Mid-Morning Art Thread [Kris]

Bellei Card.jpg

The Card Game #2
Gaetano Bellei

Bellei as an Italian painter of scenes of regular people living regular lives. He seems to have been especially attracted to faces, and how an individual’s face can reveal personality and tell a story. The artist’s technique and style is highly academic, but where contemporary academic painting gets pretty stale by this point in history, Bellei’s work is quite charming. His paintings are full of joy and life.

Bellei painted a lot of card games between different groups of people—elderly villagers, priests, monks, folks in a pub, etc. For me, this was one of his better versions of the theme. This is also the second of two using this specific group of people. In the first work (seen here: https://tinyurl.com/wcyee23), the game has become intense. The player on the left considers his hand as his friends show worry or concern. The group on the right, displaying zero poker-face, is confident in their cards and wait for the player on the left to accept the inevitable defeat. In the second painting, the player on the left shows his hand and the results are wonderful.

Bellei composes his figures in #2 so that they frame the card table, a flat trapezoid in the dead middle of the work. The card game is the prime mover of the action and mood of the piece. The absolute center is occupied by the winning hand and four glasses of wine—items of pleasure. No money is on the table. This was not a game with high stakes, or any stakes really, except bragging rights. This was a friendly game of cards between old friends. There was no chance of hurt relationships, just bruised egos and good-natured ribbing. The loser may have had to buy the winners a round of drinks, which is why the very happy man in the center is filling four glasses.

Many times with a color scheme like this, the mood is somewhat dank and drab, sometimes dour. But here Bellei uses these colors to indicate the commonness of the figures. They are everyday folks, doing everyday things. If the colors were bright or pure, the painting would look too romanticized and fake. This looks real—a scene one would see in any gin-joint in any town in all the world. The browns and blacks have warm tones and highlights, and the painting is dotted with reds. Yellow provides a final, overall wash to warm it up further. The skin tones are rosy, and the smiles and laughter lighten the mood further. The mood is all joy. There is nothing at all to feel bad about here.

Each figure and face is carefully rendered and arranged so that every gesture and every expression is separate and distinct. They can be read clearly and easily. The woman on the far left is the only figure sitting straight up-and-down. She frames the work and makes sure the viewer’s eyes stay in the work. She directs our gaze to the rest of the group. The next two figures look very similar—same expression, same smile, similar pose, similar clothes, same colors. They literally double the movement rightwards towards the losers. The man on the very right edge counters and almost mirrors the woman on the left. He reflects the viewer’s gaze back into the work. The losing woman is probably my favorite character here. She is the Kermit Drinking Tea meme with an “I told ya so” look on her face.

This is a very charming painting with a lot going on. It has a simple theme and uses simple people. It is jolly and wholesome… and just plain fun to look at.

28 The guy with one tooth missing (that we can see, anyway) reminds me of actor David Wayne, who played Ellery's father the Inspector on Ellery Queen in the '70s. Earlier in his career, though, he wore his hair in a crewcut for certain roles, and that's what this fellow looks like.

One could imagine this scene being the focus in a PBS adaptation of Dickens or one of his contemporaries.

87 Kris,

Thanks for the good analysis on why the painting is so effective. The colors in the background and wood are rich but not glaring. In fact, there are no hard colors. Even the clothes are more brown softened by lighter hues. (I love the use of the word 'dour'.) The poses are very much individual, each inviting the viewer's attention, but also serving as a frame for the card game in the center.

This work makes me think of both Rembrandt and Norman Rockwell with the everyday scene and the emphasis on the distinctive models. The Rockwell part also includes the playfulness of the scene.

I hadn't heard of Gaetano Bellei before but I plan to look up more of his paintings. Besides the technical artistry, his approach to enjoyable moments is pleasant.

PDT mentioned the Tea Party early in his campaign. He said something to the effect of "The Tea Party got a raw deal" from Republicans, which is very true. They wanted nothing to do with the people (us deplorables) or anything we dared suggest they do, like be fiscally responsible.

As best I could tell, he was sympathetic to the TP. I think the Republican Party needs to be taken over and controlled by the TP much like the Democrat Party has been taken over by Progressives.

The TP got subverted the moment their soles hit Washington paving stones. None of them were strong enough to avoid the temptation. I think they had a party leader like Trump to keep them in line and shoot iron into their spines, it might have ended up different.

The TP crowd strike me, in retrospect, as competent lieutenants or majors in desperate need of a strong general. They found them in Washington, but those generals were bad and directed their competence to the service of the swamp.

267 Wonderful analysis on the structure of the painting, and how it functions. Genre scenes were relatively low in the hierarchy of academic painting subjects, but this one shows the skill and wit of the artist. Looks like someone you'd want to have a glass of wine with.

268 The unfree press, as is their wont, mischaracterized the Tea Party as
being a reaction only to Gaylord instead of part and parcel of GWB's
RINO spendapalooza and open borders tendencies. The GOPe made it
obvious that they weren't going to be responsive one fucking bit to the
base.

Yeah, I think the Pubbies negative reaction to the TP started to open some eyes to the Uniparty in Washington. IMO, the TP simply wanted to right the ship of state by obeying the Constitution as it's written, balancing the federal budget and stopping the influx of illegals across the Mexican border, among a few other commonsensical things.

We were just so deplorable for wanting that. How dare we oppose our globalist/socialist overlords who seek a New World Order...

Those are fascinating, I had not seen the Algerian art before. My personal favorite of ancient art is that found in Chauvet Cave, especially the Lions. Those look like a charcoal drawings that are as lifelike and vibrant as anything that could be done today. (search for Chauvet Cave Lions)

What I find most fascinating in the Algerian drawings is a picture of what looks like a very early Egyptian-style chariot. That supports the view that when what is now the Sahara began to dry up about 6,000 or 7,000 years ago, the survivors of the cultures living across the area migrated over to the last good reliable source of water, the Nile, and became the base from which classical Egyptian Civilization grew out of.

There's something electric about holding something or touching something centuries/millennia old. I once touched a piece of an old Roman wall and the emotions of placing my hand in the same place as someone 2000 years ago did were indescribable. But something 12,000? I think my brain would actually shut down for a moment.

And how we owe so much to those initial innovations. Man's history of tool-making has been one of increased resolution and precision. We use our hands to make crude, giant tools. Those crude, giant tools beget slightly less-crude, slightly smaller tools. That process has continued - with interruptions and wild setbacks - for millennia - to the the point that we're splitting atoms and non-destructively invading single cells.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 29, 2020 10:31 AM (uKj5K)

It's also a key to why the Nazi message was so seductive to the German people. For a myriad of historical reasons, especially the large Jewish population which was in Central Europe because it was more friendly to them than most of Europe, Germany in the late 19th - early 20th century truly was the epicenter of Science, Music, Art (competing with France there) and Industry. Every other country in the world was trying to copy what they were already doing.

And it's easy to forget that before 1871, Germany had NO centralized government - probably a big reason they had been free to advance in so many different areas. Bismark and the Kaiser put an end to that.

So, by the 30's you had a population which rightfully felt that they were the most advanced civilization on Earth, and yet here they were, being completely humiliated by their enemies. It was the perfect breeding ground for the Nazi disease - Just Follow Me, Get rid of these People, and you will have all you desire!!!

But it was all consistent. it was all on-message. The Nazis had a major brand and they enforced the standards in *every* element of life, from the art and propaganda to the official clothing to the typefaces to the Bauhaus-derived architecture. It was all on point - the state is key, the directed culture is paramount, you are insignificant and your only hope is to comply and join.

I don't like a lot of it, even if I can look at it objectively (I can't) but their marketing was nearly flawless across all dimensions.

The Nazis had a major brand and they enforced the standards in *every*

the state is key, the directed culture is paramount, you are
insignificant and your only hope is to comply and join.

433 Why anybody would believe the numbers given by the Chinese gov't is beyond me. We really haze no clue what's going on over there and won't know anything for a few weeks after its spread to the first world. Posted by: Brian in New Orleans

No BINO. Not all will get it. Only those who had themselves prepared in advance by receiving the deep state yearly virus pre load. This allows the bug to spread widely before illness debilitates the vector host and keeps them from spreading the disease. We expect nearly full penetration of the world population. And with an death rate of over 2% - that's gonna leave a mark. Goodbye global economy.

Das stimmt genau. Pretty much a restatement of the point you're making: Part of creating that herd mentality was removing the interpretive impulse that arises with viewing the "degenerate art" that the Nazis opposed. Stifle that impulse to think or view with anything but acceptance (which is the natural appreciation of a very literal, unimaginative, obvious aesthetic), and you've come quite a distance toward stifling the critical impulse in the individual.

Some of it I do like. There's a modern romantic quality to Hitler's WWI ruins paintings. Hitler replaces Friedrich's collapsed and forgotten cathedrals with bombed-out villages. There's a sadness in some. The sadness is also caused by the knowledge of what Hitler was to become-- how he took beauty and the classical ideal and turned it into a nightmare.

453 According to Business Insider and their coronavirus tracker, thus far 80 infected person have died in this outbreak and 54 have recovered. That puts the death rate at 60%.

Total cases reported at 2,794.

*******

That's not the death rate.

In an infectious outbreak there are four groups:

1. Susceptible (have not been exposed to the virus)
2. Exposed
3. Infected (including pre-symptomatic or latent infection)
4. Recovered (no longer ill or with detectable virus)

Right now, of the numbers being reported there are many who are in various stages of illness, some of whom will die and many of which (likely most) will recover. Difficult to determine what the eventual death rate will be until more data emerge and the epidemic evolves, but it's looking like between 1 and 3% in early stages.

From the Business Insider data you posted death rate would be #deaths/#total cases or 80/2794 which is 2.8%. That early number should go down over time (earlier diagnosis, medical intervention, etc.)

Ancient items like that are fascinating, because unless you find them in situ they're so hard to date. I have a piece an Uncle from South Dakota gave me, he found it near a freshly graveled road. It's an oblong smooth and rounded piece of granite, size in between a hardball and a softball, and a groove has been carefully chiseled around the middle so you can see how you could put a split stick handle on it, lash it in tight, and it would be a powerful head knocker.

Since it was found near a Sioux reservation, he always called it Sioux, but I've realized it could be thousands of years older then them. No way to really ever know for sure.

470 Germans were famous only for being lazy drunks up until about the 1850's. Several sources from the pan-German movement kept exhorting them to get their asses in gear, and finally they did. Thing was, a group of rabbis around Frankfurt were telling the Jews of central Europe to do the same, and the flowering of scholarship [outside rabbinical texts], music, medicine and science took them from fiddling on the roof to Einstein et al in two generations.
For some, this was part of the new age of Germany. For others, it was the root of the golden age of anti-semitism.

It depends on the progress of the game. If it is a game where I can affect what other people do (Mah Jong is a great example), if it gets to the point where I know I cannot win or the likelihood of my winning is extremely small, I will actively work to subvert the game and thwart the other players.

I think that is a perfectly reasonable approach. If I can't win, try to take out the leader or block the game entirely and continue into the next round.

504 Das stimmt genau.
Posted by: Zod

..........

I read a fictional story that seemed to have quite a realistic premise..

The modernist paintings the Nazis confiscated were snapped up by the Swiss. The Nazis didn't want them, and only kept classical art.

The underlying sub-plot of the book revolved around the private collections the wealthy Swiss held to this day of stolen modern art.

568 As conservatives, we're stuck with a problem caused by the Left - we may WANT to have smaller government and less Federal Control, but how do we deal with a situation where some State (Say, Virginia with gun control, or California with immigration) decided to just totally ignore the Constitution and do whatever they want, Federal Govm't be damned?

They don't realize that they are FORCING us to expand the power of the Federal Government over the States, just to stop their incredibly bad behavior.

The State of Texas has had a similar problem, in that we all prefer for decision making to be made on as local a basis as possible, but then certain localities will get a temporary majority that allows them to pass local laws that completely violate State law. The State has no choice but to step in and slap them down, and then all the critics say "oh, you don't believe in local control after all, do you??"

That's the catch 22. We want less Federal power in most areas, but we absolutely want them to retain and vigorously use their powers as a referee, to quash local violations of rights and national laws, such as the "sanctuary" BS.

604 On any discussion of human behavior whether it is ideology, institutions that are created, the nature of humanity, or morality, binary classifications like liberal/conservative, moral/immoral, good institution/bad institution, are a crude reflection of reality.

People choosing to win arguments on topics like these via rhetoric often use the Texas sharpshooter or cherrypicking examples with their position receiving the best data supporting their argument and assuming the worst data applying to their opponent's argument.

Dialectic tends to get into the weeds and gray areas and the nit-picking arguments often frustrate those that want clear and concise resolutions of conflict.

Classic example is the disagreement over whether Ginger or Mari-Anne is the more desirable of companions. People favoring one or the other will manipulate the arguments using criteria that favor their choice. Resulting arguments then turn pretty much on assaulting the other side's criteria and promoting their own criteria as superior in making this choice.

A dialectic approach could be what are classic timeless criteria of beauty and desirability and then apply this to the specific question.

Or you could argue, why choose just one as beautiful as beautiful in general is dependent on a number of contexts rather than a sterile academic discussion. What one answers one time may be quite different over time due to changes in contextual variables.

Yes, exactly! And it's especially infuriating when they act like they have the power to do whatever they want, when in fact they have no actual power at all - as you pointed out, the Sanctuary City BS is a prime example of that. Another is San Antonio trying to ban Chick Filet from their airport just because some of the City Councilmen read something on the internet on some left wing site, which wasn't even true.

"Do you know what the man's saying? Do you? This is dialectics. It's very simple dialectics, one through nine, no maybes, no supposes, no fractions, you can't travel in space, you can't go out into space, you know, without like, you know, with fractions, what are you going to land on, one quarter, three eighths, what are you going to do when you go from here to Venus or something? That's dialectic, physics, OK? Dialectic logic is, there's only love or hate, you either love somebody or you hate them..."

612 In an infectious outbreak there are four groups:

Posted by: Muldoon at January 29, 2020 10:49 AM (m45I2)

Overall population I'll agree. If you contract it though, only 3 and 4 matter. If you actually are infected, current very small sample, indicates a very high chance of dying from the infection.

613 Libertarians are a utopian variant just as Marxism is or a Theocracy, etc.

Liberty for individuals is the key value for libertarians, Equality (either economic or identity flavors), Religious Values for Theocracy, and organic societal order is key for conservatives.

Thus, contrary to utopian schools, conservatism is really a catchall phrase that can come under pragmatism/realism with a predilection for wanting to maintain social order and peace. That makes it exceedingly difficult to define outside of specific contexts unlike utopian variants.

That is also one of the reasons that Krystol et al. can call themselves conservatives with no sense of irony. In their case, they are wishing to conserve invade the world, invite the world, in order to spread democracy everywhere. Unlike Fujiyama who argued historical inevitability of the triumph of liberal democracy, Krystol, etc. want to hurry the process with outside pressures including military occupation and force upon resistant nations and cultures to adopt global values believed to be compatible with the spread of liberal democracy.

Under this perspective, Soros could call himself conservative as his goal is to maintain spread a variant of liberal democracy and he is simply hurrying up the process by leavening the dough so to speak.
