The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

leaving the reservation is the worst thing a pet minority can do. A current example is Alan Dershowitz, who stubbornly interprets the Deep State attempts to destroy President Trump as politically motivated, and for that he is criticized as a traitor. He is used to the vitriol, because as a leftist academic he supported Israel's right to exist (what a weird construction that is!), and that is anathema to the conventional wisdom of the academy.

But I think the most important example is Clarence Thomas. A principled originalist, an independent thinker, a fine jurist and a Black man. One of these things is beyond the pale. That he dares to be his own man and refuses to define himself according to the playbook of the identity-politics obsessed progressive movement in America made him the biggest target of his generation.

J.J. Sefton recently reviewed the upcoming documentary called Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words, which premiers in a few days. The left and Hollywood revels in hagiographic portrayals of their heroes...abortionists, mass murderers, communists, etc. But a sensitive portrayal of a staunch defender of our Constitution and our country is a rare bird indeed.

ThomasAd.jpg

It's a limited release, but if at all possible, watch this documentary in a theater, and show the liberal elites that Justice Thomas has the support of the American people.

And...does anyone else get the sense that he is a nice guy? Serious without a doubt, but well grounded and content. Who would you rather have a beer with...Clarence Thomas or RBG or Kagen or Breyer?

Hey, not sure if this was mentioned, but despite the happy-talk about the GOPe fundraising "prowess" under the new GOPe House leader, it seems he was sounding the alarm bells privately...

"They (the DNCC) are kicking our ass," warned Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

"HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP used a closed party meeting this morning to concede they are in the midst of a full-blown fundraising crisis, after the @DCCC outraised the @NRCC by $40 million in 2019. Individual Dem candidates are also smoking their Republican opponents."

10 Hello Horde. I'm in a bit of a conundrum and I'd like some advice.

My brother was WIA in Vietnam in 1968. This past weekend he came by for a rare visit and in a night of drink he did something he had never, ever done before: talked about how he was wounded. He was hit 3 times by a machine gun and another Marine grabbed him and drug him to cover. That act cost cost the Marine his life.

I now know the name of this hero. A quick bit of googling leads me to believe that his sister is still alive. I'm very tempted to try to reach out to her or her family to pass on that her brother died a hero and my brother is alive today because of him. Or, should I just leave this alone?

Trump understands the value of talking to real people, not schmoozing with politicians, lobbyists, and their support industry (media, pollsters, etc.)

Social media lets him do just that, and because he's able to reach the public directly, the traditional gatekeepers and their spin doctors can't control the flow of information like they have in the past.

Here's something else to consider.

The individual Republican doesn't matter too much in the House. The point is to get a majority so that Democrats can't dictate the business of the House, like this Congress.

So, yeah, that Republican may be a RINO squish, but he's still going to vote for leadership and get a Republican speaker in place instead of Nancy or Nancy's successor.

Sure, that Democrat says he won't vote for Nancy, but 1) he will, and 2) it doesn't matter if he does or doesn't because if the Democrats have the majority at all, Nancy's gonna be speaker.

They should be very *very* careful. Dragging Flynn's kids into it got Flynn to capitulate. I don't think that will work on Trump. If nothing else (and I suspect there is plenty "else," for what that's worth), Melania won't put up with it. She is pissed over the treatment of her family. If they decide to go after Trump's family with the power of the state, I suspect that Trump might just do what they all fear.

If you search for it on AMC's page, you can eventually find it on their site; for unknown reasons, their page title has some ID # at the end, and the new number with the actual page for the movie is a bit higher than the one the search engine links to.

You clearly belong to the "you haven't suffered enough" school of medical advice.
Straight whiskey, with water only, is not bad for a diabetic at all. There's new "research" (term used advisedly; this is the internet) showing that straight whiskey may be good for both insulin production and blood sugar.

I get all kinds of smart-assed commentary on this from people who have one lite beer and really think they're whooopin' in up, but, I have the charts to prove it. Of course the ironic weird One Simple Fact is that many beverages of moderation are chock-full of carbohydrates, and lighter presumably healthy stomachics and cordials are really sugar syrup.

I hope he has a succession plan because I cannot see voting for

The only people I considered in 2016 were Trump and Carson, since the GOP effed me so, so hard on Obamacare after promising over and over again to do something about it.

Now, I'm all about the eff you GOP, Trump style candidates. Screw the establishment/Deep State people.

I've had beers with Justice Thomas. On a couple of occasions. He's a gregarious, funny, self-effacing but powerful and confident man. He knows that even though he's black and came from literally nothing, all these white chillins (law students) love him as the second coming, and knows that he is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the most powerful nation the word has ever known. At the same time, he is friendly and open, and dead honest.

That would have been the 1973 Saint Louis fire. It's not just as simple as clicking on a site, but with some input and research, the records can often be reconstructed. It's certainly worth doing for any veteran still alive, or for those whose memories are cherished.

I'll go ahead and opine that the one fire and its notoriety has given rise to more false claims of heroism and bullshit stolen valor than all the liquor ever poured across VFW bar-tops. My guys used to say that there were two classes of WWII vets: those who had won the war single-handedly, and those who'd actually seen action.

Cruz (paraphrasing): Bolton does not impact legal issue before the Senate, which is whether the President has the authority to investigate corruption. Dem House Managers have built their entire case on the proposition that investigating the Biden/Burisma corruption was baseless and a sham. That proposition is absurd; we've just seen two hours of evidence of the corruption. So an investigation was not only reasonable and justified, but the President had an obligation to investigate corruption that potentially ran to the highest levels of the U.S. government. (I am glad that this argument is being made forcefully.

In response (at 2:50), a media hack suggest jailing his 9 year old kid on the false premise that the only thing the investigation is concerned with is that Crackhead Biden got a job.

242 That sidebar thing on dance is hilarious, in a cringy way only a college paper can achieve. But the comments that follow are even more ridiculous and hilarious.

One commenter noted that white people can and do dance quite well -- in culturally white styles like line dancing, waltz, ballet, etc. So claiming that white people are incapable of dancing simply because of their overpowering whitenitude is inaccurate. Of course, to shore up their woke bonafides, they insisted on bashing Christianity (see I'm with you!).

They were responded to with how that didn't count because what mattered was modern hip hop "POC" dancing and so the point was moot.

301 Went to my dad's best friend's funeral two weeks ago, deep in "Bitter Clinger" country. He was company clerk of 394 Inf, and things were quite busy in mid-December 1944. Busy enough that all the company records were captured by the VI Panzerarmnee.

For about two months, in between moving their HQ quite a few times, seeing a little shooting, and the day by day work of a rifle company, he and a squad of others typed and typed and typed all day long, in trucks and in tents, re-creating all those files.

And right about the time they'd finished, they re-captured all those files from the retreating Germans.
It was a cruel damned war, in more ways than we can imagine.

302 Mark Cuban has decreed that no Maverick shall ever wear the #24. This is bordering on ridiculous and from what I've read about Bryant, something he would not have been in favor of.

I an kind of mildly annoyed with the whole Jackie Robinson worship day in baseball each year, but the man was a pretty phenomenal person and a damn fine player. He accomplished something rather remarkable for the game, so I get it.

But Kobe was just another dude playing ball, he didn't do anything groundbreaking or unique, he was a really good player, but didn't break any barriers or do something first. His entire claim to special treatment is... dying.

303 I'll never forget the moment Justice Thomas called out Biden et al for their attempt at what I think he called a "high-tech lynching". It woke me from not caring about politics. If they could destroy Thomas, an example of everything the Democrats professed to celebrate, then all of us are fair game. Under similar circumstances, I pray I (and we) would have the integrity and stalwart courage Thomas showed.

Most likely based on arrest of a woman employee of some Canadian bio-lab. Lab working on at cures for SARS and MERS type viruses, not weaponizing them.

To clarify, what I heard was that the spy took the strain from the Canadian lab, it ended up in Wuhan, and the Chinese proceeded to weaponize it.

Posted by: joncelli, because somebody had to at January 28, 2020 11:52 AM (RD7QR)

My theory? This is China's Chernobyl.

They have a relatively new Level 4 viral research facility in Wuhan. They probably were studying the Coronavirus in question, and it got out - either an employee accidentally brought his work home with him, or animals from testing were improperly disposed of (such as sold to a local butcher).

The Chinese government knew exactly what it was after reconstructing events, hence the sudden lockdown and attempt to contain it.

Right now, they're downplaying it and blaming natural causes to try to save face.

The truth is likely very inconvenient for the Communist Party, pointing at either incompetence or corruption as the cause of the release.

363 I teach high school at an inner-city school on the Great Plains. I had a student who won a Horatio Alger scholarship (which essentially pays for their undergraduate and a master's degree in college - if they so choose to stay in school and pursue the scholarship to its furthest limit).
The student came from a very tough home situation. Oldest of several siblings. Parents with drug issues. She managed to be a great student, care for her siblings, and still be involved via a dramatic juggling act that she mostly kept quiet about until it could no longer be hidden.
When she accepted the award, there was a dinner in Washington, D.C., which was of course covered by the foundation. A key donor and their wife/significant other were seated at each table (there was only one award winner per table, along with those that accompanied them). My student sat next to Clarence Thomas and his wife. The student was not overly politically active at the time, and had not been taught in her history course about his confirmation process. As a result, he was an unknown to her.
Mr. Thomas and he wife were incredibly gracious. He talked with her about her life, and its struggles. He shared his own as a young, impoverished boy who had to find a route in life. He told her how he does not take part in much of the Washington social world, but when he does, it has to be meaningful - hence is activities with the foundation. At the end of the evening, he gave my student his personal phone number (direct line) and told her if she ever needed someone to talk to, or needed help as she encountered challenges in her academic career and life, don't hesitate to call him. In addition, her gave her a small silver cross he kept in his pocket. He said it was something he had carried since his youth, a a sort of a reminder to keep struggling, keep trying, and always keep the faith, no matter how dark the days were.
My student was incredibly touched by how Mr. and Mrs. Thomas treated her, and it stuck with her as she continued on her education journey and on into her professional life.
I just wanted to share this story. It is probably so far down the comment chain no one will read it. But I hope some do. These are the kind of things that many political people package to be said about them to advance their career. But few are like Thomas, where they due it because they believe it is the right thing - and they do not make their actions and issue of public consumption.

Posted by: Big Sam at January 28, 2020 02:16 PM (6hTKo)

365 363. Big Sam--great story. Wish I could move it up the chain.

I have found reading Justice Thomas's rulings to be a pleasure. Very well reasoned. Sometimes intense. So of course the racists on the left allude that his reasoning and writings are the opposite of that.
