My father had a crossed-out tattoo on his forearm.
Over the years, several times I asked him what it originally said. He refused to talk about it. To this day, I don't know what the tattoo originally depicted or said. He's a gazillion years old now, and yet the crossed out tattoo is still faintly visible. It all looked very primitively done, like a prison tattoo made with a ball-point pen. Knowing my father, I wouldn't be surprised if it WAS a prison tattoo made with a ball-point pen. Posted by: zombie at March 11, 2020 06:59 PM (N9G0H) 120

I believe those are called the three primary hues. Hues, like paint, are subtractive, in that a color paint appears that color by NOT reflecting other shades of light. @91: "i thought the 3 basic colors were Red, Blue and Yellow?"
Supposedly, television engineers went with red, green, and blue because they most closely approximate the wavelengths that the three types of human eye cone cells can perceive. It's just a matter of blending intensity across those three wavelength peaks to give the illusion of other colors. Posted by: ace No, I think you're slightly misunderstanding it. The "color wheel" is based on actual physics, and the three "primaries" are red, blue and yellow. The "red/blue/green" spectrum is NOT based on reality/physics, but instead on some cultural artifact of humans. I forget what, exact -- maybe the colors that cathode ray tubes can emit, or something like that. It is not equal, or parallel, or equivalent to the reality based red/blue/yellow primaries. Red, blue, yellow allow you to mix into the other colors. The other colors cannot be mixed into red, blue, yellow. That's what makes them primary.
You can mix purple out of red and blue, but no mixture of tints whatsoever creates red. In paint, at least. The more you mix, the more brown it gets. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 11, 2020 07:08 PM (KZzsI) 212

What brought up beavers? But that reminds me of the good old days right after I got out the Navy. Me and my little brother would take his boat and camping gear to the river on some nights. We would run up and down the river shooting beavers and hauling them into the boat (and that's tuff job because they are heavy and tend to turn the boat over.) So what was the purpose of shooting them and haling them back to town. The county farm association would pay a $5 bounty on each of them because they were so destructive of farm land located near the river and feeder streams when they flooded them out.

@168: "Is that where we get "four color printing" from?"
Yup, and one of the greatest computing challenges throughout the late '80s and early '90s was figuring out the differences between how colors looked on a computer screen, and how they appeared on a properly calibrated four color printing press. Literal metric fucktons of money was spent trying to figure out that problem in the digital pre-press and commercial printing industry. Seems trivial nowadays, but it was anything but. 167 @91: "i thought the 3 basic colors were Red, Blue and Yellow?"
Supposedly, television engineers went with red, green, and blue because they most closely approximate the wavelengths that the three types of human eye cone cells can perceive. It's just a matter of blending intensity across those three wavelength peaks to give the illusion of other colors. Posted by: Walter Freeman Thank you! That's it. We kept the RGB system as a ridiculous/unnecessary cultural remnant from the early days of television, even though it is no longer rational or serves any purpose. @199: "You can do pretty good color with 4 ink printers but high end printers may have 8, 10, 12 or more colors of ink for better and more vivid color reproduction."
Yeah, commercial printing is kinda fun when you get into the production details. For example, back in the day, AT&T had a very specific blue color they used for their 2D globe logo, and it was often more cost effective to print the logo with a fifth ink blended to that exact color, overlaid on top of the usual CMYK. And, yeah, if you get into photorealistic printing, rather than newspaper and junk mail type printing, then there are specific color shades that just won't "pop" without additional color inks. Many shades of greens, and gradients from one type of green to another, are notoriously hard to get right with CMYK alone. Then there are metallic inks, semi-transparent inks, glosses, etc., and the different ways you can layer everything from the paper upwards, and boy oh boy, paper doesn't always have to be pure white either, and underlying paper types change the way colors appear too. One of my personal theories about Bloomberg's candidacy was him wanting to preempt Hillary entering the race in case of a contested convention or Biden falling ill late in the process. He never expected to win, but actually being in the race, spending as much personal money as he did, and promising to spend more in case of emergency, all gave him a moral claim that she couldn't top. Closing schools isn't about saving the kids. Thankfully, this strain of coronavirus has very little impact on children; few outward symptoms, almost zero mortality. 405 @199: "You can do pretty good color with 4 ink printers but high end printers may have 8, 10, 12 or more colors of ink for better and more vivid color reproduction."
People voted for Trump because they hated Hillary more, not because they liked him.
Now Trump is outright hated and is facing an incredibly likable opponent. It's a disastrous matchup for the Pres and he needed a roaring economy and booming stock market so he could ask voters "are you better off than you were four years ago" and they'd answer yes. He can still run on the judiciary, but that's the only weapon in his arsenal. Posted by: greggg at March 11, 2020 07:43 PM (0Ojhb) LOL Posted by: Mr. Feverhead at March 11, 2020 07:53 PM (L1HY4) 548

@527: "But hey, let's just shut down the country, because."
Long story short: No one can stop or prevent this coronavirus bug. It spreads too quickly, and they won't get a vaccine into mass production soon enough to save people. They're just trying to slow things down. Public health types call it "flattening the curve." Meaning, you make the peak number of cases smaller, especially those that require hospitalization, and you try to spread out all of the severe cases over a longer period of time, so you don't overwhelm the capacity of the health care system. That's why they're freaking out so much at the beginning. They don't think everyone is going to die. They just wanna manage how quickly (slowly) those that will inevitably die, do die in a more manageable fashion, so people who can be saved don't fall through the cracks. *shrugs* Posted by: Walter Freeman at March 11, 2020 07:56 PM (+oVP5) Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 11, 2020 07:58 PM (miJU3) 554
