Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon pet and animal lovers and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Forget about Kung Fu Flu, the leftards and enjoy the world pets. Let us talk about happy times and memories of pets and leave the current events to a different thread.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Well our regular contributors obviously have a life and I didn't hear from them. So the links this afternoon are scarce.

Sexual cannibalism.

***

Is this one of those things that sounds good on paper and backfires spectacularly?

***

Who says cats can't be helpful?

Meet The PetMorons

The In-Box was a little sparse this week.

IMG_8553.jpg

This little girl showed up Friday afternoon. My son found her at his college. We will be her third owners - the previous folks just didn’t have the time to care for her properly. She’s a bit undersized but is fairly energetic, and has already won us over. Here she’s enjoying a heated rock, a heat lamp and a couple of high output UV-B lamps. - Chris?

This submission came from a person who didn't identify himself or give us a name for the PetMoron. If you're around today, come on out and tell us about yourself and this Rescue Dragon.

Got new buddy from local pound (Hillsborough county Fl). last fall was tough, euthanized 2 gsd’s one for hip displasia and one with
Canine degenerative myelopathy. This is 1 yr old Günter. Hope he has a long healthy life. - Unidentified Proud Pet Owner.

Gunter's human forgot to give us his name today. It's miserable to put down a pet. It's really miserable to put down two in a season. This guy looks like a wonderful companion. Here's hoping for a happy and healthy life.

Knut Shark (1).jpg

Howdy Mis. Hum. Long time lurker trapped behind enemy lines in NY. Wanted to be part of the Pet Thread and share some pics of our rescue dog with fellow morons & ettes. Really the doggie rescued me and the wife and made living here bearable.

This is Knut with a hard K. The wife is German and named him after an orphaned polar bear raised at the Berlin Zoo. You could kinda see a resemblance to a polar bear when he was a pup. At least that's what the wife said. I dunno. Check the Welcome Knut pic and decide for yourself.

He's a golden retriever/lab mix. We found him in a shelter in a cage sitting under a water bottle with water dripping on his head and I knew he was my guy. His front left paw is splayed out to the left which is probably why he was given up in the first place. Doesn't seem to bother him although he can't run very fast or for very long.

Knut has a great life. He's six now and loves to go swimming. His backyard is a bay and two blocks south is the ocean. The first pic is him wearing his safety goggles because as you can see in the second pic he sometimes encounters wildlife on his journeys.

Thanks for the Pet Thread. It really starts Saturday off in an upbeat way.

Sincerely,

Botched_Lobotomy

PS - No sand sharks were harmed as Knut has no idea what to do with slimy, wiggling things on the beach and this guy was helped back into the ocean where he'll probably grow into a great white and return to bite me one day.

Thanks for contacting us. Knut may not be the perfect dog but he's perfect for you and that is all that matters. We appreciate your kind words here at the Pet Thread.

This is my rescue pup Jet. She is now 1 1/2 years old and came out of the Wind River reservation up in Wyoming. These images were taken around 9 months of age, and we have had her a year now.
Macknabs are a willful breed and need firm training, but they’re smart and gifted herd dogs. She is gentle with chickens and other fowl, but will nail a back-talking calf or cow in a heartbeat.
What she really loves though is killing rats, as the lower image demonstrates. All in all a super dog all the way. - Cliff Dweller

It certainly looks like you have quite the working companion there. It is how amazing dogs can thrive if they are placed into the right environment. Thanks for sharing.

20200315_092447.jpg

This is my sisters cat Fiona, Fifi for short. Fifi came into my sisters life about 15ish years ago and has been spoiled rotten ever since. Fifi is kind of mean. She doesn't have a lot of love for her fellow man, but she certainly loves my sister. In this pic she is showing her love! - Jennifer

So that's love? Perhaps a reason to visit the ER? J/K. Its good to know you get along with your sister and are impressed by Fifi. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mis Hum.

Thanks for the pet thread. I love how there are so many morons who love animals. This is our 11 month old German Shepherd, Luca. He's one of the happiest dogs we've ever had. He's my therapy dog in a sense. Coming home from a road trip and being greeted by him is a blessing. He's also a great protector of our family. Here he is doing his Winston Churchill imitation. - RedinaBlueState

Wow, 2 GSD today in the Pet Thread! Awesome looking pup there Red. You know what millions of pet owners know, pets are therapy animals. Thanks for the kind words. We appreciate you reaching out with Luca's story.

Had this fine feline visit me in southeast Calgary, Alberta late in February
No pet, but a magnificent (bob)cat nonetheless

That is quite the sighting. Bobcats are one of those mysterious animals that don't show themselves that often. Great timing at the right place. Thanks for thinking of us!

32 My cats are shedding. When I say "shedding" I mean I comb a pile of fur the size of an orange out of each of them every day. The house is neck-deep in cat fur. It sticks to my face and I have to de-fur the bed every morning. One of them gets hairballs if she's not combed every day and another one gets intestinal blockages. The Furminator cleans them up on Monday and by Tuesday they're spitting out hunks of fur. Even Pete, the new shorthaired sort-of-Siamese is shedding like mad. One of the few reasons to hate Spring.

I have been so thankful for my kitteh crew during this isolation stint. They keep me focused in the present, and are plenty of good company (since I'm an introvert.) I'll have to send pics for next week's thread; I keep meaning to, and forgetting.

45 Even Pete, the new shorthaired sort-of-Siamese is shedding like mad.

One reason I'm glad both of my cats are shorthaired-- although Casey has been leaving more than the usual amount of fur on the carpets and the cat bed. OTOH, I can leave the windows open during the day, now that the weather has warmed up, and the cats enjoy sitting on the sills and conducting surveillance on the neighbors.

Our dogs have been golden retrievers, one of whom weighed 120 lbs., and the other 85 lbs., so they weren't exactly lap dogs. Although the former one thought he was, and regularly used to pile into my lap!

50 I should send a pic of the BobKittuh I saw on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It just slinked out onto the road. It was hunting and I had stopped the car to watch. About 0800 in the morning. Didn't pay me any mind at until it lost track at what it was hunting. It then looked up, looked at me (taking pictures with my phone through the car window), and then continued the hunt. Didn't care a bit I was there. A magnificent Kittuh! Looked about the size of a midsize dog (female lab maybe? I'm not up on dog species sizes). Anyway, Big Kittuh.

56 No.1 son texted from Wal-Mart a couple hours back that he thinks people are hoarding parakeet food. He managed to nab the second from the last bag.

He has a whole flock of keets in a in a really big cage. People donate them to him when they get tired of them or find them. Last summer, the XO and I grabbed one at our bird feeder and donated it to him. It wasn't the first to visit our feeders. The Omaha Zoo isn't that far from us, and during the summer it has a walk in cage filled with keets. The zoo does its best, but I'm sure a few manage to sneak out. If course, it could have come from somebody's house.

57 So here's my current Conor story.
He's an independent "thinker" and very hard to train, so I always have him on a harness and long lead. In he yard, he usually stays nearby when I drop the lead and do a chore.
Yesterday we went out and I dropped the lead and started raking some leaves from the drive while Conor say and watched.
Went around a bend in the driveway and realized Conor was out of sight so went back towards the garage to see no Conor anywhere.
Started calling his name and walking in the most probable direction he might have taken. Still no Conor. Backtracked and went completely around the house. Still no Conor.
Frantically started to phone daughter to get over here quickly so we could start a neighborhood search but it went to voice mail. Texted her to call me as I walked back to the garage area.
As I stood there planning my next search pattern, Conor appeared from the transmogrifier he obviously used to disappear for a few minutes. I still have no idea how he did that or where he was while I was searching.

Very scary for me, and needless to say, he got some hugs, belly rubs, and treats after that!

Vet arranged for continuing medications for two of the Old Crew -- the vitamins, etc. we can get online so no worries there.

Interesting that the Vet is considered essential, but they told me, and it makes sense, because they are a surgery facility and do public health animal control. Very nice. Considering the local human doctors, I am hoping that if anything truly bad happens, we humans here are also patients of our local vet.

Local grocery, pharmacy, vet, and hardware store are open for regular business.

I think folks are hoarding pet food for all species. I went shopping yesterday; had no trouble finding what I needed, but I noticed that the pet food aisle had some odd shortages. There were still plenty of loose cans of cat food, also lots of cat treats-- but the boxed assortments of Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Sheba had been cleaned out. And while the smaller bags of kibble were available, the larger bags (16 and 20 lb. for cats, the equivalent sizes for dogs) were almost completely gone. At least there was a good supply of kitty litter (so far).

95 Our lab puppy is now almost 8 months old and 60 pounds. He is coming along with his training. Unfortunately, he has an undeveloped gastrointestinal immune system. Poor thing has been treated for parasites four times. He also keeps getting diarrhea which is a real treat for me to clean up. We have him on a prescription food now. He should outgrow it, but it sure is a pain to deal with. Good thing he is super cute.

Purrs and skritches for Lucy from my two kittehs. I know all too well that cats don't enjoy moving. They prefer familiar surroundings-- that's why my vet advises people who need a cat sitter to have the sitter come to their house rather than board the cat(s) at the sitter's house.

Just got a poop garbage can and rake (to go along with regular small shovel and pincer thingie) so by the end of the week the quantum household will have a poop clear yard. I am somewhat worried that some busybody will cite us to public health or something. Yes, I am one of those people who cries when the snow melts. Snowmelt is not a harbinger of spring, but compacted poop and major cleanup. Sadz.

102 Here's my doggeh story today:

One of my bulldogs is pretty neurotic, and is apparently pretty sensitive to chemicals. This morning, while he was napping, I fixed a squeaky storm door with WD-40. Later, he got up and was ready to go out to pee, but was visibly alarmed and started barking and growling when he got near that door, and ran away from it, and hasn't gone near it since. He's completely freaked about it.

Thank goodness we have another back door for him to use.
