The Morning Rant: Calm Thanksgiving Edition

Rockwell pilgrems progress.jpg

Nothing to rant about this fine blustery day...

Pie is in the oven, the rest of the food is on schedule, the house is quiet for a little while longer, and the biggest question of the day is what cocktail with which to start the festivities.

Thank you all for being such loyal, energetic, combative and laugh-out-loud funny commenters this past year. It is a rare thing to find an on-line community that actually functions in the real world, yet you maniacs have created exactly that, and the support and camaraderie that you give each other is a testament to all of you (there is a request for a bit more of that below the fold).

So have a wonderful, peaceful (raucous if that's your style) Thanksgiving, full of joy and happiness and stuffing and cauliflower gratin and pork roast and yes, even turkey!

***

An occasional commenter told the ONT last night that he has had a terrible loss. Please take a moment and think of "Average Guy," and if you are so inclined, a prayer for him and his family.

I spent the morning preparing the turkey and dressing for my extended family. Tomorrow, my wife and I will spend the day preparing a pasta coma for her family, who will gather at our house on Saturday. There are just too many people to do them together.

Sunday, I hope will be a day of rest.

I used to tell people that life is like "three point climbing" ... it is good to have multiple holds as one climbs, so if one rock breaks, the others offer support. Ace of Spades and other internet connections have become viable extra lifelines these days, for the mental/spiritual support that is often more important than the physical needs.

(I learned "3 point climbing" once long ago, which was just having 3 secure/safety points as you make the next move to the next grip, but I may remember it wrong since I didn't find that in searching)

I hope for the best for those in Hong Kong, but there are several
factors that do not bode well for their future. Publius surely has a
broader perspective, but listening to Kyle Bass paints their future as
more dim.

For one thing much of their trade power has been
decentralized into China "proper" (if that's the right term). Plus the
huge input from the US into China made them prosper, and that is
changing direction now. And there are people/institutions now, that
can't get their money out of China ... so they want Trump to get some
deal, submit to China ... so they don't lose their money.

He's in the Hospice unit at the hospital. Nothing by mouth as they are concerned about swallowing reflex and stuff getting into his lung. He's sleeping non-stop unless they doe something that makes hum uncomfortable. He's wake just enough to swing, then drop right back off. IV hydration.

Staff is strongly discouraging any notion of home hospice. He can stay in the unit for 6 months.

Info from nursing staff. S-I-Ls and M-I-L there now. I'll get the Dr's skinny when I and Mrs IMG go visit.

101 I hope for the best for those in Hong Kong, but there are several

factors that do not bode well for their future. Publius surely has a

broader perspective, but listening to Kyle Bass paints their future as

more dim.

For one thing much of their trade power has been

decentralized into China "proper" (if that's the right term). Plus the

huge input from the US into China made them prosper, and that is

changing direction now. And there are people/institutions now, that

can't get their money out of China ... so they want Trump to get some

deal, submit to China ... so they don't lose their money.

I read an interesting article recently about business sentiment in China. It said that many Chinese businessmen now think the glory days of growth are over, and they won't be coming back. That could be a self-fulfilling prophecy and a real problem for the Chicoms.

A blessed Thanksgiving to all. Pray for our president, his family and his protection detail.

114 Trump is starving China of capital. He's also forcing a major re thinking of the Chinese economic paradigm with global companies. They are decreasing reliance of the Chinese supply chain, especially as the trade issues persist and the realties of our new tax code take hold. It really spells the end of the days of wine and roses for chine. Throw in Hong Kong and a younger generation who is casting off the old brainwashing of Communists and it's gonna get sporty.

But don't worry. Democrats will jump in to "repair" our relationship with China and ensure they steal our jobs back and use American largess to build a military to confront us.

161 We are also celebrating Friday, because our kids are in medicine and are working those $$weet holiday shifts, while Gramma and Grandpa watch the grandkids.

The kids have much nicer starter houses than we ever had, and for reasons better left unstated, they also have the grandparents to spoil their kids, which we did not!

When we get together at holidays and are counting our blessings, I always add "If the Democrats manage to crash our 401Ks before we kick the bucket, remember who paid the freight!"
This message meets with lukewarm acceptance, but hey, Paul Krugman might turn out to have been right - stranger things have happened (but not that many).

Demorats decades long MOST FAVORED TRADE STATUS for China, that also screwed our economy and jobs up. Tianamen square was also China flexing its new powers demorats bequeathed them.

So prayers for Average Guy and all who have lost children.
It's approaching two years since I lost my wife. The pain is significantly reduced but I still think about her every single day.

194 I have never heard that take before and would like to learn more. Where did you get that info?

David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed would be a good place to start.

The scenario sketched above, while entertaining, isn't all that accurate, BTW. The English did encourage the Anglo-Scottish borders to immigrate to Ireland in the 17th century as a counterbalance to the Irish Gael, but no forcing I don't think. The main driver for immigration from Ireland to the Americas was economic hardship, with religious and ethnic friction also playing a role. They did gravitate to the less-settled areas, but that is where the land was, and land ownership in the 18th century, before property tax, represented stability and independence in a way that it doesn't today. I don't know if there was ever a set policy of encouraging the Scotch-Irish to settle on the frontier, though I'm sure the authorities were pleased for multiple reasons that they usually did so.

+++All through my childhood the holiday dinners were always pretty late in the evening. When one sister married a French guy and started hosting meals, all of a sudden the noon hour was when food was served. For the past several years with new members added, others subtracted, we eat around 2. I think afternoon is better, just for the big cleanup time for one thing.

209 Thanks for the information Grey Fox, I will check out the book you mentioned.

Somewhat related:

I heard of a study of "difficult" babies, those that were fighters, criers, strugglers, and a follow up a few years later. One group studied had a famine in the intervening years and only the "difficult" babies survived.

On another note:

The turkey is in the oven. I repeat, the turkey is in the oven.

211 Happy Thanksgiving to all and prayers to Average Guy and Olddog. I have two sons - 25 and 30 y.o. I would be devastated.

I am thankful to have found this group of kindred spirits and for your sharing and your good humor. I hope to make it to a MoMeet this year if there is one in So. Cal.

Mrs AGiC is frantically baking and cooking and soon we'll be loading the car and braving the eastbound 91 or 10 depending on traffic to the glorious Inland Empire for dinner with her extended family. (yet another horde)

We're having a little 'weather' today here in 'The OC' but I know it's nothing compared to what many of you deal with every day in other parts of the country. Stay warm and safe.

Posted by: Anonymous Guy in Ca at November 28, 2019 01:49 PM (RcMUX)

212 Today is the day we mark Thanksgiving with the traditional pork crown roast, which will be cooked to perfection, hopefully, on the pellet grill.

The same pellet grill, I might add, that decided to eat its igniter a couple of days before it was needed to cook part of our grand feast.

Of course, I was able to get a new igniter but, we had a wonderful winter storm move in to CA so, I was out replacing the igniter in duck hunting weather.

Brought back some fond memories of yesterdecade, it did.

Truly, though, I am thankful to live in a wonderful country that has such a bountiful harvest that such fare is possible.

May all enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy the fact that Hillary is nacho president.

T-giving dinner today is nachos and beer, as it's just me here in DFW. On the bright side, got to see my mom and my kids in Michigan last week, and had nice visits with a number of people. Hopefully I won't be heading there anytime soon for a funeral.

215 I'm trying 2 new techniques for my turkey(s). First, I do bone in breasts, b/c there seems like a ton of waste w/whole birds. Mrs. Robin gave me a food blog article about dry brine turkey. Basically you salt the hell out of the birds, then prior to roasting slather w/maple syrup, butter and chili paste. Roast over a bed of quartered onions. I also have a dry brined/slathered turkey on my smoker.
Even if they're both disasters, we'll have enough sides to keep us fed.

219 Thanksgiving meal here will be late afternoon today, when everything is ready.

The Thanksgivings that I have the fondest memories of are the ones at my grandma's house. The women and children would gather there earlyish to finish food preparations. The men were out hunting, hopefully back by early afternoon for the meal. Usually they were. If their tags were already filled, they wouldn't go out.

Maybe some day I will get to be the Host home, I would love that, but that is not posssible at this point.

234 I did a brine of kosher salt, maple syrup, brown sugar, whole garlic cloves, fresh thyme, rosemary, and sage.

Tomorrow, when it's time to cook it, I'll paint it with maple syrup and rub on rotisserie chicken seasoning (got that at the bulk foods market. Unknown brand).

Smoke for a couple hours at 225 or so, then crank up to 350 until done.

Whole bird disappears with extended family wanting some to take home. I used to do 13 lb birds but upped it to 16 lbs after taking none home myself.

Carcass comes home and goes in the stock pot same night.

I like dark meat, so the thighs don't go on the serving platters. Everyone likes to parade by the cutting board, look and inhale, before I start carving.
