Reductio Ad Absurdum; Or How To Make Leftists Defend The Indefensible

This is exactly the sort of thing that conservatives should be doing...using the rhetoric and flawed reasoning of the left against them.

This state senator is a Democrat who is pro gun-rights, although this is Vermont, which may be the nuttiest state in the union, so it's not surprising.

Bill would ban cellphone use for those under 21

The bill was introduced by Sen. John Rodgers, D-Essex-Orleans. Rodgers said Wednesday he introduced the bill to make a point.

“I have no delusions that it’s going to pass. I wouldn’t probably vote for it myself,” he said.

He said he’s a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and the Legislature “seems bent on taking away our Second Amendment rights.”

He said, based on the information presented in the bill, a cellphone is much more dangerous than a gun.

Read the article and you will see why Vermont is a bit odd. Gun rights are hugely important to many Vermonters, but then so is "establishing an office of child advocate."

But the point stands. Extend Democrat demands to the point of absurdity. The classic and well-used example is the minimum wage. If $15 is good, then $50 must be great!

Here's one: drowning is the most common cause of death among children one to four years of age. Obviously the only solution is to ban children from pools and lakes and the oceans until they are five years old!

12 What I find odd, when some of these Democrats point out how absurd their Party is, is the fact that they remain Democrats.

The nutjobs in their Party think Republicans are worse that Hilter, but many of these officeholders, in state offices and Congress, have to know their own leadership is exponentially more dangerous to their so-called values and positions.

So why do they remain Democrats?

I get it, those split second situations, if you take your eyes off the road for a moment, things happen.

In this case though, there was a mile of traffic in front of us, all at a dead stop. It would have been hard to miss for the 15 seconds or so before it was our turn to stop.

The word is, he wasn't saying anything particularly incendiary, that he was doing it from a position of safety for him, as they weren't going to bring him back to host in the future anyway. And of course, Gervais keeps telling everyone he's a lefty liberal himself, so...

What was so BOLD about what he did? I don't know from bold, but I bet the audience for that insipid awards show, the one Tim Cook was attending, a high percentage of them have NEVER HEARD that Apple employs slave labor to manufacture their devices.

So perhaps Gervais wasn't talking to the assembled pompous assholes, and indeed was trying to speak to the audiences at home/on the internet. The ones who are never reached by the so-called mainstream media.

Maybe if they hear things like Apple employs slaves, it'll sink in. Just a little.

Why are kids in the car anyway? Usually, it's coming or going to/from school.

And where do most kids first get introduced prematurely to sex and violence? At school.

Where do kids first learn about illicit drug and alcohol use? From peers at school.

Hell, where do kids first hear about rayciss rayciss from the cisnormative white Christian male patriarchy?? AT SCHOOL!!

There is a reasonable compromise. He can get one of the old, cheap flip phones with no internet or screen to speak of. Seniors like them because they're easy to understand. He wouldn't even have the temptation to look at the phone every 10 seconds, because there's nothing to see. It's just a nice tool for emergencies.

I thought all along that was a significant part of the shampeachment strategy. To give themselves something to latch onto and pass everyone's time for the next five years. Prolly weight loss.

Studies conducted show that participants drinking two tbsp of ACV a day over 3 months lost an average of 3.7 pounds with other changes to diet.

Researchers attribute it to increased blood flow and ACV may act as an appetite suppressant, IIRC.

All research tends to confirm what we're looking for, because humans are biased, even when doing so-called hard sciences.

And given how political ALL science is becoming, that bias is going to be greater as we go forward, so that human ignorance will grow exponentially.

Or look at it this way, if we could sum up all that is "known" and compare that to all that is not known, it would be the proverbial sand speck in the ocean. So even if what we're looking at is being studied and measured accurately, we're creating bias, simply by studying THAT particular thing, and not the millions and billions of other things we COULD be studying instead. Or looking at it from an infinite number of different angles.

So yeah, Scientism is just as much a religion as all others.

254 All research tends to confirm what we're looking for, because humans are biased, even when doing so-called hard sciences.

Not true. Good researchers "lean into the wind," i.e., do their best to destroy their hypotheses, and exhibit reluctance to accept them, requiring powerful evidence before they do so. If your hypothesis can be destroyed, it SHOULD be destroyed.

Shitty researchers - and here I include all social "science" types, and most biomedical researchers - look to validate their hypotheses, not crush them. This is because they are poorly trained in research, if they are trained at all, and therefore fall prey to the natural human tendency to believe one's own bullshit. Beating that out of graduate students, and making them skeptical and analytical, is the essence of graduate school.

Some lady was driving erratically weaving out of traffic from a way back even crossing onto the left hand side of the road (I didn't see that) but ahead of us I see son's car. Lady with little girl in back drove into this left back side-side pushing into wheel.( It's not drivable and had to be towed) drove someone else into the embankment and their car is not driveable. Then she drove someone else off the road and they got a flat. Son had left his license at home, although the registration and the insurance were in the glove compartment The cop didn't give him a ticket for not having his license, but the crazy driver got three. So now I have to either let him use my car to go to school which starts the 21st or take him myself.

To be fair, there are some shitty researchers in the hard sciences, too. The difference from the other fields is the relative ease of falsifying a hypothesis definitively.

Lousy researchers, in my limited experience, talk about "proving" their hypothesis, and are rarely surprised by their results. If surprised (i.e., discomfited by the results), they tend to come up with some exculpatory explanation (like the Warmageddon types talking about heat lurking in the deep ocean).

I was surprised all the time. It's one of the things that made doing research fun. But the essence of good research is requiring the data to impel one toward a conclusion, rather than the converse.

Which is enough. The Hawthorne experiments in worker productivity:

Increase the amount of light in the room. Productivity goes up!

OK, now decrease it, and we'll see productivity go... up again?

Shorten the workday by 30 minutes. Productivity goes up!

Put it back the way it was. Productivity goes... up again?

Knowing they were being monitored improved peoples behavior, regardless of what changes were made.

Maybe the people in the ACV experiment just kept a better sleep schedule, even if they didn't exercise any more. Or managed stress better. There are a ton of things that affect the body's weight management beyond exercise and eating.

You're right of course, about the purpose of research, and I suspect my "hypothesis" is not really correct. There probably IS more shoddy research in the various biopsychosocial fields.

However, it should also be pointed out, most GOOD researchers in those fields are quite aware that their methods are not going to be as reliable as the "hard" sciences, and all those pesky ethical considerations, as well as their inability to control for all relevant variables... these are KNOWN factors. However, the alternative is NOT good science (as opposed to their bad science), it's no science at all!

And if you've read enough of these studies, as I have, it's generally acknowledged, something to the effect of "the research POINTS in this direction, however we know there are too many variables we can't control here, so....."

So, lessee ... did they establish a dose-response curve? Why apple cider vinegar? Why not a dilute solution of pure acetic acid? (To determine if the effect, if any, of the vinegar was due to something besides the acetic acid.) What about other vinegars? What was the placebo drink? (Pretty hard to disguise the taste of vinegar.) What about real-time monitoring of their vital signs?

And most importantly, what was their hypothesis regarding the mechanism of action? Or were they just pretty much on "yam in the butt" plan, i.e., no idea, just thought they'd try it?

And to take it one step further, the real crime in many of these "soft" sciences, is often not the frivolous claims and biases of the researchers, but the idiocy of the practitioners who tend to take conclusions from the science as "settled," when of course the researchers said nothing close to that.
