The Morning Report - 3/26/20

chimen.jpg

Good morning, kids. Thursday and the good news is the $2 trillion emergency King Kong Ching Chong Relief-a-Palooza passed in the Senate late last night. A last minute foul up in the language on unemployment insurance that could have led Bernie Sanders to block passage evidently was ironed out and the bill sailed through by a near unanimous vote; four GOP senators were absent due to quarantine. The bad news is, at 880 pages we don't know what concessions to the Democrats are in it; the mistake that the GOP was panicked about was a wording error that would have made unemployment insurance permanent, and so Bernie got all excited about that. I assume that got nixed...

UPDATE: Commenter Tami states "I don't think this is correct, JJ. The Sasse amdt. was to fix that language. It needed 60 votes to pass. Vote was 48-48. It failed so the language in the bill remained." To which I say, "feh."

...but the President commented that the mere $25 million for Malig-Nancy Pelosi to give to the Kennedy Center was just "a cheap sound-bite" in the grand scheme of things. But over time, it adds up to trillions and Chinese plague or not, the debt clock goes tick-tock-tick-tock. In any case it's over to her side of the Capitol Dome to review, approve and pass on to the Oval Office for signature. That is if the Donkey Chompers AOC contingent don't try to pull a fast one on Malig-Nancy and gum up the works. More on the economics of this in a moment.

As to what's happening in the real world with this, contrary to the Democrat-Media Complex's Chinese Central Committee-fueled agitprop, a Johns Hopkins study finds America more prepared than any other nation to deal with this China-inflicted plague. At least in terms of the raw death toll figures. Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House Chinese Coronavirus Task Force said that our response is indeed bending the curve down, but the fact remains that we still do not have enough accurate data to really get a true picture of this disease in order to know what measures to take. With the population locked down, and an intentional drumbeat of gloom and doom from the media, the cure is definitely looking to be more destructive than the disease itself.

On top of all of that, we have the twin dim-bulbs of Democrat dumb-assery Andrew Cuomo and Warren Wilhelm Klink De Blasio, whose ineptitude and political maneuvering have made New York State and City the nation's hotspot for this pestilence. I do not think it's a stretch to say that their blind ideological stance on open borders and lax policing may very well have led to the infection itself and for sure its spread. I give you the governor's own tripe itself - "We welcome people" - as evidence that only bolsters my assertion. Then, sensing that what's left of Biden's brain is visibly seeping out of his ears and that the DNC might call on him this summer in Milwaukee, he attacked the President about the lack of ventilators. Has this fool not been paying attention the past five years? Trump immediately retaliated with the truth that Cuomo's own malfeasance in not being prepared and indeed focusing on all manner of social justice insanity instead of doing his duty in making the state prepared. Cuomo replied "hummina, hummina, hummina, racist!"

Meanwhile, the lanky hunk of self-important idiocy De Bolshevik only a few weeks ago said we should ignore the Oriental plague and get on with our lives as normal, and now he's whistling a very different tune, and claiming that at least half of all New Yorkers may get the Asian clap. Yet the media continues pimping that Trump called all this a hoax, along with reports that allegedly the morgues and hospitals are running out of room. All things considered, color me skeptical. In any case, what are the actual causes of death? How old are the victims? What underlying health conditions did they already have? As to overflowing hospitals and ERs, could it be people who might only have a bad cold or flu been driven into a panic by the constant Chicken Little media and gone to the ER when they otherwise might not have?

It's not just Cuomo and DeBolshevik. The manifest irresponsibility of the media in driving this narrative that the disease is some sort of fatal Black Death has made everyone cautious in the extreme. So the self-quarantining and shuttering of all public commercial activity has driven the nation to the brink of economic collapse, and in my view unnecessarily. The death toll and morbidity of this virus is still way below that of previous outbreaks and that of common seasonal flu as well. While it is inarguable that the quarantine will reduce the rate of transmission, what should have been done from the outset and certainly right now is to isolate those people who are most at risk from contracting the disease: the elderly, infirm and those with chronic respiratory, autoimmune or coronary conditions. The much-ballyhooed cases of young people getting infected and perhaps dying are tragic, but they are anecdotal. What no one in the media is reporting, since it will destroy the panic meme they continue to spew, is the number of individuals infected who have gotten over it or those who remain asymptomatic.

There is a thing known as "herd immunity," and forgive me if I'm botching the explanation, which means that over time, the population builds up a resistance to a pathogen to the point where it ultimately burns out. Quarantining everyone has the effect of blocking that from happening. But if we allow the most low risk groups in the population to go about their normal activities, we can theoretically be rid of this plague in a shorter time frame. It also means that life can get back to normal and we don't have to ruin our economy in the bargain.

The longer this goes on, the more this damages society as a whole. We cannot continue living in a state of siege. The numbers just do not justify what we are doing to ourselves, or more accurately what we are allowing some very nefarious and evil forces with the media on their side to do to us. No, Chinese Coronavirus is not a hoax. It's as serious as a heart attack, or perhaps pneumonia. But what we're doing amounts to amputating our arm to cure an infection on our big toe.

Madness.

43 Questions from Slate advice columns this morning:

1. One LW says her co-worker's wolf whistle text alert is triggering because she expects it to be immediately followed by a remark about her body. Question: Has this literally ever happened? Street harassment, OK, but has anyone outside of a cartoon ever been wolf whistled at?

2. Another LW says her coworker is racist because he did an engagement photo shoot at a former plantation. Question: It's not a plantation NOW. What are the owners, who probably aren't the original owners, supposed to do with their property? Raze the buildings to the ground and salt the earth? Second question: Is there any amount of time elapsed that would put an end to this? One hundred, two hundred, three hundred years from now, would whoever owns the property then be allowed to host parties and engagement photos?

64 Last year, after the New York legislature passed their joke of a budget, irresponsibly laden with giveaways for illegal immigrants and chock full of left wing political goodies, the NY Comptroller told them it would come up short on revenue.

This is what has gone on in NY under Cuomo as governor. It's demonstrably true, just look at the budgets when he was in office.

To make matter worse, Cuomo had the opportunity to do things like by more venitlators or create a rainy day fund to cover the state in times of crisis or financial downturn. He instead chose politics over the people. He spent millions in NY taxpayer money having his AG harass the president, his family and his policies. Money that could have been better spent on the people of NY.

This crisis and the rest of America isn't an opportunity for Cuomo to close a budget gap and crisis he created. So go suck a bushel of lemons.

68 I've finally figured out why all this shutdown bothers me so much:
Because it's not aimed at keeping people from dying.
No, it's to merely REDUCE the rate of spread.

EVERYONE is going to be exposed sooner or later.

All this is, is to try and prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed with too many people at once and, if so, then maybe they can save some of those hardest hit

But: There's a huge amount of people who are going to die from this no matter what

But the very stupid left being very poorly educated in useful knowledge such as math, saw that graph about "flattening the curve" and stupidly read it as meaning less deaths overall.

When what it mostly said was more like, instead of 100 deaths per day for a week, we could flatten it to 50 deaths a day for two weeks.

But, the big scary mountain was turned to a nice long hill and that would be cookie and milk time.

And forth from that it's become: IF YOU DON'T DO ALL THESE THINGS YOU'RE GOING TO KILL EVERYONE AND MEEEE!!

I don't necessarily blame those guys. With hundreds of pages to go through and a ticking clock, it's easy to miss that. It does condemn the entire bill writing and passing process. As if the lessons of Obamacare and the mad rush to pass these thousand-page disasters in record time did not drive home that point.

It also proves that the lawmakers don't really write the laws. They are done by lawyers and political hacks perhaps way in advance and then pulled out at a moment's notice.

This is NOT what the Founders intended.

And the French Quarter is now populated primarily by rats.

104 To make matter worse, Cuomo had the opportunity to do things like by more venitlators or create a rainy day fund to cover the state in times of crisis or financial downturn.

Mnuchin explained this really well last night when Hannity pointed it out (loudly).

What he said is, they realized this would happen but the individual offices handling these claims in each state are old and archaic and could not handle customizing for individuals (based on what they normally received), so they had to white wash the entire country with the same.

It was because our government offices and capabilities are so out of date they could not handle it per person's needs. Of course they are. The money is given to crap - vote for me - causes.

Another example of how government fails miserably.

I agree. I get why he can't do so now, but I hope that in the next term Trump gets serious about these spending bills. I have some colleagues who would not hesitate to rank themselves as 5. That's the top number. They're very good pastors, but they're also very good at self promotion. It's not one of my strengths. So, a "non anxious presence" compared to what-I've never been through this before. A non anxious presence compared to what-when someone's spouse is dying, or someone they know committed suicide or they just got cancer diagnosis?. But in the middle of a coronavirus in a church that doesn't do live streaming-I ranked myself as a 3. I expect I'll get a follow up e-mail today-How can me help you achieve maximum potential at this time. Gaah?

Nobody cared, not even blacks, about the Confederate flag, and then suddenly everyone cared.

The Kennedy Center funding is a tell. It's a flashing neon, siren-emitting tell. It tells us that they were not focused on the immediate need of rescuing (not bailing out) people who are/already have lost their jobs or businesses because of a government-mandated shutdown. This is not charity, it is necessary assistance to rectify the damage done by the government. It is to help these people pay their immediate bills, tide them over until this is over.

The Kennedy Center funding and all the rest that got crammed in there tells us these are people who are incapable of doing their job at the most critical hour. They are greedy, self-centered, unserious people who do not have their constituents', their country's well-being at heart -- Hell, we may not even be in the top 10 list of priorities; they may even want us to perish, or failing that, go bankrupt and become dependent on them. 184 "A last minute foul up in the language on
unemployment insurance that could have led Bernie Sanders to block
passage evidently was ironed out and the bill sailed through by a near
unanimous vote"

I don't think this is correct, JJ. The Sasse amdt. was to fix that
language. It needed 60 votes to pass. Vote was 48-48. It failed so
the language in the bill remained.

Posted by: Tami at March 26, 2020 08:02 AM (cF8AT)

What happened was that Sanders was upset at the 3 GOP senators who were upset that the UI part would allow some people to collect more money on UI than if they were still working at their jobs. The Sasse amendment would have limited the amount of UI benefits a person receives under the bill to no more than 100% of a person's earnings prior to when this all started. The bill has a special $600 weekly benefit which will last for up to 4 months for anyone receiving traditional UI or receiving it under the new UI program for people who usually can't get traditional UI (like the self-employed and contractors). That new UI program lasts through the end of this year.

So Sanders threatened to hold up consideration of the bill (ie. make them start jumping through the procedural hoops, which would have taken days) until "stronger conditions are placed on the $500 billion corporate welfare fraud."
The vote that ended 48-48 was to adjust that UI language. Because they had that vote, Sanders stopped threatening to hold it up.

we keep seeing how many have it, but what is the percentage of people who feel bad that end up getting tested?
what percentage of those tested actually are sick?
what percentage of those who test positive need to go into the hospital?
what percentage of the hospitalized end up on ventilators in ICU?
all they are telling us is how many die.

I deal in numbers and stats. I need that rather than some number that's not related to any useful meaning.

277 Might I ask just where in the Hades does the Lincoln Center usually get its funding? Is it private donations? Is it gov't grants? I truly don't know. But I do know one thing. They better not have a "Foundation" attached to its name that donates any amount of $$ to politicians. If I had my way, there wouldn't be one thin dime of taxpayer money that would go to any organization that donates to politicians...but that would require common sense morals we just don't seem to have.

This is exactly why aid needs to be done in direct grants to individuals. With the way work is today, traditional UI doesn't apply to a huge number of people. It assumes a standard work situation as existed in the 50's and 60's, but that does not exist for a huge number of workers today, possibly even a majority.

Just got back from the grocery store. Wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Definitely busy for 7:00 AM on a Thursday morning. TP and paper towels were still unavailable (though they weren't on my list, so I didn't care). Mostly what I noticed is that while, yes, certain things were sold out, there was still plenty of food to be had (which I would expect, but the way some people are acting...) My only regret is that I bought breaded fish fillets, but forgot to pick up tartar sauce.

If that is truly the case then you have to expand it to contain the entire world. Every single infected country is practicing some sort of social distancing or whatever name you want to give it.

I really don't think that's the case. I think it was the natural response to a pandemic for which there is no current vaccine.

I read that book, it was ok. And by ok I am not saying much. The 80s and 90s were certainly not anti Confederate imo. You had The Dukes of Hazzard but so many other examples they could not be fully counted. One that has stuck with me is Doc Hollywood. A lefty movie made by lefties starring lefties. But still a black man waves a Confederate Flag in the parade. Why, because he is proud of his town in that day.

This thing may have started on a lsow burn in the 90s but it really only happened around 2014. I doubt anyone could have imagined how far they could take this. The funny thing is, some cities went off half cocked but others ignored it and not much has changed. Look at Virginia, show me one monument that has come down. But in Texas, LA, GA, NC, etc they brought many down in a huff.

I have a nuanced view on the subject and the discussion would take time and some back and forth. But that is not the society we live in. What we do know is it will not end at Confederates as they have already gone after George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and many who are from the North. I can see a day soon where The Alamo will be not a heroic loss but a victory.

I see it as an attack in history writ large. You watch any Civil War round table in the North like the famous one in Chicago, and all you see are gray hairs. The irony is when this blew up five or so years ago, no one gave a damn about the Civil War.

The 80s and 90s were wen people were actually interested in the history. You had Ken Burn's Civil War. You had the movie Gettysburg. You had the greatest increase in Civil War reenactors in decades. Now it is probably only going to be our National Park sites. And if the wrong people get in, maybe even those will be thrown into the dustbin of history.

I understand that, having done it myself at one point. Just as important as introspection is looking very honestly at lessons for others. For example, I have known a few pathological liars in my life, and what I learned was that they were so addicted to lying that they lied to themselves most of all. And a couple of them rose kind of high in society, before they blew themselves up. Their fall was great, when it came.

I suppose that in the end all one can say is that the best way to live is one where you can look at your own face in the mirror, every day, and not feel shame, or anger. If I can do that, I will die at peace, no matter the circumstances.

They did not give themselves raises. It is $25,000,000 for "Salaries and Expenses" and meant "to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, domestically or internationally, to be allocated in accordance with a spend plan submitted to the Committee on Appropriations of the House of Representatives by the Chief Administrative Officer and approved by such Committee."

That's a direct quote from the bill text. And a lot of other federal agencies got "salaries and expenses" funding for the very same reason. Salaries are for personnel.

If it was meant for raises for House members, the bill text would have explicitly said that.

I was speaking with my partner in Australia the other night. Australia has a similar federal system and they are doing the same sort of disjointed response as we are. Victoria is doing things differently from New South Wales, etc.. And then local government gets involved and has still different rules.

He has 3 daughters and parents were advised to keep their kids home if they wanted but they were told school would go on including exams. He obviously doesn't want his kids to be exposed but he doesn't want them falling behind either.

Great links on China today - even outside of the virus or those articles using it only as a hook.

I hope when it comes time to get back to campaigning, that Trump is very clear in his Trumpy way with, "Remember when I spent a decade talking about China and the threat from China and our need to decouple from China and then took various actions to start that process? Because I did. And it's time to triple-down on that. Vote for me and we'll get it done."

I am not a single-issue voter, but China has probably become my top issue. This virus debacle has exposed the level of rot "over there" and the level of industrial helplessness "over here" that has resulted from all of the offshoring to the Far East by the China and economic cultists. Currently, it's Life+70.

That's ridiculous on its face, and it's led to so many works simply falling into complete obscurity because no one even knows if the works are under copyright or not.

Irving Brant's six volume biography of James Madison is one of the best biographies I've ever read, and there hasn't been a copy printed in decades. Under the old regime of 28 years with the option to reup for another 28, it would have long ago entered the public domain and even I could make a copy of it and sell it or give it away on the internet.

Now? Not a chance in hell because I could end up getting sued by the actual copyright holder who just isn't doing anything with it. And the copyright holder isn't the author since he's been dead for decades.

Persona is fantastic, but intentionally hard to get. Bergman was never a real stylist, but he did output things that messed with timelines and perception majorly in experimental ways twice (the other is The Silence).

However, watching it and insisting that the stylistic things don't matter and it becomes clear what the story actually is, and it's very clear. It's about the limits of knowing another person. The only way the two women can understand each other is to become each other.

It's also possibly all in Liv Ullmann's head.

Trump could, if he really wanted, sign an executive order barring the results of any election for federal office if it isn't conducted in accordance with the Constitution.

The main point is that the Constitution lays out the date for the election. Trump can argue that the plain language and meaning in that document is that all voting is to occur simultaneously throughout the country, barring early voting. Also, he could make the case that voting, except in extreme circumstances, needs to be in person so that all can see that the voter is voting secretly and privately, without undue influence.

Might as well toss in positive identification as a citizen too.

If it's all in Ullmann's head, then it's a fight between two sides of herself, an internal struggle as she stands on the stage in the middle of the performance trying to sort through her issues.

They're mutual exclusive interpretations, not complimentary, but they both have textual bases.

I only got it on the third viewing when I said that I was going to view it as literally as possible.

And the bookends are thematic in nature, reinforcing the idea of separation between people as the little boy reaches out for the adult female face and his hand touches a screen. 536 >>FYI, her reference to "E" is that the chairperson of this commission is jointly appointed by the Speaker and the Senate Majority Leader. As in jointly appointed by Pelosi and McConnell.

Yep. They are still focused in leveraging this not only to implement every backburner Lefty policy, and lard up the usual donor institutions, but impeach Trump. The pain this pandemic is causing normies doesn't even factor into the equation.

Scorpion and frog level thinking here. Trump is trying to lead this country through a pandemic and all they care about is how best to destroy him over it. They are lower than pond scum.

Yep. Imagine if the Obama admin had taken H1N1 more seriously and there had been a Republican House demanding to know every detail of its response effort, complete with subpoena power. Democrats and the media would have gone insane.

539 Yes, there is a conflict of interest section that covers the president, VP, Cabinet members, and Members of Congress. It also covers their spouses, children, daughter-in-laws and son-in-laws as determined under applicable common law. I won't type out the legislative text, but essentially it's to make sure none of them benefit personally from bailout $$.

I watched Brian Kilmeade beclown himself on Fox this morning. He was hyper-ventilating and asking, "Why won't the rest of the nation give NYC all the ventilators???!!!! Reeeee!!!!" The 4-star admiral from FEMA kept his composure and replied that NY got 4000 ventilators yesterday and Cuomo hasn't even started getting the ventilators from the out-patient surgical centers.

I then realized that part of the reason the media has lost their minds (besides the default OrangeManBad! setting for most of them) is that it has registered in their reptilian brains that the Wuhan Lung Rot endangers THEM, not the deplorables in fly-over country.

543 Make no mistake, the virus was a coup against the United States primarily, and the West in general. Without Trump, they would have greatly succeeded.

546 hmm. how do you rank yourself? That is so 2020. I
was at a book sale recently that gave a free book to seniors and kids.
To be a senior you had to consider yourself a senior. No age
requirement, just if you identified as a senior.

The opposite
would be the Army Ranger training where they have to rank their buddies
and one will basically be tossed out of training over that alone.

---------------------Everyone gets the same list. You rate the guy above your name high. The guy below your name you rate low. No one gets peered out. This is how my squad did it in Ranger school.
