The Morning Report - 3/23/20

amermalig.jpg

Good morning, kids. A new week and the nation remains in a bizarre state of limbo courtesy of the Chinese communists who inflicted, unwittingly or otherwise, a viral contagion upon us and the world. As a New York City resident, I've always wished I didn't have to endure the incessant din of street noise, traffic and sirens that although one grows accustomed to, nevertheless finds irritating. I guess now I'm getting my wish, only in Monkey's Paw fashion. To put it mildly, the silence is extremely unsettling. And while I'm free to leave my apartment to relieve cabin fever, there's nowhere to go to. Streets are deserted, traffic is virtually nonexistent and the people you encounter seem to be walking around in a daze. I smile and nod, or say hello, even sing or whistle a few bars of an upbeat tune (which is something I normally do anyway). Maybe it helps, if not the passersby then at least me in that moment. Forget the medical aspects of this Chinese coronavirus. The long-term effects on our collective psyche are going to be something we'll be reckoning with well into the future.

Anyway, I've really not got much more to say on this that I have not expressed over the past week or so since this plague of fear of the unknown, exacerbated and in my view instigated by the Democrat-Media Complex fell on us like a pall. Whatever natural consequences to our health and well-being we have to deal with (and for me, I am still highly skeptical of the real health risks compared with flu and other similar viral outbreaks of the recent and distant past) what the latter have done, and continue to do to exploit this crisis for their own political gain is beyond criminal; it's pure evil.

Let's unpack the links, because if I add anything more to my declamation, Ace will no doubt fire my ass just before I get a visit from the FBI.

NOTE: The opinions expressed in some links may or may not reflect my own. I include them because of their relevance to the discussion of a particular issue.

12 If we take one important lesson from COVID-19, it will overwhelm the current downturn with a meteoric rise in markets, employment, and well being. We need to bring manufacturing back to this country. If we spend the next 10 years building factories in the US, we will see the biggest boom in the economy since post WWII.

15 "His comments over the past few weeks that have fueled the media's feeding frenzy are in sharp contrast over his words and deeds 10 years ago during the H1N1 outbreak."

The math on this is quite a bit different than H1N1 and the level of care required for severe cases is substantially different. With the flu, you're mainly pushing fluids. With this, oxygen support is required. The equipment needed for that is much more involved and much more limited. It is relatively trivial to expand IV capacity. It is difficult to expand ventilator capacity. And once we reach capacity, the mortality rate goes up substantially. I believe that accounts for a good bit of the change in tone. Whether or not those factors would have born or will bear out is another matter. It's just not apples-to-apples.

18 Then COVID-19 came up on the radar, a really scary-sounding flu-like virus. The first official American case, according to the CDC, was reported on January 12. But impeachment was happening, so no one cared.

1,000% of the blame for the deaths in the US needs to be laid at the feet of Pelosi and Schumer. ABC, NBC, and CNN need to rent their clothes and lie in ashes.

I hope the tears of the Deep Staters that not just allowed but encouraged this to happen live long, lonely, unfulfilled lives waking early each and having long sleepless night knowing they betrayed fellow citizens.

19 JJ, regarding your comments on living in NYC right now: my daughter is actually pretty happy there. She's fully stocked up on food and other supplies. She goes out once a day in the morning for a jog, then settles in at home. She checks in with all her grandparents and great aunts, her friends, and us. She said the only people she sees out and about are health care workers (she lives near a hospital) and families out for a walk with their children. Best of all, it doesn't smell like weed everywhere like it usually does.

I have to say she's making the most of her situation, and good for her. Getting a lot of reading done, etc.

26 Ford, GM given go ahead to make ventilators...

Knowing this industry, the last place you want to go to have something made is Ford and GM.

Back in the old days, the auto companies had internal abilities to do things like shifting from cars to bombers. That doesn't exist anymore. Ford and GM don't really have the ability to engineer and produce cars anymore without the technical and physical help of their suppliers.

If there was anything to this fantasy of getting a new player in the ventilator market up and running before the crisis is over, it would be one of a dozen tier 1 suppliers closer to the technologies needed.

Ford and GM could only introduce a level of bureaucracy to the process.

52 Yes, Pence mentioned we were halfway through the critical 15 day period, now Trump is tweeting it. This is critical: gives an endpoint. Not to the whole thing, but to the current level of uncertainty, which was made so much worse when so many schools and other institution decided not to wait, but instead cancelled everything for the foreseeable future.

I mentioned the "halfway there!" milestone to my kid last night when he was stressing about school never resuming. He's also checked other schools in the areas websites and they are walking back their "OMG, the semester is cancelled!" declarations.

Chill pill deployed.

90 the two former biowarfare guys, (military/government, now university) give the best overall discussion of the reason for the social distancing ... intensely for a couple weeks as we find the best anti-virals for this specific virus. The cover why developing the herd immunity is too slow, and why it was wrong for the UK.

As we've said here 2-3 weeks ago, the problem was going to be the overwhelming numbers that need special care, when the outbreak reaches peak. If it overwhelms the care availability, death rate could go much higher. It is not Armageddon in any case, but we'd prefer to only lose 10,000, not 1-2 million. (even if they are mostly boomers like me ... heh)the kids that are partying are likely going to be spreading it far and wide ... they need to be informed ... video makes the suggestion of interviews with young people in Italy that lost family and coworkers ... put that on social media. Here we are at home, connecting to others around the world virtually rather than physically. That is terrible for the airlines but good for the planet. It may be good for us, too. A five-hour conference that I participated in last week matched a physical conference very closely, complete with breakout rooms and individual conversations. One of the greatest stories from this crisis will be all of the American countries who have joined the Trump team and switched from whatever their core business it to manufacture or facilitate much needed goods and services. It is a fabulous display of American spirit and what can be achieved when the two sides work together.

NONE--NOT ONE DAMNED ONE--of the actual facts match up and justify the extreme measures, shredding the Constitutional rights, destroying the economy

If I predicted, "next year, the flu will hasten the death of 4,000 additional people who are of advanced age or already have respiratory disease" would you say that justified trillions in economic damage to save, maybe half?

146 the biowarfare experts I linked to say the high estimates in the millions are high end ... mostly the nightmare scenarios do not account for actions being taken, and new treatments that will "bend the curve". And other natural factors are also unknown, which may already be limiting the potential final numbers (as in, what if most people get it and show no symptoms, are naturally resistant enough that it wouldn't even show up on a test)

And the curve may not just be flattened (same number infected, but over a longer time) ... but the total that need hospital time may be greatly reduced, when the right anti-virals and other meds are found to be effective in stopping the viral spread. (several are being used and outcomes studied). We will know much more in a week or two.

209 "I am interested to know (except for the panic): In what way is this more
serious that the seasonal flu that hospitalizes tens or hundreds of
thousands and kills thousands?"

there is some herd immunity to the seasonal flu(s) ... and there are vaccines every year. The death rate for the Novel virus is higher (probably at least 5x higher) ... and not as many flu patients need more intensive care.

The big problem with this one, since it is new, it has a virgin population to attack (if there is a degree of herd immunity, fine, that would be a favorable unknown). But with large numbers being infected, and a large percent of those (20%?) needing hospital treatment, the probability of overwhelming the care system is high ... and could turn the death rate into an Italy like 8% (is that 8% of those 20% in hospital? I forget, but 2% is still 20x the flu death rate).

Two things: given what I understand about this particular strain of virus as well as other viruses, the death rate, infection rate and recovery rate (whatever that may be), this seems unwarranted, being prepared notwithstanding. And we are being lied to in the media so being prepared, even like this, I guess is a good thing. So far, I am just not hearing mass ambulances nor seeing reports of the emergency wards overflowing and people dropping in the streets.

Second, and more poignantly, this reminds me of the triage and emergency doctors waiting at the hospital doors in the hours after 9/11 for all the victims to come rolling in en masse. But they never came.

235 Before moving away from the good doctor, it should be noted that his
comments over the past few weeks that have fueled the media's feeding
frenzy are in sharp contrast over his words and deeds 10 years ago
during the H1N1 outbreak. He downplayed that and along with Obama's
dithering incompetence and a media that was eager to cover it up, the
result was 60 million infected, over 300,000 hospitalized and 17,000
dead. Funny how there were no panic headlines, no quarantines and no
stock market crash back then, but now with a death toll of perhaps 300
or so, America is being put into a forced coma while its guts are ripped
out.

THIS! I keep asking people do you even remember H1N1? Most people they say vaguely. They can't really remember it being a big deal or treated as a big deal

255 Also, if the Senate has votes at noon there will be two procedural votes and if those succeed the Senate will have a redo of yesterday's vote. Yesterday's vote was just to limit the time allowed to debate whether or not the Senate should formally consider the bill, which is a House-passed bill that is supposed to serve as the "vehicle" for the text of the relief legislation. With 5 GOP senators out of commission, if everyone else is there they will need 12 Democrats to vote yes to get to 60.

If they get 60, then they're in position to vote to proceed to the bill at some point in the following 30 hours. If that vote succeeds (only need a majority for that one) then the Senate is on the bill and the amendment containing the relief legislation will be offered to it. Unless the Democrats decide to cooperate and skip a few hurdles, there would possibly be up to 2 more cloture votes before the Senate could pass the bill, as amended.

I remember it from getting it and my 5 year old getting it. It was barely a cold for me but he got REALLY sick. Was close to being hospitalized and needed theraflu, steroids, antibiotics, an inhaler, etc. He got worse as the week wore on after seeing the doctor and I drove across town to find the SAME doctor he'd seen on Monday to SHOW him how much worse he was. Several of his kindergarten classmates were in the hospital. Scared the shit out of me. But there was a vaccine at that point although in short supply and you needed 2 doses plus a wait period. He had had 1 dose.

we aren't al!owed to examine.

Per the CDC - and I just checked - 200 deaths out of 15,000 cases. The number of cases continues to climb much faster than deaths as we learn, get this, it's a virus that feels like the flu unless you've already got health problems. Then it can kill you pretty much like pneumonia.

But - be afraid - be very afraid. The explainers will be along shortly to tell you why. Until the explainers start getting shouted down, this panic will continue.

--- Population of Italy: 60,485,957

Data collection in America is still centered around those showing symptoms. We were behind in starting testing (I guess the NYC health officials having parades in Chinatown was more important than securing tests), so we haven't really reached the stage where any actual randomized data collection is happening.

298 besides flattening the curve now ... the extra time before the exponential growth begins to turn and slow ... will be time to choose the best anti-virals and co-treatments to stop the virus from sending so many to emergency care. If the virus is thwarted internally (the rna blocked from replicating in the cells, or any breaking of the viral process) ... then that has saved the day.

I'm hopeful for the one Trump promoted, but there are many other possible anti-virals, already used, tested and approved ... for other viruses. Trump already saved the day by blocking China travelers from China ... and he can campaign on that along with all the hate he got from Biden and Dems for being racist (saving America is racist, of course)

353 I hope everyone realizes that flattening the curve means nothing to the Left and media. As long as ONE person a day is contracting the virus, we need to panic and shut down the economy. This will not stop.

Posted by: Dan Smoot's Apprentice

Exactly. And think about what that means for the states where there is already a "stay-at-home" order in place and where they have closed restaurants and bars and such for anything other than pick-up, drive-thru or delivery.

The more we test, the more they are going to find more cases. So long as there's 1 case reported, this hysteria and panic will not allow Governors to open up their states again.

H1N1 had cases for a year, from Apr '09 through Apr '10, if I remember correctly.

Unless I am missing something, this "crisis" is not going to be over in "15 days". We're looking at months of this, like Cuomo stated the other day.

And then if it lasts through OCT, then we're into seasonal flu season. And the precedent is already set for crashing the economy to save lives. So better keep things shut down through a season that, on average, kills 20,000+ Americans every year.

377 The president brought our economy back once. He historically moved business back to America before this crisis. Now, with the push to bring more critical industries back, and to rebuild our economy again, nobody could be more trusted to do that than President Trump.

Compare this to the Democrats presidential candidate who not only doesn't know where he is most days, but who demonstrably helped moved businesses to China and whose son got a large payday from them. When the smoke starts to clear, this won't be a small matter. Neither will what Democrats in the House and Senate are doing to take advantage of this crisis while people need help. It's the most despicable combination our nation has seen in a long time.

Well, I happen to really like some of these part-time neighbors so I was

Then last night I see on FB that they are bashing PDT and blaming

ringleaders of this just so happen to be Canadians. Yes. NOT
Americans.

379 I hope everyone realizes that flattening the curve means nothing to the Left and media.

The panic mongers will cover their own asses by saying the only reason we're not full on The Road and eating long pork is because of the over-reaction. The normals that believe everything will always work out will accept anything as confirmation that it always works out. Anybody raising Hell about this self inflicted political gunshot to our collective national economic dick will be told to shut up, just like the early bitchers of the Patriot Act.

I'm afraid we, as a society, will accept anything that our political class demands. I always thought empty store shelves would be the break point. As it turns out, nope. Not so much.
