Tucker Carlson Pounds Paul Singer, Charles Koch, and Little Ben Sasse Again;
Bill Kristol Swoops In To Defend His Best Funder Friend

Video below, and Bill Kristol's cowardly client servicing.

Ned Ryun correctly says that the billionaire donor class, including Paul Singer and Charles Koch, is "barely Republican, and certainly not conservative."

And yet they dictate what the party fights for and what the party merely pretends to fight for and what the party must now accept as "True Conservative" doctrine.

Bill Kristol of course was obligated to defend Singer -- whether obligated by loyalty or by contractual stipulation -- but didn't want people to be able to google "Bill Kristol Paul Singer" and find evidence, so he avoided naming Singer.

462 440 As a whole, boomers have fared better financially than Gen Xers (born between 1965 and 1980) and millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) throughout every stage of their lives. Boomers currently boast more than half (57%) of the nation's wealth, while Gen X owns just 16%, and millennials 3%.

but what does that have to do with what singer's vulture capitalism did to cabela, driving a merger with bass pro shops then selling for a quick buck, thus emptying out sydney.

i like a lot of what tucker says, especially focusing on topics ignored by the rest. but sometimes his populism is b.s. or just plain nonsensical. like here.

She was just aghast that some cretinous (probably fellow lib) drank a goodly amount of the $$ booze. Darned cretin was supposed to understand that having the booze out was just to signal that their good taste; and did NOT mean that it available for guests.

ROFL that some selfish fellow lib, or at least rich OC dude took advatange of the class signalling, figuring they wouldn't lose face by stammering some sort of "Oh OOOPS, we didn't mean to have that GIFT out with the normal booze, we were saving it for A very special occasion" Mwahaahaa

It's unknown uknowns.

It turns out that lassaiz faire capitalism that the right has supported was based on arguments that relied on assumptions that the investor class weren't openly hostile to the rest of the country. Globalists like Paul Singer don't care about what happens to a town in Nebraska. They want to just bump up the company balance sheets and make it seem prettier long enough to make their millions, and they don't care what the long-term effects are.

ok

but what does that have to do with what singer's vulture capitalism did to cabela, driving a merger with bass pro shops then selling for a quick buck, thus emptying out sydney.

Socialism is easier to sell to people when they're stuck in a dying town with no job prospects because the company that they worked for was gutted and sold overseas. They look towards socialism when they're desperate because their kid is hospitalized for the third time for a drug overdose and they can't afford to pay the bill, but hey, here's Medicaid to help.

A company like Cabela's is a good buffer against socialism, because when it helps anchor a community and provide a chance for people to work and provide for themselves.

percent of total wealth is not the same as wealth

The rich have gotten uber rich on bailouts and monetary policy that serves markets. Those invested in stocks back in the 80's saw modest investments make their net worth millions, and the housing bubble means their homes are worth another half million at least.

Since 1985 monetary policy has kept decreasing fed funds rates ... and some of the inflation has shown up as "wealth". Millennials may be making less, but overall inflation made the rich richer, and working to get rich is not as easy. imo, I didn't look at the study.

Yes. Wages are stagnant since the 70's. The dollar has only 25% of purchasing power since 1972. Since 1990, 63% of all jobs created are low wage jobs. Middle class manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas. Legal and illegal immigration are driving down wages and keeping them artificially low. Most assets are in bubbles.

Gen X and younger didn't vote for the insane policies that created these conditions.

Shall I continue or would time be better spent on how to actually find solutions and organize to reverse the trend, which will end America.

272 wealth is the money you haven't blown. boomers didn't spend a fortune on phones or let their socialist teachers trick them out of a house worth of cash or think that $5 for a cup of coffee was essential. they also didn't spend their early working years in the Obama Green Shits Economy.
Posted by: x at December 05, 2019 05:21 PM (nFwvY)

Yep. I made that point on the previous thread. Shitty financial management is a recipe for being poor.

We taught our sons the following question: what do you get in return for what you are being asked to pay? Is it worth that to you?

It sounds trivial, but making the calculation explicit rather than implicit helps a lot in making sound decisions.

Other things I taught them: watch out particularly for recurring expenses. "It's ONLY $X per month!" is the route to debt.

Last, I took them through a credit card statement ("focus on the smallest font print. That's the nut-cutting part.") and how revolving credit works. (If you don't pay off the entire balance each month, you get NO grace period on further purchases. Instead, you pay 18% annual interest from the minute you buy that thing. The surprise anal otters only wish they had that kind of provision.)

I also took them through a spreadsheet showing how your debt compounds over time, and pointed out that if you SAVE your money, compounding works in your favor, instead of against you.

So far, they've taken that counsel to heart.

276 Medium had a good article about the Boomers and their investing patterns. The thrust of the article was that the 90s tech boom was driven in part by the need of boomers to make large returns on their investments because they were behind where they needed to be to fund their retirement. Ditto the housing bubble. So they chased after higher returns, and companies in turn learned to focus on goosing their books to drive up the stock price, even if in the long run it wasn't healthy. Ditto for the housing market, where boomers well into their careers could afford to buy every bigger houses, helping drive up prices and fueling speculation.

It happened to a company I used to work for. The company is in a business that can quickly bankrupt you if not careful. They weren't bad to work for, but they were cheap at times. So, they were in solid financial shape, owned their own 10+ story building. Vulture guys came in and gutted the company. They even sold the building and leased it back. It got so bad, the company wasn't paying the lease.

And you don't make big dollars on your house by buying into more expensive places. You make the big dollars by staying in the same place and trying to pay off the mortgage.

The borrower gets their credit dinged with a bankruptcy. The company that wrote the crappy loans goes out of business (or at least makes considerably less profit). That's how it's supposed to work.

361 A lot of the issue that is causing angst that is infecting both the right and left is the disintegration of a shared definition of what is good in society. The old liberal-conservative argument from the New Deal focused on how much government should spend and tax. Both sides agreed that unemployment was bad, home ownership was good, economic development was good, etc. Social conflicts other than racial integration were muted.

While its origins were earlier, beginning about 2000, we begin to see a mutated Marxism in identity politics along with end of times environmentalism take hold in the left and on the right began a serious reappraisal of the role of large corporations, immigration, globalism, etc. Conservatives began to realize something was up by the rotten nature of the bank bailouts which accelerated via corporate fascism tactics and its support for social engineering. The abuse of the immigration system by these behemoths did not help matters. Corporations have socialized their costs and losses and essentially privatized their gains.

Essentially, the wealthy and corporate managers have become a new aristocracy, the educational government establishment has become a new clerisy, and the average people are on the outside looking in. Tucker is smart enough to realize that.

I suspect that we may see Tucker run for higher office as this sort of political commentary will be toxic in the long run for the Murdochs.

Another vulture-like thing Singer and others of his ilk do is a little trick with "distressed" sovereign debt. Same some country gets in trouble (think Greece) and it's bonds become worthless.

Singer and such like come in and buy up that debt for pennies on the dollar. Note the original investors lose their ass. By selling, they take their loss.

Now Singer then has bonds that promise to pay say $100 at maturity which he picked up for say 20 cents. That's a YUGE return.

He uses his political influence to get a bailout for the country, via the IMF, etc, then ruthlessly holds the country to the terms of the original debt.

He profits enormously, even if he doesn't get the full return on the bonds.

Believe it or not, George W. Bush actuall stepped in and stopped Singer from doing this somehow. It was too much even for W.

But Obama let Singer do this.

The President has some sort of power to easily stop someone from playing around with foreign debt like this, I've forgotten the details. W. exercised it, Obama didn't.

The others - all of them - in my judgment would've folded like a cheap suit. Trump, I thought, maybe not. What kind of President would he be? 449 I just had an object lesson in how Big Corps are NOT on our side. Centerpoint Energy is our Nat Gas utility, much like Atmos in other cities. They've decided that because of fears about old gas lines, they're replacing all of the old stainless steel lines that are underground. That's all well and good. They're also replacing all the lines from the street up to the gas meter at the house, which is interesting, but I got no problem with that either. They've got this bulldozer sized directional driller that runs the lines through, kind of amazing to watch.

SO I was at a property I own and wanted to talk to the crew who was working there, heavy equipment, big corp, looked like Union work - but I had to go through the entire crew to find one guy who spoke a little bit of English, and he was the Supervisor. I'll guarantee that every damn one of their crews just got out of the back of the cattle truck from Mexico. That's how Big Corps are hiring these days.

Thank Congress for changing the bankruptcy laws that don't allow for discharge of bad debt from college loans.

With this one change in the law, money is no longer "scarce" for loans, it is like candy for anyone to be had.

So the result is more wymyn's study degrees and psychology degrees, that earn the student a decade of employment at the local coffee shop.

College tuition is kinda like the tulip craze of the 1600's. It does not reflect real market conditions for loans. And the situation is getting worse.

Until this situation is fixed, with either the ability to write off bad debt in BK, or the college has to take some responsibility and eat some of the loan if the student isn't employable, simply has to happen.

There are way too many 30 year olds with degrees and jobs, but still cannot qualify for a starter home. Everyone pays for this problem. Only the colleges benefit with hanging bad student loans over the heads of millions of students.

Everyone in Japan knew that it was impossible to outbuild the USN since at least the 1920s. That's why they wanted to build up and attack in 1941 rather than wait until our prewar building programs came online in 1943-44.

The dumb part came when the Navy brass, including Yamamoto somehow decided that the best way to get around the issue was to not only attack our Philippine dependency, but also attack Pearl Harbor under the supposition that this would make us give up. Aside from the political anger angle, PH made it impossible for the US to instantly send a relief force to the Philippine Islands to fight the decisive battle they had built their navy to fight and win. US planners had already decided not to do so, but losing the battle line made it a sure thing, so the offensive against Japan had to wait until the new navy had arrived in force, and the attrition battle the Japanese feared was assured.

It's been holy writ for over 40 years that going to college is how you get ahead. For awhile, it was true. Even getting a French poetry degree meant you could get a decent job, because it meant you had a respectable IQ and could work. Well, that is out the door because the humanities are cesspools of laziness and stupidity. If they allowed job testing again, it would break the backs of academia.
So, I fault colleges a lot and the kids a lot less. The people who know better are taking advantage of the immature and ill informed.
