This is a great subject to argue. I think people realized that in order to try to overcome the ferocious firepower of the weapons, they needed mobility rather than trying to get bogged down in either attacking a fortified line, or having to fall back and wait for the enemy to attack your fortified line. Which is why I think cavalry still had such a large role (or tried to make it play) in military thinking. Technology had advanced to a point where infantry were very, very screwed, but had not advanced to a point where they were unscrewed (tanks and mechanized personnel carriers.) The history is much more complicated. Just as an example, these people could not use modern fire and maneuver because they did not have radio technology. They needed the troops to be in live so they could control them. And the fire these people put down was from hell, they knew what they were doing. The Civil War lasted over four bloody years. If the casualties were lower, would that mean it would have lasted longer? I also came at this with the idea these guys were clueless. But I cam to my own conclusion that it was was much nuanced really. What it really comes down to is whether you think people from the 21st century know better than people from the 19th century did on how to conduct a war. Again, I am not taking shots. I used to believe they were clueless not that long ago. But something about that bothered me. These guys served in the Mexican War. These guys went to West Point. For sure the technology advanced ahead of the tactics, but they did adjust their tactics. If you look at the Civil War lines in 1865, they look a lot like the trenches of WW1., The real thing that changed warfare was the radio. When you could communication from places you could not see, it changed artillery and everything. Fire and maneuver really only came about when an individual could lay down massive fire on his own. Again, i don't have all the answers, I am just giving you what I have learned. This is an amazing subject and well worth discussion. But Cavalry had their place for sure. The artillery did their thing as well. In the end, to hold a place, you needed infantry. The cavalry on both sides did major damage, that can not be challenged. A frontal assault meant your maneuver did not work. But on both sides they led them. And the funny thing is, Gettysburg aside, many of them worked. This is a great subject to argue. I think people realized that in order to try to overcome the ferocious firepower of the weapons, they needed mobility rather than trying to get bogged down in either attacking a fortified line, or having to fall back and wait for the enemy to attack your fortified line. Which is why I think cavalry still had such a large role (or tried to make it play) in military thinking. Technology had advanced to a point where infantry were very, very screwed, but had not advanced to a point where they were unscrewed (tanks and mechanized personnel carriers.) If you look at WWI, the key element is the fact that the powers-that-be had the power to put millions of men into motion, but not the power to maneuver or stop them: once the machine was turned on, it had to run until it succeeded or broke down. The Somme is a classic example: hundreds of thousands of men set into motion, all moving to a plan that could not be adjusted. The only communication they had were runners or telephones - and the latter were almost always knocked out by shell fire. So, the timetable could not be adjusted for the fact that heavy rains had made no-man's-land a quagmire. Now, I will blame the generals for their blunder with wire: they assumed that HE would blow the wire apart, but instead it simply tumbled the wire into an impenetrable mass. They should have tested HE on wire to see what happens, rather than just guessing. That careless blunder cost a lot of brave men their lives. - Change of venue. Can't do it, Congress is the Grand Jury and Jury - Voir dire - Can't do it, the members of the House and Senate vote. There are no fixed rules to disqualify the people who have access to vote from voting. Couldn't trust the Dems anyway. Good cavalry screens on the flanks made it about impossible. (Apologies to Lee and Stonewall Jackson!) Hence Grant's long and essentially failed attempt to turn Lee's flank in 1864, the German failure to flank the Allies near Paris in August 1914 (many factors involved, though), and the following "Race to the Channel" flanking attempts by both sides. And if I seem to defensive of Civil War leaders and soldiers, it is simply because i have so much respect for them. There is also something about our moden day hubris. So often we just assume we are better. I am not saying that about anyone here. But what really kills me is that we think they did not know their own weapons. That would like someone in the future saying we didn't know the net was out to get us. lol. But seriously. This is an important subject. But these men on both sides took the charge seriously. Sure many fell and it often looked like slaughter. But two Civil War facts. The average soldier shot down was killed at 50 yards. That is is about the same as the American Revolution. Why is that? WE can get into it. or just read Hess. Very few people were ever killed by the bayonet in the Civil War. way more met their end that way int the American Revolution. The Civil War also featured a lot of individual units that were quite outstanding, and yet which upper leadership didn't know how to use. I studied the Battle of Chickamauga quite a bit since an ancestor was there, and I noted that one mounted Federal unit was particularly impressive. It was Col. John Wilder's "Lightning Brigade" of mounted infantry, and he had arranged the financing to get every man in his outfit a Spencer Repeating Rifle, which could get off 14 rounds per minute, far superior to almost any other weapon of the time.
His unit had devastating firepower, and was virtually unbeatable - but in that particular battle, Gen'l Rosecrans left them to guard the southern flank and they didn't get involved in the main battle under the line had already collapsed - after that they could only cover the retreat. Wilson (D) had censored US newpapers. A young Army Captain was put in charge of handling the matter, quietly, and although he had no medical training, did an excellent job of understanding the transmission vectors, and shutting them down. Most of these troops got little live fire training as the Army's were created from whole cloth. i believe it went from 5,000 one year, to one million, to 15,000 on the Union side alone. My g-grandfather was in the 23rd Michigan Infantry. The regiment suffered 3 officers and 70 enlisted men who were killed in action or mortally wounded and 4 officers and 257 enlisted men who died of disease , for a total of 334 fatalities.

This is my personal opinion and it has no meaning other than that For sure if I stood on the line, I would want a repeater. Then again, every troop in WW2 wanted a Grease Gun, Tommy Gun, or M1 Carbine. They were wrong as the M1 Garand won that war.
There have been more than a few arguments about whether the USA , AKA North, AKA union should have issued repeaters to the main line troops. It might have made a difference but I as a luddite, doubt it. At Antietam they had 23,000 casualties. They say they had more than any battle in a day but I don't have those numbers. I wold like a repeater, and they made a difference in particular engagements of that war. But in no way did these weapons make a difference. As the well known historian G, Galagher has said. According to that DM article, Ghislaine, like Hillary was using a private email server. Her email address got (accidentally) released in some court document dump, revealing the domain name. That server was immediately breached. One of the benefits of rolling your own email server (and anyone with a Linux install can run their own email servers, and even Windows. I remember playing with some free-ware or shareware email server program for Windows years ago) is that it makes it a little harder for the cops to get at it. They are generally a much greater hacking risk, though, if you're not on top of the latest security stuff. A: Infantry Even more important was that the European armies were focused on movement and open field action. When they (and the Civil war AND the Sino-Russian war) bogged down into trench warfare they just sat and killed each other for no real gain. Small highly mobile groups could be used to really tip things, and that was what cavalry was best at during the Civil war. Some groups, like Cpt Mosby's troopers were geniuses at it. They could hit and disperse and join again to hit again before anything could be brought to bear on them. One of the other reasons lines and volley fire were important was that the rate of fire for each individual weapon was very low, and the hit rate at normal engagement ranges was low. You needed volley fire to guarantee sufficient hits to make a difference. With the Minee ball the firepower was increased and with the magazine rifles it became even higher, as was the accuracy. With quick firing guns it was easier to hit mobile units like cavalry. With machine guns it was a Bad Idea for big horses to go to the front, but they were used in other theaters where the lines hadn't set like in France. The clergy are almost entirely to blame for the degenerate direction that the church has taken. I have every intention of holding their feet to the fire. I came to Christ in '75, from being an unchurched heathen.
Joined a Christian and Missionary Church (a denomination from Baptist roots, but focused on missionary work to the far-east, mostly China), which was near to me. Parted from them when I joined the USAF in '76. Found a new church home in San Antonio in late '78, more of a Charismatic formula, but still tracing roots back to a Baptist lineage. Here's the thing. I never bought into the Dispensationalism of any of their theology. Bible either said what it said, or it didn't. And that's how I still see it, today. Theological nuances and difficulties? No. Only the return of the loving, immortal Lord has the power to do that. But we can show another. We can lead a brother, a daughter or a friend to embrace the illumination over choosing to succumb to a life in darkness, to settle for a fate and stop trying, stop searching, to forget what is good. And that, my friend, is what you writers do here. You illuminate, you lead, you protect, you offer a shoulder for those that cannot see you grasp hold of as the stumble in darkness. Are you angry and sarcastic and pessimistic at times while you do so? Of course, you are human and who could not grow weary in the midst of such inequity. But you also show backbone and determination and you use humor and sheer grit to pass that light on, the light for freedom and goodness, tradition and righteousness, family and God, and you make that flicker shine for many. God bless you all and embolden you to continue to shine until you find your way out. You give hope to those that think these thoughts they too have are burdens that must be borne alone. AK, they offered to "let" another congregation "merge" with us (against our wishes), and within six months, all of us were basically told our services were no longer needed.
Not in so many words, of course, but it was basically a non-hostile takeover. Lots of bad feelings on our part. A few of the members had been young children when ground was broken on that church, and had been there for 50+ years. We came there in our mid-20's, and all 4 of our children were baptized there. So there is a little hope. He is stable, with blood pressure supported. And his oxygen levels are good. They have to figure out why he seems to have so much blood in his belly. So I am going to have some hope and keep praying.

He fell today. Turned out that he was fighting a nasty infection with possible liver problems. I thought he was fine yesterday morning. Now he's on a ventilator and is not coming out of it. They are trying to prepare me to pull the plug.

Schiff as a prosecutor is a scary thought. It wouldn't surprise me if he pulled off a lot of BS resulting in harsher than required sentences. I'm a firm believer in locking people up when they screw up, but punishment should fit the crime. There's probably inmates doing a long stretch when some county time would do. Maybe a little research by some org would be prudent.
