Saturday Morning Coffee Break

the-best-100-photos-of-the-week-20160306-41.jpg

***

Good morning Morons and Lurkers. Let us take a gander at a few items that didn't get too much attention here at the AosHQ this past week. As always, this is an open thread, so be nice to one another. Don't run with sharp objects. And please don't tug on the 'ettes pony tails.

  • Know your target and what is beyond it.

  • Bah Humbug!

  • Only our government would think a farmer working with soil is a pollutant.

  • I could have told you that.

  • Christmas tree draws complaints.

  • Pig Man, not a super hero.

  • Carl King has too much free time on his hands.

  • Our trolls aren't this bad.

  • Help, I've fallen and I can't get up.

  • My misanthropic side says Sharia law for you buddy.

  • Schools aren't doing what parents are supposed to do.

  • Good bye Port Asbestos

    And finally,

  • Lassie go get the Fire Department! Now!!!!

    Have a great weekend!!!

withholding federal housing vouchers that could benefit 50,000 homeless

Don't try to please me, I hate popular music. Fake country and otherwise, and when it comes to Christmas music, it better be Mel singing about his nuts or Bing or Burl or some other old dead guy.

She was "explaining" the need for brains... it's a cool and creepy scene, but ultimately a disservice to the zombie universe, I think. They're not supposed to "know" anything. They're dead. They eat. That's all.

Because I'm a jerk, sometimes when people say "it's a shame that we have kids going hungry in this country when we have ...... blah, blah, blah (billionaires, a military, guns, whatever it is they don't like, etc), I say "no, we don't have kids going hungry. Actually the problem is that most of them are big, fat asses. So fat that they have health problems".

They get really mad at me and tell me that childhood hunger is a big issue. I tell them it isn't and invite them to tell me how many kids die of hunger, to name me one instance that doesn't involve parental neglect because the parents are sociopaths or dope addicts, where a child starved to death just because they couldn't buy food.

They think for 8 tenths of a second and then tell me that you don't have to starve to death to be hungry. I tell them I agree, most of the big fat asses I know are hungry all the time, but that there is even a malnourishment problem in the country, other than one arising from poor eating choices.

Then they tell me it's because healthy foods are too expensive. I ask them what the cost of water is versus Coca-Cola. What is the cost of a bag of Doritos versus a bag of carrots.

Then they call me a dick. And I say "Yes, I'm a dick. But you can see I'm correct, yes?"

Yes. I will accept that there are other types of "zombies" out there. Namely, live humans that have had their higher brain functions destroyed (eg, the 28 Days Later version), and if you want to suggest they can think and learn, I'll allow it.

But if you are a reanimated corpse, no matter how you got reanimated, you can't think. You just eat. I will even accept the theorizing that occurred in Romero's mall movie. The living thought they must be congregating toward the mall because of some vestige of memory that still exists in there. Otherwise....

Hell, I doubt there is more than a handful of holidays I haven't been actually "hungry" at some point in the day, I'm hungry every normal day, and I've always "missed a meal." My giant sons have always refused breakfast, were they "starving?" No.

The nearest problem place near me is Trenton. There is bus service to many shopping centers with grocery stores. There is also a very large farmers' market that sells good stuff in the growing season for low prices, but attracts mainly suburbanites. Go figure. I also believe NJ has some sort of transportation subsidy, but Trentonians are always able to get to the mall, so why is the shoprite (across the street) not accessible?

The thing is, I got a fix-it ticket for a tail light earlier in the week. It was a loose tail light bulb. It worked fine as soon as I messed with it a bit. The ticket was issued on Tuesday night. The cop said it would be fine if I have the mechanic sign the ticket today. I may be late in getting the ticket back to the court, however, despite what the state trooper told me.

Worst-possible-case scenario: They haul me away and I'm never seen again. Should this come to pass, I intend to go all Antonio Gramsci while I rot behind bars. I've been avoiding the dragnets for the last half of this week and reading this blog as I await my fate. Please know that the posts and comments will make it into my writings.

Should I get access to the Internet, I'll encode my DIN in here, somewhere. Be on the lookout. Once you see this, you must help me to smuggle my book out of the prison for all the world to read.

220 Last night, Tucker played a montage of various MSNBC and CNN talking heads falling all over themselves trying to make Nancy Pelosi's feeble impeachment remarks the other day sound like a cross between The Gettysburg Address and Shakespeare's Henry V's "Band of Brothers" speech.

Now, I know they all get the talking points, but I'd always assumed that since they have a hive mind, they would all say the same thing anyway,

But this was so egregious and laughably false that it's obvious they were told exactly what to say and how to say it.

Lawrence O'Donnell was the worst, invoking Nancy's "Catholic faith--which she has devoutly followed since she was a little girl." Yeah, sure.

    .....

What's left for the parents to do?

I asked a lady customer that a few months back during conversation. I told her they ought to send me one or two of those kids and I'd raise them if their parents aren't going to feed them, educate them, buy them clothes or school supplies, buy them presents for Christmas or even freaking love them.

I won't even take the tax "refund" slush fund payment for my hard work of banging without a rubber.

I'll be happy to teach a kid how to read, do arithmetic without a cell phone, clean gutters, mow a yard, change oil in the truck, raise chickens, shoot a gun, study the Bible, recite the Constitution, wash clothes, cook a grilled cheese, saw a board. Shit they might need to know some day and might make a decent human out of them.

All the schools do is feed them both food and liberal theology and turn 'em loose to f*ck, steal, fight and turn out another generation of slack ass bastards.

She looked at me pretty weird after that.

Elvis had a great voice, boundless charisma and good looks, and by all accounts acted like a gentleman most of the time.
But his manager--in addition to ripping him off--always demanded a bigger cut from songwriters. This ensured that Elvis had to record mostly second-rate material.
That's why--outside of the hits--I have little use for him.

259 I remember when I had my abusive husband thrown out of our home - wow, has it been 30 years already - and with a baby and a 4 year old, I refused to get welfare.

After I bought diapers, formula, and baby food for my son, my 4 year old daughter and I would have about $20 for groceries each week. Peanut better and jelly, mac and cheese, oatmeal were our staples.

We would make a game out of it, trying to be creative with that $20.

One time when we were in the grocery check out line, I saw steaks, crap cereal, and all sorts of good food loaded up in the cart ahead of us.

    They paid with food stamps.

    God almighty, was I angry.

Didn't point it out to my daughter at the time, but maybe I should have.

I must have said something to her at some point though, because when I mentioned the incident to her a few weeks ago, she remembered it.

But she added (paraphrasing), "you should have gotten food stamps, too. You were entitled to them. We could have been malnourished. That may not have been the most responsible choice on your part"

She got an earful from me.

No, no, NO. If I can provide for my family, why take welfare? Ugh.

Pumpkin spice? I don't mind it. This time of year, lots of things are "pumpkin spice" flavored, but I suppose what you are getting at is, why pumpkin "spice." Why not just pumpkin? Of if you want to be more specific, just call it Thanksgiving flavored.

I am kind of a car snob and got "stuck" with a Kia when I was traveling. First time driving one and I was very impressed. To make sure it was not a fluke I started picking them out of the aisle. Remain impressed.

Was thinking of getting one, leasing, instead of renting when I am working and am having a difficult time figuring out why not to. Aside from the car snob thing.

When you add in the 10 year warranty it gets even harder.

The Sorento is a great car. I am tempted to consider the Stinger except it is not reasonable for what I want it for.

I watched a documentary about Tony Kiritsis recently. This was an incident from the 70s, when Tony held a shotgun (trigger was wired to go off if the cops tried to take him out) to Richard Hall's head for 3 days.

It was all filmed, as he walked down the street, got in a cop car and drove home. They let him do a press conference, with cops everywhere, and in the documentary they had retired officers talking about what their roles were, and what they were going to do, depending on the situation.

In the end, everybody lived, and Tony was found not guilty by reason of insanity... although they held him for about 10 years, because he refused to cooperate with the whole psych exam sham.

Point being, nobody on the force that day had any prior experience with such a thing, and yet everybody... EVERYBODY acted with professionalism and frankly, humanity.

I don't think cops are even remotely capable of such actions today. When they're not trained to use brute force, even when it's not necessary, they're trained to coddle real actual bad guys.

Oh I agree with everything you wrote. The snob thing is not so much about brand but about certain capabilities. I prefer bigger engines and the things that make the cars go fast, turn tight, and stop quick. I prefer to have surplus capacity in these areas. It is easier to find those things in some brands.

At the same time it does seem that more manufacturers are doing more, successfully, with smaller engines and technology so it may be a good time to update my assumptions.

Ford's relationship to KIA is that they had owned an interest in it at one time, but then tried to buy it outright in 1998--but were beaten by Hyundai.

Hey! This'll be of interest for all you Scotch-heads out there:

Laphroaig's got a Limited Edition blend for the Holiday's called -

    Laphroaig Santa's Cask

And get this...the scotch is finished in barrels used to contain peppermint syrup!

Apparently, it's excellent. With ratings of 9.8-10 out of 10.

    Some blurbs:

"...takes the rich and spicy, Christmas Pudding fruitiness of Laphroaig Lore and adds cool burst of peppermint that sent this reviewer over the moon.

You'll will have been a very good girl or boy, indeed, if you're toasting Christmas with Laphroaig's Santa's Cask."

"...who knew the intense peat flavors of Laphroaig would match so well with peppermint. This one has it all. It's like a bonfire at the North Pole with bacony, sweet, roasted elves, fruits, spice, and cooling blast of peppermint..."

"...Introducing your new favorite scotch, or at the very least, one of your all-time top five favorites..."

Anyway, there you go, scotch people.

Time for a walk. Be back later.

397 "We do a massive disservice to kids by teaching them that car loans are
normal. Buy cheap and make a car "payment" to yourself just like you
have to pay for a loan. Repeat until you have enough for your next car.
    Never stop the habit.

    ..
It honestly depends. A car loan on a new econobox from a good maker - one with cheap insurance and good reliability - which you then drive for 10 - 15 years with a known maintenance track record can be a life changing event.

I have spent my entire working life watching people who were trying to claw their way out of poverty shoot themselves in the dick by driving shitboxes that break down and empty their savings, throttle their careers, or even cost them their jobs.

Similarly, I have watched a lot of middle class people struggle with the consequences of buying slightly more expensive but still shit cars; used stuff with $4k of overdue repairs, teutonic stuff they can't afford parts for, or utter crap flash-in-the-pan domestic models of the sort that clog junkyards before they're 1- years old.

Kids need to be taught how to maximize their auto dollars for their specific application. Saving depreciation on a good model with modest miles is no longer a wholy safe bet, because so few drivers actually know how to maintain their vehicle. An eye-popping percentage of millenials do things like pull into parking spots and stop the car by putting it into park while still moving, dicking around putting it into neutral coasting on the highway, etc. That's on top of the usual disregard for routine service.

399 Here's an interpretation of "one in five struggle with hunger":

They got this number by evaluating how many people are receiving some kind of food-related help. So, how many kids are receiving free or reduced lunches? How many families receive food stamps? Etc.

So people receiving, from others, the means to feed themselves are "struggling with hunger" even though they are eating.

They are solid cars from my experience if your requirements are basic reliable transportation with a long warranty.2015 Hyundai Elantra-- no problems, bought it for a couple of my kids to drive during their college years, bumper-to-bumper warranty and 5yr road side assistance will end just after the second kid graduates. (he couldn't have a car on campus until his junior year, his sister was driving it before that). Timing chain, not a timing belt, which is nice. He/we've taken it on 500 mile drives and it's quite comfortable. Not a sports car, which is fine if you don't need a sports car. Paid ~13,500 new, but then another ~500 for a spare and jack..... wasn't standard on the base model.

2018 Hyundai Elantra-- Same, no problems, daughter bought it when she graduated because she liked driving the other Elantra so much. Warranty will last her through the Masters program she'll start next year and her first few years working and be paid off by then. 14,000 new and it came with the spare (doughnut) and jack.

2017 Kia Optima- my older daughter bought that when her husband totaled her Kia Forte (older than your 5 year window, but a reliable trouble free car). That has had some issues with the tail lights, and door handles on the passenger side breaking. But it is a very roomy practical sedan for a family with a couple of kids with car seats.

My ex-inlaws have bought a couple of Hyundais and like them as well, liked an Elantra they had and got a Santa Fe.

405 Anyone else have a problem with the -let's get kids desensitized to NSA monitoring of everything we do--- Elf on the freaking shelf?
Grandaughter's teacher had one in the classroom. I told the granddaughter to point out that the Elf is basically a tattle-tale which is frowned upon at the school. Also, she needed to tell little Stinky the Elf that 'snitches get stiches' and that Stinky's policy should be that they 'didn't see nothin'.
Just like the one at her home, where I'd put a little sign on the evil thing declaring 'I didn't see nothin''
