The Occasional Fishing, Hunting, Rugged Outdoors Thread, Camping Edition [Bandersnatch]

Welcome Piscators and Piscatrixes, Nimrods and Nimrettes, and Rough Riders of all genders to the current installment of the occasional fishing and hunting and other wholesome outdoorsness thread, Camping Edition.

281219-01.jpg

Let’s start with some rules for camping. I learned a lot from the Mad Croatian, and one of the things he insisted on was that the first thing you do at camp is put up the overhead tarp. I did that in this picture and that was good because a gentle rain set in and the tarp protected the fire without getting all the smoke in our faces.

Note the ridiculous contraption on the right. It’s a tent cot. If there were real rules to camping I would ban it. I told Jon that a real tent only takes 10 or 15 minutes to put up and he said that’s 10 minutes he could be doing something more fun.

Now, what you bring and how you do things depends on what kind of camping you’re doing. There’s backpack camping, where you want everything as light and compact as possible. Canoe camping offers more room for stuff, but if you’re going multi-day what you have with you is finite so you have to pack thoughtfully. Car camping – that’s where you drive to the campground and don’t have to carry stuff far, not sleeping in your car like a damn hippie – affords more room for luxury and comfy things. For the purposes of this post I’m not considering sleeping in a camper to be camping.

281219-02.jpg

This is the two little Banderlings on a canoe camping trip about twenty years ago. As you can see, a canoe offers enough storage to bring Moosie and Bearie. (Ah, kids. They’ve grown up to be utter disappointments).

Yes, this post is a little bit autobiographical because the point of the outdoors threads is Story Time. I tell some stories here, you tell some stories in the grey boxes.

Here’s a story. This is the Old Man of the Mountain.

281219-03.jpg

It’s in New Hampshire, and being that my father was from New Hampshire I considered it part of my heritage. Well, I did canoe camping trips with the Mad Croatian and his family for several years and the very first year we did it exhausted the children. They’d had sunburn and poison ivy and leech bites and a week of living outdoors, so when they were packed into the car for the ride home they fell deeply asleep.

We drove past the Old Man. I wanted to wake them and show it to them but they were so tired I thought, “that thing has been there for 12,000 years, I can show it to them next year”. That Winter the Old Man buckled and his face fell off the mountain. Oh well.

Now here’s a thing I would have considered cheating as a youngster, but darn they’re comfortable. If I’m car camping I am not shy about bringing an air mattress. I would rather sleep in a quiet place in a tent on an air mattress than in the best hotel there is. Also, if you bring a foot pump you can inflate your pie:

281219-04.jpg

If you are buying a tent online, which is to say if you’re not standing in front of it when making the purchase, be aware that tent marketers are insane. They designate a tent as “two man” for people who are comfortable enough with each other to sleep head to foot, like sardines, and not roll over in their sleep. This says “2” right on it, but it’s a one man tent in real life:

281219-05.jpg

Camp cooking is another thing that depends on the style of camping you’re doing and how much bulk you can carry. Some people, even when they have room in the canoe and options, insist on dehydrated camp food that prepares in a jiffy. I will go camping just as an excuse to make my favorite camp breakfast.

281219-06.jpg

That’s potatoes, onions, and herbs, fried with cut-up bacon mixed in, and eggs.

If you camp in a pure Northern clime like New England you can pick blueberries while the kids are sleeping. I don’t know if people camp in the South.

281219-07.jpg

Camping can be a serene solo experience where you contemplate life with only a fire, a bourbon, and your thoughts.

281219-08.jpg

Or you can bring a friend.

281219-09.JPG

And with that we move on to the raison d’etre of this here HQ, the comments section. Brickbats, praise, and fish brag pics are welcome at aoshqfish at sign gmail thing. I have a couple of fish pics in the inbox, they’ll go up the next time I actually talk about fishing.

Tonight’s outdoors thread is brought to you by Sears.

3 You would never know it by looking at the landscape around my house, but America's second biggest canyon is a short drive from here.

There are two state parks in that canyon system. One is Palo Duro, which is great, don't get me wrong, but I'd recommend its red-headed stepchild: Caprock Canyons, which is not far away.

I spent two nights there earlier this year camped out alone at a primitive campground, and by primitive, they mean it. There's just a simple outhouse out there, and that is all. I had the place to myself. I camped out in a backpacking tent which claims can hold two, but in fact was just big enough for me (which was fine). Best of all was that you could literally hear the silence out there, except at night, when the coyotes came out and made a nuisance of themselves.

That's really neat to do, you ask, but what is there to do out there? Hike, which I did a lot of. I took apart the north side of the park and that time of year there were few people, and less critters (like rattlesnakes) to contend with. It was a good 48 hours to unplug fully from civilization.

In fact I did quite a bit of hiking in the TX state parks this past year. Good times.

10 Tent camping is fun. As a kid we had this old army tent my parents bought at a surplus store. It was heavy as heck but when we were younger it fit 4 or 5 of us nicely. Never seemed to fail that when we went camping it either rained when we were putting that tent up, or taking it down.

Only uninformed Yankee interlopers camp in the South.

The skeeters will pick you up and carry you clear to Mexico.

Camping in a parking lot while waiting for the Likker store to open is different, and a fine way to make new friends.

16 I'm more of a 'car camper' nowadays.

10 x 14 tent. Queen size air mattress. Sheets and blankets.

Used to do a lot of 'camp' type sword fighting events, and got used to my comfort.

But at least I'm not as bad as my Brother, who has the 32 Ft. long 5th wheel trailer.

17 Of course we camp in the south, CBD. Mrs. E and I have camped on lots of rivers while whitewater kayaking or solo canoing. We camped out of Mr. BigTruck or our van The Family Truckster. We canoe-camped for 5 days at a time on the Sabine. We cooked turkey and dressing with all the trimmings in dutch ovens when we were caving in Arkansas, and did the same meal in a damn hurricane in Pensacola. Good times they were tenting it. Now we have 2 campers cause we are old and stiff.

36 Overhead tarp is a must. Which generally means you'll need lots of rope , surveyors twine and zip ties. We screw eye bolts into stout tree trunks and run one thick rope as a tarp header - also serves as a place to hang food and ice chests if bear are about. Bear get into everyting. They'll test bite anything in a camp including plastic gas containers.

Spook curious bears by smearing peanut butter on aerosol cans of non stick pan oil like Pam. They bite it, get scared and run away

my guy won't be in until Monday, and i'd really like to bust up some more firewood.

thoughts?

84 Catch Thirty-Thr33 ...

i been all over the paloduro and it has its charm and great hiking and camping.
I went to tech.

if you are up to it, at the Guadalupe National Park sw of Lubbock its possible to hike up and down four of five of the highest peaks in Texas in one long day. Ok ,8750 ft is nothin like what other western states have but its a 16 or more hour hike w lots of up and down.

Then Big Bend is magnificent in its own way.
Primitive camping there means if you go #2 you first dig a hole deep enough say 8 inches min. Do your thing then bury well. No outhouse there.

El Capitan! I drove from San Diego to El Capitan to surf. I got there late so I slept in the car. Early in the evening after the sun was down and it was dark, they launched a rocket from Vandenburg. While it was dark at ground level, when the rocket got high enough to get into the sun its exhaust trail lit up against the black sky, very very cool.

The next morning the waves were 10 feet and wrapping around the point. It was the best day of surfing I had in my life. There's a soft place in my heart for El Capitan.

I'm in Order of the Arrow, Scouting's "honor society", where I usually serve as a guide for new members during our quarterly camping weekends. The rule for us -- the new members and me -- is to sleep in a bag under the stars on nothing more than a tarp. I could go into a tent for the second night, but I almost always don't so I can see the stars, moon and sky for a second evening running. Best camping experiences of the year, easily.

Oh Weasel, one week in the White Mountains in January cured me of that.

That and having to drive from the western side of the Adirondak Park to the remotest part of the eastern side to "rescue" college roommates who were attempting to spend the whole month of January in the High Peaks Region.

Damn fool fell into a creek and soaked his pack. Damn lucky they were near the Adirondak Loj.

Of course they were the ones who talked me into the week in New Hampshire...who's the bigger fool hmmm..

173 God, I miss camping.... when the kids were young,Id call home before I left the airbase, and the old missle casket would be outside, prepacked, and ready to go with tent, bags, cooking kit, etc.. A stop at the store for beer, steaks and ice, and 45 minutes later we were in National forest in the Santa Rita mountains south of Tucson. Pitch the tent, grab the .22, and go hike and shoot. Kids grown, one is disabled,no grandkids, and the wife refuses to sleep in a tent anymore. Guess I will have to do some solo backpacking when it warms up, and if I can get a damm day off........

A traditional tent is only really a sorta-OK option if you're backpacking it in, and honestly for backpacking I'd rather carry an ultra light hammock tent or a sil-nylon tarp/poncho and a bivy cover, depending on the weather.

Regular synthetic dome tents just aren't really good at any one particular thing compared to alternatives. Most of them are really just chinesium with half-ass designs.

If you're driving there - whether "car camping" or driving off road into the middle of nowhere, tents intended for use from vehicles are the way to go. The Australians really have this down with their "swags", with fast setup, built-in mattress pads, and treated canvas construction that's more durable and ember-resistant. They usually weight 25-30 lbs, but that doesn't matter when it's riding in the bed of your truck or on the roof rack.

I have slept in just about everything temporary there is to sleep in - all kinds of tents, bivys, hammocks, lean tos, holes in the ground, etc, and I haven't owned a traditional dome tent in a decade and probably will never buy another.

Washington State is a fantastic place to live if you like the outdoors. Camping since a little kid.

Western Washington is nothing like Central or Eastern Washington, all are distinctly different climates and camping experiences. Western WA is well, Seattle drizzle wet that supports thick underbrush and trees (unless of course, it is a planned 3 day weekend, then it rains like hell about half the time).

Central WA is super dry, less than 10 inches of rain a year, and sagebrush, until the wine grape farmers tore much of it out to grow grapes, watered by massive pumping of Columbia River water into the desert growing area.

Eastern WA has pines and light underbrush, and is more like the midwest, weatherwise. Moderate mountains / woods in the north, and rolling hills (the Palouse - the wheat fields are mesmerizing).

Our family grew up boating in Puget Sound / San Juan Islands / Southern British Columbia. Combine the skills of mastering a marine environment with the enjoyment of camping. It's great. I learned camping skills when we anchored and rowed ashore, or moored at a dock of a marine state park, as well as salt water boating knowledge (tides, currents, wind in one direction, rollers coming from another direction, reading Coast Guard charts, how to anchor properly, lots of stuff). I read Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship cover to cover as a 12-13 year old.

The gift that God gave us when He created Washington state is one of the primary reasons I put up with the Leftist/Communist nonsense so prevalent in the Seattle area.

Another moron last summer asked about taking a cruise ship up the Columbia River. I knew some folks from Wisconsin that took the trip a few years ago, and they loved it. It covers all 3 climates in less than a week, while you enjoy the incredible scenery of the Columbia.

And you go right through the PacNW wine country.

I guess I got off track there, sorry about that.

214 We liked to bring the queen size air mattress and sheets to put inside the double sleeping bag, because we were over 50 and there's no need to suffer while camping. The tent was big enough to allow a narrow space on one side. Tim used that to store his gas can (night pee can).

I had a battery operated lamp, because I like to read late into the night, while listening to the critters try to raid the pantry in the shelter.
At least 2 coolers - I used to freeze blocks of ice the week before, so they'd last through the weekend.
The art of camping is to bring what you'll use, and no more. Knives, a machete, a hammer, an ax. Fishing stuff, including the minnow trap. The canoe, and folding chairs and tables.
Tim had this down to a science. I still have his camping index cards somewhere. {{{Timmy}}}
Most importantly, as little electronics as possible. No phones or tunes. You're surrounded by birdsong, why would you want to ruin it with music?

Moose. Out the "back gate" of Rocky Mountain you end up on a lovely high and dry plateau, with great fishing streams around the margins. Greatest moose-herd watching sites in the whole country. Not a lot of "inns," but lots of open-country campsites (not in the woods either). Having seen what moose can see of where they are standing and walking, I drove an extra hour or two into Wyoming to stay at a hunting lodge. If I'm going to get stomped by a small dinosaur, I want it to be on purpose.

265 if you are up to it, at the Guadalupe National Park sw of Lubbock its possible to hike up and down four of five of the highest peaks in Texas in one long day.

You can, at the Caprock Canyons State Park in TX. They maintain a bison herd there.

On the aforementioned hiking trip, I encountered a bison right on the trail, and I gave that bad boy plenty of room as I proceeded on that trail. They are bigger than me, you see.

Good to see the Scouts representing here. I was in Scouts in CO and that made for outstanding camping trips. When I left Boy Scouts (not by design really: one of the problems of being an Army Brat are the constant moves and Scouts fell by the wayside as I could not locate anyone who was into it) all I needed to get Star was my four months time requirement. I wasn't even 13. Still, it was good times.

Hence my putting together a bit of hiking gear for use on trails here, there and everywhere.

Water is also a consideration for Caprock Canyons. (I carried a 2.5 gal jug of water with me and had some large bottles of water for the hikes.) Where I was going there weren't exactly wells and water fountains, and this is west TX/the Panhandle, which, while things grow there, is still semi-arid.

And, because I am crazy (my friends and family love to say so), I want to hike the Appalachian Trail. The whole bloody thing. One day.

(I got a book on Big Bend at home and a trail map. I'm gonna pull it off at some point. Maybe 2020 is the year. Another factor: even where I am in TX, it is STILL a seven hour drive. Big Bend is a long way from anywhere. Which I think makes it worth it.)

So the helmet to helmet hit yes can be dangerous. The penalty and the way it is implemented is what I consider bullshit. Because things that are unintentional and completely out of control of the defensive player will draw the penalty, like him trying to turn and lower his head to make the tackle and avoid a helmet to helmet only to have the offensive player turn and cause it anyways.

16-7 with 2 minutes left in the first half, it is still a game.

Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at December 28, 2019 09:58 PM (sy5kK)

399 Don't launch yourself with your head down. Its eyes up looking at your target. Targeting is called for the safety of defenseless players on offense and for the safety of defensive players so they don't break their necks trying to lead with the crown of their helmet. Coaches know how to form tackle. Using the helmet as a weapon to cause harm needs to be inforced. Players are crazy strong, fast, huge.

t. Slot Wr in high school in the Dirty South when targeting wasn't called in late 90's. Averaged 3-4 major concussions a year.
