Make Gas Cans Great Again & Lock Up the "Snow Blower Vote" [BUCK THROCKMORTON]

If Donald Trump wants to ensure he recaptures the 2020 electoral votes in the Great Lakes states he won in 2016 - and possibly add Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Maine - there is one simple thing he could do that would make him a hero to every snow-blowing American - issue an executive order to restore functioning gas cans.

To be clear, this would also make him a hero to tens of millions of other Americans throughout the country who use lawn mowers, power tools, etc around their homes or in their jobs. In 2009 the EPA banned the sale of gas cans that functionally pour gas. To be specific, the scientifically illiterate bureaucrats at the EPA outlawed gas cans with vents, mandating that all new gas cans must have crazy contraptions that require three hands to operate. Unlike the old gas cans, the new ones spill gas all over the user and onto the ground. The result of the EPA’s incompetence is a new gas can that is much worse for the environment than the one it replaced. The incompetent regulators at the EPA are so scientifically illiterate that they honestly believed that the vents on gas cans were there to allow gas fumes to escape, rather than the actual purpose of allowing air to flow in to the can so that gas can be poured out. Having received their “science” education in Oppression Studies classes at Grievance State University, these morons making rules for how we gas up our power tools have likely never handled a tool more powerful than their own personal groomers.

The government-mandated non-functioning gas can may be the most unpopular government-imposed regulatory rule since the 55 mile per hour speed limit. If you don’t know someone who mocks and despises these stupid red canisters, then you are living a very sheltered urban or upscale lifestyle. Most all working-class and middle-class Americans deal with these awful containers, and they mock the government for imposing them on us. Even James Lileks, the gentle Minneapolis newspaper columnist who also writes for National Review, had this to say recently on his daily blog about his efforts to gas up his new snow blower:

This was not as easy as it sounds, since the gas can had a special safety nozzle that prevented gas from escaping under any circumstances, including the time when you wanted to pour it out. Push in the green tab to unlock, press with your palm! Nothing. Did it again: nothing. Did it again: somehow gas came out of the part where I was pressing, not the nozzle. Augh. Go inside, clean it off, try to get the damned SAFETY ENHANCED CAN to release a few drops. Nothing. In the process the smell of gas filled the garage and the tunnel, and when my wife came home she was overcome by fumes.

While not an obnoxious #NeverTrump writer like much of the National Review staff, Mr. Lileks has been politely #NotTrump. Perhaps liberating him, and millions of other snow blowing Americans, from the tyranny of the government-designed gas can would be persuasive come November 2020.

Even if you put politics aside, and out of compassion for his fellow Americans, Mr. Trump just needs to issue an executive order to end this gas can idiocy. His recent comments mocking government toilet regulations indicate that he has an ear for the impact of idiotic government regulations. Congress never passed a law which outlawed the old gas cans. Instead, these abhorrent new gas cans were simply foisted on us by zealous government imbeciles who have never mowed a blade of grass or poured a drop of gas out of a gas can. With one stroke of his pen President Trump can fix this mess. One more thing - after restoring functioning gas cans, President Trump should assemble the EPA team and ask every executive and manager in the EPA if they personally support the current non-functioning gas cans. Any EPA employee who replies in the affirmative should be terminated on the spot - with insults, derision, and mockery. Someone please forward this article to President Trump.

Are they red? Apparently the EPA has dictated what colors for what fuels you put into your can.

Red containers are intended for gasoline and other highly flammable liquids.

Blue containers are used for storing kerosene.

Yellow containers are used for diesel fuel.

Green containers typically are designed for storing oil.

Posted by: olddog in mo, uckfay ancercay at December 25, 2019 02:11 PM (Dhht7)

41 Found a replacement spout on Amazon. Link to follow. Check out the highest rated review!

A couple of years back, I bought a great little diesel-fueled Bobcat Tractor. I also picked up three yellow 5-gallon gas cans to store fuel in. I'm 68, and the fuel inlet on this tractor is almost at shoulder level. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that these crappy EPA-mandated spouts took twenty times longer to drain a five-gallon can than it takes me to drain my bladder. Once I got the intricate slots aligned and the difficult mechanism adequately compressed, I was required to stand there and hold the leaky thing up for ten minutes or more. This was clearly the creation of some pin-headed bureaucratic morons with no common sense. But let me tell you how I really feel.
I soon rigged up a system of bungee cords to hold the can up there while I went off to read War and Peace, but leakage remained a problem.
Finally fed up, I ordered these fuel spouts, and am kicking myself for waiting so long. The spout comes with an air vent which is easily installed in the rear of the can, (drill the hole with a 1/2 inchspeed bore, not a drill bit) and now I can fuel my tractor as God intended! What used to take many minutes now takes seconds, and without any leaking. Get yours now before they are either outlawed or you are required to undergo an FBI background check to obtain one!

50 Now that I think about it, a thread on "Shit The Government Ruined" could be a long one.

2-stroke lawnmowers are a distant memory, because of air pollution concerns. Except, it wasn't a big deal. First, they reduced the blade speed from the 3600 RPM that had long been standard. This was to meet some 21" blade tip mile-per-hour safety regulation somebody decided was safer. The problem was, sometimes people don't clean up debris out of the yard, bits of wire or whatever. So this significantly reduces the quality of the cut grass. Incidentally, a snowblower will also benefit GREATLY from adjusting the RPM level to 3600 - they are often crippled from the factory.

Then they decided to add the shut-off bar, that won't allow the engine to remain running. This adds complexity, failure points, weight, and cost. Then they mandated that lawnmowers be 4 cycle - adding even more weight.

At this point, all mowers are mostly self-propelled, because now they are too goddamned heavy to push around with all the extraneous shit they've hung on them.

Lawn Boy 2-strokes are great, I have a 1976 model, magnesium deck, light as a feather. Push with one hand, easily maneuvered, plows through thick grass like nobodys business, even when wet, that would bog down a four stroke briggs and stratton. Very nice cut, with a striped appearance.

Ringo was spot on "everything the government touches, turns to shit."

165 Refrigerants now are changing to "lower greenhouse warming potential." The phase out of R-22 for residential and light commercial AC was because it "depleted the ozone," but the stuff that replaced it, R-410A, has a GWP of about 2000 times that of CO2. So... now we gotta get rid of that stuff. R-454B is the current frontrunner, scheduled for introduction in '23. Like R-1234yf, this stuff is also "mildly flammable."

Progress.

170 I agree gas cans suck, but there is one that is even better than the old ones: The No-Spill can has a push button that presses with a single finger and immediately stops flowing when you release it.

171 I signed the petition.

Also, I look for the old metal cans at yard sales. I check them for rust.

172 55 I buy old plastic gas cans at thrift stores. I don't need them, but they're great to give away. Alternatively, replacement spouts are available at Amazon. They're usually sold as "water can spouts." There are also lots of YouTube videos showing ways to fix the new ones so they work.

And I buy TSP in bulk at Lowe's or Home Depot.
------------------------------
I have old gas cans so I heard about the problem but never experienced it. Went to my sisters in Oct. and made sure her small Snowblower worked. Newish can. WTF?

You are correct about Youtube, didn't know their were the equivalent of large gun magazine clips for gas cans out there.

Indeed. He stated from the start he wouldn't support Trump and that's pretty much the last we heard of it. The rest of those assholes could learn something from him.

176 I long learnt how to take apart those devices so that they can actually be useful.

Usually I put some tubing on the spout end to control better where the gas goes because they are so short and stiff that you can't get to the opening without spilling some.

I wonder who the designer of that spout was. Was it a committee? If not then whoever it was should have their engineering degree (assuming they have one) rescinded under prejudice.

These are the same folks who designed that Minnesota bridge and we're in for more when they stop requiring math and science in STEM for ppl to get a degree.

God help the space pioneers.

178 There are actually functional no drop gas cans available in California. Expensive... twenty bucks. But no getting gas spilled at all. You can wear good clothes and not smell like gas.

Took many years. But I'm okay with the development. The government doesn't need to get involved in that.

180 I bought a Greenwork battery powered lawn mower and associated power equipment. Not because I give a shot about the environment, but because they work, are very quiet and light, and engine maintenance is zero. Don't have to get gas anymore, which is good because I would probably rage stroke over those gas cans.

181 A few months ago, when one of our cars was running on fumes, I went to put some gas in the tank to make sure I could get to the station. After draining the old gas can, I found myself incapable of getting any gas out of the newer one.
I thought it was just me - I didn't know that the Obamee administration had ruined gas cans just like it ruined light bulbs, washing machines and detergents.
Liberals ruin EVERYTHING.

182 These fit in anything that takes a standard Scepter pattern cap - ranging from big box lawnmower gas cans to Rotopax.

https://tinyurl.com/rusgg3u

They're often marketed as "water" spouts, especially for the Rotopax. They're self-vented and work in the same general fashion as old school steel fuel can spouts (which are still on the market - both cans and spouts)

CARB spouts are trash and belong in the trash.

good luck with a battery powered snowblower. The author mention snow blowers for a reason. The biggest battery powered snow blower I could find is a $600 Snow Joe. Considering in the wonderful world of lawn care, electric mowers are usually more expensive than gas, $600 isn't going to get you much of a snow blower. I've got a 24 inch gas Ariens that I think I paid a $1000 for.

You are out in a snow storm. Woah be you many times if you wait until the storm stops.
It's maybe 20 degrees or less out.
You are bundled up with your full gear on.
It's dark. A lot of us do this fun in the dark.
And then you have to screw with gasoline.

I've rarely ever filled a snowblower with gloves on.
It's not fun, even with a gas can that pours, let alone one that doesn't.

185 I've dumped far more gas into the Mississippi river with the "safety" cans than I ever did with the old style cans. Good job, EPA.

187 I live on 5 acres, so I keep half a dozen 5-gallon gas cans in rotation for my various implements.
I found a solution that at least allows the gas to actually pour from the can.
gas spouts [dot] com
They sell a replacement spout that has a built in vent. I put one on every can I own, and the EPA will have to pry them from my cold, dead hands if they try to make me give them up.

I'm fortunate and live in the heart of Flyover Land, so I can just go to Tractor Supply to pick up a 2-pack of flexible spouts with extensions whenever I need to correct the EPA's "unintended" mistake.
