Paul Krugman: Well I Just Found Out I've Been #Hacked and That Someone Who Is Not Me Is Using My IP to Download Child Pornography

Let us all say a prayer for leftwing victims of #Hacking such as Joy Reid, Paul Krugman, and, of course, Carlos Danger.

If someone were to ask me when Paul Krugman's reputation will recover, I think a good first-pass answer would be "never."

So... does everyone think the FBI will be called in to solve this mystery?

So who do you think has been downloading child porn on to Paul Krugman's computer? I figure it was probably RUSSIAN BOTS, possibly acting in coordination with QAnon, Don Trump, Jr., and Paul Krugman's right hand.

You know what a good "security company" to contact would be, Paul? The FBI.

Anthony "Carlos Danger" Weiner kept his hacking private and refused to contact the FBI about his #Hacking, and you see how badly that turned out for him.

So I'm sure Nobel Prize Winner Paul Krugman will not make this error and try to keep this a private little error between friends. I'm sure he'll contact the relevant authorities appointed to track and prosecute child pornographers.

You know who Paul Krugman blames for child pornography? Sexy, sexy children.

That's not my joke, it's some comic's. I forget who.

The Winning

Still not tired of it.

Not to spoil the fun, but your outwardly facing IP is that of your router connected to your ISP. If someone cracked his WiFi, his story is plausible.

If it is on his computer, it is most certainly implausible, unless he was hacked by Russia to benefit Trump.

Bullshit.

True - but how would he know someone did that, did the hacker hit up a honey pot site that logged the IP or something?

I would assume the hacker then would be long gone, a hit and run job... and at that point I don't know what kind of logs a home router would keep to check on that, when it happened, etc.

I would say a forensics investigation of his computer, what was deleted, history, etc would be in order regardless of his attempted explanation.

265 It is trivially easy to hack someone's computer that way. I've even seen viruses that can do it automatically and deposit whatever payload the writer wants it to leave behind. Some of them will also go through the address list in your e-mail program and send stuff out (and a copy of the virus!) "from" you to everyone in the list.
I see a strong parallel here to the practice of "swatting." Both these forms of fraud need to be many-years-in-prison level crimes, because of how badly they can destroy someone's life. But also, because both are so easy to commit, the police and courts need new rules of engagement so that they don't mindlessly inflict that destruction first and ask if it's deserved afterward.
The worse the crime of which someone is accused, the more important both due process and the presumption of innocence are. No one should be convicted of a felony for possessing child porn without a showing of intent.

For just a few thousand dollars, you can have any pornstar for a night. I assume that gets boring after a while for the perverted. So, they gotta enhance the kink.

311 Are they so jaded by coke snorting off of hooker's asses that only destroying the innocence of children gets it up for them?

Something like that, yeah. Power and boredom and a nearly complete lack of moral center.

The worse the crime of which someone is accused, the more important both due process and the presumption of innocence are. No one should be convicted of a felony for possessing child porn without a showing of intent.

And the less the person should be publicized until proven guilty.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 08, 2020 04:12 PM (KZzsI)

312 Huh. So, you're hacked, in the worst possible way -- child porn! It's the worst, because when you are accused of such a thing, a huge number of people think you're a pedophile, whether you deny the charges or not.

So when this happens to Paul Krugman, he takes a moment to publicly tell EVERYONE about it.

See, if it's me, and I'm innocent, I'm not saying anything publicly about it. Why, the only reason that I would say anything about the hacking was if, you know, I knew I was about to be indicted for child pornography and I needed to get a narrative out there. But that's me.

Paul: So sorry this happened to you, my man! You're very brave to tell us all about this very unfortunate incident. I, for one, completely believe you that you were hacked, and that you're not a hypocritical pedophile perv.

A/immorality in a consequence-free environment leads to profound perversion. This is one of many reasons no one is supposed to be above the law.

374 The biggest newspaper in Europe is Germany's Bild newspaper and, unlike every single American MSM outlet, it editorially thanked PDJT for killing Soliemani (via LegalInsurrection).

Soleimani, the world's most repelling and bloodthirsty
terrorist, who brought suffering and harm over humanity on the mullahs'
behalf, was an enemy of our civilization. He represented the unbearable
thought that murderers will live more safely and be more untouchable the
more people they kill (with the support of the state).

His violent and overdue end will not stop global terrorism, but the
image of his burnt-out car still sends out a powerful message. US
President Donald Trump has made it clear that the worst figures in the
world, however big-mouthed and ruthless they may be, cannot hide from
America's strength.

President Trump has freed the world of a monster whose aim in life
was an atomic cloud over Tel Aviv. Trump has acted in self-defense -- the

And? You get one (1) IP address.

Those are private IP addresses which are not routable outside the LAN, and are reused by anyone who happens to have that router model.

Anyone at a remote site is going to see every device in your house using the one (1) public IP address supplied by your IP.

473 So on the surface he is in deep trouble. There are caveats. One, he could actually be a victim and went public with it immediately knowing that will help his case vs being quiet and having to defend himself later if/when feds come calling.

It's also possible that authorities are already on his tail and he's already scrambling to cobble together some kind of defense.

So in terms of could his story be true, yes he could have had his computer compromised one way or another. It is also provable in that a security service could detect such a breach or virus and thus exonerate Mr. Krugman. If a hacker was targeting Krugman specifically you could seer the upside of someone trying to take down a public figure.

Again if he's a victim, then maybe this was a one-time deal he got in front of and will not lead to consequences down the line. If he's not actually a victim then there could be a long paper-trail that can get dug up that will effectively end his career and/or put him in jail.

Well, you can do forensics on the drives. But in general, it's hard to prove.

Some of the people busted for copyright violations back in the Napster days got off based on that. In general, it is not possible to prove that a specific IP address was being used by a specific person at a specific point in time. 544 Those are private IP addresses which are not routable outside the LAN, and are reused by anyone who happens to have that router model.

Yeah, that's how ours works. Each of us has a slightly different IP but one goes into and out of the router. Which brings up an interesting legal problem: how do you prove which computer was used for this and who was using that specific computer at the time?

I think the packets contain info on where in the subnet the packet originated from.
Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 08, 2020 04:31 PM (Ct55T)

Yes, because when a response comes back to that packet, it needs to be able to get back to the computer that it came from. To do that it needs the ultimate local address of the computer.

547 In terms of spoofing, you can spoof IP's but I think that would be done outside of Krugman's computer. If you figured out someone's IP then you could arrange a scenario I suppose where you make requests to nefarious sites with their IP in order to set them up. I think Krugman's defense wouldn't be spoofing per se but rather a situation where his computer is compromised to hit nefarious sites and thus access and download content to his machine to frame him or just cause chaos. At any rate, there's always a paper trail that can be dug up along with analysis of the box to incriminate or exonerate his claims.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 08, 2020 04:29 PM (KZzsI)

Router goes through the process of embedding the local IPs into packets it sends out externally, then the responses are read and local IPs embedded into the kiddie porn packets are read back out, so that the router knows which device made the request.

It is called Network Address Translation.

That is why I said, hacked WiFi (e.g., router), maybe. Hacked his device and downloaded kiddie porn? Increasingly improbable.

+++++++++++
Not once it leaves your network (on your side of the router) and hits the internet (on the telco/cable-company side of the router). It's up to your router to figure out which packets go where in your network - that's its job. To the internet, all that traffic comes from address "A" and unless something is snooping around inside, it's hard to know the true device origin.

That's for raw traffic analysis. Things like websites, however, get all kinds of information from your browser including unique IDs, cookies, etc. They may not know your internal IP address, but they know what device you're on because the browser gives lots of delightful information. And any number of consumer devices (particularly Smart TVs - the terms of service on those will make your toes curl, to the point that I set up a separate network for them so they can only snoop on each other) love to monitor everything they can and report back home about what devices you have, how they're used, etc.

It's all imperfect and no one has access to all of the data (that I know of), but identification of your devices within your network is often manageable even when using a shared public IP address (which is the norm), depending on what you do, what software you use, etc.

True enough, but not relevant.

At any given time, every device on your LAN will appear to have the same IP address to the outside world. That's the point here.

WaMu sent me an enticing offer with a rebate. I applied. They approved. They approved me for a credit card with a $12,500 credit line in 2007. At that time, I was a marginally-employed student with a mountain of student loans about to come due and basically no income.

I saw it and laughed and immediately thought, "what the hell is wrong with these people?"

I used to bank at Wells. They kept pimping credit at me. I kept asking them to stop. They kept not stopping. One day it was the final straw and I just withdrew my balance in cash and walked down to a reputable credit union.

Never looked back. I have banked with several CUs and certainly not all are good - some behave a lot like big banks - but in general I have been very satisfied.

Tip: Walk in to the credit union. If it looks and feels like a big bank, they're gonna treat you like a big bank.

636 What CAN happen to people if their personal routers are not secure is that someone wardrivng by can see an unsecured router or one with default password set and log into your network. If you have your computer trusting any device on that network then someone could be on there sharing files with your personal computer. Typically they would make those hidden files and unless you knew to look for them you wouldn't know they were there.

If he actually HAS a security team and this happened he should sue them for every penny they own.

Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at January 08, 2020 04:48 PM (sy5kK)

647 > That's how I understand it. The outside world doesn't need to know which computer to send it to, the router does that. Nor does the outside world need to know which computer sent anything, the router does that.

Your understanding is correct.

Internet communication happens between port numbers on IP addresses.

When you go to ace.mu.nu, your machine connects to port 80 on ace.mu.nu's IP address (via your router) and says "send me moron stuff on port (whatever) at IP address (whatever)".

Your router remembers what machine requested what, and when data comes in for port (whatever), it knows which machine to send it to.

The internal IP address is not sent over the net.

NAT is actually pretty clever. If anyone really wants to understand it, RFC 1631 is your friend.

Shouldn't the story read Paul Krugmans claims, without evidence, that his computer was hacked and child porn downloaded?

Posted by: Dr Spank at January 08, 2020 04:44 PM (4e+hS)

No this is much different. This is someone who obviously knows nothing about computers or networking claiming his "IP address was hacked". I'll wager he never heard the phrase "IP address until earlier today when he found out he was under investigation because child porn had been downloaded from his IP address.
Internet-facing IP addresses can't get "hacked" by the way.

700 I noticed this when I hooked up a new wireless printer. I clicked on the "I accept" button and I didn't even have to enter the wifi password, it automatically joined my password protected network without any input from me.

I still don't know how it did that.

Wife asked me why I was wearing a gun in the house.

I told her, "Decepticons".

She laughed.
I laughed.
The toaster laughed.
I shot the toaster.
Good times. Good times.

702 Funny how back in 2016 I thought Pizzagate was far-fetched Coast To Coast AM stuff. Then Epstein got throttled in his cell, and suddenly the idea of a sociopolitical elite acting like they're in a production of "I, Claudius" seems like hard fact.

704 I have now spent the past three hours reviewing in great detail, and at great length, every single abhorrent file that these hackers downloaded while using my IP address.

These are some very disturbing people.

And I need to rehydrate.

707 647 The internal IP address is not sent over the net.

This is *not* true for IPv6. Krugman might be in an area where this is an option.

657 Not really. People writing those are sadists.

This is 100% true.

709 NBC News Tomorrow: "Paul Krugman is a serious and deep religious and currency scholar whose is a heroic life force to the young toddlers he mentored. He will be missed by the kindergarten class of Miss Wallingfords' while doing his 5-10 at the max security Pen in Danbury, CT."

Now that there is funny.

717 ISP's will log the router's mac address that has the IP assigned to it at any particular point in time. Also log the mac address of device used. So there's that.

727 I believe Krugman. He was not the guy who put the child porn on his computer.
Of course he still needs to explain why he had a starring roll in the Epstein's child porn videos found on his computer.

728 Your IP address is not your identity that anyone can simply appropriate and receive your traffic as if they were you. It is how the Internet knows how to route packets to YOUR home router via thousands of other routers between you and the source. Those kiddie porn packets still went to Krugman in some way or they are going into some router's bit bucket. And why is he special to supposedly be warned about this when others just get a knock on their door by the cops to take them away?
