The Morning Report - 1/10/20

bloodmoney.jpg

Good morning kids. The weekend is here and the top stories remain the President's crippling of Iran via the liquidation of its terror mastermind as well as the Democrats' self-inflicted debacle of sham-peachment. The big news out of the first item is that the President revealed that Soleimani was preparing to blow up one or more American embassies besides the one in Baghdad that was the target of an attempted assault and takeover on New Year's Day. And that is what precipitated our taking him out (and not for a meal and a movie). Meanwhile, despite their Estes-level junior rocketry display that did nothing but kick up sand in the desert, blow up on launch, and most horrendously take out a Ukrainian airliner, the medieval miscreant mullahs continue to pound their chests and declare that that display was just a warm-up. I assume that that is nothing but bluster to try and pump up their completely deflated image in the Muslim world and within their own populace after Trump's curb-stomping. And that's on top of a sanctions regime that is threatening to topple the 40-year reign of Tehran terror.

That said, we are not dealing with rational actors. The mullahs would have no reservations about using nukes and bringing about Armageddon because to them, that is an actual long term strategic foreign policy goal if they cannot achieve global Islamic subjugation and domination via force of arms or political subterfuge. Whatever their next moves may be, Victor Davis Hanson notes that none of their options are good. As for how we got here, it was 40 years of pinhead globalist naval-gazing and appeasement, with a soupcon of self- and Israel-hatred thrown in, all capped off by Barack Obama and company making that puerile, faculty lounge think tank drivel official foreign policy.

By the way, along with the missiles that landed in the desert and took out that Ukrainian airliner, Mr. Obama's insane idiocy (or was it idiotic insanity?) of appeasing Iran led directly to the deaths of Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi in 2012. Recall that all through the run up to the campaign that hoary chestnut Obama crowed, "Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive!"? So, acknowledging and attempting to prevent a confirmed plot would kind of make him look a bit foolish. The other more insidious reason was he and Clinton were using Benghazi to illegally run guns to terrorists in Syria (with the help of John McCain, the Guinness World Record holder for longest continuous funeral service). Now here's the killer-diller: guess who was the mastermind of the attack on the Benghazi compound?

Funny, as in disgusting, that of all people Susan Rice is now back on the tube doing what she was born to do, evidently; that is, lying her ass off, just like she did about that Nakoula Nakoula videotape that no one saw and yet caused the entire Middle East to erupt in anger, with Benghazi as the unlikely epicenter. Now she's furiously attempting to defend her and her boss' policies vis a vis the JCPOA nuke deal sell-out that delivered billions of dollars in both formerly frozen assets and pallets of cash right into the hands of the terrorists, including Soleimani. The other thing delivered to the Iranians was a promise that the now liquefied ex-terror mastermind would not be pursued or prosecuted for his crimes, past, present or even future.

I used to think it was all sort of accidental that the President's actions and more crucially his words in defense of his actions caused the Democrat-Media Complex to step on the metaphorical rake. Now, I think he's intentionally saying things to make them shoot themselves in the face. By correctly placing the blame for this mess on Obama as well as the previous administrations, he has caused the Left to have to both defend their actions and in doing so, expose the heretofore more or less unaware public and LIV crowd about things they effectively buried or memory-holed. Honestly, how many people before this past week were aware of what really happened in Benghazi and what it was all about? In fact, up until now, the Media poo-pooed "Benghazi" as right-wing tinfoil hat conspiracy mongering. Now, all of a sudden, Trump's actions leading up to and perhaps including the liquidation of Soleimani are officially "Trump's Benghazi." Forgetting the contradiction, most LIV people are going to say "well, what the hell was Benghazi in the first place?" Well played, Mr. President.

78 Yeah, I have seen anecdata that suggests that the lines outside some restaurants have gotten noticeably shorter.

--

Restaurants have horrible service right now. We stopped at a slightly fancier than most fast food joint and half the kitchen staff was on their phones. The lady working the drive through was leaning on the window texting someone, too.

Two days later we went to a Dennys with some church friends and the staff there was sneaking glances at their phones, too. Now, he is doing it to Joe Biden. Bombshell book being released.

_____________________

Would-be jurors in Atlanta need to announce that they will no longer vote to convict any citizens charged with crimes in connection with their actions to stop criminals in the act of committing (or fleeing from) crimes.

The powers-that-currently-be need to understand that this shit works both ways. If they're going to refuse to play their assigned roles, then we should refuse to play ours.

There's also an extra FU wrapped up in this reboot. One of the leads was portrayed by actor Mario Lopez. Lopez made the huge mistake last summer of questioning parents who identify their kids as transgender when they are 3 years old (no other hits against transgenders -- just that maybe parents should back off on the labeling when kids are young). As you can guess: it was a Hollywood scandal and he apologized, recanted, etc.

So, they hired Mario Lopez for the reboot --- and he's the parent of the transgender kid lead character, where (one assumes) he will be required to defend his kid and champion trans rights, spout trans talking points, etc.

Person says unwoke thing.Person is vilified in entertainment media, knocked by colleagues, so they apologize, say they "mispoke" or they are "learning more about the subject blah blah blah."

Is that enough? Of course not. Person's next big job offer requires them to become a spokesman for the subject of their earlier unwokeness. They'll be talking about it onscreen and in interviews about the show. Oh, and if he declines? Every media interview will then begin with the question: "Some people say you are 'phobic' because you refused to take that role . . ."

181 Morning Horde. I just finished the Witcher series on Netflix and here's my review:

I liked it. There was a lot good there, but a few pretty glaring flaws. In several different areas I found myself thinking "I see what you want me to think or feel here, but you just didn't show it well at all."

Getting the bad stuff out of the way. The show is often very confusing. Looking back from the end of season 1, it makes sense what they were trying to do with the non linear storytelling, but there had to be a better way to let the audience know what was going on than just assuming we'd pick up on it by like episode 4. The point was to show that the three main characters, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer were converging, because Destiny, but there is no reason why they couldn't have made it more clear that they're doing the jumping back and forth in time thing.

Production value was pretty good overall, but given that the audience is almost certainly already going to have seen Game of Thrones, the dragon episode specifically just looks not good.

My biggest complaint was with the character of Yennifer. She just didn't make any sense. Like at all. As mentioned earlier, I think I understand what the writers/directors were trying to go for in her character arc, but her relationships and motivations do not come across well at all. Her relationship with her mentor sorceress (whose name I still didn't catch after having watched the entire series) is completely perplexing. Is Yennifer the most talented witch? Then why did her entire training episode show her not being able to perform magic at all? Is it a mental thing where she needed to get over something so she can access her power? We don't really see any reason for why her teacher takes such an interest in her over the other mages in her "class" and later in the series their relationship is similarly strained. Her overall character arc itself felt strange too. After her transformation when she finishes her training, she's riding high and full of confidence, but the next episode, we see she's already back down low. We don't get to see any of the interesting part of that downfall. It's just assumed that we'll get it. This is jarring and makes her character feel fragmented.

With all that out of the way, I still think I enjoyed the show. Henry Cavil is a total beefcake, and plays Geralt excellently. His motivations and internal conflicts are very well portrayed (without resorting to exposition). The tension between free will and destiny is well done. Ciri is fine. She's basically a McGuffin this season, so I didn't really expect much out of her. I'm looking forward to her relationship with Geralt developing.

I didn't read the books and only played Witcher 3, so I don't have a super strong knowledge of where the story is going, but I'm interested to see what's going to happen in this series.

The problem is the socialists have essentially prevented normal urban apartment construction in SF, to "preserve" the city. So houses have been widely converted to multi-family. But the city needs lots more housing, it needs actual freedom to develop properties into larger apartment buildings. Young people can live in the East Bay and young families can move further and further south in the city, but the fact remains that SF needs new housing.

They got creative with the zoning in Denver right before we moved away. One of the things they did was remove/reduce the parking requirements for multi-unit development. Now they re building high-rise apartment buildings without bothering to also provide parking for residents - and this is in residential neighborhoods. No agenda there, right?

LOVE the Muslim boogyman,
LOVE that they kill Americans,
LOVE that they hate America,
LOVE that they were able to prevent us from doing anything

That last part is the one that horrifies them:
An America that defends herself
An America that sees their noble savage is just a savage
An America that no longer listens to them
An America that acts in her best interest

287 Coulter's scream is that we lose the country if open borders is not stopped/reversed. So she said "great, Trump discovered he can use the military to defend Iraq, but still can't stop the invasion across our own border, which kills thousands of Americans right in the homeland."

Trump is constrained by the DeepState war ... and whether Ann is correct or not in what he could/should be doing now (legally could, but maybe not politically because of terrible stateside realities of leftist penetration) to defend our borders ...

even if Trump can't act strongly here as he faces impeachment follies, Coulter still makes the good case that we do lose the country if we allow another 20 million plus to wander in for free stuff, bringing the cartels with them. (or the cartels are bringing the third world armies).

In any case, Coulter and some others are right to make noise that we lose the country if we don't stop the droning narrative of "it is racist to not import all of Central America ... and we are still losing that war, despite rejoice of "court approval" that Trump can spend $3B now, after three years.

And we still have most of the GOPe favoring open borders and "free trade" (globalism). We need more screamers upset with current SNAFUs. But changing public opinion in the face of The Narrative is no small task. Coulter did encourage Trump to do the rallies ... it reveals the broad appeal of The (counter) Message.

325 My theory on the Ukranian airliner shootdown:

The SAM crew was scared to death. They know our planes ram missiles right down the throats of SAM radars just as soon as we detect them. So when they saw a plane radar track in their area of responsibility, they fearfully assumed it was American, then switched on their automatic track and fire capability and ran for their lives. They were a hundred yards away when the missile lit off, hoping they could live through the return fire that never came.

With zero customer conversion
They went from getting paid by the viewers to paying for viewers.

I knew Facebook was doing this several years ago.
Ran for city council.
Huge amount of likes and views for ads and videos, targeted to only 4 zip codes
No increase in votes, no new voters.
This was an election where there were 1500 votes total--none of the voters who voted were people who weren't on my mailing list: Meaning zero voters were brought in by that $1k spent on FB ads.

Yes I'm sure that the snake is living down the back yard - we have a mini jungle there - palms, a huge mulberry tree, etc

373 FYFI: "After 16 years of delays and other bureaucratic hijinks, our latest booster is finally ready to fly... ONCE."

Elon's greatest accomplishment is changing our way of thinking about rockets, a true ass-kicking of the paradigm.

I saw a news story that anonymous NSC Officials were quite disgusted that President Trump kept them and their Inter-Agency Concensus completely in the dark about the Suleimani hit

I read somewhere that Lt. Col. Bearclaw is forming a Lonely Hearts Club for such broken spirited credentialists. He is promising that every meeting of the group will be treated to a "most sumptuous assortment of fine pastries and specialty teas".

375 355 "... she is a hideous liar who thinks America should bow to Iran."

No, she hoped Trump would bow like Obama did, so she could slag him like she never did Obama. It is an error to ascribe beliefs to a Democrat leader - they got where they are by not having any belief except an abiding faith in the righteousness of power.

376 I had a Conference Call at 7:30 yesterday because I wanted to get it over with and that was one of the slots. I kept getting a message from Zoom "You're meeting has not started yet" I kept checking in until 8:15. Then I gave up.

Zoom has become the enemy. I really hate it.

377 CBD, food question for you. Are you aware of a named technique where noodles are cooked properly before being put in a pan and browned to make a solid "cake" almost like hash browns?

I did it accidentally last night with some lo mein noodles. When I saw what happened to the first side I flipped the "cake" over, put some butter in, and browned the other side. And they were fantastic. Even the kids loved them.

I'd love to know if there's a name.
