Lisa Murkowski: Why are the Democrat House Managers Demanding That We Go Through the Hassle of Calling Witnesses Whom They Themselves Refused to Call?

At Hot Air, quoting the Hill:

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who has been seen as a swing vote, appeared wary of a legal fight, characterizing House Democrats as trying to get the Senate to go through a legal battle they bypassed.

"It's kind of like the House made a decision that they didn't want to slow things down by having to go through the courts," she said. "And yet now they’re basically saying you guys need to go through the courts. We didn't but we need you to. That's kind of where we are."

That doesn't mean she's against calling witnesses. She's flighty and liberal.

But the Democrats can't be happy to hear the one indispensable "Republican" making the Lindsey Graham case against calling witnesses.

More: Susan Collins was so "stunned" by Jerry Nadler's claim that anyone who voted against the rules the Democrats wanted was engaged in a "cover up" that she wrote to John Roberts, demanding that he caution the House managers.

This, I suppose, was what prompted John Roberts' "Both sides" missive a few days ago.

More: Via Twitchy, not-cute bimbo Alisyn Camarota offers a brief criticism of Adam Schiff before being, it appears, told by Jeff Zucker through her earpiece to get Back on Message.

But, the amusing thing is that Rudy is threatening to release documentation of all sitting politicians who are getting, what amounts to, kickbacks on foreign aid. What did you steal? asked the judge.

Hmmmm...the judge is not trying to thrown an old lady into the slammer for a long time, but still needs to render a verdict. So he asks, How many peaches in the can?
6 peaches she replied.
OK, says the judge, 6 peaches, 6 days in county lockup.

Neither side wants witnesses to start talking about corruption in Ukraine and foreign aid but both sides want to blame the other for the failure of impeachment. This impeachment is not about removal, fairness to DJT and the defense, or principle. This is about protecting the sources and means of looting the public treasury for their clientele networks and protecting their incumbency/progeny/partisan balance in Senate.

I also think that a private understanding is that Roberts would squelch any principled conservative such as Thomas or Scalia and prevent the court from rolling back liberal precedents.

Think of Roberts as the reincarnation of David Souter by the first GHWB. Someone with little paper trail, looks good on tv, right credentials, and willing to play the political game of hiding his true preferences and most importantly willing to bend the agenda of the court to stare decisis rather than rolling back liberal precedents like Roe v. Wade. Roberts is an incrementalist at best and an unprincipled political hack at his worst.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 24, 2020 02:01 PM (fUqBx)

I disagree - I don't think he's great, and I think he's way too concerned with the public perception of the Court and trying to maintain an ideological "balance" - but name any Chief Justice of the last 80 years and I can show you a long list of decisions they participated in that were as bad as anything Roberts has done.

I would say that what I dislike most about him is that he's just another typical Chief Justice.

Posted by: the dandy at January 24, 2020 02:11 PM (bR08X)

It will be interesting, maybe disgusting, to see how the Q&A session goes. Sixteen hours are scheduled; 16 hours x 60 minutes = 960 minutes. Divided by 100 Senators = 9.6 minutes per question and answer, if each Senator gets to ask one question, and McConnell and Schumer impose an equal time for each Senator's question.

Hell, Schiff can easily filibuster for 9 minutes without saying anything, just like Obummer did in press conferences.

For being a show written by Hollywood commies, TNG knocked it out of the park with The Borg - they created the perfect face of communism/socialism/fascism/all other forms of Collectivism.

With the sci-fi trapping of a cybernetic hive mind, they showed what an absolute horror it is to completely obliterate the individual will and subordinate it to the "Greater Good".

As with every other such movement, they maintained the lie of "improving your quality of life" in the face of dismal, dreary realities that no sane being would willingly endure.

And their technological adaptation reflects the world of politics, and how they are forever changing their labels and hiding behind other movements, so that nothing that works against them once ever does again. "Real Socialism has never been tried!", etc.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 24, 2020 02:17 PM (plu6+)

I know that effect. It happens when someone wants to make me care about something I do not care about. And they keep insisting. They keep badgering me. And slowly my annoyance grows to the point that I grind my teeth. And then start swearing under my breath. And then I turn around and scream cuss words at them, insisting that I have been convinced that I will never do what they want me to do so help me God Almighty.

Now, maybe I am unique in my reaction to this sort of stuff, but I suspect that a lot of people are approaching the "screaming and threatening stage" with the media.

261 195, Tom Servo,

I disagree, his Obamacare decision disgusted me and apparently the dissent as well. His Census decision recently was reprehensible. Roberts apparently does the Warren Burger thing where he waits for the others to commit during merits and then tries to manipulate the decision through the opinions process. In the last century, White, Taft, Hughes, and Rehnquist were truly great chief justices and apparently fair to those serving with them on the court. The political chiefs, where politics outweighs the Constitution are Warren, Burger, Fiske, and now Roberts. Vinson was merely meh. Warren was pretty bad but that was also because conservatives were outnumbered on the court, Warren did not have to dissemble.
For this, I would more or less count his appointment as an unfortunate extension of the fruitless GWB presidency.

However, from all appearances, most of the FISA mess is also directly linked to Roberts as he appoints the judges and the chief judge and must have known about the stench coming from that court over political operatives using the national security apparatus to spy.

I hope that he is forced out of office for that alone as not befit of being a Chief Justice. That is what blind institutionalism and political gamesmanship will do. His cowardice in not calling out this abuse during the Obama years should never be forgotten. He willing spat on his oath to the Constitution by rubber stamping illegal searches under his watch that created pain and suffering for others. Since he did not call it out, he is a participant and should pay the piper in reputation and loss of office.

331 274, The Christopher Taylor, Esq. I follow the court and its history for professional reasons so reading balderdash political reasoning from a guy bright enough to know better, e.g. Roberts, is especially infuriating. He is not stupid but he is so artless in his subterfuge in such as his admonishment to the Senators that both sides are bad that it is apparent he is gutless. The best thing that would happen is what happened to Burger, when Reagan got enough appts on the court, Burger was more or less ostracized during his final years as he pissed off both the liberals and conservatives. He got the idea and resigned become the head of the constitutional bicentennial.

I think if Roberts is implicated in this FISA mess and that DJT knows, Roberts should get the Justice Goldberg treatment. Send him to the UN as the new delegate as a retirement gift--he will fit right in with the diplomats.

To The James Madison, Esq. heh regarding Rogaine--more than you know.
I rather think that powdered wigs should make a comeback--beats what I have left. But then again, I have been reliving the 1600-1800's recently via projects so the wigs are beginning to look stylish.

The Dakar Rally used to go through Morocco (along with other parts of North Africa). They had to move the race to South America for a few years because of the Religion of Peace. They raced it in Saudi Arabia this year. No beheading's that I know of happened though.

352 317, Mike Hammer, neither side want witnesses as they might disclose the looting done by the ruling class Senators in the chambers. However, the lawfare guys that plan this stuff and feed it to the dems etc. are pushing for witnesses like Bolton and Mulvaney simply so that executive privilege is invoked which stops the trial, blocks up the Senate, until the courts can decide on privilege. Keeps the DJT judicial nomination train sidelined during the meantime and stretches out the impeachment for propaganda purposes.

But, the fallback is for the Dems to blame Republicans and use looter cash from Bloomberg, Steyer, et al to blanket Rep. Senate seats at risk in 2020 alleging coverup. As a general rule, the Dems will always blame Republicans for the sins of what Democrats are doing.
