Who is in the background? I can't tell the person's sex. If it's an old chambermaid, then all is probably well. If it's an Epstein type, though, I am glad that Rijn didn't paint the next scene.

In a lot of cultures, being large was a sign of upper-class status because you were well-fed. Large women were also healthy and birthed healthy sons. Since Danae was a princess, it's not unusual to depict her as a full-bodied girl. But like CBD said above, the Baroque Dutch seemed to have liked their ladies with a little extra squish.

111 Pseudo-OT. On the Morning Report, someone noted that the art thread was late, and inquired as to whether CBD was dead.

Anna Puma then inverted it to "art is dead, CBD is late." I will admit to having the same thought. And I think the reason is, sadly, that art *is* basically dead. Ever since the Great War, artists (and the "art crowd") have pursued depravity and ugliness instead of beauty or realism or an ideal.

If you have an hour, there is a film (I am guessing from the 80s or early 90s) by Roger Scruton from England. Scruton has been unpersoned, but this is a very nice film called, "Why Beauty Matters" and it is about art and architecture and its pursuit of hideousness instead of beauty - and why this is such a human disaster. It is a defense of beauty and truth as artistic and philosophical concepts, and is well worth the time.

The only version I can find for free has Portuguese subtitles, but they don't detract from the film.

113 I just finished watching The Devil Next Door, a documentary on Netflix about John Dejmanjuk. A very interesting case that I had only heard vaguely about. After having watched it, I'm not really sure if Dejmanjuk was Ivan the Terrible, as there was conflicting evidence that pointed to another guard being Ivan. In my opinion, Dejmanjuk probably was a concentration camp guard, but he wasn't Ivan. Something we'll probably never know.

194 I saw that painting in 1976, in the Hermitage, in the city then known as Leningrad. I'd been making my way through the Hermitage's galleries of Dutch paintings - Peter the Great was a big fan, and bought up every mediocre canvas of windmills and canals that he could lay his hands on - when I stumbled into the smallish room that held this painting and, on the opposite wall, Rembrandt's "Prodigal Son". Both are large paintings, nearly life size, and the effect of unexpectedly seeing them for the first time was overwhelming - literally overwhelming. The best way I can describe it is to say that the greatest works of art, such as Michelangelo's "David" or Velazquez's "Las Meninas", project a field of power, almost like a gravitational field, that seizes the viewer. So it was with me that day. It was an experience I will never forget.

I had said a while ago that I think Nancy's best play would be to have an impeachment vote on the floor and ensure that it fails due to moderate Democratic votes.

The activist left won't have enough time or money to mount any serious primary challenges against the incumbent moderate Democrats, and they'll all fall in line anyway in the face of Literally Hitler.

However, I'm not sure if moderate Democrats are going to be able to massage their message well enough with their votes to authorize the impeachment process. It's going to be too easy for Republican challengers to say, "You voted for impeachment!" with a grain of truth and too hard for Democrats to explain the difference between the two votes.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Strong with the Force Schwartz at December 10, 2019 10:42 AM (q80AH)

312 #202
I would argue that Nancy allowing impeachment to grow to this size and
even getting her moderate members on record as supporting it shows that
she has no idea what she's doing.
==========================
The Dem Trainwreck is due, in large part, to the infernal symbiotic relationship between the Democrat party and the MSM. Politicians love to feel important, and their press enablers love to get a story. "Impeachment" is catnip for news organizations: It's a national story that doesn't require a financial burden like self-funding investigations and research teams. Democrats provide all of that on the taxpayers' dime. Or, they'll just make sh*t up and feed it to their MSM acolytes. Win-win. For them, not the people of the United States of America.

They will come together for impeachment. However, when that fails, don't expect some factions to be placated. The left coast will explode.

Yeah, that result invalidates the idea that there's anything remotely non-partisan about the affair. That's not just a messaging problem towards the public, but towards moderate Republicans in the Senate.

Already there's no way in hell will there be 20 Republican Senators in support of conviction.

An impeachment vote that squeaks with a bare majority after the procedural vote passed with much higher numbers will tell people like Romney that conviction is dead.

433 >>Its the Mueller playbook, it is no Obstruction to use the Powers and RIGHTS the Constitution gives us, to defend from false allegations.

It's the Barry Berke/Norm Eisen playbook. Mueller just adopted it.

It's not a coincidence they were hired by the House Democrats when they took the majority and they ran the hearing yesterday.

I don't remember who said it, but the quote is: "thank heavens that men and women love each other. It would be too much to ask that they merely like one another that much."

440 Boris Johnson has the benefit of being entertaining and likeable.

Apparently he is organized and motivated and clever too. And apparently willing to go to the mat on anything.

His ad shown on the sidebar is wonderful, and wonderfully transgressive to the modern woke electorate, transgressive to basic assumptions that they can't admit to.

Genius trolling on a masterwork level.

441 This will get shouted down - but my personal experience shows it to be true. Most of them can't tolerate being ignored, and will go to great lengths to get your attention.

Elvis has a song called "Treat me Right".

I play and sing it for every prospective long term girl friend.

Its about treat me right, or I am gone. They think its cute until I explain to them, no, I mean it.

448 NPR commentary on peach mint puffery this morning redefined the word "sophomoric".

Had all the depth of yoga moms dissecting how that bitch Tracy ever got elected prom queen back in the day. Talked on and on about how Trump is dissing Congress by being a poopy-head, only mentioning at the very end this little thing called "the courts"(which Adam Schiff assured us we don't have time to wait "months and months" for).

Mara Liasson was brilliant in explaining why Trump immediately releasing the transcript was actually obfuscation and obstructing of Congress. And Ayesha Roscoe must tow a respirator around, because she cannot possibly be smart enough to breath on her own! Jesus H. Christ these women are an insult to mammalian life!
