Senate GOP Aides Increasingly Confident They Can Wrap This Up Without New Witnesses

NeverTrumpers sad!

Republican aides in the Senate believe it is increasingly likely that Democrats will fail to convince enough GOP Senators to call additional witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial.

Democrats, who face a 53-47 Republican majority, need at least four Republican votes and no Democrat defections to call witnesses after opening arguments, but 10 senior staffers to key Senate Republicans say that flipping more than three votes will be a tall order, according to a report from Axios.

Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Joni Ernst of Iowa were all targeted initially by Democrats, after several signaled willingness for witnesses in the buildup to the trial.

Thom Tillis s expressed doubts about the need for witnesses a week ago, and he's not impressed with the Democrats' "continuous loop" of "Impeachment by repetition:"

If the impeachment is based on the call, any witness would have t have knowledge of the call or be a member of the respective governments who saw the immediate impact from the call (i.e. if Ukraine's PM started shouting after the call to aides, even if they couldn't hear the call itself). That, or fact witnesses related to the Biden corruption that is now directly at issue after being denied by Schiff(for brains).

Unless any potential witness can address these specific areas, then there's really no need for them to testify.

24 on the topic of idiotic arguments that don't pan out - ABC today is pushing this recording from Parnas in which Trump supposedly agrees to fire Yanukovitch. Ignore the fact that a President can recall an ambassador at any time for any reason (which makes this entire story a big "so what") but they don't seem to notice that the recording was at a dinner in April 2018, but the Ambassador wasn't recalled until April 2019. So, if this was Trump ordering her to be immediately removed, everyone including Trump forgot about it for a full year, and then suddenly remembered. Riiiggghhht.

You can't purchase insurance to cover your losses in the event of a crime. The various "Shield" companies arguably cover you for criminal conduct, since the cops would be charging you and self-defense is simply an affirmative defense. If it's unsuccessful, the then-convicted criminal cannot have his defense paid for and would have to reimburse the company for cost of defending them, rendering the insurance worthless, as well as setting up a lot of perverse incentives for the lawyers to tank a self-defense plea.

Exactly - signals. At the beginning, Schiff and Nadler had an opening to make a strong case, they could have spent their time showing why these witnesses were needed, why their testimony would make this case add up in a step by step way. Instead, they've been insulting the Senators and pumping out political diatribe from the failed Mueller investigation.

And the only reason they're giving for more witnesses is their desire to keep this schitt-show going. Any Senator in the middle who might have been sympathetic to them in the beginning now just wants this idiocy to be over as soon as possible.

No, the commissioners in the respective states are prohibiting the representation of those charged with crimes as a matter subject to insurance. In other words, the plans cover your lawyer fees to defend yourself from criminal charges. But you can't buy insurance to represent you for committing crimes---that's flatly illegal. The plans would have to require reimbursement to the insurance company if you lose a self-defense argument.

99 6 Republican senators are up for election where the current polling has it rated toss-up or lean R; all the rest are rated likely to solid R.
They are: AL, AZ, CO, KS, ME, and NC.
Trump won all but CO and ME; but got one EV from ME.

So, even their strategy of dirtying Trump to move those races makes no sense--they are solid R states

Vindman's poor physical condition, whether lethal aid was shipped by the prior administration, and the weight of a European sparrow north-bound in spring consume what passes for most of the "conservative" commentariat, but are stupid and irrelevant to the point.

I'm not trying to argue with you, I have always been interested in the legal aspects of his story and have followed it closely. He was arrested by IRS agents on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, while at a hearing to determine if his California State Bar membership would be suspended. That was in Los Angeles, he's since been transferred to the Prison that made Epstein Famous, in NYC, where he's being held in solitary confinement, which gives all of his old friends the Sadz.

I think the story you linked to concerned a quick appeal he made to get his bond reinstated, and the Judge said "nope! no bail, no bond for you!" So he stays in jail until and through his next trial, coming up quickly.

Fun question. I will answer not in order.
B: Spooky, creepy, weird. Despite their "cultural leaders" this is usually a private affair. Not my business, other than being grossed out by them and making fun of them. Not on the list.

C: Vicious, murderous animals. Not special other than their severity. Have markings that make them stand out. Easy to hunt. Usually individually target their victims or target small groups. Nasty, but they are not in the number one position, though should be dealt with by the police with extreme prejudice.

A: Blend in to the crowd. Work to subvert republican government and impose global communism. A massive cabal staggering toward annihilation and desperately dragging the rest of us behind them. Subtle, pernicious and deep-seated evil that isn't immediately identifiable. Massive scope of victims and civilizational risk. They are the worst.

And I am not being facetious. On balance, I think the journalists are more dangerous and worse than MS-13.

So, an Umbrella policy is good for civil litigation. Can't be used for criminal proceedings.

But we all know lawfare is unrelenting. If someone prevails in court, it isn't unusual for civil litigation to make another stab at it.

Legislation depriving firearms owners or anyone else from securing adequate defense is intolerable and cannot stand.
Posted by: Common Tater

You can't get a policy that covers intentional acts, but you're right that it will cover civil representation and possibly a negligence claim for the killing in civil court.

Even if the citizen wins the criminal case, he can be sued civilly. There's nothing wrong with insurance both for lawyers fees and injury liability in the civil context.

USCCA had 2 problems in Washington: #1 they weren't a licensed insurer. That's kind of a big deal. #2 was the criminal act prohibition, but that could be remedied by a mandatory repayment if the self-defense argument fails and the insured is convicted. But then the insurance itself is useless since you are gambling entirely on one judge's opinion of justified self-defense, and facing a massive bill if you lose that one issue at trial.

It's a difficult situation for sure. That's why you really never want to have to shoot someone. Thankfully in 30 years of carrying, I never have even had to draw (because if I'm drawing, I'm firing). Their life better be over, but yours probably is, too.

If you look at the CDC's page on coronavirus it sounds like your average winter "I don't feel so well, but it'll clear up in a couple of days" non-event. Runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, fever, general feeling of being unwell.

Sure, some people die from it, and that's awful, but tens of thousands of people die from the flu every year, and we don't usually get this amount of freakout.

Something doesn't add up.

Yes, of course. But the open question is *why* they're lying. Do they just want to run a massive quarantine op to see how it works in real life in case there's unrest? Are they simply over-reacting due to their population densities and terror of contagion? Is it way worse than they say and this isn't an over-reaction at all? Something else altogether?

I don't know and I don't know we can know. But given that, I take the stance that we ought to suspend regular travel from China until we find out what the hell is going on. They're making a lot of noise on this and it looks bad. Who knows why, but if it is that worst-case contagion scenario, why not take some basic steps like limiting transit to here from there?

396 Reports are that it kills about 10% of those it infects. When you're talking about China, if it infects 1/4 of the population, and 10% of that quarter dies, you're looking at upwards of 30 million.

See Allahpundit.

Like all cucks, when the situation became grim for the GOP late in the primaries, he swallowed what they thought was the bitterest possible pill, and supported Cruz over Trump. When Cruz lost in Indiana, dropped out, and endorsed Trump, he spent months simply radiating incandescent hatred for Cruz.

They hated the man before, but this perceived betrayal turned it up to 11.

If that's the case then a vaccine for the new strain can *probably* be developed fairly easily but if it is a rapid contagion then production becomes a real problem and with it you get rolling quarantine and rationing for it. That is not a terrible outcome on-balance if it's something as bad as or worse than, say, the 1918 flu.

Hong Kong has 'em by the short and curlies. The city is essential to the Chinese economy as one of the main hubs of foreign investment, trade, and finance.

If the government came down like a ton of bricks on them, the foreign businesses would flee, Hong Kong would become like any other Chinese city, and China's economy would enter a depression overnight.

We'll still pay full fare. Some things don't change.

Unless, of course, is it as bad as the Chinese actions (though not their statements) are implying it is. In that case, drug manufacturers will probably be partially nationalized to produce as much vaccine as technologically possible and everyone will pay the same at-cost price plus whatever compensation is given the owners of the manufacturing. At least, that is my assumption. If something with high mortality and rapid spread were to hit badly, I imagine a wartime-type response on the production side and rationing on the distribution side.

With a name like that, you just know the members are the most fuckup reprobates imaginable in their private life.

Along those lines one of my Rules of Life is never trust a company with "Honest" in their name. They are invariably deceitful lowlife pricks.

There are similar ones like when companies can't get enough of telling you how much good they are doing with your money. Again... deceitful lowlife pricks. Always.

471 343 China's main viral research center is in Wuhan. Why did they come down so quickly on this one?

I'm willing to bet it's because they knew exactly what it is from
the start. It probably escaped containment, and like most other
single-party systems, they're trying to cover it up and save face. (see
also, Chernobyl)

The first cases were in the Wuhan Meat and Fish Market.

Someone at the Viral Research Facility took a couple of test animals out the back door and sold them to a butcher at the Wuhan Meat Market. Maybe it is someone that had been doing it for years, supplementing their income by selling a few clean, excess and unused test animals regularly. Except this time the test animals weren't unused?

Reports are that it kills about 10% of those it infects.

The *reports* that I have seen say 3%. However, it's similar to SARS, for which the death rate was 9%. Also the disease takes about 2 or 3 weeks before the person dies and the outbreak is in the early stages.

In the case of SARS, the chi coms *did* cover it up and it was exposed due to cases turning up in Vancouver.

For SARS there were ultimately 8000 infections and 750 deaths. Until there is more evidence, I would assume that the outcome here will be similar.

Most patients who have died have been ill for a couple of weeks and have succumbed to pneumonia, which is a secondary infection.

Joe Rogan has never claimed to be conservative. He's said many times he's left on everything except for 2A.
Posted by: Augustine

Exactly. He's a rational liberal. An old-school democrat of the working man. Rogan doesn't buy into the PC garbage or the tranny stuff, and for that, the Left has excommunicated him. He's still a lib Dem kinda guy, so this is no real surprise. It's more surprising that he's not voting for Tulsi, since he's "endorsed" her just as much if not more than Bernie on several occasions.

The only reason this is getting traction is b/c some homo twitter Leftist called on Bernie to "disavow" Rogan's tepid statement of "I'll probably vote for Bernie, I guess", which Sanders' camp immediately cut into an ad. Rogan's podcast reaches more listeners than any other single episode of any show in America right now. He's got a massive following.

He's really not a bad guy, and he's be the first to admit that he's a moron comedian who doesn't know shit about most things.
