Trump: "It is my profound honor to be the first president in U.S. history to attend the March for Life!"
It's hard to take people who are plainly more liberal than conservative shrieking "Trump's not a real conservative" when for 40 years those same undercover liberals have strongly advised GOP presidents to stay away from the March for Life.
Is Trump really a conservative? I don't know. Is my lawyer really on my side? If he keep doing a good job at pressing my claims in court and defending me from accusations, do I care if he's "really on my side" or just on my side because I pay him? Is my lawyer acting like he's on my side just because he loves me or due to the facts that our interests align, and he can expect to profit by advancing my interests? Does it matter? You know, Milton Friedman said, approximately, never count on a politician to "do the right thing." Only count on politicians to do things which are in their own interest. And Donald Trump has, for whatever reason, decided that advancing the conservative cause is in his own self-interest. Meanwhile, the NeverTrump critics of the billionaire's-playground "conservative media" have an entirely different set of interests -- career interests which include making sure they're always considered "safe and reasonable Polite Company Conservatives" who can be hired by Michael Bloomberg and other leftwing media tycoons, and making sure their columns comport with the political and economic imperatives of the identities-concealed AEI corporate/billionaire donors paying their home mortgage payments. Trump acts as if he's on my side. Which the True Conservatives never do. The "True Conservatives" only seem to get emotionally invested in politics when it affords them a chance to attack real conservatives and make a show for their liberal friends of "patrolling their own." Always eager to build up goodwill with possible future liberal employers... at the expense of losing all goodwill from actual conservative voters. These guys are "not on your side." They do not write for you. You are not their clients. You are their commodity, the thing they package up and sell to their actual clients, their employers, their donors. Ever wonder why they spend so much time trying to convince conservatives of the rightness of liberal ideas, and so little time trying to convince liberals of the rightness of conservative ones? So here's that Fake Conservative Trump, doing what "Real Conservatives" have always lacked the courage to urge presidents to do. Or have been paid not to urge them to do.Given that it was during last year's March for Life that the "True Conservative" grifters in our movement decided to use their influence to slander a pro-life 16-year-old for the crime of Being White While Protesting, it's a great time to re-read Julie Kelly's carpet-bombing of the "Call Out 'Conservatives'" who gleefully join the left whenever possible.
"Unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House," Trump declared. He mentioned his administration's efforts on the Mexico City Policy, a pro-life rule on Title X funding, support for the Little Sisters of the Poor, new rules preserving faith-based adoption, and his 187 confirmed originalist federal judges. "Sadly, the far-left is actively working to erase our God-given rights, shut down faith-based charities, ban religious believers from the public square, and silence Americans who believe in the sanctity of life," the president declared. "They are coming after me because I am fighting for you and we are fighting for those who have no voice, and we will win."
On Sunday afternoon, as the media's narrative fell apart and the reality of the situation came into view, National Review quietly removed Frankovich’s article from its website. Rich Lowry, the outlet's editor, explained in a very brief post that he and Frankovich had been duped by a "hoax" and that Frankovich's "strongly worded post" had been taken down. Lowry also deleted a few of his own tweets that inaccurately portrayed the incident. That was it. Rather than acknowledge that the editor and deputy editor for a once reliable and thoughtful conservative magazine were complicit in mob-shaming teenage boys attending a pro-life rally, they quickly excused their behavior as nothing more than gullibility. There was no apology, save for this quasi mea culpa. There was no "calling out" other conservatives who also had participated in the viral assault on innocent young boys. Two NRO articles addressed the the media’s malfeasance in the matter. In particular, "Nathan Phillips Lied, The Media Bought It," wrote Kyle Smith. But the fact that editors for National Review also bought into the various lies escaped mention. This also included senior editor Jay Nordlinger, who deleted a January 19 tweet that read, "the images of those red-hat kids surrounding and mocking that old Indian are unbearable. Absolutely unbearable. An American disgrace." Jonah Goldberg hand-waved away Frankovich's vicious post as just "different people reaching different conclusions or having different opinions."Goldberg and Lowry also retweeted false accounts of the event to their hundreds of thousands of followers, inviting even more people to join in in the public lynching of a boy.
So, what motivated a seemingly measured man like Frankovich to pen a midnight hit piece on teenagers? What compelled Lowry and Nordlinger to join the outrage mob, and Goldberg to defend their choice? Why do NeverTrump (or even SometimesTrump) "conservatives" like Lowry more often than not side with the Left's mercenaries in the media who are hellbent on destroying this presidency and the people who support it? After all, these are the same folks who warn us on a daily basis that the president cannot be trusted, that he’s a dishonest purveyor of the truth, and that his cult-like followers have no ability to distinguish fact from fiction. The easy explanation for their bad behavior this weekend would be confirmation bias, the propensity to select or ignore evidence to support a specific viewpoint. Anti-Trump "conservatives" long ago decided that Donald Trump not only is unfit for office, but that his supporters are ignorant rubes with racist tendencies. (NR's David French wrote recently that Trump is the reason for a supposed--but actually imaginary--rise in white supremacy.) In an interview Monday night, Goldberg again defended his side’s confirmation bias by invoking another tactic--false equivalence. "The confirmation bias that says, ah ha, this proves that the people I disagree with aren’t just wrong, they're evil, which is rampant on both sides of the aisle these days." Contrary to how Goldberg tries to sell it, it's pernicious on one side: His. But this time they crossed a line.Yes, this time they made it quite clear with whom their true political/cultural allegiances lay. The masks slipped, a little too far to recover in time. And I think we all really want to have more "True Conservatism" preached at us by people who gleefully join with the left in viciously slandering pro-life teens. And we need to have "accountability and honesty" preached at us by people who refuse to this very day to admit their role in the mob savaging, or confess what bad wiring might have caused them to do so.

I don't have much of an opinion on his personal life; I wouldn't live mine that way. I don't think too much about his previous donations to democrats; he was a developer who had to work with the party in power.
What I do care about is that, as we discussed here a while back, since 1989, the GOP has come through on exactly two campaign promises - ending the death tax for the year 2010, and not renewing the AWB.
Meanwhile, Trump has succeeded, or partially succeeded in keeping every promise he made during the campaign that I can think of.
When I vote for someone, I expect results, and Trump is about the only office holder that gives them to me, and that is all I want.

This, right here, is the fundamental problem with their argument. This problem is two-fold, with an addendum:
1) It is an arbitrary purity test. "Really conservative" according to whom? To Bill Kristol? Why is his opinion more valuable than anyone else's on conservative purity?
2) It disregards results. From a purely philosophical standpoint, this might be okay but politics is not purely philosophical - it is also practical. If you have conservative results but fail the purity test, you're still bad and results be damned. This is stupid. This is controlled, uni-variable, first-year academic classroom theorizing in a massively complex, multi-variable real world. This is not to say that philosophy is meaningless, because it isn't - but it cannot be the sole criterion. The people who push this line of reasoning appear to have only this one facet.
The real problem with point #1, though, is that it is unprovable. It assumes Gnosticism. To be a "real conservative" and pass the purity test, to Ace's point, you have to be inside the person's head so as to know if he is a "real" conservative and not just acting like one. This is unknowable. These people are not telepaths. They don't know. They pretend to know because they have some kind of higher, received wisdom on the topic. It is arrogant and it is borderline mad.
By the standards of their own positions, it is impossible for anyone without their Gnostic wisdom to know whether or not someone is a "real conservative." And it just so happens, in their self-serving manner, that all of their friends are in anyone who disagrees with them are out.

Saw like a Reuters headline that went with something like: "Trump breaks precedent to attend anti-abortion rally." Makes it sound like it's bad because it's bad "to break precedent."
But here it's just Trump breaking the long-established precedent of GOP presidents being just a little bit ashamed to have the support of people who ACTUALLY believe abortion is wrong.

I watched Trump's Tim Russert interview from '99, and he says several times that he "hates" abortion. He said he believed in choice, but he looked sincere and showed disgust when he said "hate". He repeated it several times.
I think he may really hate abortion, and is not just on our side because of politics.
In fact, I think much of what he does is based on what he believes. That is hard to fathom from a politician, but it may be so.

I did! I didn't get there early enough to be able to see him, but we could all hear him, loud and clear. He was great, and the crowd was thrilled. It was so exciting to be there.
The March is always well-attended, but I have to say, this was the biggest crowd I've ever seen. It was magnificent.
Although we march for a somber reason, the crowd is always smiling, singing, praying, etc. We are full of joy because we know the truth, and we are there to spread the word. It's a beautiful experience.

I've had a personal dislike of Trump since the early 80's. Hard to forget some of the things he's said in the past and how he did business. I don't know if he's just playing the game now or if these are now hard held beliefs. Either way, he has done a great job thus far in addition to turning on the light so we can see the cockroaches scatter. I don't know. He strikes me (from the interview I mentioned above) to have the hate for abortion of a man who's wife or gf decided to have one. Specifically, his attitude reminded me of a couple guys I have known who have gone through that.

The pro-lifers did what they always do - just smile at them, and keep going. Never engage, never yell, never taunt, just smile and carry on.
The irony is that they stand there across from the Silent No More women, who are holding signs that say "I Regret My Abortion." Those ladies are so brave to be there, and it's very powerful and moving to see them. I hope that some of the protestors may be moved by them some day.

In Brandon Sanderson's novel The Way of Kings, one of the viewpoint characters is considering whether another character really is honorable. The viewpoint character in question had been betrayed by another character who had a reputation as honorable, but wasn't in reality. Trump is like that. Maybe he's personally conservative. Maybe he doesn't care. But for all intents and purposes, it doesn't matter to me because the practical results are the same either way.

Not terribly frequently, but even in places where there are caps on damages, premiums rise to the level the market will bear, which is a function of the cost of living in an area, not the cost of lawsuits. Dentists in your area figured out they can charge $900 for a crown and people won't walk out. That's what they charge.

On the Yom Kippur after 9/11, my rabbi gave a sermon on this topic. He was a reform rabbi and as liberal as you'd expect. But he either wasn't a leftist or he stopped being one as a result of 9/11. He gave the best sermon I ever saw him deliver on that Yom Kippur. He talked about how, while there is all the room in the world for a difference of opinion, there is such a thing as good and evil and we had best not forget it. We had just been given an object lesson in evil and that evil must never be accepted and it was our job as the faithful to use our judgement and prayer to try, every day, to discern evil and keep it separate from the good.
Moral relativism is a cancer. Anyone who subscribes to it is not somebody to whom it is worth listening.

There are Word People, and Action People. And by and large, they each have little regard for the other. So the Word People (and journalists, think tank people, and most politicians are certainly that) largely don't care what people DO, they care what they SAY. And Trump, well, you know, he blusters, he doesn't always speak in complete sentences, he uses crude words and language - the Word People think he's beneath him.
The Action People, on the other hand, are less outraged about a guy who talks about theoretically "grabbing them by the p****," than they are a guy like Clinton, who actually did the deed, or a guy like Biden, who at a minimum sniffs the hair. And the actions they see from Trump on the economy, Iran, immigration, etc., have them firmly on Trump's side.
It's hard to bridge the divide between the 2 sides. I must admit, I've spent most of my life as a Word Person, and I've been slow to warm to Trump because of that. But I'm also devoutly pro-life, and Trump has actually done more for the cause through judges and the March today, than all previous Republican presidents combined. So I'm coming around.

My daughter works at Children's hospital (Denver) as a CNA. She is almost done with nursing school. She just interviewed with the dean and asked to do her final semester clinicals in the NICU at children's. The dean very much approves and will recommend her. I suspect she will be an NICU nurse right out of school. I'm a proud papa. At the very least she will be working a Children's hospital as a nurse.

This is likely what happened and I think it's indicative of a certain mindset of conservatives that they accepted it and still voted for these people. I imagine there are many people who vote based solely on this issue so it's pretty devastating to the psyche to not get any positive reinforcement from the people you voted for.

Lacking that, we could see some serious restrictions on the laws on the books now.

What this impresses upon me is what cowards previous "prolife" presidents were. I wasn't Trump fan, and I admit I wrote in rather than vote for him in 2016 (I've come around, y'all, MAGA 2020). That he is the only president to *ever* attend the March for Life, even though every R president in my lifetime has claimed to be prolife, should make those other presidents ashamed of themselves. I'm ashamed of them.
