Gun Thread: The CMP 1911A1! [Weasel]

CMP Logo.jpg

Last week, our pal The Walking Dude reported taking delivery of a surplus 1911A1 from the CMP. Whoa! What gives?! A 1911 from the CMP?! Who doesn't want some of that action? Let's find out more below, shall we?

NOTE: I'll be checking in periodically during the thread this evening so please don't burn the place down, 'kay? Remember, you're all Gun Thread Safety Officers!

******

According to their website, The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is a national organization dedicated to training and educating U. S. citizens in responsible uses of firearms and airguns through gun safety training, marksmanship training and competitions. The CMP is a federally chartered 501(c)(3) corporation that places its highest priority on serving youth through gun safety and marksmanship activities that encourage personal growth and build life skills.

They also do really cool stuff like selling and repairing old martial arms!

Yep. That's right. In a 2 year pilot program allowed under 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, surplus 1911 semi-automatic pistols were released to the CMP for sale to the public. Apparantly, the government was spending $2 million per year to store 100,000 surplus 1911s which had been replaced in 1985 by the Beretta M9. Here's a 2018 article on the program from the American Rifleman Magazine.

Anyhoo, Mr Lucky-pants Walking Dude jumped through all the right hoops and was a lottery winner, and agreed to his story:

Every year the CMP will receive up to 10,000 1911A1 pistols from military arsenals for sale to the public. The funds from these sales will support CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) programs. Pistols are inspected and sorted into 3 grades (rack, field and Service ). People who wanted to purchase a 1911 pistol submitted an application packet to the CMP. Packets were assigned a random generated lottery number The initial lottery they are still working through had almost 20,000 applications with lottery numbers assigned. When your lottery number comes up you are contacted by phone or email and provide payment prior to shipment. Two background checks are performed, an initial background check prior to shipment and another at the 01 firearms dealer the pistol is shipped to. I had submitted my packet in Sept of 2018 and was assigned lottery number 11,7xx. The scuttlebutt I'm hearing is that in 18-24 months they will be taking new applications.

For more information see 1911 Information - Civilian Marksmanship Program

Well danged if this isn't Gun Thread worthy! One of our own Morons scores and scores bigly! Congratulations, The Walking Dude! Can we see some pictures?

As promised here are some photos of the 1911A1 I just got from the CMP. Years ago I waited too long to order a M-1 Carbine and one day they were gone never to be seen again at that price so I did not make that same mistake with the M-1 Garands and now the 1911's they offer. I really wanted a war time 1911A1 because my Dad carried one through France and all the way into Berlin when it fell. He actually got a marksmanship medal for it, a pin that looked like a little 1911A1, in addition to the marksmanship medal for rifle which is a musket in a long blue box with a wreath. He said not many people qualified for the marksmanship medal for the 1911A1. He passed away in 2017. We are losing the greatest generation as they march off into time. Not many of them left.

Man, ain't that the truth. Great story, The Walking Dude, and thank you for sharing it with us. Now let's see those pictures!

TWD 1 scaled.jpg

Shipped in a lockable case which much better than the cases used to ship M-1 Garands.

***

TWD 2 scaled.jpg

Nice foam insert with cutouts for the pistol and magazine.

***

TWD 3 scaled.jpg

As a gun collector you learn pretty early that you need to look in every nook and cranny of these boxes. Underneath all the foam was an Amry tech manual for the M1911A1 and a lock to safely secure the pistol from young'uns.

TWD 4 scaled.jpg

Markings right side. US govt property mark , SN (the large O in No. without a line under it indicates its the last marking iteration used by Remington Rand when they resumed production in 1943). From researching the SN it left the factory in March of 1945. To the left of the top of the grip if you look closely you can see partial stamp of the ordnance dept inspection (crossed cannons) which started appearing on pistols in 1942. Partial stampings of this are common. The 8 or & upper right of trigger and the J or 0 on the trigger guard directly below the trigger are some sort of factory inspection marks. I don't know what they mean yet and am still researching those.

***

TWD 5 scaled.jpg

Left side of pistol- last of 3 iterations of Remington Rand Slide marking (shorter than the slide stop) which was used from SN 980000 until end of production. Notice P proof mark near magazine release button to right of trigger. Also notice the FJA to the upper right of triggers which are the inspectors Initials (Col Frank J Atwood) only found on Remington Rand and Ithaca frames.

***

TWD 6 scaled.jpg

Top of slide and magazine heel- Notice P proof mark on top of slide to the right of the rear sight. The markings on the barrel indicate it is a govt contract barrel made after 1949 ".45 auto" and "7791193 " The 7791193 is the govt contract number. The magazine markings indicate it is a post WWII govt contract magazine made by Checkmate Industries.

***

TWD 7 scaled.jpg

Disaasembled - the C in a box on the bottom of the barrel Lug indicates the post 1949 govt contract barrel was made by Colt.

***

TWD 8 scaled.jpg

Barrel lug - other side.

***

TWD 9 scaled.jpg

Barrel Rifling- looks like new or very little use to me.

For more info on markings follow the Cool Gun Site link where you can find out a lot about these pistols.

The Walking Dude goes on to mention the CMP currently has lend/lease M-1 Garands returned from the Philippines for sale and he is waiting for a Winchester rack grade special which should ship out in a few weeks. For more information on the Garands they have see M1 Garand - Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Most of us remember Neon Madman as a collector of rare and unusual cartridges which he frequently shares with us. Well, he's obviously a pretty damn good shooter, too! I'll let his target speak for itself:

NMM target scaled.jpg

Damn, man! That's some nice shooting right there! What gun were you using?

NMM K38 scaled.jpg

Sweet! A Smith & Wesson revolver, and a K38 to be exact. Neon Madman tells us:

I am mainly a target shooter, favoring .22 and .38 Special. I mainly shoot revolvers in single-action mode with a two handed hold and factory iron sights, although I'll also occasionally break out one of the autoloaders for variety. I sometimes save my good targets to take along and show to my dad when I go to check on the old folks on Sunday nights. The attached target is from a week ago, and is a personal best - 6 shots of .38 wadcutter from my old K-38 at 25 feet.

Those of you who have been reading here for long will know I'm a big fan of Smith & Wesson revolvers, and the K38 model in particular. They do not call this the Masterpiece for no good reason! I have lots of old guns and lots of new guns but for dead level accuracy and the simple joy of shooting, it's hard to beat the K38.

Very nicely done, Neon Madman, and be glad you have your dad around to show your targets to. Thank you for sending this in!

Not all threats to your gun rights come directly as a frontal assault on the 2nd Amendment. With alarming frequency, privately owned gun ranges and shooting clubs are being dragged into court over noise complaints and safety concerns. In many cases, these facilities have operated safely for years, a fact the sometimes new "neighbors" often brought to an area by urban sprawl, typically fail to appreciate.

A good example of the clash between neighbors and shooting ranges is the Panteo Sportsman's Club in Lexington, SC which has been taken to court by residents in their area. As reported here, the range owners assert they are operating safely and the neighbors claim to be living in a war zone.

People have a right to be safe on their own property, but people also probably shouldn't locate near a shooting range if they don't like the sound of gunfire. These situations will only continue to occur with increasing frequency. What do you think is the solution?

A big thanks to our pal Will, a member of the Panteo Sportsman's Club, for sending this in!

NoVaMoMe 2020!!

For those who might've missed it, NoVaMoMe 2020 was announced to great fanfare a few days ago. The NoVaMoMe, a Weaselbell Production, is pretty much the social event of the season, and one you simply cannot afford to miss! Well, at least it's the can't miss social event for May 9th between 5pm and 10pm in the small geographic region of Fairfax, Virginia. All of the details and instructions for claiming a spot can be yours simply by emailing the Central Planning Committee at the link provided on the main page, left sidebar; novamome2020 at gmail dot cee oh mmm. The email address is also usually linked in our nics. As of Saturday, we're about halfway to the 100 person maximum capacity of the new and exciting venue.

Our best buddy and planner/hostess extraordinaire bluebell was quoted recently regarding the big event:

There will be plenty of Horde spouses at the MoMe, some of whom read the blog, some of whom don't, and some completely apolitical. I want to assure everyone that MoMes are a place to relax and have fun and meet your grey-box friends in person, and rarely does politics even come up! Think of it as a big family reunion, only with people you actually like.

Totally not at shiv-point, I vigorously agree with all of bluebell's comments. For the introverts and lurkers out there, its a very casual, low-key, and FUN affair. I have been to a bunch of these around the country, and can honestly say nobody comes away thinking it wasn't a great time. Some people mingle and others don't. If hiding behind a plant in the corner and just observing is your thing, have at it! If dancing naked on a folding chair with Cheetos stuck in your nose is how you like to roll, you can do that too! You can be as involved or as barely involved as you like. I swear you will enjoy yourself, and if you don't believe me, which is always smart, you can completely believe bluebell!

Don't be a sad, sad loser, and miss an evening of food, drink, laughs and valuable prizes! Register today!

7 Someone asked last week for more detail on the quail hunting trip I took last weekend.

We were hunting just south of the Red River near Wichita Falls, Texas. I had a side by side 12 gauge and junior had a side by side 20. Our guide brought his dogs, a pointer and a retriever. The pointer was a German Shorthair and the retriever was a Pudelpointer. The area where we were hunting is periodically seeded with quail raised with limited human contact, so they retain most of their instinct, and mix well with the limited number of wild birds in the area.

The hunt began with a safety briefing, especially important since the youngster had never hunted quail, and might be prone to getting over anxious. Quail hunting is more fast paced than many other hunts. Often, one will not go more than five or ten minutes between opportunities to shoot, and the birds often form coveys of up to a dozen birds. Once they break into flight, they take off in every direction at once, and once airborne give the hunter only a brief opportunity for a shot.

As we strolled through the field, the pointer would move back and forth across our direction of travel, moving left to right and back to cover all of the hunters, like a destroyer screen searching for submarines. Each time he would pick up a scent, his path would narrow until he was directly downwind of a target. He would creep forward and then point. We would move into position behind him, and the the retriever would be loosed to flush the birds. As they broke, each shooter would cover any birds flying in his zone, left, right, or center. We found single birds, doubles, and several large conveys.

After walking a total of eight and a half miles and leaving the dogs happy but exhausted, we ended up with 14 quail. After breasting them and putting them on ice, we headed home, where we grilled them with a rub, and wrapping them in bacon. Junior was pleased to have successfully put food on the table, and I was proud of him for being not only succesful, but a responsible hunter. He bagged nearly half of our haul.

Don't know the legality of it up in your neck of the woods, but I personally want to shoot a deer with an HP 22LR to observe the actual effects.

20 That CMP 45 acp looks a lot better than I expected. They must have put some good work into them. It sure shows on the last Garand I got from them. Essentially, it was all new except for the receiver and carefully assembled. Compared to new rifle prices it was a bargain.

21 Gotta love the CMP. Ordered an M1 from them years ago, ended up with a Danish lend-lease Garand. Miss-matched wood (beech wood stock), but had a new chrome-lined danish barrel, dated 1968. My favorite rifle, and a tack driver, too.

24 Ok, update on the rifle purchase. The FFL received the rifle on Tuesday and called to let me know he had it. (little did he know I was tracking that sucker all the way and knew exactly when he received it). :-DAs I had a full weeks work I was not able to go until yesterday to see the rifle and get my NICS check and fill out all the paperwork necessary for a NYC resident to own a rifle.I also brought the scope I had purchased for the gunsmith to mount on the rifle. I agonized what scope to put on this rifle as I made an impulse buy of a Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50 scope. I eventually decided to put the Nikon Prostaff P5 4-16x42 that I had purchased the previous week. I am saving the Vortex for another rifle I have my eye.I also purchased a hard case, a 5 round Mag (it is illegal to have a 10 round rifle mag in NYC) to replace the 10 round Mag that tragically was lost when my car went over one of the bridges heading to Jones Beach.
So after all is said I done I have left the rifle to have the scope mounted and I should be picking it up later this week. When I will be able to take it out to the range is anyone's guess. Not a fan of being at the range on cold, dreary days. I will keep you posted.

Bob, If it's an automatic, use whatever feeds the most reliably. If it's a revolver, preferably a 9 or 10 shot, you would have to test the ammo to see which produces the damage you want. Since I only use 22s for plinking and accuracy, I never gave thought to the damage the round does.

39 Gub thread gainz thread.

I had trouble finding a good concealed carry situation. Mainly worked with belly bands and elastic band shoulder holster. I had settled on the last but it was an "eh" sort of answer. It worked well enough.

But well enough wasn't quite good enough so I ended up not carrying more often than not.

So among the things I did at Christmas was go very low carb and I shed about 15 lbs which was good. And, I got a better belly band, neoprene rather than elastic.

With reduced Dunlop and the better belly band (not expensive, $20), I find that carry is a lot more comfortable.

60 Neon Madman delivered one hell of a cluster. Don't mess with him or he will definitely put a hole through you.

Range time! A fortnight ago I hit my beloved Top Gun Range in Houston and fired 549 rounds with my G26, Beretta 92 FS, and the beloved Sig P226 TacOps. (It was supposed to be 550 rounds but one round was a dud; I checked the back and the firing pin from the Beretta could not strike the casing any harder. Clearly there was an issue with the powder. Not enough perhaps to get the thing to go "boom"?)

As much as I love my Sig, I noticed two key problems with it: for some reason a screw came out of the handle on the left side, and the lime-green fiber optic piece that makes up the front sight was long gone. Fortunately, as I was staying in Galveston, I met Jim (he of the Sunk New Dawn) and his better half the night previous. (A gentleman and a scholar, he.) He recommended Collector's Firearms as a must-see place, and I tool his advice. I'm glad I did, because I asked if they could look at my Sig as they had gunsmiths on site. They did so, and revived the Sig to its original form. (I decided on a red fiber optic sight this time instead of the lime-green; I'll have to try this out on the range at some point. I figure that if I use a red dot in a M4 scope, I can use a red dot on the front sight of the Sig.)

And while at Collector's Firearms I looked through their selection of firearms, which is extensive, to say the least. While they were working on the Sig I was window shopping their selection, which again is extensive. So much so that I suspect this is why they will soon move to a new location in Houston that is not terribly far from their present location.

Eventually, I want to hit a range at minimum once a month. But my employment situation will need to be upgraded. Working on that.

(I'll bitch about TSA later - actually if I get a moment I will send a lengthy e-mail to Weasel about it for it could be good fodder for discussion.)

69 How many auto pistols have an operating rod running through the middle of the main slide spring?

I am working on a Chinese Mystery Pistol which is basically a handmade copy of an FN model 1900, as illustrated here:
https://preview.tinyurl.com/weua3e7

but chambered in .30 Mauser instead of .32 ACP. Loading an empty .30 cartridge with a live primer, it will not strike the primer hard enough to fire it, although it does leave a dimple. When the spring is installed, and the slide not present, the spring seems to bulge out sideways, and is slightly polished from where it has made contact with the bore in the slide. I am wondering if this friction is slowing the expansion of the spring, and making the striker hit too feeble?

Would a spring with smaller O.D. work better, maybe?

74 I don't know if it's just our local store but The nearby Cabelas doesn't have a brick of primers, any size or brand, on the shelves. I was planning to get a few without the cost of Hazmat. No dice. I'm not aware of any general shortages of components so maybe they just can't keep the primers on the shelves. They did have brass, powders and bullets.

Lesson: Plan ahead to get components when possible. I don't actually need primers right now so it isn't important. This time.

To this day whenever I report to the range in the AF to shoot the M9, I hear people bitching about the M9 and how we should have never dumped the 1911. (I like the M9; I don't see the reason for the fuss.)

I wonder what the timetable for the rollout of the M17 is? That way I can plan on getting one of them for practice. This is why the Beretta was my first gun purchase - for practice in between range sessions in the AF.

If you want to italicize something, perhaps like "Thanks, deplorable.", put an [ i ] (without the space before or after the i), in front, AND a [ /i ] (again, without the two spaces) after what you'd like italicized.

Failure to do the latter will result in a trip to The Barrel.

82 Got a question for y'all. If, for whatever reason, you could only have a .22LR as your home defense weapon, what ammo would you choose? A solid for penetration, a frangible for soft tissue damage, or a hollow point to split the difference?

Bob, look up some of the gel tests with hollow points. I have seen 22LR shot from a 2" barrel that did not expand at all due to the lower velocity. Penetration was up to 11".

Of course, "it depends" is usually the correct firearms answer. You should be able to find some tests by a gun geek that are a pretty close match to the weapon you would be using.

86 "People have a right to be safe on their own property, but people also
probably shouldn't locate near a shooting range if they don't like the
sound of gunfire."

We have a similar problem related air bases: people move in close to a military airbase (Air Force or Navy, usually) then complain about the constant noise over their houses. Didn't used to be a problem for a couple of reasons, but one was all the exclusion zones around the bases (and a LOT of airports) have been built into over the decades.
We had a spate of it about 10+ years ago in the Virginia Beach area. (Interestingly, about the same time the whole "poor Puerto Rican island is being bombed!" kerfuffle was ongoing.)

A LOT of it! I'd make sure the weapon had large mags (most older .22s do) and I had loads of spares to keep shooting.

Oh, and I might make sure I had two of them. I have 2 hands, after all.

(If you get, say, 10% with decent penetration and expansion, then throwing 50 rounds at the guy as fast as you can pull triggers is going to get you 5 good hits.)

100 Long time Lurker, very, very occasional commenter here. I wanted to weigh in on the CMP. Short version: support and interact with them whenever possible!
A good friend said to me over 20 years ago that one of the best days of his life was the day a FedEx guy showed up to deliver his Garand. It took me years, but I finally got organized with my son, got the paperwork together and we each ordered ours. Delivery was one of the best days of our lives!
Better, though, has been taking the long trip from Tejas to Alabama to go to the armory and store. On my 3rd trip, last December, I arrived at 8 am and with 13 people in front of me when the door was unlocked. They had probably 40 Garands (and several 1903 and 1917s that they don't advertise). There were 2 serviced but all original Garands on the rack. Fun morning. I hauled back 2. And match ammo was on sale with a gun purchase!

Another lottery thing: their Advanced Maintenance Class. Well worth doing. You get to assemble and fine-tune your own Garand. Another 3 great days in my life.

Working on restoring Lithgow wwII era no 1, mk 3 to firing status. Finally obtained a lebel forend for another restore, and picked up an Mas 36 adjustable rear sight used in frg Mas 36 French af rifle.

Natchez shooters supply has good prices on .223 and 5.56 ball ammo about 290 per 1000.

Should finally spend some quality revolver time at range this week.

124 @5 Scuba Dude- I am ordering a wolf spring kit and a Shok Buff (elastomeric buffer) that prevents the slide from hammering into the frame. Those WWII frames were spot heat treated and prone to cracking ergo the extra care since its a piece of history.

125 Since exciting new offerings from the CMP are so damn dramatic, we get a tendency to think of them as just a wonderful government gun store. That misses most of what they do over there.
In 1903, T.R. prevailed on the military authorities to set up the Board for the Promotion of Civilian Rifle Practice. If you hear old-timers talk about the good old days when rifles and ammo were provided more or less free of charge, you'll be hearing about them. The Director of Civilian Marksmanship was the heir to that, and the downside of all this government involvement was that the various state "Rifle and Pistol Associations" and the NRA lulled themselves into thinking that their main function was to keep records.

Slowly, slowly after WWII, NRA put together a structure for running regional and national championship matches in smallbore and high-power, but they absolutely hated it, since it cost a lot to do and the fees and dues did not cover it. The Olympic movement made things worse, since there were two sets of qualifying procedures, two sets of rules and targets, and Olmpians are a royal pain in the ass (I have a couple in the family).

NRA has never done anything in national competition but try to get out of the responsibility for putting them on. This has caused a very great deal of ill feeling about the NRA, because when you first join, or first start shooting, it just seems like the most natural thing in the world that they should be the national sanctioning body, and just naturally be in charge of fostering enthusiasm, paying for training and athletic developmet, and hanging targets. NRA would like to know how they make money on this.

So, along came the Clinton admin and the "end of history." Billy Jeff actually sent an Asst. SecDef up The Hill to testify to Congress that personal marksmanship skill was no longer required for the defense of the nation. Army was ordered to spin off all the offices and support procedures that had partially set up and supplied national matches. The DCM was to be shut down.

But those matches at Camp Perry (and by extension, the military and Olympic matches at Benning) were producing quite a lot of revenue, for shooting supply vendors, a few hotels and restaurants, and the post office at Lacarne. Enter the least likely gun advocate in the US, Dem Rep Marcy Kaptur, a one-time nunnery pledge and city planner. Unwilling to see several million in tourism revenue (and several thousand votes) just vanish, she campaigned stoutly to set up the CMP as it now stands, in charge of putting on training and matches, funded by surplus sales. She votes for every damn gun ban the Party demands, and yet you would not be getting those sweet-sweet carbines without her.
NRA is almost, not-quite out of the smallbore match business. The new ASSA and CMP have taken up all the slack, and the scene is a mess. CMP is trying hard, and doing pretty well, in establishing high-school and collegiate air rifle to take over the space that, 50 years ago, smallbore rifle clubs filled. The "World Series of Shooting" scene that used to be Camp Perry is shot for good. There are still some nice CMP matches there. The NRA show is at Atterbury -- and I count this as the 4th time the various nattering NRA out-groups have tried to find the "perfect" place to move the National Matches.

131 RI Red,

Have fun with your Predator!

However, I thought the barrel was already floated on that one.

I do think you need to invent a "smart target" that tells you what went wrong on your ammo/rifle when you do get a flyer.

BTW, what happened to the old big game hunters in Africa when they only had time for one shot and it was a flyer? (I think I know the answer.)

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at February 16, 2020 08:30 PM (tkyK5)

132 @8 CBD- yep definitely reparked. The barrel is a govt contract post 1949 barrel and the magazine is a government contract replacement so I'm sure it was rebuilt at some point prior to storing in the arsenal. There are no rebuild stamps though. They didn't always stamp them when rebuilt.

137 Eromero, 9mikemike is great, for many reasons.

Incredibly, I own only one so far (XD "Tactical" = 5-inch barrel) - love it. CZ-75 will be next, for sure. After that, not sure.

But at the range on duty day I've been seeing some very shweet 9mm AR platforms. Thinking of building one, as light as possible. Might even be something The Boss will feel she can handle easily (she's very good with the M1 carbine).

And - going to do a new 9mm load today. 700-X. Bought it during the last "panic" as a general purpose powder because it was available, want to use it up. Always use 124g round-nose now, usually plated, but got a great deal on some FMJ, so those will be "standard" for a while.

Purpose - cordon sanitaire - a buffer against idiots who might want to interfere. This in a rural area, not heavily developed. BLM land on a few sides, then scattered ranches with homes on another side.

Haven't seen the latest, but last time I saw a map, the cordon was almost complete.

160 jayhawkone,

Since you are interested in targets and maybe HD, not concealed carry, I think the CZ 75 is the best 9mm out there. Like any semi-auto, it does have to be cleaned and lubed to maintain reliability.

If it could be a revolver (my preference) a Ruger GP100 357 or K-frame Smith, both using 38 specials, would be an excellent alternative. Either is capable of great accuracy. And I believe a double action revolver is the best home defense handgun.

But as others suggested, handle as many as possible to get a real feel for the weight and balance.

Have since found a nice M1 carbine from a private seller - but the 1903s seemed to zoom in price after CMP sold out (well, duh). Some day. The synergies of reloading 30-06 and the quality of those rifles are compelling to me.

As long as I keep my core values and competencies aligned with the synergies, and leverage the mindspace and reach out to all stakeholders, I should be fine.

If you can find/handle a S&W Model 66 or 19, do so. 4-inch barrel. Balance is perfect. S&W has resumed making the 66 (stainless version) as part of their Classic line - and they're not giving them away, ahemm. However, good used 66s and 19s are still out there, I think. -------------

My plan is to come up with match that is USPSA combined with Steel Challenge with a bit of IDPA tossed in for good measure.

I've got two stages designed, in my head, already.

I want to do one where one exits a car, pistol, retreat, open trunk, get rifle, finish stage. (we have a vehicle we use for such things)

Then another will be plate racks and poppers, move around the corner, rifle in hand, CQB on IDPA targets, last shot is a popper plate, which would be the stop plate for that stage.

I want a maximum of two stages that are combo pistol rifle and the rest all pistol or all rifle. Mainly due to time constraints because the transition from pistol to rifle and vice versa is time consuming.

I'm hoping for lots of lead in a short amount of time.

182 Pug, sounds fantastic. Would love to see one of the NHL outdoor games. And at that venue, wow.

Once saw a football game there. Flyover was, well, as you'd expect, impressive (*Air Force* Academy) - and it was late 80s, height of the Cold War, we had lots of s**t to fly.

B-1 finished off the fly-over. He effed up, came in way too low - was exciting and noisy in the upper deck where we were, the pilot got in trouble, but helped make the day.

Due to my hand size, pretty picky about what I buy to shoot. Best feeling semi automatic pistols for me are the hi power and the Smith and Wesson mp polymer series. Close third is a Smith 3rd gen pistol in Dao.

But then again the std at grip works for me which is not true for some. Ironically, I recently got a colt new service which is huge but it has good trigger reach for me with splinter grips. .

190 Dang, blake, you're far away - I'd love to do a match like that. I'm not much for static (bullseye) matches, to put it mildly. Love action/movement matches with lots of steel.

A great steel match no longer in existence a bit north of me once had a night/Halloween shoot. Amazing. Even had an Anaheim PD cruiser - "borrowed" - from which we started one stage.

That steel match used to typically have a round count around 200-220. That's what I'm talking about. My long-time stand-by matches here locally have become pretty boring, and with round counts well under 100. For half a Saturday? Don't think so. Also far less interesting that it used to be, no moving or popper-actuated targets, lots of paper that needs to be scored (and I don't care about precision in a practical, action- oriented shoot).

191 Hello Horde!

I've got a question about people's Loctite habits. I'm indecisive, and I frequently move scopes and accessories around between firearms. For this reason I usually avoid putting Loctite on anything until I'm really sure I've found the right place for something.

That worked well enough until last weekend at the range when I offered a gun for Mark and Nurse to shoot, and the gun fell apart in Mark's hands. It was quite an embarrassment!

So, here's what I'm wondering:
1) How often do y'all apply Loctite when you attach an accessory to a gun?
2) Have you ever had problems with loose screws?
3) Have you ever wanted to remove an accessory, but decided against it because of the hassle of removing Loctite?

Liked the surplus one I got from AIM so much I bought one of the last new ones when I stumbled across it in a local fun store. Pretty lucky. It was part of a final, small run done for an American distributor, after regular production had ceased (2013?).

However, as my recent semi autos buys are for sd purposes, I carry Dao or da/sa only without safeties and recently been using a beretta compact px4 in trad da or a single stack springfield xds.

Love the Browning hi power but best way to carry is cocked and locked. I can't guarantee swiping the safety without a lot of practice so it is a range gun only.

Heh, I'm overstating a bit for effect. It was an AR pistol in 300BLK. It has a KAK Blade "arm brace" which is held in place by set screw, which walked loose and let the "arm brace" slide around loosely and drop off the end of the buffer tube. It also has a reflex sight with a quick-detach mount; that mount is tensioned by a set screw which also walked loose, so the quick-detach lever fell open and the sight toppled off the rail.

But it really comes down to personal preference. I got the CZ when what I really wanted was a BHP. Some of that is style over substance, no doubt there. Both are good guns. OF course the BHP has a small cult following and not much else. they don't make it any more. If you do look for a vintage BHP, the T and C series guns are considered the best.

Yep, that is the point for sure. Everyone has different needs and interests. Just like I would never recommend any new shooter going for a BHP unless they have shot one and like the looks and characteristics. Some guy getting a BHP site unseen and then finding out about trigger bite would be a bad scene.

For sure get to a good range, meet with some friends, do whatever to try various hand guns out is my advice to anyone really. There is a reason people get rid of a lot of previously sought after weapons.

I hear ya, B-DD...I'm just already committed to the weekend before.

It would be super-awesome to meet you and your bride, though.

Philately, is there anything it can't do?

It gets my stamp of approval. After all, it *is* the original Cancelled Culture.

253 To me, the selling point of the CZ is this: if you run out of ammo, you can still kill the bad guy by just one sharp blow. You wouldn't need to pistol-whip much in a defensive situation with one. Why?

Those things are SOLID blocks of metal.

The nice thing about that is that I have found that the CZ attenuates recoil because of their size. I don't know if I'd get one or not.

254 For sure get to a good range, meet with some friends, do whatever to try various hand guns out is my advice to anyone really. There is a reason people get rid of a lot of previously sought after weapons.
Posted by: Quint at February 16, 2020 09:45 PM (n13/j)

This is why I love Top Gun Range in Houston. TONS of guns to try out. You can rent one with fifty rounds and find out if it's up to your liking or not.

In a very real sense, guns are like shoes. It makes sense to try one out before settling on one. One may look cool but be terrible for handling for whatever reason (and may yet work extremely well for someone else).

We're thinking about doing the texas thing when it happens. We were talking about doing some smaller trips instead of one big trip every year. What part of texas is it?

257 I love the CZ-75. My only experience with them is the original version. It was impressive.

Corsicana, about an hour south of Dallas on I45.

259 I talked myself into buying a another PSA lower while on this thread.

So cheap. Ships to a place close by that charges $20 transfer for veterans.

I am thinking of maybe stocking up on lowers as the uppers are not firearms for later.

261 244 Cicero, I thought I had retired. Didn't work out. Sumbiches in a certain northern state said, you need to take the bar. Already done it for three states and waived into a fourth.
My brain hurts.

263 Good news range report. As usual, wall o' text warning.
TL;DR - Glock 44 is shaping up, was a mag spring issue.

So, spent all of yesterday's range visit trying to iron out what was going wrong with the G44. My gut told me it was the magazine design, Moron Lazy Messenger said it was probably the mag springs. He was right.

Loading 9 rounds, I had zero malfunctions. So I spent most of the session loading 6 rounds for some drills with Nurse Ratchet (5 yards and 7 yards: strong hand only 6 rounds, reload and then weak hand only 6 rounds).

Doing this for about 300 rounds, I decided to try loading the magazines to full 10 round capacity. I did and it worked! No malfunctions at all for the next 100 rounds.

I'll do a full inspection and cleaning later this week, but the main quirks seem to have worked themselves out! So I will have a functional Glock 19 stand in for training. The accuracy has been very fine, by the way.

I also got to spend some quality time with my CZ P-07 Kadet adapter, which is very very nice. I shot better with it, because DA/SA and the SA trigger is Quality.

I do suck at weak hand shooting. Very much sucking. So more training on that next week.

The Nurse, by the way, is very good even one handed and even weak hand only. So...watchit.

It was a very good day at the range.

Because Virginia

Posted by: attila the thrilla at February 16, 2020 10:26 PM (w7KSn)

what
the hell has happened to this world where Virginia is a cautionary
tale? A year ago Virginia was at the cutting edge of 2a rights and
their state organizations were models for others. That is a warning for
everyone really, don't get complacent.

And
one final point. I love the looks, style, history, and shootability of
the BHP. It is a still the quintessential 9mm wondergun to many. But
"In no way do I recommend it to a newbie or anyone who just owns one
gun. Sure you can learn to use it and it should work well. It will also
be a thing of beauty and only go up in value. There are no major design
flaw unless you are shooting IDPA or something.

But
I would not pick it as a first gun. Hell, there is nothing wrong with
the G19 really as long as you get good instruction. The BHP is a thing
of beauty to many and no other gun points as well. The Glock in
particular points weird for those used to 1911s and more classic
firearms. But you can get used to anything.

I
am not referring to the OP as I don't know his situation. But If I
were to recommend a first firearm to someone, it would likely be a wheel
gun or Glock. They key is don't pull that trigger full stop. And get
good training.

I'd be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit
more. Thanks!
