"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" Trailer

I initially didn't like it, and wanted to say "#NotMyGhostbusters," but it's grown on me in the past five minutes.

It's set in a small town in the midwest, rather than New York City. This might have something to do with Dan Aykroyd's complaining that Lady Ghostbusters cost far, far too much money to ever be profitable (even if it had been good, which it wasn't).

It also might have something to do with the film's need to position itself as different in all ways from the disastrous Lady Ghostbusters abortion. They need a different setting, a different tone, and a different age cohort of the main characters.

It also differentiates itself from Lady Ghostbusters -- and from The Real Ghostbusters -- by presenting itself not as a comedy at all, but some kind of Spielbergian action fantasy.

There are no jokes in the trailer. None.

Now that's definitely running from Lady Ghostbusters. Whether this is an accurate teaser for the actual movie or if they're just trying too hard to show they're not like the Fake Ghostbusters, desperate for laughs, I don't know.

It has a very Stranger Things look and feel, down to the Spielbergian suburban barely-middle-class messiness.

It has Paul Rudd. I didn't know he was in this.

The Ghostbusters do not appear in the clip, except in a clip from what is probably Ghostbusters 2, presented as a television news clip, as Paul Rudd explains that there were lots and lots of ghosts to bust in the 80s.

But there have been no ghosts since then. Until now.

Didn't see that one coming.

I assume the Ghostbusters will show up (the living ones, at least) to mentor the kids a little, and might even suit up for the climax, but the main characters here are clearly the little kids so the OG Ghostbusters won't be in the movie much and aren't really needed by the plot all that much.

What do you think?

Also, the Critical Drinker reviewed the trailer for the Fake James Bond movie.

Good line about the miserable, dour, sad, pathetic Daniel Craig: "James Bond must be the only guy on earth who doesn't want to be James Bond."

5 Early teaser means there's very little in terms of special effects available, so the ghosts are being held back.

I've also read that the surviving Ghostbusters are coming back in cameo form, ala their presences in Lady Ghostbusters.

10 So long as we're talking about movies, I saw Frozen II over the weekend. Pleasantly surprised. Not nearly as good as the original and there are zero songs that I can imagine will come close to rivaling "Let It Go", but the movie itself was better than I expected.

Much darker than the original, as well. Also not surprising.

16 I dunno as a kids fighting ghosts with granddaddy's tools in a non comedy Ghostbusters is what everyone wanted to see, but it seems like it might suck less than the previous one.

There was one joke at least though: the kid talking about "remember the summer we went to the country and died in an earthquake?"

You know what isn't being complained about? That a girl is one of the main characters, perhaps THE main character. Nobody is upset about that.

Almost as if the problem with lady Ghostbusters wasn't that it was girls but that THEY SUCKED AND WEREN'T FUNNY

36 Just last night I watched the little-known "lost" installment in the Ghostbusters series: "Evolution," from 2000, with David Duchovny and Julianne Moore.

Technically, it's not part of the Ghostbusters franchise, but it's basically the exact same movie as Ghostbusters with some minor plot tweaks (aliens instead of ghosts), and of course it has Dan Aykroyd acting like Dan Aykroyd.

Here's the link, in case you're never of it:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251075/

Same exact style of CGI effects, same plucky squad of underdogs zapping the "semi-humorous, semi-scary" CGI villains with unlikely substances out of hoses and so forth, etc. etc. They just took the Ghostbusters script, changed a few actors and a few details, and re-shot it.

Oh: Was it any good? Eh. Decent. 6 out of 10.

Jason Reitman obviously has a emotional connection to the Buster-verse since his dad directed the first two (and he had a small role as the You guys are full of crap kid in GB2) and won't cr*p the bed with this like the 2016 version did. It was the fact that the comedic style of Paul Feig doesn't mesh well with a tightly constructed fantasy action film.

Instead of starting from a funny script, they just had the actors riff on everything. So, the movie chugs along until the next moment the actors break character and try to be funny, boiling a three hour improv session to 15 seconds.

81 Funnily enough, that Ghostbusters trailer is almost exactly one of the scenarios my sister and I gamed out after the disaster of Lady Ghostbusters. "This," we said to each other, "is how this movie could have WORKED." One of our ideas was to set the movie in a no-name, off-the-beaten-path town in the Midwest or other rural location, and have a group of people set up a Ghostbusters franchise. That way you get new locations, new faces, new ghosts, but it's still tied in to the overall Ghostbusters "mythos", if you will. It sounds like this movie is trying to tap into some of those same ideas. I'm actually not adverse to seeing this one.

James Bond has been dead to me for years. If they'd cast Idris Elba I might have given it a shot, because that man is never anything but fantastic and makes everything he's in better, but this drek? Sorry, I'm washing my hair.

PS -- Yes, I think Elba can even make that hideous-looking film-adapted abortion "Cats" better, though that just puts it on the level of dog vomit, so not much of an improvement really.

95 Speaking of James Bond:

I was in London earlier this year, walking down what I thought was a random street, and I followed -- or tried to follow -- Google Maps to a nice path along the Thames with a nice view across the river.

I blindly stumbled into a veritable hive of heavily armed 'security officers," both in police uniform and in plainsclothes, swarming all around me. "Excuse me! Where do you think you're going???" "Um, down here..."

"BACK AWAY! THIS AREA IS OFF LIMITS!"

I raised my eyes to notice that I was next to a new-ish building that was literally ringed with armed officers holding automatic rifles, etc.

They shooed me away without further incident.

Once out of their eyesight, I looked up what in hell the building was. To my shock, it was the MI6 headquarters -- used as a setting in many Bond films. In one of them (I forget which) Bond escapes a villain there by flying out an MI6 window on a speedboat that lands in the river.) From that very building.

It' a real place. But no Judi Dench or Pierce Brosnan or any of that. I had no clue.

Posted by: m at December 09, 2019 04:07 PM (UZ8BZ)

More movies need to be like this. In the old days, there we loads of old writers around from the days when there were scads of movies made, TV shows as well and also magazines with actual stories. People could learn to write a movie.

The collapse of the movie industry with the few huge blockbusters and fewer and fewer viewers means there are less writing slots open and the decline of education means most writers can't even make a coherent Star Wars story work.

They need to find vehicles where writers can learn to write, directors direct, etc without dropping 100 million in the process. So my question about this is *can* the writers make a coherent movie script and can the director execute it, because the lesson of most movies these days is that they can't or won't.

158 Maybe they're saving the jokes for the movie and/or full trailer? This is just to set up bare premise and introduce characters. Paul Rudd is a pleasant surprise, and he can make otherwise serious-y stuff funny like Ant-Man - kinda like the original GB; action fantasy starring funny people.

I like the trailer. Ghostbusters already did "the same, but more" with GBII, and LGB flopped hard with it. Change up the format.

For example - the change in type of movie (horror to mil action sci-fi) is what kept Aliens from being merely a rehash, but a fresh take.

168 I might give it a go, for a few reasons.

1. It's different. It's not just a story about "can kids do it," it's a story about ghosts in a different place, acting differently. I'm frankly indifferent about the kids. Even more frankly, I might enjoy this more if they weren't kids.

2. It's a sequel, but not really. I've always liked the "if you found grandpa's old (insert name of gadget)" plot device.

3. It can have women in it. I don't care. I didn't see any girls, just boys, but I wasn't really paying attention.

4. I really like Paul Rudd

190 More movies need to be like this.

234 I thought he said "dived under a table." It was a little mumbly.

I think it was died under a table, but... sound mixing is terrible in movies lately, for years now. I think they're mixed so it works in a theater only and is mushy and often hard to hear on a home system (on purpose?). Usually the music is MUCH LOUDER than the dialog.

238 206 Speaking for myself, I kind of lost interest in Stranger Things after season two. I can't be the only one.

I lost interest 3 episodes in. It was heavy on the something is going to happen and light on the anything interesting actually happening. This is common with made-for-streaming series in my experience; they have a 90-120 minute movie and they drag it out into 8-12 episodes.

305 The Afterlife trailer looks great and I think it's an inspired way to chart a new feel.

And while much less jokey, it's not entirely devoid of jokes. Someone off camera, I can't tell if it's Rudd, half-sings the "Call if fate, call it luck, call it karma" line from the original.

Could be fun!

426 Ah, I see we're OT.

One of the new-ish and very worrisome developments that began just as the war ended was Japanese use of older mostly wooden/fabric trainer biplanes for kamikaze attacks - at night. Our radar had real trouble detecting them, and at night, they could and did sneak up on a few ships that were close to the main islands. It was correctly feared that in Op Olympic the Japanese would make great use of this particular plane/technique, for which there was no ready counter.

Of course the kamikazes would suffer from greatly reduced ability to make best target selection [they'd finally figured out - transports/logistics ships, not warships, were the pay-dirt], it being dark and all.

439 The main thing is that the carrier woudn't have to literally wipe out every other ship in the Japanese Navy, just enough that they would all be recalled to protect the homeland. Which would make the job much easier, a carrier could hold off the enemy while devastating Japan until the fuel and ammo ran out.

But... they could re-tool a lot and maybe keep going with period weapons and ammo. With the seas clear of Japanese warships, resupply would be a hell of a lot easier.

The .308 bullet itself had a slight taper towards the base of the bullet, which was supposed to help in medium to long range stability and improve accuracy, and also allowed a little higher muzzle velocity. Those things really only made a difference with a well trained rifleman, though. Not much difference between the .308 and .30-06 ("06" was for the year 1906 when it was introduced).

But then, I haven't seen "Stranger Things."

466 Old saying: You can't eat your dessert twice.

Once you've seen something you enjoyed, it's almost impossible to repeat that again for you.

It's not even a palate cleanser of the puke in the mouth that was the Lady Ghostbusters.

Even if you take it and make it more serious and with kids.

That's why you don't see authors redoing their masterwork.

Sure some of them do sequels but they are a continuation of the beginning story and no movie starts out like that. They start off as one offs and only if they are a hit do they try to do sequels and those sequels are usually bad.

Herman Melville didn't write Moby Dick II: Ahab Returns, for a reason.

467 All of Hollywood is dead to me. These trailers do not even start to convince me to change that policy.

468 I thought the Ghostbusters trailer holds promise, 00SJW i'm not sure about, great action sequences but at what cost? I have no desire to be lectured for 2hrs about how I should retire so a millennial moron can get raise.

470 It won't be funny. Comedy is dead unless it's Rick and Morty-type of funny but then that makes it almost X-rated. I won't be going to any movie theater to see it if I do.
