Stuff it, Justin. OR just shut up and learn something from the Master, PDJT. Posted by: Pete Seria at December 06, 2019 12:35 PM (7ZQe3) +++++++++++++ 70k? Seriously? Canada's working-age population is about 24 million. That's it. That means that 0.3% of the working-age population lost their jobs. That's a big damn figure. Contract with the winning side of the border. We've added around 4 million jobs since 2017. Our working-age population (not the labor force, just the whole population) is about 210 million. By the same standard, 1.9% of the working-age population *gained* a job. A 0.3% loss versus a 1.9% gain in countries that essentially share a common culture. If I were a Canadian facing this kind of contrast, especially given how fucked up the US is, I'd be sorely tempted to burn Ottawa to the ground. imo there are "global economy" problems, and USA is still the safe haven, and being the super power does not hurt. After 2020 we either go MMT (modern monetary theory, magic money tree) and/or we take some deliberate actions against the corporate ownership of our government. Debt will get "repaid" in some sense, but it could be in some sort of restructuring/reset/ColdFusion/Jubilee ... Trump mentioned something about restructured debt (haircut for the bond holders I guess) early in his campaign and Maria B seemed enthused ... iirc. We have a major problem with our medical industry that, if it gets fixed, is going to knock out a bunch of (malinvested) GDP and result in significant unemployment for a bit. Interest rates are still too low and there is a huge amount of global monetary cheating. Not everything is rosy. We are, however, roaring along and I'll happily take it. More importantly, we're making major and crucial structural changes that is altering the "America is the world's sap and piggy-bank" policy, and that is a very good thing indeed. Gaylord's recovery was so piss poor that it barely met the criteria for not still being a recession. The growth which was stifled for eight fucking years was just waiting for anyone to take the boot off the neck. Posted by: Captain Hate at December 06, 2019 12:52 PM (y7DUB) 194
"You think that vote is a lock for dems? I don't."
That narrative only has a hold on people here illegally, others who believe they will get a hand out or better union retirement package. But those are the days that are really over. As we eliminate illegal immigration, crack down on employers, remove their benefit incentives and in general pair down our social programs to people who truly need them, the cracks start to form. I know many legal immigrants who don't support Democrats at all. A lot of them own small businesses or work for them. They get it. Posted by: Hesco Gypsy at December 06, 2019 12:52 PM (G1tCv) 195

Posted by: john knox at December 06, 2019 * * The heck of it, and the puzzle, is that she was an attractive young woman. Usually we see the unattractive people slide toward the Left; they aren't happy with the way the world is (naturally, since it doesn't immediately favor them), and focus instead on the way the world ought to be. And the way it can be coerced into existing (they think) with the aid of Big Government. But Warren was attractive. At least on the outside, in the pics we saw on the 'Net earlier this year. So was Hillary, sort of. I suspect there was something else about each of them that made them unattractive despite the fairly nice outer envelope. Feminism? Speaking of Liz. Did anybody see her clip on Tucker. She is hoping that if she is elected President she's going to work to make sure she is the last President elected by the Electoral College.
LOL! She is a fucking professor! Does she think she can just XO the EC away? Since the Dems are just all about protecting the Constitution, they probably know that this would HAVE to be a Constitutional amendment. And that means Congress votes and it immediately goes to the states--she would have NO ROLE after perhaps, propsing the amendment into Congress. And then you have three-fourths of the states agree that they want to lose representation in the EC vote. Almost half of which would be losing 20% or more of their votes. Here's the thing, if you have two-sided politics. One side wants to get rid of the EC--and that side can't win an EC vote, an EC vote does not take winner-take-all EC votes in 3/4ths of the states! If you can win the EC amendment ratification process, the EC itself is no problem. Dumbness has taken flesh and come to Earth and it is the anti-EC Constitutional amendment. Yeah, I wonder what the numbers today would be if they were using the Obama BS criteria. "Saved or created", what a crock of crap.
No, it wasn't a crock of crap. It was a whole dumpster of it. Let's see how Obama ripens with history. I mean, in 1979 Carter was the Worst President Ever, but over time it's become clear that LBJ was far worse, and those things that Carter bumbled have either been nugatory (the canal) or offset by other real achievements (he pissed the Shah into the canal, but we bought Egypt at the same time). And he gave us Reagan. Right now Obama is clearly worst-five ever, while Carter's kinda moved up the list a bit and might still be worst-third but clearly not Worst Ever. I'm still not convinced that Obama was *not* an agent of a foreign power, but mostly I think he was trying to stir up racial animus domestically. We dodged a huge bullet with the 2010 Congressional election, but the GOP did just about the minimum with it. Posted by: JEM at December 06, 2019 12:55 PM (8erNz) 220

imo Warren's problem is she has her own version of MAGA .. and the globalists don't want that.
"Elizabeth Warren's new "Plan for Economic Patriotism," unveiled Tuesday, marks a stunningly ambitious revival of American industrial policy. Warren berates American companies that "have no loyalty or allegiance" to the nation they were born in. "These 'American' companies show only one real loyalty: to the short-term interests of their shareholders, a third of whom are foreign investors," she writes. "If they can close up an American factory and ship jobs overseas to save a nickel, that's exactly what they will do -- abandoning loyal American workers and hollowing out American cities along the way." The bottom will fall out right before the election, probably worse than what happened in 2008 and for many of the same reasons. All of the underlying problems are still there, except this time there's nothing the gov't can do to bail it out.
Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at December 06, 2019 12:45 PM (CQ3Qb) That's not exactly true; that crisis was triggered by massive amounts of sub-prime loans, and the bundling of them into securities that appeared good but were actually worthless. Although there are still subprime loans, the circumstances that led to that particular crash were a one-off that won't be repeated. AND I think the Bush Admin *did* deserve a good bit of the blame, because they should have seen this coming a year or two ahead of time (plenty of people did) and they did nothing at all about it. *Probably* because they gambled that they could put off any unpleasantness til after the election. But Reagan was 100% right that good expectations drive a good economy. Because he knew his stuff on economics. He knew the data that every time the Carter administration tried to "intervene" with counter-recession measures, the market analysts saw that and interpreted that as a "sign of recession" and it actually *caused* cut-backs on investment and urge to spill inventory and *cause* recessionary moves. I found out my alma mater WSU in Wichita KS is pondering opening an engineering extension university in Mexico. This is being funded by big money interests apparently.
As a back story ,now is starting to be a good time for engineering. Easily the best in my lifetime. For the past 2-3 decades wages have been depressed from hiring masses of third-world engineers at bargain wages. But lately, the past 2-3 years, hiring has boomed. Not just in defense but commercial. More importantly there's a renewal of gonzo-engineering ideas like Super Sonic Transport, sky taxis, drones, space, etc.. Jobs reqs are getting hard to fill because the younger crowd is all leaving traditional engineering to work on "cool" stuff. So a need to back fill causing rising wages, better opportunities, yada yada. But no, we can't have that so lets create another stream of cheap engineering labor, this time from south of the border. Posted by: Easy Andy at December 06, 2019 01:10 PM (2DOZq) The guy who deserves the most credit for that economy? Paul Volcker, chairman of the Fed. Thereafter lenders were willing to loan the US money at much lower interest rates, which in turn sparked the economic boom. * Recall that the late 70s were an era where unions were demanding more and more to offset inflation, and were showing signs of British-style trade union militancy. That era ended when Reagan clobbered PATCO, and Volcker clobbered expectations of inflation. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at December 06, 2019 01:15 PM (d0vJg) 384

Right on. I used to physically demonstrate to people what the next president had to do to boost the economy. And I'd pantomime stepping back. And they would ask me what that was. And I'd tell them, "just step off the neck of the economy".
I think my analysis has proven true--but I'm also going to say that it's very likely a good deal of it is Trump. Posted by: Axeman at December 06, 2019 01:14 PM (YOhRS) Yep. Sitting around the dinner table I said Trump had a good chance of getting nomination, and if he did, a not bad chance of winning the election, and in that case the economy would explode because Obama's stinky foot would be off the neck of the economy, and Hillary's wouldn't take its place. The family rolled their eyes, thinking I was ready for the dementia ward. But they admit now I was correct, across the board. Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at December 06, 2019 01:11 PM (aKsyK) As to whether Companies should be "loyal" - the entire question is, to who? To say "America" is misleading, because that hides what the speaker really wants. Liz Warren wants companies to be "Loyal" to the Far Left Wing of the Democrat Party. She does NOT want companies taking a stand against Transgenderism, for just one example. I think it's fair to ask that Companies based here should be loyal to the everyday working Americans who were born here and who will die here. That, I think is justified. Sub-prime is back in a big way. They just renamed them "non-prime" loans. CDO's have also returned. Personal debt is higher than ever.
Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at December 06, 2019 01:09 PM (CQ3Qb) Sub prime car loans. 8-10 years with zero down. It's insane. Then the technicals of the stock market. The majority of stocks are under their 50 day moving average. The majority are in the red moving down. The market is being moved by a handful of huge companies, whose P/E ratios are at historically high numbers like Amazon at with a 78x multiple. Companies are buying back their own stocks but the largest shareholders are selling for a huge profit. The influx of ETFs, which are a new financial product. Banks will need to be bailed out again looking at that large German bank at 7 bucks a share down from 120 will be the next Lehman. The Fed is still injecting more and more momey with diminishing returns. The markets should have been allowed to correct in 2008 and in 2015-2016. The Globalists are setting Trump and Americans up IMHO. Posted by: squirrelly dan at December 06, 2019 01:19 PM (ecUbR) 415
285, The techlords, etc. might have done Bush in in 2008 but Trump is another matter.
Imagine a similar crash in Sept. 2020, do you really think that Trump would not announce immediate investigations, nationalization of companies, with the the oligarchs. An angered general population would be looking for a target and Trump could easily direct them to Soros, Steyer, Buffet, etc. Remember, that FISA plays both ways, arguably given many of the financial industries footsie with corrupt foreign leaders and governments, Trump essentially could simply query the NSA intercept database and release any incriminating documents to the enraged population and on the q/t do the same thing with Congress critters. Note, that in the case of 2008, Obama did nothing regarding the self-dealing, corruption, etc. that was disclosed after the financial crisis. I don't think that Trump would be so restrained as GWB as they are not wired the same way. Increasingly, I think that GWB was a passive receptacle for whatever policies that Global Inc wanted which is why a lot of the old Bushies are NeverTrumpers--their grift is disappearing. If Obama believed in the country, her people and our way of life this COULD have been his economy. But he didn't and was only trying to find a way to "transform it" while keeping some of the gravy flowing. The economy never took off because he wanted to try and increase the reach of government into the private sector in order to better control the means of production.
In the end, it FI ailed miserably and people started to figure out what was happening. That's how you got Trump. Posted by: Hesco Gypsy at December 06, 2019 01:20 PM (G1tCv) 423

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at December 06, 2019 01:15 PM (d0vJg) --- Reagan knew what needed to be done, and got himself elected into the position where he could be the one to do it. I agree that Volker's contribution cannot be slighted. And a little known fact is that Congress was waiting for a president willing to take the bullet on Supply-Side economics. It's one of the reasons that it passed so quickly through Congress, despite all the belly-aching and rhetoric in the press. The Preening Class in Congress was waiting to see what Supply-side could do, but they were politicians, and they don't stick their neck out for anybody. So when Reagan trotted up to the plate, he was willing to be the scapegoat that Congress needed in case it all went South. The rest was all show. 414, the problem with sub-prime loans on cars is more readily resolvable than of homes. The used car market generally disposes of used cars more easily than homes. Mortgage crises destabilize neighborhoods and local tax collection because foreclosure is difficult and valuations are more sticky in those cases.
Foreclosures on car loans are easier and represent less of a general threat to the economy (they are more similar to the 1980's crisis of loans to foreign countries) in that they threaten the institutions making them but less so the general economy. Regarding car loans, people that default will presumably have to buy beaters, the used car market will get a lot of late model types that hurt current car sales but people driving beaters will trade up. You can also transfer repo cars to different markets unlike real estate. Posted by: whig at December 06, 2019 01:26 PM (MwILh) 472

the problem with sub-prime loans on cars is more readily resolvable than of homes. The used car market generally disposes of used cars more easily than homes. Mortgage crises destabilize neighborhoods and local tax collection because foreclosure is difficult and valuations are more sticky in those cases.
Posted by: whig at December 06, 2019 01:26 PM (MwILh) --- That and people don't normally package debt on cars as the return of other instruments. By the way, the MBSs could have survived, if it hadn't have been for the Sarbanes-Oxley act, which made them toxic in a declining market. Posted by: Axeman at December 06, 2019 01:32 PM (YOhRS) 490

Trump > Reagan, to my eyes. Posted by: Lurking L Reagan took over a very damaged economy and very demoralized country. What he did can't be equaled IMHO. The connection between stock indexes and depressions is not 100%. The massive drop in 87 did not presage a depression unlike the 1929 crash.
One of the issues involved is that stock prices in the long term revert to expected earnings from future profits. There is a lot of short term noise in individual stocks but overall the stock markets are fairly efficient in being able to predict future earnings (dividends and capital gains) when considering the market as a whole. Current economic models have been based largely on the idea of single country analysis in a global world so that the whole idea of the business cycle and Keynesian economics is rendered suspect. A shift in the U.S. becoming more self reliant in production as it has in petroleum has created means that a significant outflow for energy has been replaced by that money staying in the country. Multiply that by insourcing other production and moving production of some things to other countries not named China has also created some uncertainty in just how much growth the U.S. economy might gain. The financial industry, on the other hand, will presumably suffer from low interest rates, less international transactions to gain commissions, etc., and so on. I really do not think that economists trained under the dominant Keynesian economics have effectively dealt with the single country effects of de-globalizing as their predominant presumption was that globalization would carry all before it and there was no turning back. History says quite another thing and that the results are difficult to predict (see the nature of the Reformation on fund transfers from Northern to Southern Europe for example). There just are not that many economic historians with most current economists quantitative analysts of one sort or another. Posted by: whig at December 06, 2019 01:40 PM (MwILh) 503

489, Axeman, seems reasonable to me. The 1986 Tax Reform act was a primary cause of the 1987 Stock Market meltdown but the effects were muted by effective policy actions by Treasury and the Fed unlike in 2008. We nearly had a similar issue in 1997 regarding debt issues in Asia but again prompt action prevented that from spreading.
Paulson was an awful Sec. of Treasury appt. by Shrub and Helicopter Ben was not much better. Posted by: whig at December 06, 2019 01:43 PM (MwILh) 505

Posted by: Hesco Gypsy at December 06, 2019 01:30 PM (G1tCv) --- I agree, we corrections are bound to happen. Which is why I fear that political opportunists will run to the camera and give their rendition of Chicken Little. Again, economies can stay afloat when people have an expectation of return. If the media spreads panic--and why should we not expect them to?--it could result in anything. That's one of the big things of the 2007 fall. If you had the MBSs in your portfolio you had no expectation of being able to get them out by selling them. They were going to the ground and you weren't getting out of them. There was no expectation of return, so panic. Now that propagandists have basically branded swaps as Evil, we won't have similar forces to 2007. However lenders are still going to need offsetting assets against liabilities in the case that their assets are devalued in the market, and it will be interesting to see how that works in any downturn of the market.
