While I understand the averages tend to favor those who get educated, those averages take into account the absolute down and out, drug addict types who also don't go to college.

I grew up in Michigan when the auto industry ruled the state, and not in an economically segregated suburb, but a smaller city where the kids of lawyers, factory owners, and doctors went to school with the ids of the people they employed. We didn't grow up with Rubin's assholean 'tude.

Was gonna say that they usually give auction estimates that are a bit high - they valued a collection of Chinese Chienlung jade at like $1.5M that went for closer to $650K, but that was also due to the market for Chinese stuff getting a bit weaker after it peaked in the late 00's.
There was a collection of stuff about the original 1871 Boston Red Stockings that got valued at close to $1.7M - I don't know if it ever went to auction.

The good: I've made high five/low six figures some years.
The bad: I'm away from home for weeks and occasionally months at a time. I don't know anyone. I see family once, maybe twice a year. I work with ex-cons and druggies. The barrier to entry to most of these jobs is very low, which means you get a lot of people who can only clear very low entry bars.
My job has been dirty and dangerous. I was once trying to set a hydraulic cutter on a pipeline 240 under water with 1' of visibility. Cutter weighs 6000 pounds and is hanging on a boat crane and is surging up and down 6-8 feet every 15-20 seconds. There were times when that thing got ripped up over my head by a surge and I'm backpedaling and thinking 'please don't kill me please don't kill me'.

I'm not claiming college is useless. I am a college-educated professional and I don't think I'm useless because of it.
But I do think it is distressing that so many of our "elites" do seem to believe that everything but "college-educated" is sub-par and scary and bad. That isn't true any more than the reverse is.
It may be getting to the point that any humanities degree from an American institution is actually a red flag. That is *bad.* Education is important and education and job training are not the same thing (though we tend to conflate them in this country). That the colleges - at least the liberal arts - are becoming or have become a brainwashing exercise that destroys the mind and works manfully to put out neurotic communists with the hope that they destroy all that they touch is a cultural disaster.
And that's what these people mean when they say "college-educated." They use it as code for "right-thinking" and I am tired of it.

My brother just got sent off his last child this year. He remarked the cost was almost entirely based on income - at his income every school costs about $35k. No matter the list price, there are discounts or grants or whatever to bring it down to that figure. Harvard, the local state school... same thing.
The entire industry, and it is and industry, seems geared toward extracting the most money possible out of anxious parents.

Friend hated our English teacher. She was giving us spelling tests of obscure words every Monday. He go so tired of taking them that instead of writing down the words that she read off he deliberately mispelled everything she read as the most vulgar words he could think of and, this is important, deliberately mispelled those words so no one could prove he was writing swear words.

I enjoyed my time at college and learned a great deal. But I got a liberal arts degree before the liberal arts became poisoned by PC.

Same here. All I had to do was figure out how to learn, which took a while. Really all you need to do is read, IMO. It's kinda fun to do more in a classroom or lab setting with a bunch of other students, but even to do that you gotta read first.

Dersh did an extremely good job. This entire farce has been a waste a time from the moment that the House started it. The defense had to be made, though, and I am glad they did well (yes, especially Dersh). That the GOP senate is worthless and will drag this stupid thing out is on them. It sucks and I lament it and yes this entire fiasco has been an egregious waste of time and political capital. That was its point. It was up to the senate GOP to end it and they refuse because they suck.

Each senator in there is playing their own game with their own alliances and for their own objectives.
