going out with my little brother and some friends, but no parents. My brother's candy bag got swiped by some BMX toughs. I tried to chase them on foot, but they got away. I guess it was a life lesson for us...

"Ozark" - is a great watch,
Other streaming faves:
"Giri/Haji" - Japanese/Brit police/gangster drama. Great actors all the way through. Great script. Tight tense direction.
The downside? Between 1-2 minutes of hardcore Teh Ghey porn cuz naturally one of the main characters is ghey so we have to see him buttfucking. It occurs in Chapter 2 about midway through.
Otherwise, a great watch so far.
"Devs" - great tight script. Great acting. Nice foreshadowing and philosophical nuances. From the same guys who wrote/directed "Ex Machina".
If you liked that, you'll this.
"Saga of Tanya the Evil" - on crunchyroll. Insane fun-mirror distortion of WWI (with some WWII mixed in) from an alternate world German-is perspective, where magic is part of the war.
Weirdly philosophical as the protagonist, Tanya, is a reincarnated Japanese salaryman in an existential fight with God(?).
Lots of fun action. Interesting character. As a bonus there's a movie after you've finished the series.
Kookkoobananas, in a good way.
"Konosuba" - on crunchyroll. Silly comedy anime series that will probably give you a couple of good laughs each episode. Great characters. Plus, recent movie to watch after you finish season 1 & 2.

Their media is also telling them that hospitals are "war zones" apparently. There's also video from Ireland where the lady filming shows nobody is being tested in the tent she sneaked into.
Also, the progs are going apeshit over these videos saying "YOU'RE FILMING THE OUTSIDE", however, what they are not taking into account is that *SO* is the news media, just the night before.
In some cases the empty hospitals guys are filming the same locations where the news media has recently shown people in lines...OUTSIDE the hospital.
Given the American commie history of rent-a-mobs, this isn't so unexplained why the news media can film crowds.
I attended a Life Chain event, where our chain stretched for 3 miles, and across the street 12-15 students gathered to protest for "Reproduction Rights" and when I saw the footage, I saw a sparsely populated part of the chain where we our group couldn't fit that many, because of a curve in the road, small shoulder and guard rail. The rest of the chain was *pretty much* elbow-to-elbow, btw. And then they crowded the counter protestors next to a telephone poll, which took up a reasonable portion of the shot and crowded everybody into the shot and made it look like a crowd.
I've seen media manipulation first hand. I have no hope of believing the media or doubting their complicity.

As for moral judgments, that's a personal issue that people need to take up with their own conception of God. Don't do anything you can't live with.
As a practical matter, I remember the great Texas crash of 1986, when everyone in state ended up in bankruptcy. The people who did what JWest is suggesting owned all of Texas by 2001. We may not like it, but that's how it goes.

Well, you have a reason to do that and I'm sorry that your wife is having such problems. I will keep her in prayer. It's people with no such issues who do this who annoy me. Two weeks ago before they put limits on them I saw a woman putting what must have been 200 rolls in her jeep. Maybe she had intestinal issues, but I think she was just as likely freaked out and was hoarding.
