Inspired by the success of Tesla’s performance brand, an army of American startups — and one very large legacy automaker — will roll out five battery-powered trucks over the next two years. Although we’ve seen only prototypes, sketches and teaser photos of the five electric titans — the GMC Hummer EV, Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, Lordstown Endurance and Bollinger Motors B2 — they look to be big, powerful and defiantly different. And more truck makers may join the battery-power revolution, including an electric F-150 from Ford. Recently Tesla introduced a pickup truck. My humble opinion? It looked like a piece of crap and not practical. Now a new EV truck will be hitting the showroom floors in the near future. Nikola Corporation has unveiled the Badger, the automaker's first electric pickup truck. It has a maximum range of 600 miles by using its fuel cell — hydrogen — and battery power sources. Nikola traditionally manufactures electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles for "heavy-duty" use, including semi-trucks, off-roading power sport vehicles, and jet ski-esque watercraft. This is the company's first time entering the soon-to-be crowded electric pickup truck market. "I have been working on this pickup program for years and believe the market is now ready for something that can handle a full day's worth of work without running out of energy," CEO of Nikola, Trevor Milton, said in a statement. They are a nice looking vehicle. Well that certainly is a big boast. I can see the Badger working for an urban weekend warrior who lives in warmer climates. But what about the Wyoming rancher, Minnesota logger and the other hard working and playing truck owners? What about charging stations? What about the grid improvements that are needed to provide all the juice for these Evs? I'll be looking for a "new" truck this summer. My 1998 Chevrolet with 200,000 miles needs to be put to snow plow pasture only. The EV prices aren't frightening. Look at a fully loaded pickup with a motor. But for me, I'll stick with the internal combustion engine. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The Army has looked into this, especially during the Obama era. A pure electric pickup will never be anything more than a novelty for local use utility only. The driving engineering trade off is, and always will be, between payload capacity and power storage. It's a no-win trade off.
It might, however, make sense to look at a diesel-electric solution, especially with motor-in-hub electric drive. Posted by: EndOfPatience at February 16, 2020 12:27 PM (ttfl2) 16

3.5 liter V6 Engine and six speed tranny. Some old Boomer had it and didn't drive it much, only had 8,000 miles on it. When I went to get it, I lifted the hood and the amount of leaves in there was proof the old bastard never even lifted the hood. Otherwise it was clean as a whistle except for the cab. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh The sole reason SUVs and pickups outsell other models is the CAFE regulations. People want the biggest car they can afford. That's SUV/pickups now. Automakers can't make big sedans anymore and still hit the evermore-stringent MPG regs. The SUV/pickup lines have lower CAFE mileage standards. So we're driving bigger vehicles than we need/want, because regs keep automakers from selling us what we want. Posted by: Michael Rittenhouse at February 16, 2020 12:32 PM (Ph5jo) 34
Oh, c'mon. Electric trucks are fashion accessories for urbanites with necrotic soydick and will never be feasible as anything more than a short-haul station wagon that's missing its roof from the B-pillar back.
Unless you incorporate hydrogen fuel cells or some dramatically new power source, the math makes zero sense. But if ALL you ever have to do is haul a few bundles of 2x4s for a few miles so the Paolo can construct the gazebo your lonely and frustrated wife wants (directly before he meets her other womanly demands) it'll be just fine. I had a prius and it was a good commuter car, so good my folks bought one. Colorado Front range, we do not get a whole lot of winter temps, and I'd never recommend for areas that get more months of winter cuz the mpg boost suffered quite a bit on cold days.
And for a pickup? Give me the portable energy storage of diesel or gasoline. I tow a heavy trailer so I think the extra costs of buying and maintaining a diesel were an OK tradeoff. My veterinarian was telling me once most of his clients tell him he should have a diesel. I just looked at him and said "but you hardly ever tow, and you don't have a huge trailer when you do" Posted by: PaleRider is simply irredeemable at February 16, 2020 12:39 PM (n4y+3) 50

Not to mention, what about truck owners who want to work on their own trucks (i.e. maintenance, oil changes, etc.), not take them into the dealer. The electric vehicle underhood setup is nothing like an internal combustion engine underhood. Unless new owners educate themselves on how an electric vehicle works, they are forced to take their vehicle in to the dealer for maintenance they previously did themselves. The only reason there is even a push by all the vehicle manufacturers to go electric is because of the government regulations and penalties for MPG and GGE (Greenhouse Gas Emissions). I have a Prius and I love it. Don't care (or evangelize) about protecting the environment or anything....I just drive in the city a lot, between work and taking kids to and from activities, and the mileage is great. Plus, it's small and has a great turn radius, which helps.
If you fold the rear seats down, the storage capacity is also pretty handy. I've hauled several deer from the field in my Prius (wrapped in a tarp to keep blood off the upholstery). Posted by: Grimaldi at February 16, 2020 12:51 PM (r6oYH) 84

it surprised me to see the battery pack was only 10% degraded after 300,000 miles. (in certain cases, other cases had other problems, more degradation). Still seems pricey, but supposedly maintenance is also much cheaper than exploding fuel in an engine.

Volkswagen just announced that there will be no pickup in its future, but it has already broken ground on an all-new plant at its Tennessee manufacturing operation. The new plant will be exclusively dedicated to assembling electric vehicles, which VW has determined will be a high-volume product in the USA within a few years. VW has also announced that the current internal combustion engine on the Passat will be the last internal combustion engine it develops. Meanwhile, Volvo has also announced that it will not develop any further internal combustion engines, as it is going all-electric. The European auto companies are either going to be involuntarily exiting the American market if they remain committed to this all-electric nonsense, or they'll need to betray the clerics of The Sustainable Organic Church Of The Carbon Apocalypse - the state religion of Europe.

When AOC was vomiting up the Green New Deal, she said something about getting rid of 99% of the Internal Combustion vehicles. The moment I heard that, I wished there was a real journalist present who would have asked.
"How do I qualify to be in the 1% who gets to keep their IC engine vehicles? I mean, is it a political decision? Money? Will there be a special government department that gets to make the call? One of the things I would love to see a real journalist do is insist the left defines their terms. Obama said "Hope and Change" but never defined what he meant. Bloomberg is claiming he will get "It" done without defining what "It" really is. AOC said 1% got to keep their IC engines, make her define who the 1% is. The left says the immigration system is 'broken' but never really gives details, only that the solution is open borders. Posted by: JB1000 at February 16, 2020 01:06 PM (1nz3P) 120

Electric trucks could be the EVs Waterloo. Most people who own and use trucks seem to put up over 100k before they shop for something new. I think the average car buyer puts 5 years on a car and then goes shopping. Certainly someone who shops EVs wants the latest and greatest. Now, how many charge cycles can an EV battery take in 2020 before it starts it show wear? In a Tesla, the cost of replacement for a battery pack is 10-20 percent of the cost of the vehicle.
Also for Tesla, their hand-finished body work is a bitch to repair. Can you imagine the cost if the repair is being done on an exoskeleton on the Tesla truck instead of just a side or quarter panel? Now that the Model 3 is attracting a lot of new customers we're going to start to see how much body work Tesla shops can really handle. 131 An electric vehicle in a MN winter? Sure.
Posted by: Mr. Peebles at February 16, 2020 01:11 PM (wc1vX) I really don't get it. Battery life depends on the loads applied. Turning on the heater will drain the bejesus out of a battery, which of course supplies less power at low temperatures. So how far can you get on a battery charge depends critically on the temperature. But no problem in a balmy MN winter, right? You miscalculate, you can just sit by the side of the road and catch up on your reading, right? Another factor: battery performance inevitably degrades over time. Maybe you could've gotten, say, 250 miles out of a charge when the battery was brand new, but now - unbeknownst to you - you can only get 200 miles on a charge, and it's really cold, so maybe you can only get 170 miles, what with the heater and lights on, the low temperature, and degradation of the battery's performance. But that's not a problem in a MN winter, right? Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at February 16, 2020 01:17 PM (7p0Hn) Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at February 16, 2020 01:17 PM (aA3+G) 149

I sold my 2014 Nissan Frontier (miss it - trouble free very underrated truck) and bought a 2014 Dodge Ecodiesel. Great mileage, but I hate going from a Nissan piece of perfect Engineering to an American made POS that I have to slap parts on every 4 to 6 months. Finally bought a high end OBD scanner. Ford has partnered with another all-electric pickup-truck manufacturer. Your concerns about the paucity of charging stations, cold-weather battery life, RANGE on ONE charge (particularly if plowing snow or towing more than 1K lbs.) are well-placed.
But the single most significant question is that of the charging-station infrastructure. Until that's resolved, the only use for EV's will be for "in-town" shopping, theater, grand-kids, etc. IOW, they will be very nice golf-carts......although the Chevy Bolt sedan looks awful and has all the comfort of a Willys GP. If I had DJT money, I'd secretly have a replica built with a fiberglass body, a 700 HP engine, and race tires tucked into the wheel wells and hidden with fake wheel covers. Then have a real driver bring it out on the track doing 60 MPH for a lap and then suddenly wick it up to 160 for four or five laps. It'd probably cost a $1M for a ten minute prank but you know the car would go directly to the NASCAR HoF with Trump's name and picture. Would be worth every cent for the PR. I think a recharging drone would probably run into the same issues that make battery powered aircraft super difficult. Energy density being the main issue. Can never get enough power for weight to achieve lift for a sustained period. And, as a charging platform, none of that stored energy would be available for flight.

Could drones potentially be the answer? Sending a drone with enough electrical juice to charge a stranded vehicle?
Have to be a pretty hefty drone to carry that much extra electricity. But it could work (would also work for gasoline) Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 16, 2020 01:37 PM (KZzsI) === Work much better and have an extended range for gasoline as the return trip you would have a much lighter load. motor-in-hub electric drive.
Why increase the un-sprung weight and expose the motor/s to more shock and road salt? Diesel-electric They're making 9 and 10 speed transmissions nowadays. Generator/motor transmission e.g. locomotives make sense for trains where your pulling thru long stretches of time that might not be at ideal rev's for your prime mover. Here's another thing about electric vehicles: wouldn't they kind of dangerous to work on?
I mean, if you a short in the electrical system of a gas-powered car, no problem, you can just track it down. But if you a short in an EV, you could get fried if the short makes the chassis hot. I don't know the voltage and current of an EV battery, but it HAS to be substantial to power the motor moving the vehicle. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at February 16, 2020 01:50 PM (7p0Hn) 274

That's my thing though, I think it's perfectly fine if someone doesn't understand something, and says so, but then if you go to the trouble to explain it (presuming you aren't using overly technical language), then at least have the courtesy to sit through a short educational description. If you can't be bothered to at least feign interest (and demonstrate some grasp of what is being explained), then yeah, you might not be good for much. At least not for the long haul. 261- wasn't dumb, who knows what the future holds? We aren't tapping nearly the energy available. I think there are incredible efficiency gains still available. Mazda is supposed to have developed a new skyactiv motor (whatever that is) that makes good ol gas much more efficient as a fuel (something like 70% for motive force- I think the best today are under 50. That makes energy dense compounds like hydrocarbons (gas) much more efficient power/weight than any extant batteries.

My comment on EVs: in season 2 of Grand Tour, Richard Hammonds drives all over Switzerland in a Croatian "hyper car." It looks super cool, it's wicked fast, even compared to the Lambo that Clarkson is driving. then Hammonds takes it to a hill climb time trial. Just across the finish line, the "throttle" sticks open or faults. He ends up roof side down in a wreck that should have killed him. He was fine. But get this: the car burned for 5(!?) days, as the battery cells continued to cook off. Electric isn't green, OR safe.

On some, it includes regenerative braking that charges a capacitor (instead of a battery) for the hotel load at stoplights so it can disengage the alternator from the A/C, lights, stuff like that, and it doesn't shut off the engine at stops. Posted by: Farmer Bob at February 16, 2020 01:59 PM (87EdW) Yes, we have a future that none of us can properly conceive... if we don't kill ourselves first. My assumption has been, someday vehicles will all be, not propelled by fuel, but pulled by a magnetic field, in such a way where no fuel will be present inside the vehicle itself. And self-driving appears to be inevitable, so you program your destination, then sit back and let the vehicle take you. All part of a grid, so that every possible intersection with every other possible vehicle is "known" in a way that accidents are all but entirely eliminated. I won't live to see it, but I think it only makes sense to go that way. Posted by: BurtTC at February 16, 2020 02:06 PM (hku12) 340

As someone who actually uses a pickup truck in daily work, hauling lumber, trash, dirt, building materials of all sorts, furniture, etc, etc, I'd be happy if the manufacturers would start making trucks with a real honest-to-goodness 8-foot box again. We are looking at Trucks because we want to tow a camper and we are looking at getting a some type of Diesel Truck and we were impressed that they get good mileage along with better towing depending on what we buy.
Posted by: Patrick from Ohio at February 16, 2020 12:21 PM (dKiJG) I have owned three Diesel Suburbans, so I am definitely not anti-Diesel. But I would not buy a current-model Diesel truck. 1. They cost a lot more to buy, and more to service. 2. You have to put monkey piss in a tank to "clean up" their exhaust. This basically amounts to an additional tax on fuel, that provides exactly zero perceived benefit to the user. 3. The increase in fuel mileage is offset by the fact that Diesel now sells for a lot more than gasoline. If you routinely tow heavy loads, the better towing qualities of the Diesel engine might offset these negatives. That's for you to decide. I cannot ever believe that an Electric vehicle will ever be "Better" for the environment.
First. 1st law of Thermodynamics "Energy can neither be created or destroyed, it only changes state." (So chemical to mechanical). 2. No perfect transfer of energy exist. You will never get 100% of your original energy back. Now knowing these things lets start at fossil fuels. You burn the fuels (Gas)to power the car (Chemical to Mechanical.) New model. Burn fuel (Coal) make electricity, run through wires (Line Loss electricity). Charge battery (Electricity to Chemical). Use battery to run car (Chemical to Electricity to Mechanical) Sounds like a great plan. Count me out. Posted by: Picric at February 16, 2020 02:18 PM (nonGu) 390

New truck gas engines are so strong and maintenance free one must really work a truck in order to justify a diesel.
That they are dropping big V8s from the menu is the problem. Posted by: Braenyard at February 16, 2020 02:18 PM (Hg4NE) 393
My brother thinks its a scam to raise revenue. All those pre-orders are cash on the barrel for him to work with, but the truck is just to get the pre-orders. Meh, I am not a tesla fanboi but they do seem to have achieved some things that the other big manuffactuers have not.
I am something of a fanboi of Porsche and their new Taycan underperforms Tesla bigly. A lot of guys have wasted a lot of money betting against them. Posted by: not so at February 16, 2020 02:14 PM (HALdu) Of course, there is something to be said for fierce competition, as a driver of innovation. I don't know if Musk is a charlatan or not. Maybe more accurately, the question is how MUCH of a charlatan he is, because all great innovators in history have had at least a bit of carnival barker in their DNA. Shame about the infrastructure. Someone else get on that. I'm just the ideas guy.
Posted by: hogmartin at February 16, 2020 12:40 PM (t+qrx) We already have the infrastructure, in place, and operating, to transport and market hydrogen. We just coordinate hydrogen atoms around a lesser number of carbon atoms, creating a range of liquid and gaseous fuels which are easy transport and burn. There is more hydrogen in a gallon of gasoline, than there is in a gallon of liquid hydrogen. True fact. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 16, 2020 02:28 PM (LxWV7) 406

LinDuh, talk DH into the straight F350. Or not, you don't have much ice worries in Texas, Dually is not so good on slick roads. They make them for folks with super heavy LQ horse trailers that need dually to handle the bed weight, and the 'cool' factor but like diesel itself you pay extra for routine maintenance for dually.

I have a 10-year-old Duramax Allison crew-cab dually - 4x4, so winter not a problem. Tow 11k fifth wheel up and down the big dune between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, done masonry and deck building that beat the crap out of the bed - 4k pallet of bricks no issue. Gets 19mpg empty at 60mph, but I wish the Allison had another gear for higher speed travel. 12mpg towing that trailer, but drops to 10.5 at 80 mph.

Looking at the current offerings reminds me:
First truck of my own: '86 Toy HiLux 4x4. Absolutely indestructible. I loved it to death, but 10 years later life changed and I had to do a lot of interstate driving and wanted ABS/airbags. Sold it and got a Ram. What a complete piece of shit. Why is there nobody selling a cheap, standard cab 4x4 any more? I don't want a fashion statement, I just want to haul crap around. "Crew" and "extended" cabs do nothing but detract from bed space, the raison d'etre of a pickup. Idiot manufacturers. Posted by: Jim at February 16, 2020 07:30 PM (RnWbG) 420

He would be doing 3 shot groupings on the vile Socialist/Marxists Hyenas feeding off the carcass of his once beloved city... Just saying... Posted by: Nightwatch stone axe smith at February 17, 2020 01:29 AM (kFkpX) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0609 seconds. |
