Margot Cleveland: The IG Missed Another Lie by Steele in the "Dossier"

And the FBI also told the same lie in their four FISA applications.

Left-leaning politicians and the press spent more than three years pushing the Russia collusion hoax. Yet, following the inspector general’s release of his 478-page report on Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) abuse, after making quick mention of the top-line findings, the media moved on. As a result, much has been missed, including one significant misrepresentation contained in all four of the Carter Page FISA applications--an inaccuracy even the IG’s team overlooked.

Two passages, separated by more than 50 pages, when read together reveal an eighth significant inaccuracy and omission from the first FISA application, and one repeated in the later three renewals: Steele's sources and sub-sources were not ones he used or developed during his time with the British intelligence service MI6, contrary to the impression created in the FISA applications.

This detail was dropped in a footnote in the IG report, following this text: "Steele told us he had a source network in place with a proven 'track record' that could deliver on Fusion GPS’s requirements. Steele added that this source network previously had furnished intelligence on Russian interference in European affairs."

The relevant footnote, footnote 214, then read: "Steele told us that this source network did not involve sources from his time as a [redacted] and was developed entirely in the period after he retired from government service." The redacted language undoubtedly referred to Steele's British intelligence work.

So Steele represented first that his super-sources were ones he had developed while at the MI-6, and would presumably have been vetted by MI-6 -- adding a veneer of credibility.

And the FBI and DOJ represented to the FISA court that these sources had been developed while Steele was at MI-6.

But now it turns out Steele lied, he had developed these bullshit sources as a private freelancer working for Russian oligarchs, and the DOJ and FBI lied along with him, and the Inspector General apparently wants to bury it.

Related: Andrew McCabe admitted that he lied about leaking to investigators -- and hence committed the crime of obstruction of justice.

He admitted it.

Where is the prosecution?

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe admitted he misled investigators about his role in a media leak and apologized for it, according to transcripts of his interviews with investigators released Thursday.

The transcripts were released by the Justice Department’s inspector general in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

An unidentified FBI investigator detailed his frustration with Mr. McCabe over the time he spent investigating the leak, only to discover the leak came from the former deputy director himself, according to the transcripts. Mr. McCabe had repeatedly denied he was the source of the leak, but later confessed and apologized when the investigator confronted him, the transcripts said.

So he admitted it when they showed that they had records proving he lied.

Only then did he admit it and apologize.

What a stand-up guy.

I can't wait until I'm called for federal jury duty and I get to believe what all these truth-telling straight-arrows lie to me about from the witness stand.

This doesn't go too far enough.

Dismantle the DoJ. And all of the intelligence agencies except DIA (just purge the DIA leadership). Remake the whole damn thing as three new agencies and the one remaining one:
1) Law enforcement.
2) Foreign intelligence
3) Military intelligence
4) Domestic intelligence

No one who has ever been in management at any former agency are allowed in. Field workers and analysts may reapply to the new agencies, with no guarantees and no preferential treatment.

In addition, Trump should lobby congress to repeal FISA, and order his heads to stand down on any use of FISA for the remainder of his administration.

Wait for them to deal with impeachment first. Then, during the summer break, he should do exactly that. This game the Senate has started playing of *never* doing into recess is bullshit. Wait for their summer break, then forcibly recess them and flood the system with your recess appointees.

This would be a very popular move, it would move the ball downfield BIGLY in time for the election, and the turtle will blink because he'd be looking at yet another thing that will contribute to hard-fought success in a very difficult election year for the Republican Senate. He'll bitch and moan privately and maybe issue a statement, but it will go no further. The press will scream and shriek about abuse of power, which will just amp up Trump's base and make fence-sitters realize that one of the reasons for slow progress over the first term has been Senatorial obstruction by refusing the recess.

Me: "Ah, but this moon-info did not originate with me -- I got it from a source."

(Awkward pause.)

Don't laugh.

If they do this, a Federal Judge will declare it binding. Then, Trump will have to go begging to the Supreme Court - establishing yet again that the Judiciary outranks the Executive. For bonus points, John Roberts is going to stick the knife in Trump on one of these things, sooner or later.

Federal Courts have already blocked Trump from exercising country-specific immigration bans - a power that had been implemented by previous presidents. Federal Courts have already blocked Trump from repealing certain Executive Orders.

Do not confuse the literal wording of the rules with the implementation of the rules. The rules, as implemented over the last three years - are that any Federal Court Judge can stop any Presidential action dead in it's tracks - pending a ruling by the Supreme Court.

This is no laughing matter, and frankly I'm surprised the House didn't seize on it sooner. If Trump won't simply ignore a Federal Judge, then the obvious play is to take every single action Trump undertakes to a Federal Judge.

Their performance will be even more jaw-dropping if any vote comes close to any Iranian "retaliation"* attempt.

* for those born yesterday, and/or at an NPR level of understanding, Iran has been at war - a shooting war - with us for FORTY YEARs, and has been attacking our assets in the region for months, including a recent wave of hits on our and combined bases in Iraq ..... so "retaliation" has long lost its conventional meaning here

It gets you 80% there.

The remaining 20% can be eroded by aggressively punishing other people for minor or even non-crimes, and generally taking a *very* hard line with ordinary citizens.

You know, like locking up Manafort for nothing, ruining Flynn's life for nothing, raiding Stone for nothing for the first case.

And sentencing people to multiple years in prison for burning a gay pride flag, aggressively going after traffic violators, doing nothing about home invasions and robberies, etc. in the latter.

I'll start believing that the law means something beyond "I get fucked and you get away with it" when it starts meaning something other than that.

115 If anyone missed WierdDave's mini-splainer on minimum loss ratio (MLR) and effect on obamacare's premiums and prices in last night's ONT, you need to go back and find and read it.

It, IMO, is one of the clearest examples of government intervention inverting market forces to completely and destructively upend a market.

It is worthy of a post in its own right.

TLR:

MLR changed the profit/loss motive of the insurers from one of shrewd risk assessment and minimization of costs, to one of no loss and maximum profit by maximizing numbers of policies written and maximizing payouts to providers. End result, exploding prices with no natural downward price pressure.

I now understand how the world exploded with Obamacare Navigators on every corner all of a sudden. There was a profit motive for the insurance companies to sign up as many people as possible, and thus, the market for obamacare navigators was born.

I imagine that is why the insurance companies were so gung ho. I wonder if our legislators knew and understood this. As Pelosi said, pass it to find out what is in it.

Posted by: TexasDan at January 03, 2020 12:49 PM (yL25O)

Serious answer - starting about 2012 with apparently valid accusations of corruption, Ahmadinejad fell from grace with the Iranian regime. He then compounded his disgrace by publicly criticizing the leaders and the regime which ousted him, and after that the Iranian leadership, and all of their western supporters, have worked to erase his name from every account and to eliminate his memory completely - much like Uncle Joe Stalin would do to any former comrade who ran afoul of him.

I think it shows who the NYT has been taking orders from for a long time now.

Federal Judges have successfully over-ruled Trump on matters as trivial as who may get a press pass to as large as who may cancel an Executive Order and set immigration policy - all matters which were decided by the President, right up until a Federal Judge decided they no longer were, because there are different unwritten rules for Trump.

If the Dems choose to take the resolution to a Federal Judge - that Judge will deem it binding. Then Trump will find himself in the same old situation he always finds himself in - obey a Federal Judge or refuse. So far, Trump has always chosen to obey.

The rules as written are not the same as the game as it's currently being played. Laugh all you want. It won't change a thing.

Asking for prayers for my friend Ward and his wife. He is a retired Australian Naval officer with a house and mini-ranch near Batemans Bay, Australia. Last night the fires finally surrounded his property and swept through. He was as prepared as he could be and had pumps and water running to save the house and about 1/2 acre surrounding it. The rest of nearly 30 acres is now "a lunar landscape."
Power and internet are sporadic, but he has generators, gas, food. His neighbors, not so much.
A lesson in preparation.

____________

Sure, it's called a "no bill," and means the grand jury refused to indict.
----------
Yeah, you don't get to hear that option a lot these days.
1. Prosecutors try to force a plea deal for a conviction before a grand jury can hear a case.
2. Democrat politicians hate any form of grand jury nullification.
3. Forensic detective TV shows make physical evidence incontrovertible, and skip over the messy and annoying part of then using all that evidence as PART of the State's/Nation's case against the suspect in a grand jury setting. And then the letdown when the jury says "That's good work, but what does it have to do with indicting THIS guy on THIS charge under THIS law? No bill."

You're a successful actress, "Tehran" Rose. You could pay the vig to emigrate to Canada. They'd let you in.

But you don't. You'd rather sit at home in your fancy house and vice-signal to the world about how accommodating you'll be to any enemy who may take over.

Do you really think that everyone - nay, *anyone* - else is like us? That anyone else will put up with your shit instead of disappearing you after dispossessing you of your wealth? Do you really think that 7th-century theocrats are interested in the opinions of a washed-up, middle-aged, past-her-prime American actress? Moreover, do you really think most people in *this* country care?

If so, I wonder what her stance on Obama doing nothing, letting Americans die, then destabilizing and starting a war with Libya was.

War may be inevitable. I don't know, because my crystal ball is in the shop. But responding to acts of war is not illegal. And this is (so far, at least), treating an enemy (Iran) much more moderately than Obama treated a neutral party (Libya).

It was nuts to say the Dems would go for impeachment the day after Trump won - right up until they did. It was insane to say the Republican Establishment would work against him - until they did. And the House would never be crazy enough to vote on impeachment.

243 June 1942

We condemn in the strongest terms possible the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. While Heydrich may not have been an enlightened being, he still possessed the spark of the divine and did not deserve to be ambushed on his way to work and shot down in the street like a rabid dog. In these trying times, we must rise above primitive emotion and extend our hand in forgiveness and friendship. An eye for an eye, a Jewish expression, just leaves all of us blind. In sorrow, but in hope for a better day, we apologize for the cruel and unwarranted actions of our criminal government.

outside of all of the fun we can have with John Norman's worlds, our ancestors here in America recognized that entire peoples have always preferred Slavery to Freedom, which is why a nation of Free Men is such a radical concept. Why is Maduro still running Venezuela? Bottom line is because Venezuelans prefer the certainty of a nasty life of slavery to the risky uncertainty of rising up as free men. Same reason Russian put up with eternally coercive governments, and the Chinese. Those peoples were born to be slaves, and slaves they will always remain. Funny - I was talking about something similar with my wife and boy on New Year's Day.

Until I started working outside the US, I never understood just how different parts of America are. No where else in the world, at least the parts I've been, is there ever the simple expectation of being left alone. Everywhere else, the spectre of what government will do hovers over everyone.

In the last decade, that same feeling has really started to come to the forefront of urban life inside the US as well. To my boy, politics is just something you see on TV. He's never lived a day in his life where he really had to give a damn. He's never lived a day, or spent a day watching anyone else, live less than free.

307 here in America recognized that entire peoples have always preferred Slavery to Freedom, which is why a nation of Free Men is such a radical concept. "Politics" in nations such as that is nothing more than polite negotiation about the length of their chains.

I know a guy that is a die hard lib. Smart and capable at the day job. Just crazy on politics.

Maybe it would help if modern feminism hadn't rebranded so many bad choices a "empowering!"? They follow the feminist rules and yet they are unhappy. Worse, they see people who didn't go down that path and a lot of them are happy and that pisses them off even more (see: Palin, Sarah). 402 To be sure, Iran's theocratic hostility to America, and de facto state of war against us, goes back 40 years, but Iran's provocations of the last year--attacking shipping in the Persian Gulf, attacking a major Saudi oil field, shooting down an American drone--should be understood as acts intended to draw armed response from the U.S., and thereby weaken Trump's political base here at home. Think of these escalations as the Iranian equivalent of the Viet Cong's Tet Offensive in 1968, which finished off Lyndon Johnson's prospects for re-election. In other words, Iran's grand strategy right now amounts to an attempt at election interference. Russia must be envious.

427 Hard to imagine what Iran does next.

1) Nothing. Probably the safest thing. You poke the bear, the bear claws you, stop poking the bear.

2) Some sort of retaliatory B.S. Try to invade the embassy again. A bombing. Attack a ship. Problem is Trump has shown he will punch back much harder. Assume you attack a U.S. warship and kill a few sailors. You are likely to lose a nuclear reactor or refinery in retaliation.

3) Escalate - worldwide attack using everything you got. You might do some damage - even kill a few thousand Americans. Thing is, it would be game over. America could wipe out your country economically and militarily. No, we wouldn't invade - we'd just destroy every power station, every warship, every plane, every refinery, every missile, in your country. You'd be set back generations in a month.

Waffen-SS were specifically banned from enlisting in the Legion. But they needed bodies to deal with Ho and the Viet Minh.

430 I do think Trump's response was pretty amazing.

Look, assume the Iranians are trying to provoke the U.S. ahead of the elections, to make Trump look bad. Their calculation may have been, well, he'll attack a refinery, or a warship, and who knows, maybe we down his plane, or some school children get killed and we can play that up.

Trump said, no brah, I'm going to kill YOU. YOU personally. You shitheads that are orchestrating this nonsense. That is who he went after. He didn't have a lethal response to the "protesters" that stormed the embassy. They were just Iranian cannon fodder. He killed the organizer and leader of the whole thing.

Iranian leader no doubt could care less if some of their people get killed. but if they themselves end up dead? Top leaders who planned and executed this shit lord stuff? That is a reason to think twice.
