Saturday Gardening And Puttering Thread, Cozy Edition [KT]

NorLights2.jpg

Hello, gardeners, putterers, photographers and friends. Above is a photo of northern lights from Jake Holenhead, from Northern Alberta or the Northwest Territories, taken some years back. We will feature more of these later. But today, we are going indoors for the rest of this thread.

Christmas Decorations Have you put up Christmas decorations yet?

The First Family is celebrating their third Christmas in the White House. This year's theme, "The Spirit of America," is a tribute to the traditions, customs, and history that make our Nation great. Designed by First Lady Melania Trump, the White House decorations celebrate the courageous individuals who have shaped our country and kept the American spirit alive.

Christmas at the Vice President's Home

Larro's Christmas Cactus has bloomed.

This plant is 2 years old, and always indoors back by breakfast nook on north side windows.

ccactuss.jpg

Christmas cacti can live for a long time and are sometimes handed down in families for 100 years. My cousin (the one with the geraniums in her basement) has one that has been handed down in her family, and she has given starts to other family members.

This video discusses how to tell Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Cacti apart, and how to keep them healthy.

Other indoor gardening

JQ sent the following pre-Christmas update:

Holiday greetings, fellow gardeners!

I managed to keep this poinsettia alive for a whole year and now it's
beginning to bloom again. When purchased, the bracts were solid, deep
red. It's been about 3 weeks since muted color began to appear on some
larger leaves (not sure if they will ultimately turn completely) and
about 2 weeks since the little, newer leaves started turning red-- first
the veins, then whole leaf. I'm so excited about it-- never done this
before!

There are all kinds of instructions online for 'forcing' rebloom but I
haven't done anything special, other than repotting and severe pruning
when it went dormant in ~February, then moving it outside in late spring
to a half-sunny spot. Once night temps dipped to 50F, I brought it back
indoors to live by the south-facing sliding glass door. The floor gets
very cold there, so putting it on a plant dolly probably saved it's life.

Thank you very much for hosting the garden threads, KT-- they're a
weekly dose of inspiration!

prebloom.jpg

Lirio 100 has a lemon tree:

This is a small Meyer lemon. It was outdoors all summer, had few flowers in when it was kept in the sun. It's now indoors under LED grow lights and is covered with flowers. A little surprising!

Seed Catalogs

I have received catalogs from Burpee and Pinetree. Anybody else got an interesting catalog? Buying any gifts for gardeners, maybe so they will grow something for you?

U.S. Botanical Garden

We mentioned the U.S. Botanical Garden back in November. Sharon got a chance to visit:

Was in DC for Thanksgiving and had a chance to visit the Botanic Gardens on the Mall. Christmas decorations were just starting to go up. They have this fabulous miniature train that runs around and through the garden for Christmas. So much to see, but I love the orchids. Never ceases to amaze me that nature produces such spectacular colors and diversity just to attract birds and bugs.

Technical difficulties posting photos. Check back.

Here they are:

5 Seen the Northern lights a couple of times. Best was when I was in Calgary for the Winter Olympics. Me and my brother headed out to the car and I noticed a weird glow in the sky. Yep, that was it. And all the local newspapers talked about it the next morning.

6 Contrary to common thinking , lumber needs to be stored straight, leaning, angled, not supported on a pile even a day it gets bowed and twisted. The sun beating on 1 side will dry out that side warping it because the opposite is moist.

10 Lovely pictures. I'm trying to summon energy to put up some Christmas decorations. Last year I punted on indoor decorations and only put up a few lights outside. This year I'm trying to do some catch up cleaning, maybe I can catch up enough before Christmas to then mess with setting up the tree and so on. Not decorating until quite close to Christmas and then leaving things up a long time, sometimes unit after the SB is a bit of a family tradition.

13 Oddly enough, when I was building our house, when I had to make walls, I didn't get the sills and header boards from the lumber yard. Far too green and thick.
But the Home Depot a mile away had indoor, air-conditioned wood that was shrunk to final dimension.
Learned that after the first stairwell... which still groans sometimes with changes in humidity.

It can't be Christmas at the White House without the traditional-

Mao Zedong ornaments on the trees.

Doesn't Orangemanbad respect any of the necessary changes to America's Winter Equinox Festival which our lord and savior Barack Hussein Obama left to us?

18 No Christmas decorations yet but will probably get a tree this year. When I first moved into my house I was all into decorating but I'm afraid the thrill is already gone.

19 I got one I haven't seen before. Vermont Bean Seed. It does have more than just beans, but it has a fine variety of beans.

Vermont Bean used to have a LOT of interesting beans. They are part of a conglomerate now. Still have good seeds, though.

If I recall correctly, in their small flower section, they once listed days to bloom.

I actually have a gardening thread issue, which I may have brought up before.

I got two baby holly trees a couple of months ago. Little foot-high things that went into the ground.

In the first few weeks, they shot out tons of new foliage and just about doubled in size.

Since then, nada. Is this because the arborist gave them speed to get them going and now they're down to their normal growth rate (12-24" per year according to the all-wise internet)?

I look at them and I wonder if they're secretly brain-dead but they have some pulse that's keeping them green.

42 Ooooh... Poinsettia made the thread! Thanks, KT! Quick work too, I just took the pic yesterday.

Since I'm so impatient, I bought another poinsettia for the table just to be sure of having full blooms for Christmas.

Posted by: JQ at December 07, 2019 02:17 PM (gP/Z3)

44
And poinsettias! That's another one! Grandma had one that was so healthy it was taking up the whole side of the house, so the gardeners had to cut it back so you could walk by. It used to be a red riot. Since then (two years?) it's been a handful of frail, five-foot twigs.

45 I have to watch the cactus video. Wife always kills our cacti.

46 We've been getting our workouts on non-gym days by trimming trees in our yard. With the reaching sawing, lopping, sealing, and hauling off the trimmings, it's a good workout!

Because of the drought this summer, our lawn was brown throughout July, August, and September. (Good news was that it didn't need mowing.) Now in December, it's as green as in the spring and looks great. Such is life in Texas.

Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at December 07, 2019 02:23 PM (S+f+m)

47 @JQ...A relative grows Poinsettia commercially. The plants will not turn red unless they are kept in the dark. His greenhouses have automated shutters that keep the plants in the dark about a month before he begins to ship in November. Since your plant looks very healthy and happy you might try keeping the blind shut during the day. Some people have luck putting them in a closet during the day for a week or so to force the color change. I used a large cardboard box the last time I forced the color, but alas now we have doggehs that like to munch house plants, so no more Poinsettias for us.

Posted by: Shanks for the memory at December 07, 2019 02:23 PM (TdCQk)

48 35: I have no expertise with hollies, but my understanding is that very few plants grow actively when there are fewer than about ten hours of sunlight per day (those blasted winter annual weeds being among the obvious exceptions). My suspicion is that you'll see more growth once the days start lengthening again.

50 The song birds have been especially melodic lately. We haven't had the sustained cold temps that bring the 'winter-only' juncos, sparrows and finches down from the Blue Ridge. I put up a couple of feeders, one for suet and one for safflower seed. Between them, they attract about every species of bird in our area that doesn't require a body of water.

57 God bless our President and First Lady. I love how Mrs. Trump has decorated the White House. It's beautiful.
Today, I have a special garden project. Every year I teach my 5th grade students about decomposition by making a box filled with dirt and earthworms. The students bring small pieces of fruits and vegetables, plus some leaves to feed to worms. I take a picture of it every day so they can see the progression on the decomposition. The box changes a lot in two weeks. Besides what the worms do, we get some pretty fabulous molds growing. The kids will write about what happened on their assessment next week.
I brought the box home and will dump the contents into my garden. It's fairly warm and sunny out so the worms should be able to dig in the dirt before it gets too cold. Great for my garden! I love this project!

59 Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return. -- Genesis 3:17-19

75 The Baker Creek catalog arrived this week and now we're drooling over heirloom 'maters and such.

The winter garden is still going strong, although last week's deluge (4.5") hammered the Napa cabbages and I had to cut back more leaves than I wanted, so maybe no kimchi size heads this year. I'm harvesting radishes, carrots, lettuces, green onions, bok choy, parsley, kale, chard, snow pea tendrils and the broccoli rabe will soon be ready.

Oh and pots of naturalized Cymbidiums that live in the live oak under story during the growing season are ready to bloom.

I picked a ton of olives that are fermenting/curing in the utility room and a boatload of Meyer lemons. The Cara Cara navels and grapefruit are beginning to color up, so maybe we'll get some homegrown citrus before a hard freeze arrives...which is usually mid-Dec though Mid-Feb in our neck of the woods.

However, we're still 3-4 weeks behind the usual growing timeline here in the northeastern San Joaquin Valley with overnight mid 50 temps, although we did have a cold snap with light frost in mid Nov...but day temps quickly returned to the high 60's, so who knows what the heck is going on...and it's raining again...but we try not to whine about rain in the Central Valley.

Melanie looks lovely in that video and just exudes style. I like the Pence video too and it was nice that they showed a Nativity scene.

She's gorgeous, and I love those videos. I watched the 2017 and 2018 videos on YouTube.

I can't find any videos like that from the Obama White House. There are news stories, and vids of things like Michelle and Barry giving "Merry Christmas" speeches and there's one of the traditional tree delivery (by Clydesdales), but Obama's White House didn't do these cool vids.

87 Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return. -- Genesis 3:17-19

90 If I remember my solar weather correctly, an inactive sun like we have right now makes for not much Aurora.

If you go to this page:

https://tinyurl.com/ybzbgzts

and scroll down some there is an animated map of where the Aurora Borealis is (probably) visible. Right now the only people who might be seeing it are Lapps and their reindeer. It is way, way up north.

I don't recall where you live, but most things do not put on growth this time of year. (If you live in a warm weather climate like Florida, I assume you wouldn't be growing hollies?)

96 Had to come out of Lurkdom to say I am so glad you have linked a Garden Answer video! Laura is awesome, and she and Aaron do a fantastic job with their videos. Well worth checking out other videos, they have a lovely property

97 Nothing like a ride out on the mesa where all the citrus groves are around the first of February. The fragrance is incredible. And my patio tomato in a large pot is coming along nicely. Around a dozen tomatoes of various sizes. I spotted a small jackrabbit by the shed yesterday probably wishing I would plant them in the ground.

98 I, like Shanks, got my Baker Creek Seed Catalog and have turned over nine pages with new things I want to try. It is by far my favorite for exotic seeds. They aren't all winners but with our brutal summer I have to do something to keep myself amused.

99 So much for putting up Christmas lights today, it's raining hard.

Maybe tomorrow.

Last weekend didn't get above freezing, or would've done it then.

First-world problems, right?

100 My gal and I have managed to grow an old Poinsettia from last year. It got real big outside in a big pot.

We have been covering it with a big trash can to limit it's daily light.

Getting redder everyday. Very pretty.

101 From Idaho's Treasure Valley (Boise area): We had snow on Sunday, about an inch, but it all melted right off, and this afternoon we're back to rain. This week was mild, most nights even above freezing.

We got rid of more leaves this week (but there's always more to go). Some sycamore went to the trash, and a pile to a downtown leaf dumpster the city set up. A pile of sweet gum got shredded and put in the leaf bins - those will become next year's compost ingredients.

We got the Christmas lights up, wound around our 2 front pillars, and around the front door. And we bought the Christmas tree - decorating starts tonight.

I do have a poinsettia, and I did read the WikiHow on how to get it to bloom at Christmas - but my schedule's too erratic, and it's hard to remember to put a box over it and take it off, on a schedule. Plus, I was doing more damage breaking off branches while getting the box on and off. So we put it in the dimmest room in the house, that we only use occasionally, and we'll see if it blooms any time this winter. If not, we'll put it in the dim room earlier next fall and see if that does it.

I got a letter from our own S.Lynn, sharing tomato seeds with me! I have to write back and see if she wants fingerling potato starts, or mini-larkspur seeds, or any of the seeds I have extras of. (She shared her granola recipe with me, too - yum!)

No catalogs yet - I'm wondering where they are. I want to be dreaming by the fire with a potent potable and a pile of seed catalogs sometime soon!

102 Good evening, morons. Those orchids are beautiful.

I like the WH and VP videos. The Obamas used to do HGTV specials, and I particularly liked one when the girls didn't want to get up for the tree delivery by Clydesdale, so Mrs. O invited her little nephew who absolutely loved everything.

My garden coolness of the day was a hawk landing - missed a squirrel - and then standing there a moment before taking off. Other than that, the frost-killed hostas are nearly dried enough to be cleared by hand.

I was looking for a terra cotta pot 6" or taller, but no one carries them. I bought squash and tomato seeds at the closing Kmart; I've had good luck with "old" Ferry-Morse seeds. If they don't germinate,

Hi, Pat! This sounds great. I always get catalogs in March, which seems so late.

Hi, NP! It's just not the season for clay pots. If you can hold off until after New Year, many variety stores begin carrying "seed starter kits" (jiffy-pots, bagged soil and the like, even some seeds) in January.

Clay pots arrive a bit later, usually, but you might find them early at WalMart?

Tomatoes don't seem to mind being transplanted, so you can at least get them started in peat pots if you can't find clay right away.

Good luck!

Posted by: JQ at December 07, 2019 09:04 PM (gP/Z3)

106 @Naughty Pine...try Michael's or any big craft supply store...they usually stock terracotta pots to hold hand crafted Christmas trees and table decorations.
