A Moron's Thanksgiving ONT

TV Dinner.jpg

Hopefully y'all are too logy and lethargic with L-tryptophan to expect deep content, so here is a light Thanksgiving dump.

Tonight's ONT is brought to you by Chris Collinsworth shilling for a 3lb tub of beef taco filling in pidgen Spanish:

8 Previously, on Ace of Spades....

335 290 F-I-L was deeply sleeping. Not in a coma, but won't wake up. His breathing is irregular, too. M-I-L is holding up well as is Mrs IMG.

Planning meeting with funeral director tomorrow morning. Thanksgiving dinner in the afternoon.

Sounds ominous, IMG. My condolences to you.

Thank you everyone. I share this because the fine folks here are always there for each other.

AOP, the official word is terminal diagnosis, but no way of knowing when. Could be days, could be weeks or more.

As to the meeting, doing it now as Mrs IMG has to have her ankle repaired and surgery is next Tue (previously repaired in July, but some tendon anchors gave way, so re-repair needed). So I have an alibi for putting up the Christmas tree 2 weeks(!) before Thanksgiving, too.

Mrs want to be in on the service and casket decisions. They already have a plot.

Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at November 28, 2019 10:02 PM (di1hb)

9 Dishes washed. The lovely Mrs. asleep. Skyped with 2 year old granddaughter. #4 son just set another drink in front of me.

Ahhhhhh.

Posted by: Tonypete at November 28, 2019 10:03 PM (Y4EXg)

10 I have to say, I didn't imagine that airing my family annoyances on the afternoon thread would lead to a lengthy conversation about surprise anal--but I guess I should've known better. Certain of you did make me feel better, so thanks to those who responded.

79 I had a very unusual Thanksgiving feast.

As is custom, my father and stepmother hosted. She is Italian. A couple of weeks ago when we were making final plans, my middle daughter spoke up and said she would really rather have her authentic and delicious spaghetti and meat balls than turkey.
I gave her the Mark I Mod 0 Parental "Are you out of your mind?" look, but unexpectedly the rest of the family agreed that those meatballs are really, really good and we haven't had them for a while.

So we had traditional turkey AND spaghetti and meatballs. I had a little of both, but I'm still not sure how I feel about this.

Okay, know how I feel. NO STUFFING??!!! I've kept my cool until now, but I'm going to have to go make some this weekend. I've been robbed.

Motorcycle Wreck / Ankle Surgery, Oct. '98.

Two incisions, five screws. (they used some of the loose ones up in my haid).

About 99.8% pain free these days. But that 0.2%, when it hits? Instant "Full Stop", and that's non-negotiable.

So count me in on the "Prayers for the Ankleites" denomination.

I posted this at the end of CBD's morning rant thread, before I realized there was a new thread above it:

"Thank you all. I'm thankful for the 20 years I had with my son. I'm also thankful for the AOSHQ. God bless."

My brother and his wife, and my late brother's wife stopped by unexpectedly today. We didn't want visitors, but we're glad they showed up. They brought food, fond memories, and loving comfort.

Someday, when I'm able, I'll share more about my son. I don't know what I'll say, but maybe it will be of some value to others who have to deal with mental health issues or suicide among their loved ones.

For now, I'll wish you all a blessed Thanksgiving, or what's left of it, and thank you again for your kind thoughts.

112 Troll level: Inspired
Today was the 100th annual Turkey Bowl, the yearly rivalry game between two area Catholic high schools, the LaSallians of Calvert Hall and the Jesuits of Loyola. It's not Friday Night Lights by any means, but it is a great local tradition here in Baltimore. The game was held in Unitas Stadium at Towson University, and the 11,000 seat venue was basically full. The good guys won, and as fans were leaving the stadium, the kids from the Calvert Hall school newspaper were handing out papers with a huge headline "Six In A Row! Calvert Hall Wins Turkey Bowl!". I suppose if Loyola had carried the day they would have left them in the back of a truck, but they didn't and the kids were ready to make sure that every fan had a souvenir of the game-especially the Loyola ones.

My stepmother says that the family dog loved pasta and sauce, but being a big family, people had first claim on the good stuff. When they ran short, they opened a can of Chef Boyardee and gave that to the dog.

171 It was a strange year.

For many years, I always worked on TG at a sports bar that insisted on opening. My regulars would bring me leftovers from their own meals and were kind of like a surrogate family for me.

When my daughter was born, I thought it was important to spend TG with her, and did for two years before her mother and I split. Then we alternated TGs with her with her mother. and I'd cook for her and me, but I'd make everything, big turkey, stuffing, squash casserole, mash taters n' gravy, sweet potatoes with pecan topping, green beans, deviled eggs and a pie or two. We'd watch Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and sports and eat. Then we'd eat leftovers over and over all week, because when you are a bachelor an a kid, you don't care. When I didn't have her, I worked.

Then my SIL started hosting TG, and stole that tradition from us. So this year, my SIL got sick, so no family meal, Little was at her moms, so no cooking. Job scheduled me off.

I didn't know what to do with myself. Even the church didn't have a get together like usual. It was a scary sneak peek at the empty nest syndrome I've got coming in a few years.

Books have been my friend all my life as well ( I dislike Kindle intensely and much prefer the feel of a book in my hands). The kindness of reading to him from this book in his last hours shows what a wonderful sister you were to him. God bless you both.

Steyer made his money in fossil fuels and is now on a virtue-signalling kick. So basically he's repudiating everything that made him rich out of some weird guilt complex.

Bloomberg's money flowed through his control of terminals relating to the stock exchanges. Not sure on the details, but very similar to Zuckerberg insofar as getting there first and establishing a de facto monopoly.

Bloomberg was a senior managing director at Salomon Brothers, and had a brilliant idea that morphed into the terminals that make him most of his money.

But that doesn't make him a foreign policy or tax specialist...it just makes him rich.

Not really. If he earned it himself or from a family business, like Don Jr, Eric, or Ivanka, then all is good, let 'er rip.

But Hunter got all of his riches, 100% of them, because his daddy was an influential government leader that could be bought, and absolutely no other reason. Or more specifically because his "donors" gave him money because of his government daddy.

That's just wrong.

And Morons, I would wager heavily, would agree..

325 On the Shelby documentary.

A former boss, Mr. Tommy Hamon was a very close friend of Shelby's. They'd both campaigned many a Mexican Grand Prix, competing against one another, but becoming fast friends in the process.

Tommy's Dad owned the Texas City Ford business, bearing his name. Had one of those 1st Gen Ford GT's on the showroom floor, in the late '60s.

His son, Tommy Jr. (the friend of Shelby's), inherited the dealership. And in '06, parked HIS brand new Ford GT in the EXACT spot that his late Dad's '60s GT had sat, right there in the showroom.

That 2006 Ford GT is one of only TWO in which Carrol Shelby had signed the dashboard.

Mr. Shelby signed no few hundreds of Cobra dashboards. And some 1st Gen '60s GTs.

But the 2005/06 series. Just those two.

It has, shall we say, appreciated just a bit over the years.

327 If I had my money's no object car collection, I'd have fully restored early 60's GM compacts in the collection.

Not that they were great cars, but they were interesting and they actually took chances with new ideas.

Buick Special - V6 engines or the 215 aluminum block V8 that had a high HP per C.I. ratio and was lightweight to boot.

Olds F-85 Jetfire - Turbocharged 215 with a 1/1 CI to HP ratio

Pontiac Tempest - Rear mounted transmission and transaxle giving it an almost 50/50 front/rear weight distribution.

Corvair - If only they'd used fully jointed rear axles instead of the swing axles.

The Chevy II (later Nova) came along because for all their new ideas, consumers were buying the very basic Ford Falcons by a shitload more than they were buying GM compacts. The Novas also fit a 327 nicely for those so inclined.

Both the Cobra or the Jag XKE will result in narrowly similar acquisition of cromulent crumpettes, but of very slightly different persuasions.

You wanna go brassy, sassy n' redneck-ish girl, you get the Cobra with honkin' side-pipes and a "tramp-stamp" on the trunk to match the one on her lower back.

Want the "Cosmo Girl?" Why, drive the Jag, of course. But you'll need to brush upon your Baccarat, fine dining, wine and martini-ing skills.

None of which any of you should bother with, in the first place.

A proper Moron just drives whatever the hell he wants, and the rest of the pieces fall into place, or not, whatever.

If my Mazda 5 or F-150 do it for a lass, fine. Turns her off? Even BETTER!

Any woman so shallow as to decide based *only* on a vehicle, is just a wee bit too high-maintenance, right outta the gate, for me.

Like a lot of GM's new technology, they're riddled with problems and by the time they get around to fixing them, they punt soon after.

Corvette V-8 under the hood, and suspension to match.

Bolt up some Super Brakes and a four-row aluminum radiator, and you're damn near in Race Track Assassin territory, from the start.

Just needs a bit of a cage inside, and very well bolstered seats. Five point harness.

But keep the power windows, AC, tilt and cruise, and at least a good radio.

Correct on all.

But I've seen the upgrade to the Hydra-Matic, a far more robust driveshaft and firmer mounting bushings.

The VALUE is in the IRS rear suspension hardware. Nothing else like it then existed for a front-drive powertrain.

So, while perhaps the modern 'Vette small block would completely overwhelm this system, it was perfectly suited to bringing a stodgy late '60s platform, into handling abilities not far removed from a year-peer BMW, Mercedes, Alfa or other Euro tight-handling sedan of the times.

American has always had the engineers to do such things.

You just solved a long-time mystery.

Early '90s car show.

Chevy Chevette, heavily breathed upon 289-ish small block, most visible parts MSD Racing valve covers, distributor and the like.

Sure as hell, running the Tempest IRS rear end system. But a larger and more robust version than I had ever seen before then.

I think you nailed it, but memory fades and I've no photos, alas.

The thing was set up for Rally and Auto Cross. I remember that much, at least.

The extra costs of building the more sophisticated cars combine with not enough buyer interest means you get the Chevy II and you'll like it.

The Olds F-85 Jetfire was the first mass produced turbocharged American car, but they didn't have the intercooling designs nailed yet, and buyers didn't like the trouble of adding the water/alcohol mix many times to keep the heads from overheating.

The Tempest drive train was also something even the Corvette didn't have until the C-5 came out in 1996. But even with the money saved with the "Hay baler" 4 cyl which were the right half of a 389 block, the bean counters figured the lower cost of the conventional drive train would sell just as well.

Where GM really didn't know what they had was with the 215 aluminum V8 which Mickey Thompson bought the unused blocks for his racing boats and the British saw them and took a liking to it and bought the blueprints from Buick to build their long lived 3.5 Rover V8 which was in production until the mid 90s

The Brit's "Grand Slam" bomb, at some 22,000 lbs, and an aerodynamic shape modeled on the M-2, .50 BMG round, was said to have achieved "trans-sonic" speeds in it's fall to the Sub Pens at Brest, France.

Best the Halifax Bombers could do with the Tallboy, was around the 13,000 ft. level. But had those bombs been delivered from 20,000 ft?

Then yeah, Supersonic would have been not only likely, but a certainty.

I'm not going to dig into Bing Fu, but the recent Red Bull high balloon jumper exceeded Mach 1, when his late 50s counterpart, only brushed up against Trans Sonic.

The difference, being altitude at drop.

A GPS guided Grand Slam would be a thing of beauty.

But we've got this and more, in the GPS guided, Fuel Air Explosive, MOAB bomb, deployed from the C-130, and not a USAF bomber.

Tally Ho!

438 Aerodynamic Drag is the ONLY limitation on the 32fps/sq'd formula for drop/distance/speed.

A skydiver in the "layout" position is going to fall at about 120 mph, balanced speed.

Same skydiver in the "Pike" position will be +/- 200 mph falling speed.

Not a matter of weight, but of shape and air-flow resistance.

Give a weight a shape known to achieve supersonic speeds, dropped from enough altitude?

It's gonna go supersonic, every time.

Had the Arc Light B-52 strikes have been delivered from 100,000 ft., vs 33,000 ft?

Those Mk. 82 "slick" bombs would've arrived a wee bit ahead of the sound of the wind howling around their fins.

If Baumgartner could break Mach 1 from that damn balloon, do NOT tell me that a Ballistic Form of 20x the weight, wouldn't have passed him up like Ted Kennedy's Oldsmobile overtaking the "Slow, Narrow Bridge" sign at Chappaquiddick.

Oh, and you Newtonians? "Weight" drives the final speed against aerodynamic resistance.

Not the initial speed of fall.

And "Pisa" was far too less tall an experiment, to prove or disprove this, from on high.

Mention Galelleo, Newton or Pisa, and I know you're long on B.S. and short of knowledge, from the start.

439 We have come here tonight to add our celebration to those which are going forward all over the world wherever allied Morons are fighting, in bars and with in-laws, on battlefields, on the high seas, and in the high, highest air. Always this annual festival has been dear to the hearts of the Hordian people. Always there has been that desire for Thanksgiving and food and alcohol, but mainly Valu-Rite, and never, I think has there been more justification, more compulsive need than now.

Nov 23, 1944 (as amended)

It is your day of Thanksgiving and that when we feel the truth of the facts which are before us: that in many years, the peaceful, peace-loving people of the The Moron Horde, with all the variety and freedom of their comments, in such contrast to the iron discipline which has governed other, many other, as they say, media. When we see that in these years, the Horde is in sober fact become the greatest military, naval, and air, and snark power in the world, with both friendship for friends and mockery for those who must be mocked, that I say to you in this time of ONT, is in itself a subject for profound thanksgiving.

440 Well now,

We still have "Thanks Giving" in spite of a decade of attempts from newly minted snowflakes and ensconced commie liberal arts professors from 3 decades ago to turn this into a genocide of the peaceful, non-violent, totally mis-understood..totally innocent earth loving
savages that greeted us on our arrival from Europe (which was already practicing slavery as taught to them by Muslims) part of the reason why the pilgrims left in the first place......BUT....I digress .....that the NATIVE AMERICAN home boys were such...well peaceful and so centered on their Karma of CO-existence that they slaughtered other tribes and bound the survivors to slavery within their own tribes......yet we gave them all casinos(after we turned them all into alcoholics which at the end of the day was a policy decision long before I was birthed and frankly......with all that money now..ya think they would have fixed at least....that?

White Guilt is a commie construct....ya all can go pound sand and have an extra slice of pumpkin pie on me.
I am very thankful to be an AMERICAN. NAI you play now-a-days to who will hand you more govt. cheese....no feather dances and war drums....cultures die on their own failures...and lack of will. History Baby....History

Huh.

I was at a "private" party some years ago when the state Public Service Commission, or most of them, played spoons (as in musical instruments). They were amazingly good, and one had a daughter who sang just like Patsy Cline. Best party ever.

Also, because of a lack of competence on the part of the Public Service Commissioners, South Carolina got the most expensive electricity in the entire USA.

486 So Mrs VIA was watching some show called 'The List' last night.

They claim that bad people avoid homes with American flags displayed, while looking for break-in opportunities.

Claiming that bad guys tend to think that those folk have a higher probability of being armed.

487 On this day in 1963 LBJ established the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination of President Kennedy. It is still being disputed today.

IMO, a cabal coverup report. Jerry Ford had a seat on the Warren Commission. Funny how he's the only unelected president in our history.

It's The Cabal all the way down, with the Deep State being a part of The Cabal (and not the other way around).

A centerpiece of light excessiveness should be a shrine/manger for the holey child, Greta St. Scold, with AOC as one of the donkeys.

498 Morning!

I've never Black Friday shopped before, so my first time for that is this morning.
My local ACE hardware sent me a 15% off coupon for anything under $30 today only, and I need a new snow shovel.
Living the good life today, baby.

499 Also, I got a letter from the SS office.

I get a 1.6% COLA next year. Hell, that's about what i got for a raise from the large multi-national I used to work for.

504 95 I don't like the Macy's parade. The way it's presented on tv, it isn't a real parade. It's a series of staged performances. And no horses. I like the Rose Bowl parade.

One of the things I miss about Los Angeles is the Christmas parade the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Hokey, wonderful old-fashioned parade and the horses and caballeros as well as the high school bands decamped on my street.

507 I have never shopped on Black Friday, either, but I have errands to run and if things aren't too crazy I may get in line if I see something. I am going to try and shop at real stores this year, also, and not rely on Amazon so much.

I saw a video on UTube of those parades back in the 50s-70s, I think. There were movie stars and celebrities and such in them. They did look fun.

Yes, down Hollywood Boulevard. it's a real tradition. The grand marshal is usually a beloved but has-been TV actor. The high school bands come from all over SoCal and are really wonderful.
